Over the past few months, I was treating 2019 as a failure. I didn't create as much as I wanted, I didn't complete some running goals and I let myself down a lot. What I failed to acknowledge was just how successful 2019 actually was! From Tiger Claw, a top iTunes album, amazing consistency in content creation, pacing and filming multiple friends at their A-races, to even attempting my own 100 mile race after a 4 year period of time away from the distance. I adventured a ton, I stayed healthy, I lived and I loved. That sounds like a success to me! For years I wanted to complete the arbitrary goal of running a 100 mile training week. Outside of running a 100 mile race, I've come close a couple of times, but had never been able to complete it purely. I figured what better way to close out 2019 - and the decade - then by finally knocking out 100 miles over 7 days.
Same dude, love the channel. Your quality videos & other vloggers' inspired my voyage into the ultra way. I learned a lot about myself 2019. 2020, let's get it done Ethan!!
Congrats on a great goal realized. Signed up for my first 50 miler later this year. As for the game Ollie Ollie oxen free. Yep, played that game too. Not too clear on how it was played. Happy New Year!!!
Two years ago I had a week off work. Weather was good, so I went out into the woods for a run every day. Just for the fun of it. I didn't plan this, it just happened due to the favorable conditions. After six days I realized that I am at 90+ km. Although it rained at the last day, I went out for an additional 10 km, just to complete the 100 km / week mile stone. Never ever had I run so many km per week before. Even at my best times, before my health problems started, that limit the amount of running I can do. Sometimes you have to challenge your self with a goal. Sometimes you just have to go with the flow. In either case you may go beyond your expectations.
This video inspired me to do my first 60 mile week! In August of 2018, I weighed over 310 pounds, lost 130 pounds by June of 2019, and ran my first mile that same month! I did my first half marathon at the beginning of September, and my first Ultra Marathon (33 miles, 10k ft of climbing) in November. Did a 14.4 mile section of the Appalachian Trail, and saw I was only a simple 5k away from hitting 60 miles this week. So I changed clothes, went to the gym, and did 3.5 miles on the treadmill just to hit the mark! Thanks for your ever-inspiring content, it helps lots of us.
Yes! I remember finding the GR about-half-an-hour films, and loving them. Drew me into youtube running world (at a great cost to my efficiency in life), and inspired running! Really enjoyed this. Thanks!
My deal for 2020 is called Project 41. I plan to run the 41 mile Maryland segment of the Appalachian Trail this October to represent my 41st birthday. Great job on your achievement! I found you as I became a full-fledged runner this past year, and your videos have been an absolute inspiration. Keep up the awesome work! Thank you.
congrats man! i did a 3 digit week once (109.88). i did it mostly with double days. it was very difficult, especially since i was at work 10-12 hours a day. lots of night running. every minute of my week was spent thinking about the next run and trying to recover from the previous run... rollers/ stretching/ eating/ drinking. it's crazy how rewarding it is to have accomplish that. and very doable
I use to do 90-100 mpw all the time in college for XC and Track. Now i look back and wonder how the hell i was able to do that while being a full-time student. Im wiped out from running 70 mpw now and working full-time. I know you felt good to hit 100!
The part about running that is an always recurring theme, for me, is the simple fact that being able to choose to run hard proves that things are pretty alright. If I can purposely stress my body for fun I must have a pretty damn good life- nothing special about me for running. It is special for me that I can run.
Just came back after years of not watching... Forgot what I was missing out on! your passion for running/life and relationship with Kim are so inspiring.
I couldn't help but burst into tears of joy as I watched you complete that last mile. You are such an inspiration to me. You are an amazing individual! Thank you for all that you do!
Awesome! I’m going for a 75 mile week before summer. When I hit that, I’m gonna aim for a 100 mile week, too. I think it’ll help me to break under 3hours for the 2021 LA marathon. This year, I’m aiming to qualify for Boston (I’m 42, so I need 3:10). This is so cool! My hope is that high milage will make keeping my marathon pace kore consistent.
I’m at 50-65 right now, depending on my work schedule. 75 seems super doable, but I’ve thought about 100 for the last full year. It’s a pretty hefty number though. 15 miles x 6 days and then a relaxing 10 miler. Hahaha!!
