Duuude...your video is so totally aligned with what Prince was about that we got more outta these 10 minutes than we have outta 2-hour long documentaries about The Man! We've been lookin' for an edge to JUMPSTART our own creativity ~ we're sump'n of a Poet ourselves, sump'n to get us back in our own writin' game...and THIS was It. You EARNED a lifelong sub for this shit...cuz we'll be checkin' out your other work, as well...BUT...we'll be returnin' to THIS One...OFTEN. #SoExcellent
@makeartnotcontent NO DONT FUCKONG SAY I CANT REACJ HIS OUTPUTMFUCL.WHY WOULD.TPU EVEN THINK I'm not a genius at his level..its.me.dammot..How.can I be as creative and talented as he? And why was Prince so demanding and impatient?
Yeh that's true if you have an outlet, but if the world ignores you, and you get too frustrated then it's fine to stop. Your responsibility is to your mental health not anything else.
1.- WORK FAST 2 - BECOME A FINISHER 3- ABANDON PERFECTIONISM 4- MAKE ART EVERY DAY 5- SLEEP 6- VAULT MENTALITY Thank you for this super cool video which is great inspiration for any artist who's lost momentum or drive or is weak in any of these rules. What a gift he had, and what a gift he gave us! It's sad that his over-exertion (stage antics) caused the physical pain which took him down way too young.
He was never off tour either. He was constantly throwing concerts year around. Especially after he turned himself into a symbol. he sony would not pay for his tours cause he refused to work for him so he threw his own tours. he was pretty much a james brown. He never stopped. james brown was the hardest working man in entertainment and he was up there with him
I’ve been planning on producing my own album since I was 20. I have 15 full songs in my head: guitar parts, bass lines, drum fills, synths, percussions, strings, cello, oboe, clarinets, high distortion, fuzz, metal, funk, acoustic, sax, tubular bells. Everything has been in my head for years. Different situations have pushed me away from getting my own band and recording. A few weeks ago I said “f*ck it” andd decided to do it myself, completely, using DAWs, and playing all instruments I can myself. I know I’m not Prince but I won’t wait to be 80 to start complaining about not accomplishing my dreams.
That's the way. While you work, remember to get feedback from your audience often. Get people invested in you early. Dig your well before you're thirsty.
That’s awesome! It’s really hard to find the right musicians for the music most of the time and it shows true musicianship to be able to do everything yourself so top stuff, I respect you 👏
I’ve my fair share of full songs in my head that I’ve been sitting on for years. With the way the internet has given us small timers a shot at putting out our own music without having to deal with record labels, I’ve been considering doing the same thing you’re doing. I have an MPC Live 2 with a number of the plugins and expansions, I have Logic Pro X and a considerable amount of VSTs, and I have Ableton (though I don’t really use it), as well as Pro Tools and Melodyne. I might as well make something to put on Bandcamp and streaming even if it’s just to say I put some music out. I wish you success with your endeavors and I hope to get my stuff out as well. Not only do we share the same mission but we also share the same last name, lol.
It was rumoured when Prince died, he had left behind enough music to put out an album a year for 100 years ! He made other musicians look like slackers. He lived and breathed productivity.😊
Prince is something else man. The fact that he could play like 8 instruments successfully and make it sound good too, and sing on top of it all and do it in style !
This was Wolfgang Mozart's creative process also... quick, precise, finished. Prince is literally our time's Mozart... in physical stature and musical output. Prince will be revered in perpetuity just as Mozart is today, never to be forgotten.
Yeah...but don't you think not being a perfectionist is easier if you are considered to be one of the best guitar players of all time? lol...how bad those first takes could be?
I like this because - well one: it's accurate and two: they're not talking about Prince as "a genius". They're talking about his work ethic, which was basically second to none. It's true that he would work non-stop for 3 or 4 days with no sleep, crash out then wake up and do it again. You'd have to learn every song he regularly played, rehearse for a show, do the show, then do an aftershow. And he'd do things like wait until you'd memorised everything, and change it at the last minute. He was basically horrible to work for :D and he could be quite a nasty, manipulative shit until later in his life when he became more religious. The music is only one side of Prince as well, you had the choreography, the media releases, the fashion, the implementation of new technology (the first video I watched on my PC was a Prince video, "Interactive" I think - from a CD on a magazine cover. And he was the first major artist to sell his own music on the internet - but distribution was a problem (Crystal Ball CD). Then there was the legal and business side of things, he got out of his atrocious recording contract with Warner Brothers, and still managed to survive whilst running a multi-million dollar recording complex: Paisley Park. The man was a fucking beast. I mean...................... came from nothing, worked harder than everybody, was better than everybody, never let anybody put him down, didn't crumble under mockery or critisism..... was altruistic (donated money to charities under the condition they didn't tell anybody). Then he had a quite tragic personal life - with all of the normal things that will happen to people, and that are traumatic. I really don't think there are many people in the history of the world, that compare to him. James Brown did............. he had recording companies and all that, he worked hard. I like the comparison to Mozart, I think that's fair and accurate - a person of extraordinary ability, output and clearly outstanding, in their chosen field. Maybe somebody in the Roman Empire, would out do his work rate............. maybe..... Michalangelo in the art world.......... Tesla in science......... But Prince, in music. And he was funny, too. Man, I loved him.
