- After experiencing a turbulent few years in the spotlight, 1995 was set to become Michael Jackson's ultimate test, could the King of Pop do it once again and reign supreme with the release of 'HIStory, Past, Present and Future Book One'?
The much anticipated album release ignited a media and publicity rampage that included multi-million dollar music videos, high profile interviews, award show performances and a one-night-only cable television special, which during its rehearsal, Michael Jackson was hospitalised after collapsing on stage.
In intensive care after suffering from a life threatening bout of illness, it was unclear whether Jackson had been successful in his pursuit for prestige, and whether his life and career will ever be quite the same again.

HIStory is so underrated. They Don’t Care About Us and Earth Song are among the most well known songs…
@@Milkers777 History is a weak album and was torn apart by critics. You dislike anything that doesnt paint jacko in a perfect light. You may be jackos undercover boyfriend.
@𝖒𝖋𝖔𝖚𝖗 ignore jaytoosavy. He patrols every Jackson video shouting down anyone who dares to oppose jackson. Hes encapsulates what a biased deranged fan truely is. If you read general unbiased reviews, history fairs poorly.
@@Milkers777 you have 0 self awareness. Thanks for the small dose of amusement🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@mrpussinboots4252 are you sure that you aren't a lowkey fan ???
@@amirahthomas4950 define fan? I follow music. You'll receive no bias from me.
Ah yes the History era. This is probably the most gritty and aggressive MJ album. He seemingly got more aggressive with each album from Off the Wall to Thriller to Bad to Dangerous. But this peaked with History, never have we seen MJ so pissed off.
exactly
Yep, he did adopt a more aggressive/grittier singing style the older he got, and especially on the HIStory album.
I can just imagine him in the studio during songs like “Scream,” “They Don’t Care About Us,” “Earth Song,” or “Tabloid Junkie” stomping, punching the air, throwing stuff, etc. while he’s singing.😂😅
Yeah I noticed that Invincible seemed like a much happier record in comparison to some of his work and I thought it was odd
@NedlsWierd You’re right. But I think Invincible is definitely a breath of fresh air in that regard. It felt more soulful and tranquil compared to History.
Can you blame him?
The ENTIRE History Era is underrated! They Don’t Care About Us and Stranger In Moscow deserved better!
History should have had a 25th anniversary release in May-June 2020 considering the events that took place. (BLM)
i hate how america treated this album. he promoted it mostly in Europe where i was in i 95-98. nobody talked bout his personal life in germany. everyone just loved the music & performances. that's why HIStory was way bigger outside of u.s.
@@reesendamusix the U.S. never appreciated his music, and turned their back on him after he's done so much for the industry.
Yesssss
@@reesendamusix Facts.
The amount of hysteria around each MJ album is a level of hysteria that will probably never be reached again! This goes to show how much of a phenomenon he truly was!
I second that
It was like an international holiday event! Insane!
@@counterstriker3971 Correct! In this age of digital media, people aren't really lining up to buy albums in the cold rain. That's a BIG part of why something like a MJ album release will never happen again...but the fact that it DID happen with MJ WITHOUT the need for digital or social media is a true testament to him. The greatest of ALL TIME.
"You had to be there" kinda moments. HIStorical events 🤣
So true
Man lisa looked amazing when she was with him, she looked stunning in that photoshoot and interview and she never looked the same after their breakup 😭
the best she ever looked
I remember the day I went to a record shop to buy the album “HIStory” after school in the summer of 1995. I was so excited. I had played the CDs in my room over and over again. Good old days! 👑
:-)
I remember listing to that album in my moms house when I was a kid. “Will you be there” gave me chills. The lyric …and fight till the end but I’m only human is haunting when I think about his death.
@@Berkmugga Michael wrote the song. I think he wrote to God & all the people who care about him. I wish him to know that we will always be there for him. 😭💔
By the way, "Will you be there" is not from HIStory. It's from Dangerous~ my favorite MJ album! 👑😉
@@trothyding8325 you’re right. I must have gotten confused at some point because the lyric just speaks to the later part of his life so powerfully, particularly to the period after the first accusations.
I do remember buying and listening to history in my moms living room and reading through the Album.
@@Berkmugga Yes, the lyric is an unfortunate coincidence.
