- If you haven't figured it out by now, we're big fans of Superformance and the cars they produce. This Shelby Cobra with a Roush built 427 is incredibly fast and the tone it produces it nothing short of perfection.
Sit back and enjoy this one...

Have over 100,000 miles on my Superformance Cobra with minimal issues.....and those were with an engine which was NOT supplied by Superformance. And with THAT many miles, what could you expect? Replaced the engine with a John Kasse 521ci 700+ HP engine and it is a beast. The body and frame are still as tight as new. I bought mine 20 years ago and can sell it for more than I have in it......based on that it is the least expensive car I have ever owned. Remarkable resale values on these cars. Great video. I can barely keep from just giggling with joy every time I drive mine. NEVER gets old.
GARY OSBORNE great comment! Thanks for giving your input here and glad to know they hold up so well
If I had the money this whould be the car i'd get not any new car comes to this thrill level in my opinion I got a '90 mustang foxbody 5.0 notch and I love my car like a kid but there's just something about a cobra

Very informative comment. Trying to get educated about what’s possible with Cobras. I didn’t know there was a non-kit / engineered option.

Check out Kirkham cobras...
Aluminum body!
Very$$$ though...
I bought a Superformance Cobra back in 2002 from the Olthoffs, chassis number 1358 with a ford crate 460 and dual quads....as the paint and craftsmanship is top notch, the most fun vehicle I ever owned.
LICobra you lucky bastard
I have 1715 also setup by Olthoff Racing, but I bought it through Superformance in Irvine CA. Titanium and black like the one in this video. Has a Roush 434 pushing 600hp. Very fun car!
I remember at some point years after I bought mine, Dennis Olthoff told me they could not sell and do the engine installs in house...to bad...they were great to deal with....mine was silver with black stripes.
I bought mine through Dennis Olthoff. It was used and he did the original install in 2012. Love the car.
You lucky Squeezer. I want one so bad i can taste it. zBut having being phucked over my Thachters Government in the 90s i never will ..
Most fun car I ever owned. Bought from friend dirt cheap. Factory Five with a big cam 429. Not a car alarm it couldn’t set off. You’ll never regret owning one. But you’ll always regret selling one.
The Cobra has been my dream car since it first came out. Before kit cars and any of that.
My second was the Daytona Coupe.
Both awesome vehicles, but I’ll never be able to afford an original.
Superformance has just the best that’s out there , to allow me to make the jump.
Performance and beautiful engineering, plus unlimited engine options takes it over the top for me.
And … there’s absolutely nothing else out there that sounds as good as a Cobra, at full bark. ❤️❤️❤️
As a kid I went and saw “The Gumball Rally” at the theater and fell in love with the Cobra. I will own one of these someday
Love that all Superformance cars are 100% licenced by the original manufacturers. Worth all the money. A new classic. Brilliant concept! Thanks South Africa.👍🏻💪🏻
One of the best car scenes, gumball rally, Ford cobra vs Ferrari, that made me fall in love with the cobra
These are just pure cool to me
Just imagine carving canyons with this Cobra, and hearing that exhaust sound echoing thru the mountains!
I’ve imagined believe me...and sooner or later I’ll own this and hit the canyons regularly
I don’t agree that Factory Five cars are junk cars as the OP put. However, if I were to build one myself I would definitely beef it up a lot more and add a different motor than a blueprint. Great video
I bought my Superformance 427 Cobra 10 years ago and have since racked up more than 30,000 smile-filled miles on it. It's so facking fantastic, I hardly know what more to say.
SundudeCAN thanks for the comment love hearing this as I’m considering one
How much was it?
I usually like Superformance's cars, but this one has a MAJOR FLAW:
I'm not sitting in it!!! What a beast!
J.F Cote 😂
AutotopiaLA I
That was an awesome statement!
J.F Cote Absolutely!
Priceless!! I get the same feeling from my ''67 Mustang fastback - up and down the gears just for the sheer SOUND of it!
bandagefreak awesome!!
I worked for many years for a great guy who owned an original ‘65 289 Cobra. I helped him on the restoration and he rewarded me many times over with opportunities to get behind the wheel. Each time I drove it, I’d get cramps in my cheeks from the silly grin I had pasted over my face. That said, this would take all that and magnify it many times over. Damn, what a fantastic car. Raw, mean, noisy, and demanding 100% of your attention. Exactly as it should be. Thanks for sharing this with us Shawn, and brother, color me green ‘cuz I envy the daylights out of you for what you do for a living!
