I recently had an induction and was contracting for hours before I decided to get the epidural, I wanted to work my way up the pain relief, but honestly in hindsight I don't know why I wanted to wait for the epidural. If you're open to getting one, get one as soon as you can in my opinion! It gave me so much relief and I could enjoy labour a bit more with minimal pain (apart from some pressure pains later on). At first I didn't even believe I was still contracting, it was fantastic! 😊

Yeah, if you’re being induced, just get the catheter in before they turn on the oxytocin. You don’t even have to have the analgesic going, just get the catheter in. Better than having a ton of pain and not being able to sit still for the epidural catheter placement.
I had a similar experience. I had my second and I said I didn’t want an epidural. Well, contractions started and they came on STRONG. I got an epidural and my baby came way sooner than I thought he would. I felt absolutely nothing when he came out. I will say my back did hurt for about two days after and that made it difficult to sleep but I know it saved me the more intense pain.
I am still upset no one told me inductions cause much more severe contractions and back labor. Which, for me, was unbearable and amplified by a major spinal issue I have. To make matters worse they started me on a Sunday evening and then everyone left. By 5 am i was in absolute turmoil and the nurse said the anesthesiologist wouldn't even be available for another couple hours. The epidural itself took 45 minutes and 7 tries and the tanked my BP. They were never able to really get it back up so i ended up with an emergency c section. The whole thing was horrible.
How bad does the initial numbing injection hurt? Can you compare it to any other pain?
I got an epidural with my first and it was a very positive experience for me. I initially didn't want to do it because I'm scared of needles and I heard all these horror stories around it. But then in the hospital, the pain was worse than the fear and I asked for it, and am so thankful I did. My water broke first thing in the morning after waking up and I basically dove straight into labor - no long build up, no small contractions over time, hard and painful and fast from the get go, for HOURS. I hadn't even eaten anything yet that day, either, so I got exhausted very quickly. After the epidural, I finally got some rest. I did get kind of woozy at first and needed to be on oxygen for the remainder of my labor, but I got to rest and even eat a granola bar I think. Just the sheer relief I felt was unmatched. So now that I'm pregnant with my second, I'm very open to having the epidural again. It made giving birth to my daughter a much more positive experience.

Didn’t epidural cause backache in your case?
With my first baby, my water broke and I was receiving induction gel every few hours but my cervix wouldn't open. On a third day they were already giving me a double gels and I was contracting like crazy every 4-5min for another day. At this point I was already exhausted, barely slept and nurse convinced me to get an epidural. What a relief!! I have relaxed a bit, could do exercises and my cervix finally started to open. Baby was progressing down and in few hours was already on my chest. I'm so grateful for medicine and all the people in hospital that helped me get through it. In two months I'm going there again. I won't be refusing epidural for as long.
I had one with my first, wanted one with my son but he was born in the car. That was, all in all, a better experience. So I plan to go without the epidural for my third baby in December.
I was 10 cm, fully effaced and actively pushing but baby was not properly engaged with the pelvis so we went from the midwifery to the hospital, and since I'd been in labor for about 12 hours at that point and had been pushing for half that long, they gave me an epidural to let me rest. I will tell you, when you've endured that much childbirth, that pinch is NOTHING. I did feel some pressure/discomfort in my left hip, told the anesthesiologist, and he made the most subtle adjustment and then nothing-was totally good after that. They did slow down the contractions quite a bit so when I got some rest they had to start pitocin to get things moving again but going in a second time I'm planning on getting the epidural (maybe a lower dose).
A good anesthesiologist is a godsend, honestly.
If you are 8 cm > and you are experiencing back labor get the epidural. You actually have a choice in deciding whether you want to feel everything but be comfortable. I was 10 cm dilated and started pushing and they still gave it to me. I still was able to feel everything. You are not missing out in any experience. It’s harder to get epidural when contractions are closer together rather than being spaced farther out
I had back labor with all three babies so far, and only got an epidural with my first.
I got a csf leak and spinal headache. I ended up needing a blood patch. The headache was incredibly painful and it was scary. I got to 5cm without epidural and was doing pretty well but I was afraid of how I would do with continuing and intensifying pain. My epidural was also so strong i could not feel myself pushing. I felt zero pressure. I ended up with an episiotomy and vacuum assisted and then I also could not pee after and that was so uncomfortable. I'm pregnant with my second now. Hoping for a quick labor this time so that I won't need an epidural this time. I'm definitely scared of the pain but I'm terrified of having so many negative side effects again.
I wish I saw this video before I had my son in 2019. I didn’t want an epidural, but when it came to transition and 10/10 pain I asked for one - the nurses knew I didn’t want it, I was already at 8cm. None of them told me that it was too late or tried to encourage me to keep going. Not one person told me about ANY side effects. Thankfully my son was born completely healthy. I however got a CSF leak, leading to an excruciating 6 day head ache. My breast milk never came in, no period for 3.5 years- finally discovered that due to the CSF Leak from the epidural my pituitary gland was completely damaged. Sheehan’s syndrome. I have to take ALL my hormones via prescription (thyroid, progesterone, estrogen and testosterone) and I can’t ovulate on my own bc no LH or FSH so chances of having more children are very low! My recommendation - don’t get one! Our bodies were made for this. The pain is temporary and the relief from that pain is not worth the risk!