If you read or hear what past members of his band say about him, James Brown was nothing like this. He was no composer, he basically put everybody else at hard work and then claimed credit for their ideas. Great performer and dancer, really passionate and hard working, with an ego the size of the northern hemisphere, but nowhere near as creative as Prince.
It’s stunning how similar lots of this sounds to how Frank Zappa was. No point comparing the music, as they had different styles, but Zappa was exactly like this - fiercely independent, incredibly prolific, and a workaholic. He even had a vault they’re now slowly releasing.
that's exactly what I was thinking! I've been a major Zappa fan for over 35 years and there are quite a few things they have in common. I'd love to see a longer interview with their "Vaultmeisters" (Joe Travers is the one in Zappa's case)
Prince is my favorite musical artist. This video is inspiring in many ways but I can't help but point out that Prince died at the young age of 57 from an overdose, addicted to opiates to address pain related to work-related injuries (and other deeper wounds). He left no will, with no spouse or children, and his estate was left in disarray and went to his sister and 5 half-siblings. Perhaps we could point out the perils of workaholism at the same time we cherish his productivity and artistry.
Artists who are creative often have unconventional lives. They aren’t clean and perfect and well ordered. They are often chaotic and messy and filled with pain. If you want calm centered and serene don’t look to an artist like Prince.
I'm 52 and a huge prince fan but I write music. I've never lived up to my expectations musically but I have in how I've lived my life off-grid with a wife and kids in the wilderness. It takes work every day and constant commitment. I just copied and pasted this video into ten new tabs - the first time I've ever done that with UA-cam. This is all I will think about for a while now. Thank you.
@@tamukart3359 Work hard and know you can do what it takes. Strawbale is better than they say. Focus on infrastructure not vegies - they come quick - tanks, power, structures take longer.
I seen Prince 25-30 yrs ago at a small gig in a San Jose college gymnasium....AMAZING he played drums, bass, guitar and piano....I was left flabberghasted....how could all this creative genius come out of that diminutive man....I was blessed to see alot of my favorite musicians live ..Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Ramones, Black Flag, Germs George Clinton & Parliment Funkadelic, S Pumpkins.....etc....Prince still is the best.....R I P Prince.......
Prince knew so much that was overlooked in the business. Women are insanely overlooked even now in the music industry. We’ve made changes but we could do a lot better.
I will say, while the constant drive to produce (which is also work) is impressive, Prince died at a young age, and in a way that feels aligned to a state of overworking / constantly performing. Also, putting a bed in a studio doesn't mean you value sleep, it is an act of overworking. In Hong Kong, people bring sleeping bags to the office, and I wouldn't say that means they value sleep.
Nah, the whole "candle burns twice as bright burns half as long" thing doesn't apply to humans, we are organic beings with self regenerating capacity, all we need is energy to heal. I can list off tons of prolific artists who lived to their 80s and 90s. an artist cannot overwork, because he/she is working for themselves, that's very different from someone overworking for another person, this creates a different stress profile that will definitely slowly kill you. There's a huge difference between forcing yourself to work hard and hustle to meet the expectations of others, versus just flowing in perpetual creativity for no purpose other then to enjoy life. Some examples of long living artists: Alejandro Jodorowsky, David Lynch, Elton John...
yes, working for 8 hours a day, only put up work once every 6 month, Rehearse for only 5 minute a day, is how you become a Normie. yes you will have balance in life, but you'll also die in a markless grave as if you never exist in the first place. clearly people who criticize him was a nobody, while he is cemented in the History as a Legend, someone who will be remembered even 1000 years from now, he was immortal leave people with their way of life alone, it's not anyone place to judge, mind your own business.
@@jensenraylight8011You need to take your own advice. If no one should judge Prince’s lifestyle, you shouldn’t judge anyone else. Not everyone really gives a fuck if they become a “normie”, a lot of people are okay being themselves. If you want to strive for more, so be it. But don’t turn around and shit on somebody else because they don’t want to stay awake on a week long drug bender to make a good album. Some people are happy to just be of service to those they love, their community, and being happy. And you should respect that as well if you want it back. Idk how many people will remember or care about Jensen Raylight when you’re gone, but that doesn’t mean your life was any less meaningful or impactful than Prince’s.