So glad to talk to someone with the same experience. 🤗
HIStory was the most impressive comeback in music history. The Album itself is a masterpiece and is not afraid to address controversial issues while allowing an intimate look into the soul of Michael Jackson.
he basically shut down all the haters with his 1995 vma performance
FAAAAAACTS!!!! My favorite performance of all of his awards performances. Staggeringly iconic.
something ive notced from these year in review videos is that the media seems to become more and more annoying and negative.
Yep its actually mad
Yeah especially in the 1994 video
It’s really sad Michael is really strong because if I was him let’s just say 😴😴😴😴 forever
The media didn't appreciate true talent and they really were heartless.
The press became out of hand! It’s like they purposely wanted to destroy him.
I can't get over how many times in this video they called Michael the "self-proclaimed" King of Pop. Did anyone count? Lol. He never proclaimed himself the King. He didn't have to.
It sounded like they were jealous
He wouldn’t appear at award shows unless they called him King of pop
@@bluterror8794 true
HIStory was the BEST album Michael ever made! I loved it! His answer to the tabloids!
“To give someone a piece of your heart, is worth more than all the wealth in the world.” ― Michael Jackson
HIStory is my favorite album of all time... I love everything about Mike speaking up and letting his music do the talking for him. Been listening to it daily since I was 8 years old in 1995...
Also a little unknown Michael Jackson fact about this year. Michael was set to perform Man in the Mirror at the Million Man March that October but pulled out of doing it (his handlers probably told him not to do it) . He did donate to the million man March tho.
He did donate the song " on the line" for Spike Lee film about the million man march
@@mrmaxxx94 and I believe he paid for the Jumbotrons at the March also
Nice to know. Damn, that would’ve been awesome to see at the time
@@ericmorris5912 it definitely would’ve. I wish Michael would’ve did it.
1:13-1:18, best part of this video. MICHAEL WAS ALWAYS INNOCENT
I remember being super anxious about that HBO concert in 1995, so much that I kept staring at the slot in the TV guide (was 7pm Central Time on HBO Saturday night). Then it got cancelled due to Michael's hospitalization. I was bummed about the concert being cancelled but was relieved when he got out the hospital. I remember the news saying that the concert was delayed, but they cancelled it all together.
10:40 I remember when he sang that with Boyz II Men it was ... last time he sang it live was at the 1986 Grammy awards at the end with the same artists he sang it with a year earlier
Ironically he sang that on the same day "We are the world" premiered ten years prior
me too i was 15 at the time
@@telikaandfam Michael would sleep with Shana Mangatal in 1996..she claims in her book Michael and Me🤔👦😏
I think they rehearsed all the songs going to be performed on there Childhood, Dangerous, those two songs are the only ones I know that was going to be performed
@@thepubknight6144he sang we are the world live in 1993 and 2006
HIStory is the 1st Michael Jackson album I was able to buy with my own money. Finally a legal adult with my first job.
Got my job only a little over a week before HIStory came out. And the VERY first thing I thought to do with my first paycheck is go down to the record store & get my hands on that HIStory. MAN I was HYPED!! All other albums were gifts but this was MINE.
It quickly became my FAVORITE Michael album of all time & still is. It's hard to pick favorites with Michael albums.
But the tiebreaker for me was the Greatest Hits portion covered all of his previous adult albums & that allowed the new material to be on top of all that. So I had the best of both worlds. The new stuff of HIStory & the history of Off The Wall, Thriller, Bad, & Dangerous.
Liked Scream when I heard it but LOVED They Don't Care About Us, the 2nd song, the moment I heard it.
I learned so many lessons from that album such as the realness of Tabloid Junkie with the mainstream media.
And it was prophetic too because every one of those songs applied to the 2nd witchhunt in 2003 through 2005.
That BSTA Tom Sneddon, the cold man. BSTA = Busta? BSDA = Bull Shit District Attorney? SBDA = Santa Barbara District Attorney.
An emotional roller coaster ride of RAGE, ANGER, SADNESS, BITTERNESS, PLEADING, RESOLUTION, & RELIEF.
Mike went through the Kübler-Ross model of the Stages of Grief pouring it ALL on the wax. Mike CUSSED!! Hahahaha!
It started with a SCREAM & ended with a SMILE. THAT'S how you make a comeback & shut down all the haters. HIStory.
