20 year ago, I used to work right next door to Factory Five in Wareham, MA. Every time I see a FF Cobra, the engine sounds like thunder with those side pipes, especially with the 427.
Well kinda has lol, you're just used to seeing it the design is over 60 years old like the Morgan. An MG Cyberster for example is how an contemporary roadster looks like.
Growing up my dad always had V8’s, I loved riding with him. there isn’t a better sounding engine to me. (many would argue that) I watched this video with heavy base EarPods. Wow man! Truly wonderful. Video getting saved for replay:). Another great review! Nice one Rory.
I love these. Where I live, there’s a bunch of Cobras, genuine and replicas all over the place. I didn’t know this backstory. Thanks for doing this one. I love what you’re doing.
Do you mean how Clarkson bends the truth to make things “British”? Then yes, he’s carrying that mantle. The 427 cobra is so thoroughly reengineered that there is hardly anything the same to the ACE frame is different, suspension is different… it’s like the gt40. Yes both started as British cars but after their chassis and aerodynamics were found to be inadequate they were reengineered in the U.S. and only after that did they become the legendary cars they are now. If they had kept the British chassis as it was for both cars, they would have never won much anything and ended up a footnote in history and nothing more.
I met Carroll Shelby at Lime Rock Park in the 90s and told him that the Cobra was my 2nd favorite car in the world, and that hasn't changed in over 25 years. desperately hope to get a replica at some point.
I used to autocross a lot back in the 1970's in the San Diego area. One day a guy showed up with a real 427 Cobra. I got a ride in it around the course. WOW !!!!!!!!! That's a car I really loved, but only for about 1 hour at a time. 😅
The 427 and I believe the 289 also were still marketed in the UK (and probably overseas) under the AC badge. Probably just as rare if not rarer than the Shelby-badged cars. AC also put out various homages over the years.
@@eagle_rb_mmoomin_418 AC have made a new one, the AC Cobra GT Roadster/Coupe. Autocar made a video about it a couple of months ago. Would love to see the two in a comparison test 🙂
It’s a B road blaster for pure fun and not apologetic for it on a blue sky day. It’s the dream Fort William to Applecross for lunch and back machine on a day of cloudless sunshine.
May I suggest that you guys do a Rory Dream Cars series? There's something special about the episodes where you can clearly see that Rory is inside one of his dream cars; the joy and excitement are infectious.
I purchased my 1966 427 Cobra in 1968 for $4,995. I used it as my everyday car for the first 4 years I owned it. In those 4 years I added around 48,000 miles. Since then, as suggested, I have used it more like a toy and have only added around 25,000 miles.
I'm fine with having a performance EV as a daily and gas as my hobby pride car. Let this thing blow my ear drums out on the pretty days and then daily a fast electric sleeper the rest of the time. Best of both worlds
Do I get brownie points for identifying the filming location as being in and around Polebrook, near Oundle in Northamptonshire? There are some amazing driving roads around there 😉 The pub in the village, The Kings Arms, is worthy of a visit too
The AC Ace from which the AC Cobra was later built was only 100 HP and had a 0 - 60 time of slightly over 11 seconds. This vehicle would have faded into history if not for Carrol Shelby fitting it with powerful V8 engines, drivetrains and suspension upgrades. Shelby's versions were racetrack terrors that established the Cobra as the legend it is today.
Great backstory, and so reminiscent of how the American P-51 Mustang wasn’t a real winner until it was built using a British Rolls Royce Merlin engine. 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼
I've never lusted after any exotic car, but the Shelby Cobra is pure automotive prawn too me. No1 on my bucket list is to build a Dax Rush replica of the cobra.
AC Ace, Ford 260c.i. slab side. Most of what you see are the 427 style, and to a lesser extent the 289 FIA. I would like to see a kit that was closer to the slab side.
The original is one of my dream cars, and the example used in this upload is very nice, only issue I see with it is the steering wheel is on the wrong side of the car...🤘🏻🇺🇸
Maybe I’m wrong but the AC cobra has always been described as a British body with an American powertrain. It’s very iconic as an American classic but we’ve always loved that it was an American taking a British chassis and like Americans did, we shoved a massive V8 in it

@@Tefloncoated if you knew something about manufacturing costs you‘d realise that 60k is nonsense. I‘d say 100-120k would be a realistic price. 200k is too much I agree
When I removed DB kilers from my bike, I was activating 3 car alarms in my street every morning when I was going to work. With this car I would blowup some windows 😂 But I probably wouldn't have to go to work 🤔
I had a Backdraft w a Roush 427 with 570hp. I sold it because it was so scary and the lack of ABS is unsettling. Wasn't good on the highway. Shook over ever pebble in the road.
I thought Superformance was South African. I love the cobra, would choose a Kirkham over this, and from Superformance, it has to be the GT40 II for me.