I had an epidural with my second labor a month ago (and at my first). I had a fairly quick labor, so I was only in the hospital for an hour before I gave birth. This isn’t a lot of time to get the pre process of the epidural done, and then getting the epidural and it having time to come into effect. Apparently it takes longer to come into effect when you’re well into active labor!
I didn’t experience any relief, I believe from my contraction pain, or maybe I felt like 80% of it, just in the last 20 kinutes. Luckily it did help lesson the vaginal pain of the actual delivery. I screamed with pushing during the last five minutes or so, and I never thought I would do that (my first labor was slower and the epidural worked well, so I didn’t scream then).
Still glad I got it, though. Glad it could take the edge off a little bit. The pain of the needles to get it is minimal compared to active contraction pain, and I did have lingering back pain for like a day after, but that was quite tolerable too, especially since I mainly just felt it when getting up, and I pretty much stayed in bed for the first few days anyway.
Yess so true same happened with me my first kid the labor was slow and I took it early on and I was able to relax but second kid I had it was much quicker so barley had time to get epidural and it barely took the pain off by a little

I've had 5 babies naturally and am pregnant with #6, and have been thinking about getting an epidural because I plan to be induced. But I have always felt like it'd be awful, and after this video you pretty much confirmed it for me. I'd rather deal with painful contractions for hours than have a needle stuck between my bones. I don't like feeling numb anyway.

Also pregnant with baby #6 Idk my induction contractions were horrible compared to my natural contractions. I've gone natural and induction and I wont go induction without the epidural
@@hannahm.9881 I had an induction with my 4th because he was super overdue. It was way worse than natural contractions, like WAY WAY worse, but from the time they started pitocin to the time I had him was only about 45 minutes. They had broken my water about an hour beforehand and I think I had sort of started labor at that point, so I imagine that intensified and sped up things. But either it was really fast, and I imagine it'll be pretty fast again since this is my 6th baby and my labors in general are pretty short (my first was the longest at 14 hours, everyone after that has been 6 hours or less). I wouldn't consent to having my water broken this time though, I much prefer that to happen naturally. And I still am open to an epidural if induction takes a really long time, but I'd like to try without it because I really hate feeling numb and the idea of not being able to move or be in any position other than on my back sounds really awful. I'd rather be in a lot of pain for a short amount of time than be numb for hours and deal with side effects afterwards.
Yea don’t worry you have given birth many times your labour will be way shorter!