Finding videos like this is always so refreshing. Lesson 3: "Abandon Perfectionism" ("stop trying to be a perfectionist!") resonates with me the most because I'm an artist who records all my records using an app (Bandlab) and there's always this pressure to overly produce my music and use autotune on my voice just because everyone else does it. I, since a kid, have always recorded using the old-school method "keep doing it til you get it right," rather than go the easy way and fix any mistakes using autotune (again, something everyone else does). I always loved this about Prince and even Micheal. 4:18 - 4:22 is beautifully said: "prince knew that leaving the mistakes in was also leaving the emotions in," and I love how they described his songs as "a sneeze," meaning it lands however it does and he keeps it. I personally overthink and work hard to correct my mistakes during sessions but I still find this inspirational cause, again, I've never been into using autotune or overly producing any of my songs. This also tells me I need to embrace and love ALL parts/textures/tones of my voice and not just one. Raw vocals and sparse production are what make songs classics🗣💯‼️😌

Thank you for putting this together, as someone who sang and cried to Purple Rain and When Doves Cry. This video makes me wanna create. "why wait any longer? Take a chance, it can only make you stronger! Its your time, its your time"
He was so fucking real. I struggle with perfectionism, but it is true that mistakes are part of the human experience, in all stages of life. He inspires me to embrace rawness, without compromising quality nor falling into laziness. He's the true definition of a genius.
Prince was a totally and completely mentally and creatively connected being that took the form of a male while embracing the female energy as well and was funneling music through his existence effortlessly without resistance. I believe he embodies what a true creative is and he is one of many. Long live the little guy, the purple conduit to the universe!
I've left my corporate job, and did a challenge to overcome my overthinking to finish an EP in 45 days and it went viral. I've finished the challenge, came up with 8 songs, filtered them down to 6 tracks, and the EP will be release next Friday on all streaming platforms. Now after watching this video, Prince motivated me to finish an album in 10 days. So on to the next challenge we go. This will be only 10 days from my life, but i'll remember them forever.
I think if you asked Prince how to be more creative, he'd say to listen to yourself and pray to God. And work hard. "I work really hard, and I hope that shows".
I’d say be inspired by this and work understanding your own abilities and limitations so you don’t get frustrated but steadily grow. Prince was prince, you be you.
Well said. I never try to compare any other artists to Prince. He was so much in his own lane and such a different animal, I honestly didn't think it fair to compare others to him. His output was extreme. It's definitely not a pace or lifestyle for everyone.
“Prince was an absolutely Phenomenal Musical Genius Spirit.”. Nothing (No One) Compares To Prince.! This Genius is a primary source of inspiration to millions, including me! Great video.
I have been a Prince fan since 1984 and through the years my mind is constantly being blown. The work ethic, the vision, the artistry. And oh yes, "Can't forget about the Funk"! He was and is Amazing. I thank God for sharing him with us, because his gift has been and is a blessing to us all. Once in a Lifetime!
The great thing about working so fast is that once it is in the public domain that pretty much mentally underlines the piece as finished, so there won't be like in my case, discovering a song I wrote on Christmas day 2021 that 'still needed better strings!'. Find your flow... keep moving forward and don't look back or down!! BOOM 🇬🇧💣🇺🇲
I like that! Sounds like Prince- as described by his Peggy, and Susan Rogers 2 of his former recording engineers,- was a hyper creative. His head was constantly flowing with ideas and concepts for his music. So to get them out of his head and put them in a recorded song format, he had no time to overthink amd rework stuff, he wasn't like a Steely Dan, who would spend all day retwerking over a minor detail, taking them an entire week to do half a song, (that was their approach which worked great for them) but for Prince, imperfection and minor mistakes that came out afforded him to see a new musical landscape that he would work with during the process and he would build around them and include them. A poet, he saw these mistakes as real human expressions. And real humans make mistakes all the time and so to him, it was an artform all unto itself. And so he kept them in there. A famous bass player once said that is what made him stand apart from the rest. It was so refreshing for her to work with him because he kept it moving. Play it, leave it in there and let's not waste too much time fussing with it because we will lose out on other opportunities coming our way. Thus it was typical of him to record several different versions of one hit song. Each one was just as fabulous, and unique within itself as the original. I know of no other recording artist who does that!! Not on his level anyway. Usually they may take the best version of that song and discard the others. But not Prince. He kept each one.