That was beautiful! Thanks for sharing your story.
@@jalonjones8567 You're welcome!
Invincible was my 1st album I bought with my own money. HIStory received from family
HIStory and Thriller were the first two albums bought with my own money. I miss the 80s and 90s
@@jalonjones8567so true I love seeing well said comments like that ✌️
The jealous outraged media. Calling him the self proclaimed King Of Pop. Really?? American and the British Media at times were really Garbage. He gave America so much with his work as a recording artist and entertainer. They tried to trash him when he had a dilemma. Disgraceful how they treated him.
I still hate it, to this day, that the only publicity MJ received in the 90s was bad publicity, just because of the change in his image. As a true moonwalker since the beginning of the 90s, MJ could do no wrong. I sometimes cried in my room for all the bad things he was labelled as by the media. Although he created some controversy himself, I still blame the media for his downfall.
I still grieve over that One Night Only special. I always wanted to see him in that kind of setting. 95 started off so good. And of course it ended no so good. But who else could get that much love and attention outside a hospital? Hundreds of people camped out the entire time he was in there. That's amazing.
+Nathan Fuller Such a missed opportunity. I was prepared to take that day off work just to watch it.
I didn't wanna miss a thing! Why couldn't they reschedule?! What could have been...
@@johnlucas1543 I remember hearing that Michael was not happy with the show. I don't know if that's true or not but it probably is since they didn't reschedule.
@@nathanbradleyf777 That & probably the financial fallout of Michael's collapse forced him to go on tour for HIStory. I forgot that One Night Only was supposed to be in place of him touring. And also don't you find it strange that you hear talk of heart problems after the One Night Only fiasco? Foreshadowing maybe? And is this really a coincidence? This Is It was a similar in-place set of concerts even though it was more than one night only. Watching these years in review shed more light on how Michael's life ended up & I see too many "coincidences" in this timeline. Mike was right about that Conspiracy.
Beautiful Michael always and forever ! He was the most sweetest and innocent person.
DAMN, Mike does it again! Doing an AMA in 1995, must have been one of the first to do so! What a visionary.
Even with the short hair, he face still looked like in the Dangerous Era, in the 1993 concerts, and started slowly turning into the HIStory Era in 1996
Every single moment is the best gift of Michael Jackson 🌟🙏👑
HIStory is a very special album to me!
In 2011 when I was 9 years old my dad bought it (on CD) because we didn't have any Michael Jackson albums. I still remember when I asked him is this artist still alive and he answered that he died about 2 years ago. When I started lisseng to the album the very first song I heard was Billie Jean.
I had never heard something so catchy and magical!
That same day I started to lisseng to his other songs and became a fan.
Now over a decade later Michael Jackson is still my favorite artist! :)
HIStory and Thriller, And Rhythm Nation Janet Jackson CD were my first favorite CDS ever
The Micheal review videos have become a must watch before bed.
Me too😄
Shame the album never had a standalone release for Disc 2 with its own conceptual artwork, it really is like Jimmy Jam said his best work to date. I guess they were afraid the album wasn't going to stand on its own sales-wise without the hits to back it up.
HIStory is my all-time fav album.
I agree. Disc 1 was security for sales after all things MJ went through.
Michael Jackson should have called this is it History 2
oh so thankful for this channel. HIStory is a significant piece of art. the older it gets the better. it gets .
His HBO collapse was the beginning of the end. His body was breaking down at an exponential rate since Dangerous. His health only got worse and he knew performing would literally kill him and tried to avoid it as long as possible.
History tour MJ was in great shape
@@lamaudelewis9866 in great shape? Seriously? In this tour he performed under painkillers, he practically stopped singing live. Michael's health was undermined.

