  • Well, you seemed pretty favourable to the idea of my doing tier videos so I thought I'd start pretty basic with one on soaps. I will be making more of these.

As you mentioned, Brookie incest storyline was revealed during a conversation with their parents - no dramatic stunts like EE would do (as you said, doing it in the Vic). That’s what I loved about it - it didn’t always do things for a gimmick and a stunt. They would actually show people revealing their secrets in a muted way.

The Jordache story line in brookie was so hard hitting for me, as a girl S A'd in childhool stuggling with her sexuality, Beth was such an icon.

Love this channel, currently watching the reruns of Brookside. If you can look at what you think caused the downfall, that’d be great

Brookside is the best soap of all time. In many ways, it’s the blueprint - all the other soaps copied it. Brookie was never afraid to push the boundaries and during the 90s, it was unmissable - very realistic.

A personal countdown of your favourite soap storylines would be excellent 👌

    Emmerdale fan here!
Personally, I think looking at the families in Emmerdale is so fascinating, particularly the Kings & the Dingles. Those are two of my favourite soap families of all time!
I have a whole series on my channel where I timeline the events of Emmerdale from its conception to present day so if you’re looking for stuff to do with the soap, I think there would be a good place to start looking!
    Awesome video dude! 👍🏻

Agreed ref Brookside. They did let it die...I do remember the Imelda death storyline with Anthony. I also remember the incest storyline and would like it to be talked about.

Eldorado please. The turnaround in the show is remarkable, and you can actually pinpoint the moment the change commences, but how on earth was it allowed to go out in that state at the beginning?

A video about how soaps end and how the big current soaps could end as they inevitably will would be good

It would be interesting to see you doing a video on regional soaps, I' m sure lots of old episodes are uploaded. Or how about the change in tone of soaps in the nineties and noughties - a sort of before and after. Brookside went right downhill in the later nineties, it became too salacious and crime focussed. Like all of the soaps it changed in the nineties from being character driven to being way too focussed on big headline grabbing storylines.

A Hollyoaks storyline that would make a good video is Silas the serial killer, played by Jeff Rawle. Long-running and absolute camp, like Hollyoaks in general.

Honestly.. for a brief period in the mid-to-late 2000s, _Hollyoaks_ was an A-tier show, IMO. Maybe EVEN S-tier. It absolutely captured the zeitgeist.
      Loved this vid!

Ray Quinn played Anthony. Sorry lol. Mixed up the character and the actor but he’d go on to X Factor and Dancing on Ice

Emmerdale is interesting in that it is basically a different show to before. It even has a different name.
For the first decade or so, it wasn't a soap in the typical sense. It was focused on a small set of characters at Emmerdale Farm in the village of Beckindale.
It wasn't until the mid to late 80s when characters nor associated with the farm, became regulars.
Then in 1989, they dropped Farm from the Title and introduced the Tates.
Then in 93, they introduced some more families, and the plans crash kind of integrated them with the cast more in the aftermath.
They then used the aftermath to change the villages name to Emmerdale. Since Emmerdale was now one Farm, in a show that focused on the village, this made the shows title make more sense.
The original Emmerdale Farm actually left the show in 93,n but there were two more farms that were also called Emmerdale until 2002. So Emmerdale Farm isn't part of the show anymore.
Emmerdale has basically nothing of its original format left in it. It's a different show completely. It didn't help that a lot of the mainstay actors left in the early 90s.
It wasn't an overnight transition, it took about a full decade (late 80s to early 90s) for it to change fully. Although even watching an episode from 1989 to 1994 is like night and day.
A bonus fact is that Emmerdale is the only TV show that I'm aware of, where the meaning behind the shows title has changed completely.

I'd honestly like to hear your take on Casualty, it was actually the first British "Soap" (As a Canadian, it's not a soap, the production values are too high!) I started to watch.
I started watching it during my first bingethrough of ER a few years ago, looking for a good companion show that was still airing, little did I know that the ER pilot script was probably dusted off by Michael Crichton due to the success of Casualty from 86-93.

think you may be wrong about actors sacked for trade union reasons all actors are in equity who sort out pay levels etc but who knows for real