Fantastic video. Inspiring to watch and I will set a goal of 100 miles in a week this year. I may have to watch this video again to help me get there. Thanks.
Hey Ethan, just completed my first 100 Mile Week. Thanks for the inspiration. It kicked my butt! Monday: 7 Mile Run Tuesday: 13 Mile Run Wednesday: 7.25 Mile Run & 10 Mile Run Thursday: 10 Mile Run and 7.25 Mile Run Friday: 5 Mile Run and 10 Mile Run Saturday: 18 Mile Run and 7.5 Mile Run Sunday: 5 Mile Run
Holy crap 2019 was a mind game. I relate to your intro a lot. Nearing the end of 2019 I seemed to obsess over failing at 2019 when, in fact, I kicked its ass. There was so much "new" in it that I think I obsessed over the "usuals" that I didn't get done.
Awesome! Congrats! The Ollie Ollie Otsen Free comment reminded me of three games that we would play as kids. 1st- Tag/Hide&Seek. The seeker would start off counting down from a home base location. If a hinder was able to get to the home base without getting tagged, they would announce "Ollie Ollie Otsen Free". 2nd - We would toss a ball over the roof of the house as well, but I don't remember chasing anyone down afterwards... maybe we did though... and I can't remember what we called the game. 3rd - Rover Red Rover. we would form two team in an open field. One side would join arms to form a "fence" and announce "Rover Red Rover, send right over". Said person would run across the field in an attempt to break through the fence. If this person succeeded, they would return to their side. If not, they would become apart of the fence side. Then the other side would form the fence in an attempt to catch a runner.
Wow!! I am smack dab in the middle of my first ever 100 mile training week and I stumbled on this tonight. Thank you so much for your video, I have watched a few of your others before and this made my night. Keep crushing it!
Why would anyone give this video a thumbs down🤔🤔 That makes me sad😔 Way to go Ethan!! You are ALWAYS inspiring me! Keep smiling & crushing your goals🤩🤗
Awesome job Ethan!!! Proud of you bro.! My biggest recorded week was 93 back in 1989 (usually running 80 mile weeks) when I was just turned 17 years old before my senior year of high school. We won our sectionals and went to states! The next summer turning 18 and graduating from high school I ran 80 mile weeks to get ready for college cross country (5 mile races) where I ran under 28 minutes on super hilly courses. I took 25 years off and have been running again for a few years now and did a 5k in under 20 minutes. Thank you Ethan for your channel! - It really gets me out there and keeps me going!
Ethan, quite simply, thank you. As I gear up this morning for a New Year’s Day 10K in an effort to get my 2020 running year off on the right foot, you have given me a new goal to shoot for. I am grateful.
Your day one was a run down memory lane for me. I love running along Lake Washington and looping it at Seward Park. Thank you for sharing your 100 mile week.
Fantastic work, dude. I've only been running for 3 years (38 years old) and had only done short, quick runs, no more than 2 miles per run, 3 or 4 runs per week. But this year I decided to challenge my endurance and have upped my mileage and just yesterday hit 102 miles in two weeks. And I feel fantastic. My goal is 150 for the month and I'm on pace to hit 200. Feels good to prove to myself I can do this.
Way to go bud! I have been running just over a year. In October I wanted to see if I could run 100 miles for the month. I ended up with 148 miles behind me for the month of October. People run a lot more, but it was hard. Good ol' fashion hard. I ran a 10k, 5 days a week for the month. To say you learn a lot about yourself (and much more) is just an understatement. Way to go. Just doing something that people think it's crazy is so rewarding!
Yes! We played Ollie Ollie Oxen Free the same way, except we used whatever kind of ball one of the neighborhood boys had laying around! So yeah, it's a thing.
Wow, what a video!! Hit me in the feels at the end. I'm on my own journey to hit 100 miles, and building my mileage each week. I'm a 2:53 marathoner, and I've just completed my biggest mileage week ever of 138 km's (85 miles), and hope to do 150 km's (93 miles) this week. Great to see that it is doable. You really nailed this video with the music as well. Congrats on your 100 miles and music achievements:)
Good for you man. Good job! I'm just pushing towards 100k, got pretty close a few times but never quite made a serious attempt. 100 mile week could be fun for this year. Thank you for the inspiration and the honesty that it is actually hard to accomplish even for dedicated runners.