@@keithbell9348 Mate!!! No sarcasm here but I am taking one line in your reply as a sign!!! A poke from the sky!!! (Don’t waste too much time fussing or we will miss out on other opportunities!) That’s it…. Truly this year I am not going to get bogged down with that and ALSO, I am going to try and stay on a project until it is finished, because as we all know… the best song we ever wrote is the latest one!!! 🙈🤣 Only today I started recording the song I wrote yesterday (when you’re upside down) yet the two I SHOULD have been working on remain unfinished (need to replace guide-vocals with final vocal). My fear is… if I don’t get it down, if I don’t record this Marvellous gift from the universe… somehow the God/Goddess of music will be unhappy!!! That is my cycle… over 300 songs sketch recorded in last five years and NOT ONE finished!!!!! F##### hell!!!! Thank you… your comment was a lifesaver!! Best wishes from an Englishman making armour and music in a French forest! ⚒️🎶⚒️ Stay creative mate. 👍
In the 80's it was Prince, Prince owned the 80's. His compositions were infectious, his grooves were uncanny, his lyrics were like words plucked from a magical tome that could capture your mind and make your body move. The epitome of an artist and a musician. He was born for his art and there will never be another like him ever again. Rest in Purple Peace Prince and thank you for all the work, effort and music you shed blood sweat and tears to bring to the world, never forgotten.
@mikedavis8008 Prince did not rip off Journey. Neal and or Jonathan spoke on that, Prince actually called Neil, and Jonathan, and asked if they felt Purple Rain was too close to 'Faithfully'. That was professional and courtesy amongst great musicians. They, Journey, gave Prince their blessing of course. No problem. Purple Rain is Prince's crossover hit, he was going for that mainstream rock audience, and so it mimics the SPIRIT and power ballad rock of 'Faithfully'. I'm also a HUGE Journey fan, don't get me started!
@@ModernaireThank you very much for this👍. It appears the other person isn't well informed. I watched that video too on this question of Prince and Journey over that song... Must've been on @Professor of Rock........
@@lawrencenjawe9875 Yes it was! PoR did a whole episode on Prince and Journey, it's great! It's information that also on Ultimate Classic Rock music news, information that's only come out after Prince leaving us. Being a huge Prince fan AND Journey fan (first), both artists and their art have a few similarities and connections also, finding this out, verified what I had always felt a significant element of what PR was based on. As for this person, It's okay to be wrong, I am many times of get my facts all mumbled up, most of the time also. We learn and IN-joy! Anyway, thank you and Happy Thanksgiving!
Prince was a revelation in college and thereafter. Musicians I loved, loved him. It took me a few days but soon I got it, especially with Dirty Mind which was my gateway. Eventually you get to the side projects and bootlegs and soundboards and it’s all amazing. I love reading books about him and his process. Sign o The Times is probably my favorite concert film, Stop Making Sense be damned! He doesn’t get the mainstream respect he deserves. My problem with finishing and sharing things is I always think “This is not good enough to represent me. I can do better. If I share this, people will dismiss me. I need to debut with something better.” It’s been many years and I’ve basically given up on making something good enough to share, and making things period. It’s tough to get over my ego and self consciousness and put my name on something and release it to the world.
Naw, Prince wrote a song a day for the five years that his engineer Susan Rogers worked with him. He wrote songs prolifically for essentially 40 years, starting at least as early as 1976. Cat Glover, his dancer/backup singer from 1986-1988 estimated Prince had approximately 2,000 songs in his vault at Paisley Park. And that was in 1988! 😳That number reflects the first 10 years of his output. He kept writing and producing music, and releasing albums for another 28 years--until early 2016. That's why I personally estimate his lifelong output of songs is much closer to 8,000 than 2,000 (the number I see most often cited in articles about him).
@@justinsixx90 the very beginning. It sounds like a kraftwerk track. The synth riff hits and then a pure funk track breaks. It must be a live performance. Dying to know what a lot of the tracks are. They are almost live versions or b studio. Or perhaps the creator has access to the vault 👀
Same! I’m a creativity machine also. I’ve been songwriting my whole damn life, I do follow these lessons in princes work ethic, I’m just not famous. Tbh at this point idc, I may never be famous, but damned if I’m not going to release ALL that’s in the vault I’ve created and been keeping of hundreds of songs, poems, fashions, beats, wisdoms and much more!
