Panel discussion with the filmmaker and appellate attorney
Texas A&M University School of Law Criminal Law, Justice, and Policy Program and the Criminal Law Society present a discussion of the film 'The State of Texas vs. Melissa' with the filmmaker Sabrina Van Tassel and Richard Ellis, one of the defendant’s appellate attorneys. Texas A&M Law Professor Meg Penrose moderates the discussion and presents questions submitted by Texas A&M Law students.
The film, 'The State of Texas vs. Melissa,' was shown at the virtual Tribeca Film Festival this year and was released on October 20. This documentary tells the story of Melissa Lucio, the first Latina on death row in Texas. The case is still under appeal in the Fifth Circuit.
Presented with support by the Texas A&M Law Women’s Law Student Association, the Latinx Law Students Association, and the Women of Color Collective Law Student Association.