Congratulations Ethan, and yet another fantastic film. It's people like you that inspire me to push the envelope of my own running. This year I'm trying to run every day of this leap year. So far I'm 4 miles in and feel'n good! Happy New Year!
Great job! I like how you made it a goal instead of part of a training week which is tough because you don’t want to get hurt leading in to a race. 72 miles (including a 100k race) is the most I’ve ran in a week. Crazy how hard it is.
So inspiring man! I had similar feelings about 2019 - didn’t feel that I had accomplished enough since I didn’t get my coffee table book published in the timeline that I had hoped. But then I had to remind myself that it wasn’t all negative: I ran my first ultra marathon (Born to Run in May) and as a commercial photographer/director - I created work that I am rather proud of - I’ve had to constantly remind myself that social media wants us to feel that we’re never doing or showing/sharing enough - and we have to push past that. And films and goals like what you just did are exactly that - freakin’ big goals that take time and show you how far you can push yourself - on your own timeline. And dang man! This film was great man - agree with the others that it has the old school Ginger Runner vibe. Nice man.
100 miles is definitively doable but you need that mental strength. My distance has increased almost to 80km when normally I used to do around 50-65km. One good way to challenge myself would be to get to 100km first and maybe later on to 100miles, all depends how I can manage my time with work/family. Nice job Ethan! keep a good year 2020 and accomplish your future goals.
@gingerrunner thank you for the continuous inspiration and motivation. I am recovering from a severe back injury and have the Big Sur marathon in April. Your videos always provide me with the motivation needed to get out and run! Can’t thank you enough.
@3:18 ... "It's so cold" ... GIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNGGGGGEERRRRRRRRR!!!!! Come run with us in Wisconsin in January! Love your passion & professionalism & content ... keep setting and chasing goals!
Thanks for the ongoing brilliant content! My running has been very minimal in recents months, heard about your goal and I finished 105 miles in seven days!
Great video Ethan. I love personal non-race goals more than race goals. This video reminded me of why I’ve wanted to run the entire Georgia section of the App Trail the past few years. Thanks for the motivation, it’s happening this year.
Can I just say how inspiring your channel is! I have just started my own journey on UA-cam by entering my first 24 hour race! Straight in at the deep end! Keep uploading my man! 🙏
Shipmate, that was a great video! I'm entering 2020 deployed in Afghanistan, with a bad case of bronchitis. Feeling very detached from my happy place that is the beautiful trails of the PNW. This video brought a big smile to my face and got me psyched to get through this deployment and set some big goals for when I return home to the great pacific northWET. Thanks for this video!
Thanks for your service brother. Im deployed on the Horn of Africa right now. Watching this video helped keep my mind at ease knowing I will be able to run my good old trails here in a few months. Hope the rest of your deployment goes well. Those trails will be waiting for you when you get back.
I watched this when you first posted it and thought how awesome it was for you to complete and wondered if I could complete a 100 week. Well last week I took on the 100 mile run week challenge as part of a virtual event by UK-based Centurion Running. Granted I’d never run more than 30 miles in a week and with shortened daylight hours and work it was going to be difficult to run doubles so I back-loaded my mileage into the last few days over my long Thanksgiving weekend and ran 65 miles between Thur-Sat. I started on Mon. Nov 23 and finished my 100th mile on Sat. Nov 28. All runs were solo and included a marathon and a 25 miler, both as single runs. Thanks for the idea and inspiration because before your video I only envisioned top tier elite and professional runners completing 100 mile training weeks!
Congrats!! What a great video! Funny, after watching so many of your videos I just assumed you cranked out serious miles everyday! I can tell you that watching your videos over the last couple of years keeps me inspired to keep floundering down the trail and this year I will have my first actual trail race ever! It's only a 5k but we'll see where it goes. Thank you, Ethan and Kim for making all of us want to get out there and keep on runnin'!