I'd had a dream where I met 💜 PRINCE, he was leaving a theater in L.A. and He was polite to me as he walked out to his limousine, when he sat in the back seat with window down he told me that "The Talent I Admired In Him, Was In Me" as the limo drove off it started lightly snowing & I felt Empowered. About a year later I went to LA to visit Friends and the night before I flew out, my friend took me to Prince's LA Night Club, it was "closed" and as we turned the corner of that building to leave, it was the old Theater I'd seen in my Dream! 💜💜💜
This video is Electric!!!! I’m a huge Prince Fan and I really miss the Brother. I got advice from him and this video will be my companion to his advice to me as an Artist. Back in the 90s I worked at a insurance company and I had a supervisor who believe came straight from the depths of hell..😅 Dig it Prince and NPG were going to be at Tower Records here in New York. And this Supervisor knew how big of a fan I was of him. I asked for the day off even offered to work extra overtime to make up for the day off so I could go to Tower Records to meet him. Well that Demon denied me the day off and laid threats of termination. So my cousin went but unfortunately couldn’t get me an Autograph because they were only signing one per person. Dig what my cousin did When he met Prince he said.” Prince my little cousin Drew loves you and inspires to be an Artist like you. What you give me to bring back to Drew? “… He said Prince leaned back in his chair cane in hand and said.. “ You tell Drew I said just be Cool..” Blew me away when my cousin told me . Well I’ve been cool ever since. I was blessed to see him a number of times live , I was even at the Purple Rain tour back in the 80s. And Recently Was able to purchase an Autograph picture which has a great story to it. But I will save that for next time.. please keep up the the fantastic content.. Inshallah and Peace…
And this is why i don't understand how people compare Him to Michael. They are both on separate spectrums. If you want to know what a prodigy looks like thats Prince. If you want to know what artists development looks like thats Michael. 2 totally different outputs of enormous talent.
1.- WORK FAST Work with zero friction = speed. Be in constant flow. 2 - BECOME A FINISHER Stick with one idea while its burning hot until its finished. 3- ABANDON PERFECTIONISM Dont overthink things; keep it moving. Leaving the mistakes in is also leaving the emotion in. Gesture sketches. Momentum: most important aspect of creative process. 4- MAKE ART EVERY DAY If you're awake your making art. Using your gift as often as you can is your responsibility especially if you have something valuable to say. 5- SLEEP Value sleep. 6- VAULT MENTALITY Look at your day like your crafting your legacy. Puts you in a frame of mind of being output driven. Adopt these steps to help yourself reach momentum and flow with increased frequency. God speed to all the creatives out there. Leave fear behind.
Anyone with true vision and talent will always shun outside interference that attempts to alter their artistic ambitions. Prince is a genius and the body of work he left behind speaks for itself.
Not over thinking and keeping productive momentum has helped me vastly. Ill finish a song then keep moving to the next one. Ive been able to write more and faster now. Im less perfect and more productive. Im aiming for song completion and not perfectionism. This is such a great video.
i'm not an artist. i'm an engineer but i'm learning from this greatest takeaway was "becoming a finisher" and to let go of perfectionism most unique one was the vault mentality. I interpreted it as safekeeping all my products/works/notes for myself (coz it feels good to see them increasing like your score in duolingo lol) or safekeeping it for people in the future who can use them as basis for their new work
It`s not necessary to copy the work ethic of someone else when writing Music. It`s not a battle, it`s about writing down words and hearing melodies and receiving this "present" from the Universe. Everybody has it`s own Style. Ofcourse i admire Prince for so many things. He was obvious a Genius and the way he put down and recorded Music was not of this World. It is unique and WE (talking on behalf of Songwriters around the Globe) don`t have to work like him. There are Thousands of wonderful unforgotten Songs which were written in 5 or 10 Minutes, One Hour or stretched over a couple of Monthis. Like i said: It`s not a battle. I have written about 90 Songs so far and 12 Electronic Tracks and i am 52 and very very happy with my Gift and humble that i can perform my Music Live. I bet Prince was very satisfied with his work too...and he was absolutely right: Its all about the Momentum - thats for sure. If you miss that point that most of the time the Song is GONE..forever.
I get a feeling that some of those unheard songs and albums, if brought to light now and listened to, might help make the world a better place. Prince was his own kind of mystic, messenger and healer, and always ahead of his time. I'm willing to bet he wrote some things for right here, right now. 🌟❤️🔥🌟
Its a shame we lost him so young. He was very talented yes because he could play alot of instruments and he knew what he wanted and he had the focus to achieve it. When you can go into a studio and lay down tracks , and mix them by yourself with just a engineer , you have my respect. R.i.p my friend.
What I took away from this video is "Quantity over Quality". Then, release all the Quality stuff. Then the things that fall to the wayside can then be refined for later or shelved as part of your legacy. People say "quantity over quality" is a bad thing, and that's an incredibly valid argument, but I've always thought of Quantity as a tool to craft your vault, your legacy, your world! Create something your fans and listeners can explore. Create something to be discovered as if it's treasure. Good stuff.
LOVED THIS!! Absolutely brilliant and inspiring video - Prince was super insecure, and also died (or burned out) at a relatively young age. His work ( some of it ) will last the rest of time - he was as talented as any of the legends of his era but in my opinion no more or less. This was just his neurotic way of being himself. Many lessons here that ring true but also that lack balance and broader perspective Prince lived like prince - learn from him and live like you !