My MKIII is the same color but has the Roush 427R. Great video.
OMG that 427 is beautiful! I want one!! Thank you Shelby for making this masterpiece!!
This is one of our Superformance replicas, however the only one licensed by Shelby. And yes, thank you Carroll and the rest of his SoCal hot rod team for coming up with the Cobra!
I'm so jealous of the Cobra owners here. It's an absolutely timeless classic, my favourite car of all time..
Would you be jealous even if it was a 289?
You could always build a FFR Cobra on the cheap, I've seen people do it for 20-25k. Still quite of cash but its doable for the majority of people.
@@nathanelliott6770 If I wanted one to use on a track, or road rallying etc. A Shelby 289 aluminium engine would be high on the list of engine options.
Roush is the true King of the Road! Sounds great!
Yeah, just an incredible thrill ride
I grew up with muscle cars in the 60’s, had a new ‘68 Roadrunner, but always loved the GT350 Mustangs and ‘65/66 Cobras. This car is awesome, and thanks to your video, I’m going to seriously look into buying one of these. Great job on the video, thanks.
That Cobra DOES sound just amazing!!! 🎶🎶🎶
Cheech1973 love it and the pull
Glad to see the old Hillbank name from South Africa Lance Stander . Your late Father Stan RIP was a great friend of mine . Still got the Merc i bought in 97 from Hillbank . Mooi loop .
They are doing it right with these cars. I love what Superformance does!
0:50 thats the most beautiful garage i've ever seen
Not bad at all!!
This is my dream car. One day!
You and me both!
I got my answer... pretty slick commercial...... it was for me.
Awesome! I spent the weekend in their new Cobra R which looks different that this car with front splitter and other visual elements but is the same mechanically and the more you drive it the better it gets. I need one of these in my life 😎
8:50... That down shift. Holy moly. 🇨🇦🇺🇸
That has to be the best sounding V8 I have heard! Rumbly but not over the top. Can only imagine what it would be like to drive it! Awesome job as always with the video!
I love the sound of these 427 cara with sidepipes. Like a Harley on 4 wheels and the drive is simply exceptional!
@@AutotopiaLA That is what I was thinking while hearing the car at a stop light as in sounds kinda like a Harley! 427's definitely have a distinctive sound!
I don't want a family. I want THIS CAR
Ill never have either but if I had to choose. Cobra it is
Family is BS
FORD RADIO…. 427 ALL DAY LONG…SWEET SOUND
When I grow up I wanna be like these two guys... Legends...
endorsed by the legend himself. well done.
What an Awesome soundtrack of that 427 Ford, the most famous Car in History. The Fiesta Flash
That sound is perfection to me too
what a car should be
For those of us who lovingly and thoroughly BUILT THEIR OWN Cobra, your intro made me wince.
“Just a kit car”
Sorry and didn’t mean to offend at all. Just my opinion
I love what the folks at Superformance do. Not only is the company licensed the Ford motor company and the late, great Carroll Shelby. But the company spares no expense on the quality and authenticity of their cars. And with their complete rollers, their customers are left with a vast variety of engine and transmission options. MY poison of choice,...Monza Red, White stripes, period correct 15'' knock-offs, Good Year 'bill board letter' tires, 427 FE 496 side-oiler with the Tremec TKO 600 HD 5 speed.
Sorry but I have to clear a few things up.. Backdraft is NOT a Kit car it is exactly like the Superformance. They are both made in South Africa. They both ship with out a motor and transmission. I have a Backdraft Cobra BD3 it is a box frame not a tube frame. Just because Superformance paid to be licensed by Shelby America does not make it any better than any other manufacturer. A kit car is the Factory Five Racing's version of the Cobra. With any of the Cobra replicas out there depending on suspension, brakes, motor, transmission and so on is the way the car is going to "feel". If you're getting paid to promote Superformance that's great! Just don't knock another companies quality and call it junk when it truly is not.
Cobra kit car manufacturer, Backdraft Racing is known for attention to detail that makes every custom roadster and authentic replica the very best. This is copy and paste from Backdraft website...
@@AutotopiaLA The only reason it is classified as a "kit" car is because it does not come with a motor and transmission. Just like guess who? Superformance. Do you consider a Superformance a "kit" car? Or a replica?
Yes let the butthurt flow through you young jeti
There are no manufacturing plants producing Cobra's. BD and SP are made in performance shops. Therefore, they're all kit cars. The only thing making them "smoother" than other kit cars and an original is their customized square frames... Definitely adds a ton of weight, definitely NOT original definitely takes a lot of the fun out of driving. Guess I'm agreeing with you.