Another great video, Ethan - love the production and music as always :) Watching the beautiful Seattle scenery was a nice distraction while getting today's treadmill run done (smoke from bushfires here in Australia is forcing a lot of runners to have to train indoors, but obviously thankful to be able to train at all when there are so many who have far greater concerns). Keep doing what you're doing, your videos bring a lot of joy and motivation to so many
Well done Ethan, inspiring stuff. Most I’ve done to date is about 45 but with a marathon ahead of me in October if I could get up to maybe 75 that would be great. I’m with you on hydration vests, I wear mine any time I want to carry stuff regardless of distance
Congrats on the 100week, man. I think I'm following your journey, indirectly, to discovering how great it is to run out here. I saw some of my routes in your video. I was hoping the weather held off for you, but that one day was rain no matter what. Good work.
Oh my word man! I’m over here training for my first 100km and am SO SLOW it takes a HUGE amount of time! What an inspiration you are....stop wishing start doing right?!?!
You have been providing me with inspiration and you have been a huge motivator for me for the past several years as I have been an avid watcher, finally “taking the shot” so today that I signed up for my first (Catamount 50K VT) ultra in June. Congratulations on your 100 mile week, a wonderful video. Thanks. Happy New Year.
Haven't been following too much the past year but with that said, I've been following long enough to know that this goal was an accomplishment for you. WAY TO GO! Stoked for you!
Great job on the 100 mile week. I knew you could do it but you never know how the body is going to react to that kind of stress. I'm working on everyday activity for 2020 and focusing on running even if it is only one mile. Some are calling it my running streak. I'm at 16 days and 76.21 miles. I should see a year full of 100 mile months at the end of this year. Thanks for all of your well produced running videos. Very inspirational.
Amazing video and great job on the 100 mile week. You really do a great job showing how awesome Cougar Mtn is and hope to see you out on the trails in 2020.
Just completed my first 100 mile week yesterday. Hardest part for me was to mentally keep going. Thankfully the body is in good shape. Well done on your achievement. I watched half of this video a few months ago and was thinking about it last week. So I came back to it this morning to finish it off. 👍 cheers for the cool video
2019- the year that I thought I would not survive. Now.... learning to put one foot in front of the other and work through the badness to get to good. I am excited for you meeting your goal, and can see the pride in your expression.s. My hope is to make myself better each and every single day that I lace em up and get my big body out there for some miles. Thanks for the inspiration.
Thanks for creating this video of your journey. I’m glad you’ve discovered that your body is so much more capable than you think it is. Not only did you grow physically, but you mentally grew even stronger. One of my favorite running videos now. Keep up the great work!
My first big ultra was supposed to happen in May (80 miles) and I just remembered watching this video when it came out. I think it's interesting that people still divide up their training weeks by the days of the week (7). I mean obviously, it makes sense, but really, it doesn't have to be that way. My training weeks are split into 9 days and I find that so much more approachable than 7. I'm pretty sure (up for debate) that if anything, it makes prioritizing health and recovery a lot easier. Just a passing thought as I remembered this video, congrats Ethan on being an approachable and relatable inspiration
O wow. I also attempted a hundred miler this year. In the same month too. First time I heard someone else say it. I feel relieved in some sort of weird way.
Awesome man... I woke up this morning and was worried about miles as i have a cold and i'm training for my first 50k in June. Sounds like i have a long time but not really...and then your video popped up. 1 video, 2 coffees later and some wholemeal toast and i'm ready to go! Great job Ethan...well done and happy new year!
Amazing work Ethan! This is a goal of mine as well at some point and seeing you get through it was super inspiring! And what better coach than David to have supporting this goal! Loved the support of your local crew, too!
2020 goal- doing Tiger Claw and high fiving Ethan when I cross that finish line and goal 2 is hoping to do my first 50K as well. Thanks for the inspiration Ethan!
Loved it Ethan! I don’t know why you worried about the vest, I wear one for any run pushing double digits. You can can always have a “Jour Sans” and need a bit of food or water...it’s better to have it than not! Great job! 👏🏻🙌🏻👊🏻
When I was a kid we'd yell "Ollie Ollie Oxen Free" when the kid who was It in Hide and Seek had given up. It let all the other kids know that they could come out from their hiding spots. (1970's Ontario, Canada for context)
You are such an inspiration man! I've been following you for many years, and I really love your energy, mood and way you put things together! Happy New Year! All the best to both the three of you!
Man, this inspiring video is coming out at just the right time for me. Starting phase 2 of my diet on Monday and have been increasing my distance slowly but am going to also be upping the number of days I run. This video makes me feel I really can do it so thanks again for the inspiration Ethan. Happy new year.