I remember vividly waiting to be one the first to go out and purchase my copy of the HIStory album, when it finally hit store shelves. There were two different versions of this iconic album released. The original release of the HIStory album, which is the one that I still own to this day, is from the original release date, that has the controversial lyrics on the track, They Don't Care About Us. Due to all the controversy behind the lyrics, Michael ended up having to release a second edited version of The HIStory album that did not contain the controversial lyrics of the song, They Don't Care About Us. The original HIStory album release had a red color outline around the hype sticker and the second release of the History album, that included the edited version of the song, They Don't Care About Us, had a tan color outline around the hype sticker. Anyone out there that might be looking for a physical copy of the HIStory album. This is how you can tell the difference between which version that you are getting. Great job on the MJ 1995 year in review video, The Detail. 👌🏾 I really enjoyed it! 😊 I'm looking forward to watching the 1996 MJ year in review video! Keep up the good work! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
This is my favorite series on this channel. The amount of research and attention to detail you put into these videos is unmatched. Thank you so much for what you do. History is probably one of my least fav eras mostly due to the turmoil Michael was dealing with, and it really impacted his sound and content musically. He lost a lot of joy we all knew to love him for, but I completely understand why that was. With that said, his VMA performance is one of his best live performances ever.
+Beza F I sympathize with you on your feelings of the HIStory era. Mike was MAD. Pure MAD. ANGRY. ENRAGED.
A looooong way from happy Blame It On The Boogie Mike & the joyous yelp that starts Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough.
But I love HIStory. I loved him getting pissed off & just letting all that rage come out in his music.
The haters & conspirators deserved it. Mike let his art do the talking. Said everything that needed to be said.
I love how the entire tracklist is a progression of his emotional turmoil & him going through the stages of grief.
It starts with a SCREAM yet ends with a SMILE. After he gets all of that crap off his chest, he returns to form in relief.
That's the beautiful thing about Michael music though. There's always so many eras to pick from. Something for everybody.
We were robbed in the 2000s. Imagine what he would have put out in that time period if not for all the witchhunting going on. I STILL hate those Sony execs for their bullshit on Invincible & beyond. All for a doggone catalog. Man...
@@johnlucas1543 I agree with everything you said here. It was awesome to see him defend himself and let out his frustrations. I guess for me, it just pained me to see him in such distress. This time period just reminds me of all that he endured, and it leaves feelings of bittersweetness knowing that this level of pain and stress would ultimately lead to his death.
I love Michael Jackson so much 💜
Ok...can they STOP calling him the "self-proclaimed" King of Pop? Judas Priest, man...he said HIMSELF it was started by his friends like Princess Diana and Elizabeth Taylor in the 80s. He only started to use that name in the late 80s and early 90s onward after the name STUCK. Why it stuck? HE'S FUCKING MICHAEL JACKSON....anyway, HIStory is amazing and timeless. "Money" is my favorite on that CD.
I think it was started by the press. It was clearly true.
@@brittaolson6550 if you think anything the press says about him is true then...

Je mi smutno Michael byl jak štvané zvíře od bulváru a novinářů to si vůbec nezasloužil, byl to laskavý a citlivý člověk jaký tu kdy byl. Miluji Michaela je to pro mě lidská bytost a čistá duše. Mám k němu velkou úctu a respekt.

I wish Michael could have held on to that 1995 VMAs aesthetic for awhile. He was SO attractive with the short hair. He had a certain swagger during this time, mixed with a bit of a playful Charlie Chaplin vibe. And his smile was off the charts!!!!
My birth year lets go. Whats crazy is some of these clips feel familiar but as a infant you don’t realize you are watching a super star.

HIStory was amazing. It has its weak points (little Susie, smile), however Stranger in Moscow, They Don’t Care About Us, Earth Song, and History (title track) are all arguably his best work. I wouldn’t say the album is as good as dangerous, but I personally like it better than thriller, off the wall, and invincible. Bad I think it’s tied with. Overall I think HIStory is the best demonstration he still had this unmatchable musical talent, despite the trials and tribulations he had to suffer from at that point.
Weakpoints please go listen to those two songs again please🤣🤣

MJ is so loved and will always be loved and be in our heart! Am a big time fan of his, I so love him and love his music. MJ has tried fighting all forms of illness all his life and yet he was strong to keep on through all the allegations against him by the ungrateful people he loved and cared for. God knows why he took Michael early in life at the age of 50, MJ has really suffered and need rest! I really didn’t pay attention to the 2nd disc of HIStory until like 2001. I was always into the first disc because I didn’t hear most of his old stuff that much until they played it on radio or waiting to see his music videos of MTV or VH1. I’m glad I caught on to a lot of it way before he died because I was a true fan. I remember them showing Scream after his interview with Barbara or whoever it was and he was with Lisa Marie. We all sat in the living room watching. Good days! And I so remember that commercial for the One Night Only concert.