I live in Mexico so things are a little different here. I was at a private hospital with my very own medical team- OB, Neonatologist, Anesthesiologist, and nurse. I had a very fast birth for a FTM and arrived at the hospital when I was already 10cm and my anesthesiologist literally came running in and was still able to administer an epidural. They basically just rolled me over on my side and got it in. I was so thankful because it immediately calmed me down as the contraction pain subsided. I had my daughter like 20 minutes later. 🤭 Then while holding my daughter I experienced what you mention at the beginning. My blood pressure plummeted and I felt super dizzy. They got it taken care of right away and I almost immediately felt better. To this day I never knew what caused it but I bet it was the epidural. It is good to know! All trust I had in gynecologists went out the door when I was gaslit for having pain during an iud. Lots of anxiety about child birth now
It pisses me off when I hear women have such horrible shitty insensitive doctors and experiences. We are treated like shet in the medical world! I’ve heard IUDs hurt soooo bad!!

@@Grogu01 I hate all forms of birth control, personally. I'm pregnant with my 3rd. Had all 3 back-to-back. My first is 2, my 2nd 1, my 3rd will be born September. Getting a tubal after this baby is born, because I'm done. Sure, it's a lot of work, but I'm glad I never went routes like getting an IUD. I tried birth control pills once and it made me feel terrible. Never took it again. My friend had an IUD and had such excruciating period pains, she thought she had endometriosis. Just turns out the IUD moved around and was hurting her. To me, that sounded absolutely awful, and I never wanted to go through that.
Im having problems still with my back 2 1/2 years later because when i was giving birth for my 4th time ( 4th epidural) i had a inexperienced person doing my epidural and she dug in my back for over 10 minutes and tore the disc in my back.Then i had to have a more experienced anesthesiologist reinsert the needle and got it almost right awak , this is all while having contractions. Now all I want is for my back to stop hurting and the sad part is is that the epidurals really didn't help me while in labor . 😢

This happened to me too! First kid I had the epidural went smoothly I had no pain but the second kid I had i felt the needle in me after numbing and then she had to retry the process again and my back is hurting currently till this day it’s been 4 weeks since

Very helpful video to watch when I start a family someday. Fun Fact: epidurals are not just for pain management while your in labor,they also are used to manage pain after a major surgery like an organ transplant, amputation, and even surgery that replaces or repairs bones like knee hip replacements or broken arms and legs. When I was a teenager a friend's 6 year old sister had a bone surgery that purposely broke both her legs and fix them because she was adopted from Africa where they believe in crazy things like breaking bones to heal someone of sickness and her legs never healed right leaving her in lots of pain to walk before the surgery and she got an epidural to help with the pain post surgery. Later her legs continued to hurt and it left her with a limp when she walked and it turns out she was actually born with a type of dwarfism and needs surgery on her legs every 5-7 years until she is an adult to continue to straighten them and replace the pins and rods that help straighten her legs. She just turned 15 recently and had another surgery when she was 12.

I used to be a paediatric nurse on a surgical ward, and yes, we used epidurals for a LOT of different surgeries! I've also had one myself for hip surgeries as a child. I'm not afraid of them at all, and I'm glad they're an option. I do hope I'll get through my second labour without one, however I had to be induced my first time and I deeply regret not getting one then, because even four years later I don't like thinking about my first labour and how horrifically painful it was. I'm open to it a lot more this time.
I didn't have a good epidural delivered. After administering my epidural, i couldn't move my legs. The nurse had to help me move or turn. My blood pressure continued going down and the babies heart rate was scary down to 70bpm. I was 9cm dilated but baby wouldn't come out. They told me i have to get an emergency c-section otherwise baby wont make it due to his heart rate. They some how couldn't control my blood pressure and baby's heart rate. I think had a bad anesthesiologist who did a bad job.
PSA: if you feel dizzy, nauseous, and like you’re gonna pass out, IT IS NOT NORMAL, your blood pressure dropped too much from the epidural. With my first I just thought that was normal and didn’t say anything. I also literally could not feel anything, no pressure, nothing. Too weird…which I guess some would like that?
Told the nurses about this experience with my second and they didn’t really give me a “strong epidural” so I felt half of the pain 😅…plus fluid accumulation occurred in my lower legs because they pumped me with so many fluids.