I'm probably at about 300 or so demos in the vault at 25. 39 released so far plus collaborations and credits. I started originally maybe 4-ish years ago because I grew up wanting to be in my friends' band but was too shy to put myself out there. I learned that Prince stated he also started making music to impress his friends, and coincidentally I stand at merely 5'6" and do it all myself. Now, when I sing a song like "I Wanna Be Your Lover," the tonal resemblance is uncanny. I've had huge Prince fans begrudgingly admit to the comparison, and people that have won multiple Grammy awards say that hearing some of my songs was "the first time they've heard something that they've never heard before." (That comment specifically relates to my song "Contrivance," but I also make stuff that's a bit more familiar). Truthfully, I still am not a huge fan of putting myself out there, and am somewhat resentful of the ego it requires to sell oneself. It's hard to pinpoint quite the right level of comfort between humility and hubris - I say after tooting my own horn. It's wild to me that - even though I'm super unknown right now - I've gotten notified of random people in South America tagging my songs in their stories and such. Still, I'm super depressed and unemployed, so hopefully I can keep things moving. I can't imagine giving up on music, and I hope that one day it becomes as externally gratifying as it is fun to create.
I had a permanent smile on my face thru out this video from the very first second to the very last despite myself....Man, I really loved this brilliant artist. We'll never have any one like him again M.usic has changed so much...
This is a relatable video. I mean when you are in love with what you are doing and have something to say, how can you not be driven? That's the big question. Regardless of whether you like Prince's music or not, the reason for his legendary status was these very points as shown in the video besides having a God-given talent (actually that is not as important as the other reasons). Another less talked about area is his sense of the music business and protecting his work and his rights as an artist. The two other points I would add (not necessarily related to Prince) is that you should not never compare yourself to anyone, not even to someone who may be 100 times more talented than you or to your legendary heroes. As long as you have strong ideas and willing to work with your limitations, you will do something interesting with your life. Your art has to become an integral part of who you are and your life. Its sole purpose should not be for fame and glory. Of course, getting your due recognition is always encouraging but you should not get bogged down if that recognition never seems to come when you hope for... you never know when it comes and how it comes but you still bring out what is inside of you. Santana once said about Hendrix's guitar playing, "He always had his finger on the pulse of life. He played life." P.S. : By the way, how many here noticed Prince's beautiful handwriting?
Feels like a formula for burning out fast if most people did this, tbh. Props to the one in a million person who can handle the literal all-day every-day pace, but there's absolutely no shame in not trying to replicate this. Apply these lessons to what you love, but at your own pace, not at an unrealistic pace. Don't wear yourself out, then beat yourself up for not "keeping up," and end up hating what you loved. An artistic career is all about what's sustainable for YOU.
One thing that people often forget is that he had complete control over his body. Strength, coördination, mobility and flexibility. This was the absolute foundation of everything he did, mentally and physically.
One of my favorite songs by Prince is DANCE ON. That track is so purposely imperfect and the percussions offbeat that its imperfections make it a great song.
I saw this on TikTok and downloaded it to my phone. It's in my favorites folder where it will stay. However, it's good to find this full version all of a sudden. Thanks for posting!
Prince came to town so i went to all 3 shows after the first night i learnt quickly ya gotta get there early cuz when he wants to play he be on that stage early. And each night a different sensory ovrrload of upmost musical joy. 😢 will be missed but his music will live forever long.❤😊
I'd never compare myself with the genius that was Prince but practically every time I plug in my gear I come up with something, I have so many ideas it is overwhelming! How you narrow it down to find the 'right ones' to work on is still a mystery. My brother is still not finished a song he's been working on for 5 years!
Some say that the piece of art is never finished, but abandoned. You can try different techniques for finishing your music. For instance, if you have one idea on guitar, record it, listen to it, and think / feel what else does it need to be complete song? Maybe intro, bridge, and some ending? Write that structure down. Which parts does it need? Drums, bass and keyboards? Write it down. Then, give yourself for instance one day to define structure, and one day for each of the other tracks. But you must stick to that plan. Even if you're not happy with the result. And voila, after few days you'll have finished track. Probably not as good as you wanted it, but you've finished it, and it will give you energy to go through that process again. Try it.
Duuude...your video is so totally aligned with what Prince was about that we got more outta these 10 minutes than we have outta 2-hour long documentaries about The Man! Thank you for this super cool video which is great inspiration for any artist who's lost momentum or drive or is weak in any of these rules.
What a gift he had, and what a gift he gave us! It's sad that his over-exertion (stage antics) caused the physical pain which took him down way too young.