Great achievement. Thoroughly enjoyed watching this as I do all your videos, especially your numerous adventures. Keep up the good work and all the best for 2020.
Hey GR…I'm glad you found clarity surrounding your 2019 running year! As an outsider looking in, I'd say your year was very successful and that you have a hell of a lot to be thankful for…you are part of such an amazing community, full of support and love…it's great to have people by your side who share your vision and dreams and who will help you get there through thick and thin! I wish you all the best for 2020 and a big congratulations on your 100mi week! Greetings from South Africa 🇿🇦
It just goes to show that you are so much stronger that you realize, so much more than you realize. 2019 rocked as a year and it was a real treat to watch it happen for you, from the other side of the world. You ARE a success. You ALWAYS WERE a success. You're Ethan Newberry - The Ginger Runner - enough said. Happy 2020 may it rock as much for you as it's going to for me ;-)
Fantastic work: what a week, what a great video. After my year(s) of recovery and slowly regaining trust in my body, I’m starting to feel an itch to think up and try new projects for myself, and seeing you do this ánd document it in this fantastic way, adds a _WHOLE_ lot of spark to my fire. Thank you Ethan (and Kim), for your continious stream of inspiration. Have a great 2020!
It was good following your week and even better seeing on film. So good to see how you stuck to your plan and just got on with it and worked through the miles. Thanks for all your videos throughout 2019.
This video was absolutely perfect. I loved that it was almost 30 minutes long! Inspiring video and was a perfect way to end the year. Thank you Ethan for inspiring me and countless other people each day :)
Awesome job dude!! Great team way to complete your goal! I hope your pup is ok. 2020 is going to be another great year! Thanks for always sharing...:')

2020, let's get it done Ethan!!
learn that doubles are the easy way to get this done? - Life goal ticked off bud .. one step at a time ❤️
Wow, along with everything else, a 100mile training week is amazing! Maybe one day I'll get there too :)))
Congrats on a great goal realized. Signed up for my first 50 miler later this year. As for the game Ollie Ollie oxen free. Yep, played that game too. Not too clear on how it was played. Happy New Year!!!

Just wanted to say I really liked this video and you’re presentation of the whole thing. The music, the little instagram clips...great job
GiovanniClean yeah it made it fun to watch for 27 mins of training runs. Plus the cool GR soundtrack!!

My big mile week years ago was 140. Leading to a 2:23:20 Marathon. I had two rough miles of cramping or I'd broke 2:20. Such is running!
Why would anyone give this video a thumbs down🤔🤔 That makes me sad😔
Way to go Ethan!! You are ALWAYS inspiring me! Keep smiling & crushing your goals🤩🤗

I love the personal goal irrespective of any formal race. Oh, yeah, you also spent a lot of time producing this!
2 years of watching GR and I still get excited when a new GR video pops up on UA-cam. Congrats on the 100 Mile week Ethan! F'n awesome!
Fantastic! I will try to copy that before my Boston Marathon debut in april.
I have been trying to do this for over 12 + years!!! Thanks for your inspiration
Good for you man. Good job! I'm just pushing towards 100k, got pretty close a few times but never quite made a serious attempt. 100 mile week could be fun for this year. Thank you for the inspiration and the honesty that it is actually hard to accomplish even for dedicated runners.
2 weeks ago I did my first 100 km week. It was a great feeling and I'm happy that I didn't injured myself. 🎉🎉🙏🙏
Ollie Ollie oxen free was definitely played in Houston, Texas 30+ years ago or at least in my neighborhood. Hadn’t thought of that in decades. Wow!
played in Minnesota too.
Played by all military kids on bases throughout the world as well. I don't remember the rules. But we had a great time.
Congratulations Ethan, and yet another fantastic film. It's people like you that inspire me to push the envelope of my own running. This year I'm trying to run every day of this leap year. So far I'm 4 miles in and feel'n good! Happy New Year!
Adam Karcz nice! Get it!
@3:18 ... "It's so cold" ...
Thanks for this video!
hope you get better soon!