My next question would be - how to deal with the provider on this matter in case you have no doubts about getting epidural in general, but about the doctor who's performing the procedure? (saw a comment below about an unexperienced doctor who caused injury😶). What are the significant signs that smth is going wrong during or after the procedure and I should stop them and/or ask for another doctor (maybe it's taking too long or doctor tried more than X times, only one side got frozen etc)?
I just had my 4th and final C-section 2 weeks ago so I’ve had 1 epidural and 3 spinals I was kinda freaked out the first time as everyone says it hurts but honestly I only felt a tiny prick..definitely not as bad as it seems if you are an over thinker like myself your just honestly working yourself up for nothing

You can walk (with assistence) when you have an epidural. In Germany they vary the dose, you don‘t have to be completely numb.

It makes more sense now after having one. Everything was green before. I wanted to go all natural but if I knew the epidural felt the way it did, I wouldn't have tried to be a hero with that too much pain because they saw that I couldn't bare the pain anymore and decided and suggested I take an epidural even when I resented it in the first place. Worsed part o had it while having a contraction, something I don't look forward to doing on my next births.
I can still feel the pain of epidural after 10 years . First epidural turned my normal delivery into c section and second one was very weird I can still imagine and feel the discomfort

i had an epidural with my 1st and second. It was a best decision ever. I was relaxed,dont feel the contraction. I was just layin down and sleep and wake up its time to push. Im currently pregnant 31 weeks my baby is breech but if ever she will turn i will definetely have a epidural.

I had two babies, each one was only 1 day over due date. I also have Ankylosing Spondylitis and was concerned about my spine, so I declined the epidural. First baby was an easy birth with minimal IV pain meds, the second one I should probably have had the epidural, since he was seconds from being an emergency C-Section when his head got stuck in the birth canal, but he was also delivered naturally. He was 9 lbs 13 oz! Then when he was 6 weeks old, I got a tubal ligation.
How was the tubal for you? I had my first two natural, but after my 2nd I was diagnosed with pelvic organ prolapse. All the pushing did a number on my organs. Got pregnant again and this is my last. Plan to get the tubal. I'm more nervous for an epidural this time though, as the pain was so intense with my 2nd.
I get induced tomorrow, maybe Tuesday. I’m ready for whatever outcome with this epidural. This is my first baby, and I want to enjoy it. I don’t wanna be in so much pain I can’t even engage with my newborn properly. Also I’ve have bad pelvic griddle, and sciatica from this pregnancy (burning sensation in your bones) so yeah I’m definitely gonna need medication to help me with that as well.