Thanks for the bulletpoint list

This sounds like you're on the verge of a manic collapse, dude. I hope you're well.
FRANK ZAPPA. TOM PETTY. NEIL YOUNG. THEN "the kid", the most prolific after them!
Don't forget ... lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of drugs! ⚰
I'm gonna go out on a limb and say the reason he could 'work' so much is because it wasn't work to him, he was deeply enjoying himself.
you're not going out on a limb at all. It's obvious to anyone that Prince never considered it "work"
exactly.
He was never off tour either. He was constantly throwing concerts year around. Especially after he turned himself into a symbol. he sony would not pay for his tours cause he refused to work for him so he threw his own tours. he was pretty much a james brown. He never stopped. james brown was the hardest working man in entertainment and he was up there with him
I’d imagine this applies to many many musicians, but most of them still don’t work as hard as him.
Also drugs...
Prince was the embodiment of the saying "I was born for this".
No for real I keep dancing movin all the time it’s a song in my body I can’t get it out but in my head baby please I’m shy

It's so great to hear that Prince wasn't a perfectionist. This whole video is so inspiring
Don't they say ' perfect is the enemy of done'?

@@lucasnofal4652 He had to practice to get to that point it is a skill and he got better at it by practing alot
Thank you for that
totally agree
IF IT'S 1 THING THAT I KNOW WITHOUT FAIL IS THE TRUE HISTORY OF MY PEOPLE, THE TRUTH CAN NEVER B DOWNPLAYED, ONLY FEARED
Even the religious side, he was nasty. U had 2 believe what he believed
Mozart-level creativity. His music conveyed so much about him and his efforts.
Humanity is beautiful. Why can't we have more people like them.
Or at least nice people.
This defines Prince, our modern day Mozart.
It’s stunning how similar lots of this sounds to how Frank Zappa was. No point comparing the music, as they had different styles, but Zappa was exactly like this - fiercely independent, incredibly prolific, and a workaholic. He even had a vault they’re now slowly releasing.
Exactly.
Great analogy
and r stevie moore
that's exactly what I was thinking! I've been a major Zappa fan for over 35 years and there are quite a few things they have in common. I'd love to see a longer interview with their "Vaultmeisters" (Joe Travers is the one in Zappa's case)
@@cpkuhnenYeah 😊 me too!
That’s a really good point, thanks for make it clear. I feel like the creator of the video makes one sided advice
same thing with MJ, he worked too hard it killed him
Artists who are creative often have unconventional lives. They aren’t clean and perfect and well ordered. They are often chaotic and messy and filled with pain. If you want calm centered and serene don’t look to an artist like Prince.
When you’re in love with the process, you’re going to become a maestro.
I’ve noticed geniuses have great work ethics.
Prince was the epitome of music!

I'm 52 and a huge prince fan but I write music. I've never lived up to my expectations musically but I have in how I've lived my life off-grid with a wife and kids in the wilderness. It takes work every day and constant commitment.

What does height have to do with musical talent?
Prince knew so much that was overlooked in the business. Women are insanely overlooked even now in the music industry. We’ve made changes but we could do a lot better.
I will say, while the constant drive to produce (which is also work) is impressive, Prince died at a young age, and in a way that feels aligned to a state of overworking / constantly performing.
Also, putting a bed in a studio doesn't mean you value sleep, it is an act of overworking. In Hong Kong, people bring sleeping bags to the office, and I wouldn't say that means they value sleep.
It just comes off as unhealthy obsession.
Prince died of fentanyl.
and he worked that much because he loved what he was doing
Some examples of long living artists: Alejandro Jodorowsky, David Lynch, Elton John...
yes, working for 8 hours a day, only put up work once every 6 month, Rehearse for only 5 minute a day,
is how you become a Normie.
yes you will have balance in life, but you'll also die in a markless grave as if you never exist in the first place.
clearly people who criticize him was a nobody,
while he is cemented in the History as a Legend,
someone who will be remembered even 1000 years from now, he was immortal
leave people with their way of life alone, it's not anyone place to judge, mind your own business.

Prince was one of the greatest creators ever. Peace and Love. ❤
His favorite instrument was the piano. The guitar was his attitude. The piano was where he created everything
The way Prince mind worked was incredible. Prince said "I am music".

@mikedavis8008 wow who hurt you for having the Purple Rain CD?
@mikedavis8008 Prince did not rip off Journey. Neal and or Jonathan spoke on that, Prince actually called Neil, and Jonathan, and asked if they felt Purple Rain was too close to 'Faithfully'. That was professional and courtesy amongst great musicians.
They, Journey, gave Prince their blessing of course. No problem.
Purple Rain is Prince's crossover hit, he was going for that mainstream rock audience, and so it mimics the SPIRIT and power ballad rock of 'Faithfully'.