Why did VW bother showing me an ad on this video?
I came here to watch this awesome Cobra. Yeah, I’m not gonna buy a Passat. 😂
We have no control over the ads that are run. I won’t be buying a Passat either lol!
I bet that box chassis is incredible! I struggle between wanting a Bondourant edition with air conditioning or the Mark III-R with the box chassis. Incredible cars! Only place I’ll buy new cars from! Love the video! Can’t wait until I can “stop looking and get cooking!”😂😂😂
That box chassis is incredible!
@@AutotopiaLA yeah, I bet it’s fantastic! However, the allure of the flex and old school feel from the Shelby chassis and n the Bondourant edition is also enticing, although both are incredibly different in feel!
Once I have enough funds equal to the price I would have no problem buying a blue superformance 427 Shelby cobra.
Wyatt Fortune I hear ya
Get a factory 5, closure to original, lighter, way more fun to drive.

Me too!! Doug is such a cool guy
Thanks Richard!
Through the gears that car sounds amaziiiing Ziiiiiin ziiiing....
b. suprem yes! Totally agree. The sounds of the decel are incredible
In my opinion, an authentic Cobra is the best Sporster or Supercar ever built in the entire world! Unfortunately in our streets in Switzerland full of speed limits, such a car makes no sense. However if I could live in Italy or California, this car is a must. Such a wonderful sound too!! Anyway my dream car, no doubt
92 G's is such an awesome price for this Cobra. 👍👍👍
The new C8 has completely changed peoples idea of performance car pricing but this still seems well priced never the less
Allen Saunders it really has and this is a lot of car for the price
Oh my god I gotta get me one of these
Love dogue’s daytona and 40
That was a cool one. Great for the canyon runs. Suits you brother get on it
Lsvip 1 working on it
That is and always has been my ultimate car want. That is the case of do you want it, do you need it or do you want to need it. 😅
Love the sound and the car is awesome!! Tremendous job👍👍
Daniel Ortiz they do incredible work from all that I’ve heard and seen
I love my superformance cobra!
And it shows Matt!!!
TheMjackson1977 I’m sure you do. Looking foreword to owning one of these
Mybe I'll have a dream tonight about me and my puppers (German Shephard/Husky mix) cruising around town in a Shelby Cobra. I have my Wiley X sunglasses on with a turtleneck sweater, she has on a pair of bomber style goggles, wearing her safety harness.
We would definitely get waved at with laughter and smiles, and probably pictures taken.
Amazing classic car, nice color and the stripes! and sound is awesome!👏👍💪
Adrian Stanciu yeah, everything about this one is on for me
Awesome.....
I found a finished kit Cobra and it was going for $37k, so it's not that bad on price. But I have taken a ride in a real Cobra and a kit Cobra and you absolutely can tell the difference between them and the chassis used for the kit has a lot to do with it... The original is a really beautiful piece of automotive history
For 60k less I'll take the kit car. Lol
If it feels good when you drive it that should answer most questions. And a real one beyond being absurd money is irreplaceable. I’ll take the kit/replica/recreation if it’s a good driver like this one is
The brand and frame design makes a huge difference. ERA for example took the original frame and improved those areas of weakness. Some replicas are just a junk slap together of various parts without a lot of thought.
Incredible-
Finn Green truly is
I test drove one at Superperformance in Redwood City. One I learned not all Cobras are created equal. Don't think you're just going to be able to get in this car and drive it. Well you can drive it. But I kind of think it's going to take a couple of months to get used to. I drove one for 45 minutes and my body was sore.
I felt a little beat up. It was a 427 with a Tremec in it. You have to stay on task the entire time you were in the vehicle. Your orientation to the vehicle should include how to get in and out of the car. When you downshift you get a little muzzle blast from that exhaust pipe the exits right at the door. What I realized was I'd probably be okay with the smaller setup. The slabside 289 and a 4-speed. I'm 60 years old.
I'm in observational driver, I like to ride around and look at stuff and listen to the radio. I don't drive in the 90th percentile. Superperformance builds a nice car. A beautiful body already stuffed for $90,000.
That's pretty cool.
I hear ya. That’s why I took it easy on this one. I think any car you drive needs to be gradually increased as you learn the tendencies of what it does under braking, acceleration and turning. But sooner or later I really want one of these
Dayuum that beast has such an iconic throaty roar.