@@literally1435 HEY!!! yes I had my baby on the 23rd! He was supposed to be here on the 22nd however it took forever to dilate, and for him to come down more into the pelvic area. The induction started with a vaginal pill to ripen my cervix, then they checked me later on and I was 0.5cm (so not much) and 8 hours had went by lol, then they came in and gave me a foley bulb, (yes you will have medication with it, just request it just in case) I was given fentanyl (not the street kind lol) it helped by making me feel drunk, or I guess high lol so I knew they were placing it, I just couldn’t feel it too much because I was dazed/relaxed🥴. The bulb made my water break!! (Still wasn’t in active labor) because I was only at 5 cm because of the bulb/ballon. Then after that I asked for my epidural! Because the contractions hurt! But if you breathe with them girl! You will feel like a champ, because you can do it! They are going to feel hard and strong because you’re at 5cm ! (You may be more) so remember once that water breaks it’s time to breathe! Because yoy have to wait for the anesthesiologist
To come to your room could take 45 mins mine took about 20 but if you breathe and communicate with someone in the room it goes by fast! (Yes you can talk through contractions! I did) it’s just hard because you’re in pain, but you can! Just breathe and talk breathe and talk. NOW ONTO THE EPIDURAL. The needle didn’t hurt me (I have tattoos so needless don’t faze me honestly) (pain level 3) but what did feel weird was the pressure (pain level 5) but once it’s in !!! Time for medication! Cold sensation down your back which is normal, and then boom it’s starting to work! The worst part of the epidural is the TAPE! lol they have to tape it to your back girlfriend! So when it’s time to Remove it ! It hurts (free back wax) literally!😂
Anyways don’t be afraid to use that epidural button, or ask for booster because they made need to give you something heavier. (I needed something heavier) mine failed on one side because of nerve damage during pregnancy…then the heavier medicine failed on one side, then the anesthesiologist just came in, and changed the machine to give me more doses of the epidural at a time… that helped once I got too 9 cm I gave myself more medication using the button, because I knew it was close to pushing time. (My hospital allows you to get a epidural at anytime, you could get it during your pushing, however get it before!!) now my epidural was numb perfectly, waist down I felt nothing, legs felt heavy they had to help me position them bc you won’t be able to move them as much or at all (that’s normal, it means it’s working) the contraction I still felt in my stomach! (Pain level 5.5/ 6) not too bad honestly but if it hurts, fight through them because you need to know when to push when your feel your stomach rise and hit the highest peak on the monitor (push) 3 pushes per contraction. Push hard (with your bottom) so just imagine you’re popping. They told me it could take first time moms to push 1-3 hours…I did it in less then 20 mins, (13 mins 9 pushes) I did tear, but you can’t feel anything down below.., I didn’t even feel pressure. All I felt was me pushing myself.. remember once your water break you may get a fever, which will make babies heart rate rise! But stay calm, pray, breathe because that was my worry, I wanted to give up and get a c-sections because I was like nooo my baby is distressed but he wasn’t… lol I was just worrying too much which is okay to be cautious..it’s your body do what you feel is safe. I had no choice because my nurses and dr was like no you’re gonna push ! You can do it, and I was like ugh! Fine let’s go! I had no real reason for a c-section, I was just scared and kind of in pain because of my epidural failed but like I said before I pushed the button again before pushing officially… so now it’s 5am I’m 10 cm I start pushing, I’m paying attention to my stomach, and pushing with the contractions (remember allow them to build up first, then push) request for coaching (someone to tell you when too push ) that helps, use the mirror I used it in the beginning to see the hair then I stopped because I was focusing on pushing hard! Now! Once you’ve finished time to deliver the placenta which also did not hurt me because I was so numb below the doctor just pushed on my stomach gently, and the placenta slid out, Back to tearing. I