A song a day for five years? That's unbelievable! Prince was a music-producing machine!!!

Great story. Thanks for sharing ❤
Inshallah.. Thank you for listening and replying
We loved you, we still miss you! Thank you what you did to us.
This needs to be more popular
Man was blessed with talent, passion and discipline. Dedication.
Nobody has more talent💜
You know what's up
Not true.
Most overrated "artist" ever. Not to mention he was a total ass.
Fanboy
Eddie van halen
And this is why i don't understand how people compare Him to Michael. They are both on separate spectrums. If you want to know what a prodigy looks like thats Prince. If you want to know what artists development looks like thats Michael. 2 totally different outputs of enormous talent.
1.- WORK FAST
Work with zero friction = speed. Be in constant flow.
2 - BECOME A FINISHER
Stick with one idea while its burning hot until its finished.
3- ABANDON PERFECTIONISM
Dont overthink things; keep it moving. Leaving the mistakes in is also leaving the emotion in. Gesture sketches. Momentum: most important aspect of creative process.
4- MAKE ART EVERY DAY
If you're awake your making art. Using your gift as often as you can is your responsibility especially if you have something valuable to say.
5- SLEEP
Value sleep.
6- VAULT MENTALITY
Look at your day like your crafting your legacy.
This is such a great video.
i'm not an artist. i'm an engineer but i'm learning from this
greatest takeaway was "becoming a finisher" and to let go of perfectionism
most unique one was the vault mentality. I interpreted it as safekeeping all my products/works/notes for myself (coz it feels good to see them increasing like your score in duolingo lol) or safekeeping it for people in the future who can use them as basis for their new work
A Tupac and Prince collaboration would've been epic!
Wow.. cause he knowed himself very well... Know thyself they said. That's why he become A STAR. Love you Prince, rest in peace..
Prince, MJ, David Bowie, and Billy Idol were my role models growing up!
❤
Good stuff.
You understand the message 🙌🏾
LOVED THIS!! Absolutely brilliant and inspiring video -
Prince was super insecure, and also died (or burned out) at a relatively young age.
His work ( some of it ) will last the rest of time - he was as talented as any of the legends of his era but in my opinion no more or less. This was just his neurotic way of being himself.
Many lessons here that ring true but also that lack balance and broader perspective
Prince lived like prince - learn from him and live like you !
When content is good, you don't need to ask for "like, subscribe and share". This is great content.
Lesson 7: have Princes talent.
ABC = Always Be Creating
brilliant. no rehash. quick to the point. prince.
"using your gift as often as possible is your responsibility"
I had a permanent smile on my face thru out this video from the very first second to the very last despite myself....Man, I really loved this brilliant artist. We'll never have any one like him again M.usic has changed so much...
Cant wait to grow old and get every 5 Years a new banger album from prince. This guy is music!
So this is what kendrick Lamar was talking about
@JONeal826 Kendrick is a true poet and my favorite rapper.
He played life."
P.S. : By the way, how many here noticed Prince's beautiful handwriting?
Love the he used so many women as musicians and as shown here engineers and mixers.
This is what I never knew about Prince and something I believe God even challenged me about recently...never stop being creative
What an inspiring video. - “His music would come out like a sneeze.” Greatest quote ever!
One thing that people often forget is that he had complete control over his body. Strength, coördination, mobility and flexibility. This was the absolute foundation of everything he did, mentally and physically.
Also, drugs. 😂
@@saym2756 Might be indeed. I think so too. Still a very interesting discussion.
Prince was amazing ! His work lives on! ❤
Prince and Frank Zappa were creative forces of nature who transcended genius.
Just an observation, both were anti-drug and alcohol.
Frank Zappa's not even close to being genius, just an observation.
@@Ashamed.Loser69😂
Really, Frank Zappa, he may be good but no where near Prince's level of genius.
He and Michael Jackson would have been 66 this year.
Prince was a one of a kind! Miss you Prince! ❤
One of my favorite songs by Prince is DANCE ON. That track is so purposely imperfect and the percussions offbeat that its imperfections make it a great song.
I love the ethos of your channel. 🙌🏻👏🏻
As a grieving artist, this inspired me. Thank you.
I saw this on TikTok and downloaded it to my phone. It's in my favorites folder where it will stay. However, it's good to find this full version all of a sudden. Thanks for posting!
Thank you bro you really are a saint
Wow crafting his legacy. That described Prince perfectly.
Try it.
Holy sh!t, I loved his music for about 40 years, but never knew his genius and work ethic like this!
I've watched this many many times. When i feel uninspired, and lazy. I watch this to snap me back me into high gear.
as lovely as always father
TY!