My dad recently got a 65 with a 427 making 520 horse, 550 ft lbs of torque. I absolutely love my dad, but if the car is in his will... cant wait lol
😂😂
My Dad, God rest his soul, wanted one of these so bad. He went to Louisiana to test drive one, he said it was the bomb. My mom vetoed the purchase of one.
Sorry to hear that. These are so much fun to drive!
Yea man... I don't know how you could drive that and comfortably walk away not having a craving a deep desire to own it. The Cobra is more than an icon. Its the icon of all automobile icons. And from what I've read and seen about what superformance does it takes the Cobra to the next level. Now.... $92k? Is that just for the rolling chassis or is that with the 427 in it? If someone has already asked that I apologize. I ha went read the other comments yet. But I gotta say that my heart rate increased breathing escalated etc while u watched the driving portion of this video. Damn! What a car!!! I want one. Or like you said..."I need it...".
Story Teller Doug said this car which has about 1400 miles is $92K. Really fair price for what you get and the value they hold over time. I know what you mean saying you need it. I really know!
@@AutotopiaLA no doubt that you do. I saw the look on your face. I can only imagine what it must have been like to drive it. The Cobra and the Corvette Gran Sport are my favorite Superformance cars.
Great vid !
Thank you 👊
Ah, the perfect car for a new driver in the winter.. 😏😏😏😏
Beautiful car ! My favourite car for 50 years :o)
If you're looking forth 2nd 427 ever built I know a guy who has it still in the box. It was the back up engine for the 1st GT 40.
The guy lives in Puyallup WA and is interested in selling it. He bought it from Carrell Shelby.
You can build a SuperPerformance Cobra with the Coyote motor and supercharger, the purists want that rumble of a 427 in it. My goal is to someday get an Indigo Blue one made with the 427 engine and Borla intake, and black racing stripes. Looks like you really enjoyed test driving that car
What beautyful car....! I Love it....! ❤️💞💓🤤🤤🤤🤤

Oh, oh, Shawn! Was your 2020 C8 Corvette just put on hold? I can picture you driving your Cobra with a big block Boss 429 Jon Kaase 700HP monster.
Right now, it looks like many dealers are starting to really jack up the prices on the 2020 Vettes too. Go for it, man!
tmr626 would love to have both. Totally different uses and both would be filled with fun
Why in the name of all things CAR would anyone want a corvette when they could have a COBRA?🤣

The “junk “ “kit car “ is also built in South Africa, delivered as a rolling chassis just like the SPF Cobra. These SPF Cobras are beautiful cars but they are replica Cobras, anything built after 1967 is a replica. Correct me if I’m wrong but the current CSX fiberglass bodies come from South Africa, and the aluminum CSX bodies are sourced from Kirkham via Poland ( another “kit car”) it’s all very muddled and confusing.
The truth is that the Kirkham, Superformance & Backdraft cobras, except for the collectibility value, are head over heels better cars than the originals. They are faster, better handling and quicker stopping. Paint, fit and finish are beautiful. My Backdraft has a Roush 427 with 550HP, BMW suspension & power Wilwood brakes. It is a very impressive and intimidating vehicle.
My opinion after driving both cars. Didn’t mean to offend anyone, I was just that much more impressed with the Superformance car
Love your videos, just be more accurate next time. It’s all good.
Well said..
I love this thing
What a noise !!!!
Possibly the best sounding car ever!
Love the sound and bobble head torque🤪
Christopher Marechal so fun
Hold on a sec - Backdraft is not a kit car, Factory Five is. The Backdrafts also use a modern (well a late 90's) BMW M3 suspension, so I would expect it to be quite gooda s compared to anything that has an original 1965 design. And Superformances are also 2-3X what a Backdraft sells for. Don't get me wrong I'd love to have one of these. Looking forward to replies to see if I have my info straight.
Technically they’re all kits. Having driven the Backdraft and Superformance cars my preference is Superformance especially the Mk3 like in this video
really amazing...
I love their replicas
I love the roush engine, so sweet sounding 😍
Awesome car!
Elsey6 yeah, really is
That is actually you dude! You need that car for real
MAGNETIC RESONANCE I know believe me. Working on it
A Kaase Boss9 Boss 429 would look so badass in that.
Man, 500 horses in a car that weighs about as much as a cigarette butt.....I'll take one. I thought looking over the nose of my old RoadRunner with the Air Grabber open was a thrill.....I LOVE looking down the nose of this baby!