tore 1st degree. Aftercare at home, sitting, and peeing, and walking may hurt… I’m still kinda in pain but I’m good ☺️remember cold pack reduces swelling, heat promotes healing ❤️🩹. Heat packs (sit on them) wear your pad with tucks wipes and underwear then sit on the heat pack ( thank me later) lol it feels amazing, and helps so much. After labor, they are going to make you pee if you can’t pee don’t worry just make sure that you do pee within the day because sometimes when you don’t pee after birth uterus will be to one side of your stomach and that’s not good, so just make sure that you drink lots of water and pee once they have taken the catheter out because you will have to have a catheter that will drain the Pee for you, because when you have that epidural, you can’t get up out of bed. So sidenote to help you dilate more while in bed, you can ask for peanut ball and to change positions in bed. But anyways, once the catheters out, you will continue to pee and they will come in every 15 minutes and press on your abdomen to feel for your uterus. Some people say that it hurts it was just slightly uncomfortable for me. The pain was more so discomfort (pain level 4) lol sorry about this detailed description. I just know this is going to be much needed information for first time Moms because I had a birth plan however once I got there everything on my birth plan changed everything I said I didn’t want. I ended up getting for example, like Pitocin that honestly wasn’t that bad My baby took the medication well and so did I however, in the case, the baby does not take the medication well they will shut off the machine, then start over again. Now for my hospital, they only give you three times. so if they have to shut off the machine three times…they will move to C-section (MAKE SURE YOU TELL THEM IN CASE THE INDUCTION DOES NOT GO AS PLANNED HAVE THE C-section AS A BACK UP PLAN) because if it’s an emergency, and they can’t numb you again in time, or you can’t use your same epidural because it wore off or something.. they will put you under general anesthesia (put you to sleep) and that’s a NO ! For me I was like no way lol I need to be alert ! So I made sure if all fails take me to the OR! Give me a spinal first before you just put me to sleep- however that may be different for your hospital. Oh they will recommend to eat before induction! So eat your heart out! Because once you get to the hospital, you cannot eat so if you are in labor for several days you will only be able to drink water, ice chips, drink broth, popsicle juice, and that itself is very hard because you have a baby that is inside you who is hungry and making you hungry but all you can eat is a popsicle or jello. Ohhh but once it’s over girl! EAT EAT EAT! lol
So to sum it all up! My experience was crazy, a good crazy! Wasn’t all that bad once you started pushing, it’s time to party 🎉 literally I was smiling while pushing because it’s exciting. I would do it again the same way! Kudos to the mommies that do it unmediated! But this mommy is gonna ask for some medication! 😂 just because there are risk doesn’t mean that they are going to happen. Even unmediated births have risk so don’t be ashamed to get medicine! I am currently 32 weeks pregnant with my first baby and I’m terrified for labour and delivery. How soon during labour can the epidural be given?
With my first, i wasnt able to get an epidural for a very long time, due to space and not having a room. It was awful. I was so tired from being up all night in pain, that when i finally got an epidural i fell asleep only to be woken up to "its time to push" and i was so tired i honeslty felt like i missed everything. I was in a daze. I got an epidural almost as soon as I was admitted with my second. I wasn't playing around. And the experience was 100 times more enjoyable.
I knew I wanted an epidural when I was getting induced at the end of May. My blood pressure was high so I ended up having to get the epidural sooner than I asked. But as soon as I had it I ended up passing out and sleeping until the morning.
My cousin is a nurse, and she believes that my epidural may have caused my baby to lose oxygen to his brain at some point, which resulted in him having seizures. I’ve also never had any side effects from medicines in my entire 20 years of life at the time. (I’m 27 now).
That could be true both my kids used to have seizures till age 6