Thanks for your service brother. Im deployed on the Horn of Africa right now. Watching this video helped keep my mind at ease knowing I will be able to run my good old trails here in a few months. Hope the rest of your deployment goes well. Those trails will be waiting for you when you get back.
Stay safe brother and thank you for your service.
Thank you Ethan! This is now my goal for 2020.
Been following you on Strava. Great to see the video of you actually doing it. Happy new year 🎉🎉🎉
Another great video, Ethan - love the production and music as always :)
Watching the beautiful Seattle scenery was a nice distraction while getting today's treadmill run done (smoke from bushfires here in Australia is forcing a lot of runners to have to train indoors, but obviously thankful to be able to train at all when there are so many who have far greater concerns).
Congrats Ethan! And kudos to Kim for being such a rock. Can’t wait to see what you do for 2020 and beyond! Thanks for being such an inspiration.
Amazing video and great job on the 100 mile week. You really do a great job showing how awesome Cougar Mtn is and hope to see you out on the trails in 2020.
Amazing - thanks as always Ethan! Perfect inspiration for 2020 goals... which might include my first 50 miler!
I love these videos where you document your adventures. Congratulations on your accomplishment and thank you for taking us along on the journey!
Great video! Ethan, you are a very inspirational and humble guy. Excited to see what’s in store for 2020!
Well done, very inspired - I will set 100 miles as a goal for 2020, thanks
Yes!! Olly Olly Oxen Free! I played this as a kid!
Great job! Thanks for an incredibly fun and inspirational chronicle of your achievement.
Loved this so much! Watching both of your guys station now. Perfect TV ish shows!👍
A other amazingly produced video. Thanks Ethan.
Thanks for creating this video of your journey. I’m glad you’ve discovered that your body is so much more capable than you think it is. Not only did you grow physically, but you mentally grew even stronger. One of my favorite running videos now. Keep up the great work!
Ethan, you’re crushing it, thanks for all the entertaining content, you’re living the dream buddy!
Awesome job, Ethan. Thank you for, once again, sharing with us your journey
Thank you for contributing to my insomnia with this great content. 100 miles is usually my monthly goal. Great job.
Good for you for sticking with it!
Oh cool a foggy trail run from the Ginger Runner...boy am I glad it’s not around Halloween this time!
oh man I miss the PNW. Thanks for reminding me of those mysterious winters (le sigh)
Thank you for sharing Ethan!! Wonderful shots of the west coast winter.
All very inspiring. I haven’t done a 100 mile week before.
Andy Aitch Same! But in 1980s Hong Kong.
Same goes for me (but 1990's Ontario, Canada)
same this was a cry to get every one out from hiding.
but 1980s NY
Same in Cincinnati 1970's
You are such an inspiration man! I've been following you for many years, and I really love your energy, mood and way you put things together! Happy New Year! All the best to both the three of you!
Man, this inspiring video is coming out at just the right time for me. Starting phase 2 of my diet on Monday and have been increasing my distance slowly but am going to also be upping the number of days I run. This video makes me feel I really can do it so thanks again for the inspiration Ethan. Happy new year.
Perdomot YOU CAN!
You guys are amazing. What a great and supportive couple and awesome friends!
Nevermind anything else, this was your goal and you did it. Great way to say goodbye to 2019. Have a great 2020.
Great achievement. Thoroughly enjoyed watching this as I do all your videos, especially your numerous adventures. Keep up the good work and all the best for 2020.
Beautiful video, Ethan! Congratulations on your 100 mile week, you continue to be such an awesome source of inspiration!
Happy 2020 may it rock as much for you as it's going to for me ;-)
great video and has inspired a back of the pack/just trying to finish runner to do a 50 mile training week.
Amazing job Ethan!! What a great accomplishment!! That’s awesome!!
Fantastic video and very inspiring. It's so easy to downplay our accomplishments until we look back and reflect on what we've actually achieved.
Olly olly oxen free - we used as a call out in games such as hide and seek, capture the flag, and you changed sides
Kick the can but olly olly exen free
Olly olly in-come free - we used it to end games, so everyone would come in and we could restart
Awesome job dude!! Great team way to complete your goal! I hope your pup is ok. 2020 is going to be another great year! Thanks for always sharing...:')
We definitely played ollyollyox and free in Galveston growing up in the 80's👌. Good times.