I endured endless and very painful births…I was then too exhausted to keep up and was then when I asked for it. I only felt the pinch, the Dosis was low and still could feel the contractions, after struggling for a while we had emergency… I was fading away and so was my baby, our hearts rates and oxygen where in bad shape. For a C section was too late, so they pushed and vacuumed at the same time. I felt already like I was flying away of the room and could hear all voices far away even though they were screaming (husband was there too). But I’m still glad I was a bit released from pain because before I felt Like dying too. Child birth depends a lot of our anatomies as well, and the size of our partners I think. I’m small and my husband big:(.

My skin was frozen but I felt the needle in my back and jumped involuntarily. The Anesthesiologist yelled at me. Appropriate but no one warned me I would feel it deep inside my back.
That’s awful, maybe they didn’t administer enough lidocaine, I’ve had two and only felt the pain from the initial numbing needle & medication

She says you can't get up with an epidural but I've heard so many women tell me they had one where they could still walk around. Is it just an American thing where they keep you down for fear you'll fall over and sue them?

@@mamanursetina I had to get something like an epidural when I got a cerclage stitch put in, the worst part for me was the guy digging his thumb into my spine to find the right spot to stick the needle. I did make a couple tiny flinch motions when he stuck me with the needle, but I tried really hard not to.

What would be the numbers considered for low blood pressure when you're going to have an epidural ? Like *actual* low blood pressure or in the low end of normal range ?
So the number matters but also what matters is what your baseline blood pressure was before the epidural and how you’re feeling. If your blood pressure was 145/90 and you get an epidural and it drops to 105/70 you’ll probably feel crappy with that. But if you’re normally low you might not with a bit of a low pressure if that makes sense. Also if you’re symptomatic with the numbers - light headed, dizzy, nauseated…

My baseline is in the 100/80 but to be fair I did get quite scared about the whole spinal tap thing so I'm really reconsidering an epidural 😆 had a lumbar puncture done because of meningitis and the memory of that thing stayed with me for two decades 🤣 I guess I'll see when the moment arrives !! @@overseal40my baseline is also around 100/80 and my epidural caused a bp drop. More accurately, it tanked. I almost lost consciousness and they were giving me so much fluids to try to get it back up that it ended up causing another problem that I won't get into. They were never able to get it to come back to normal so my dr insisted on a c-section. Im pregnant again and I will NOT be getting another epidural.
Also, ive had a spinal leak. (From another spine surgery). Calling it a headache is like calling a severed limb a boo boo. It's indescribable how horrible it is, and mine took over a week to replenish too. Even laying flat it absolutely impossible because the ONLY relief from the pain is being inverted. The only treatment is a blood patch, when they draw fresh blood and inject it into your spinal column. Which they have to do FOUR times. I've had some horrible procedures done and dealt with a great deal of pain from my condition. But that leak was the worst thing I've ever experienced.
I dread getting epidurals.
They arent mandatory so make sure you know the risks and benefits! THen make the decision :)

What do you do when someone starts to have breathing issues after the epidural is in their system?
You can slow down the epidural, sit you up a bit higher so the level comes down quicker and just standby and offer reassurance and reminders to take those breaths ♥️ it usually passes fairly quickly

Epidurals have fentanyl now, even morphine, it crosses the placenta. If you can’t have a shot of alcohol during birth you shouldn’t have pain killers.

With my last son they told me it was too late. I don’t believe this. They also gave me pitocin and lied to me and said it was “fluids” for dehydration. I did not like my nurse, she was really rude. And only my husband remembers seeing the Dr, for a second.
With my first, I had an epidural and couldn’t feel anything, not even any pressure. They had to call the anesthesiologist to turn down the dosage. He was not happy lol
My 1st birth, the epidural was too much. I couldn't even feel to push. It made delivery much worse. 2nd delivery was induction due to IUGR, they had to stick me 3 times before they got it right. Babies 3-6 were natural births. I can't go back and I'm terrified of a C-section because of this alone.

Im pretty anxious because I have a bit of a problem where pain meds don’t seem to work very effectively for me. I’ve never had anything that includes opioids so maybe that will help but yeah when I’ve had to get local injections of like lidocaine and stuff for things like a root canal, they pumped me full of the stuff and it still did nothing. SO anxious that the epidural is going to fail which will be hell because I’m being induced
Definitely explore your options with your provider. My midwife and I agreed we'll start with nitrous oxide and step up as needed, but there are options in between that and epidural. The midwife said typically fentanyl as a standalone tool is a go-to, but I've also heard of people using a TENS machine (I hadn't thought to ask my midwife about that). I think at the very least, though, making sure nitrous oxide is readily available would be something to ask about if you haven't already. (And where I live, in early labor they will give morphine, but they can't use it later in labor for reasons that I can't remember right now. 🥴) Opioids certainly don't work for everyone and they can have some nasty side effects, but to my understanding they seem to work well for most people.
A friend of mine was expecting her 4th child, and decided to try a drug-free delivery. She did it, but regretted it because she was in so much pain that she couldn’t enjoy her newborn’s first few moments as much as the previous 3 births. When she had her 5th child, she was back on the epidural train.

I’m kind of scared of the epidural, but I know how common it is. My baby is coming in February and I know it’s going to be a great for our family, yet difficult day for my body. I’m just afraid all around of the birth which is probably not good 😢

So it could allow you to push baby out more controlled because not as much of the pain of crowning will be there but that said lots of people without epidurals are able to guide baby out quite well so its pretty independant
You know what's crazy about 3:24 ? The hospital near where i live tells people there are NO risks and NO long term side effects of the epidural. I've never believed this, mostly because I've met so many women who have told me about how their backs have never recovered or been the same since the epidural. Sure, lots of moms who never notice any difference, but definitely more than a few that have had permanent pain or limited mobility from the damage the epidural caused.
And now that I think about it, the other hospitals that I've been to have all openly talked about the risks of having an epidural and talk about it no differently than the risks that come along with every other procedure, yet this hospital chooses to deny it or talk about it at all 🤔 weird 🤷♀️

@@ericaeli3807 THis is true. Sometimes people have to wait if the person providing someone else care. The site I am at we are lucky...during the day we have one doctor for c-sections and one for the patients in labor!

I dont know if you have a video on childbirth with no epidural but does the catheter get put in as well or is that only for the epidural?
I do have an unmediated birth video but its more on different things you can try. No need to have a catheter put in if you are able to get to the bathroom and pee!

I feel like epidurals made me feel really loopy. I’ve had two. I am on my fifth pregnancy and feel like I have nothing to prove and just need to go with what I desire. I appreciated not having the pain but I couldn’t focus and didn’t feel present with the epidurals I had. Were they too strong?? Or just my body’s reaction??? I’m trying to decide whether I want one again or not because I don’t like the out of it feeling I’ve had.
Oh that’s interesting. It shouldn’t they don’t have a systemic effect because it’s not going into your blood stream line opioid medications would 🤔 but…your experience is uniquely yours and if you felt a certain type of way then that’s how it be 😊 why don’t you see how it goes and make a decision based on how it feels then and there? 5th birth could go pretty quick so you might be able to cope without!

Random: Do you have any experience delivering patients with pelvic organ prolapse?? I have a cystocele and rectocele and am concerned about trying to push with those. I’m thinking the best method may be to just let my body do as much of the work as possible. Last time I did that my second son pretty much delivered himself. I didn’t push at all, just labored at home through the night until my water broke and by the time I got to the hospital and sat down he popped out lol. Just wondering if you have any thoughts because it is a topic rarely discussed and even harder to find info on.

Currently prego with #6 i had the epidural with all of them butttt the last one was such a horrible experience and he did a horrible job , i told my doc at my last appointment and she said if i get the same guy just ask him to be more gentle but i would rather ask for a different one or try to do it without it ..idk im super nervous now

I had my latest son without pain medication. My first son i had with an epidural. Something i remember (which really freaked me out) was full body shakes after i received the epidural. Is that also a side effect or something that happens often for women? It was a wild feeling.

I've heard from other women who went through childbirth that its a lot of adrenaline. The more I learn about pregnancy and childbirth the more worried I am about it😅

Im pregnant for the first time, and im sooooo scared. I thought epidural is amazing and i was like i would do that for sure. But now im not sure, and im someone who doesn't tolerate the pain that much. Just period pain kills me and I take the pills right away 😭
I was fighting with myself for 4 days in labour not to get an epidural. I was exhausted from pain and no sleep. Nurse convinced me to get it and I could finally relax a bit. Few hours later my baby finally made her way out. Birth without a pain. In 2 months another one comes I hope it won't be as long but I will sign the paperwork straight away for an epidural, not exhaust myself in pain. Remember not to move, can nurse or your Man help to hold your position, speak if you'll feel contraction coming and if you will feel any pain or pressure in your back after its 'installed' say it. I was still feeling pain in my right side and they readjust and I stopped crying my eyes out. Remember to agree on in/out catheter, they evacuate all urine and take it out.
