Thank you so much Jon for an incredible list of Shaving soaps!! Thanks for the time and research needed to make a wonderful ranking of bases. I know I truly appreciate it. I'm surprised how much I agree with your list! Thanks again.
Hey Jon, just wanted to say thanks for including me in the ranking. That’s a pretty great list of artisans, and being among some of those names is awesome.
Although I haven't used any shaving soaps yet, but I was surprised too PAA not in the S category. Looking at its ingredients especially with all those exotic Ck6 butters made me kinda feel like this was it! Going off ur list, I think I may reverse my decision and probably start off with A and E. Also just watched ur Henson video, and was stoked to see the prospect of Al13 aggressive plate, and the new blades that are on their way!
Wasn't PAA known for scamming people by lying about the order of ingredients they put in their products? They changed names a few times but they were pretending as if the better ingredients were the most prominent in their products by naming them first but turns out there was barely anything at all. I haven't followed up and stopped even looking at their products once I saw all the multiple controversies they were part of but hopefully they got more honest since then!?
@@baldbearded9601 I know this is a bit old, and I’m not personally sure of exactly what happened some time back with PAA, but if mis-ordering the ingredients is your concern be aware that this is normal in soap making as to protect base formulas. I’ve had a few email conversations with Douglas, and have seen him do tons for the community, and have to say the guy is rad and you’re definitely missing out by overlooking Phoenix’s products. Just my opinion obviously. Cheers and have a good one!
Thanks Enrique, we had talked about doing this in the podcast since 2019 so…better late than never 😂 I kept this one real quick but I will follow up doing a deeper dive as I just wanted to get this idea out there!
Well done on great idea to have a list focussed on performance - so many only discuss fragrance which is important too, but highly subjective. I recently bought A&E (Undersea) as an alternative to MdC (Vetiver) and agree with your ranking. I’ve always been surprised at the average performance of some well known brands. They all rank lower on your list; good but not great imo.
Thanks Ronnie! I’m personally not a big fan of tag videos (specifically forcing another content creator to do something 😂), but I would love to see other channels share theirs! I already saw Jack from The Virtual Groom Room’s list, hoping more will come!
Thanks for making the video. Really cool tool. If I wanted to use your template, how do I add more soap brands, or do you need too add them? Best regards from a technological analphabet.
Thanks Johan, I’d love to see your list! While anyone can make a list, I need to be the one to add additional brands. Shoot me a message on Facebook or Instagram let me know which ones, you are much more knowledgeable on the European offerings and I’d like to cover those as well!
Nice list. I really like how you organized it. A couple of surprises, but I would have a similar list based on soaps I use. Have you tried any of the Crowne and Crane soaps?
Like this list you have. Love A&E and the others on your S tier, but haven’t tried Zingari yet. The others in my small stash are about where I’d see as well. I wished that the Martin de Candre’s Fougere’s base was as great as the scent but still a B tier is well deserved
In my opinion barrister&mann Omnibus is better than A&E, I also don’t purchase from A&E anyways due to their customer service and blocking you from their Instagram unless you kiss their feet. I was an avid purchaser! I commented on a post saying their shave butters scents have a common scent profile to each other, and they blocked me completely from their Instagram 🤣 Have you tried Lothur v2 base? I heard it could be a top performer? Wonder if your ranking is based off the old base, new one is said to be denser. I heard it to be even better than omnibus? Excited to try
Sorry to hear about your experience with A&E. Omnibus is on the way to me and I have tried Lothur V2. With the Lothur base, I wanted some more time with the base before settling on it's place, but it really is on the verge of being in the S tier for me!
I’ve had a few trial runs with lothur, it’s a good soap, but I wouldn’t put it above barrister or DG. I think your list is pretty much spot on, barrister and DG definitely in top 3.
I would put those in the B or C tiers. I'll do a deeper dive into my choices for each tier, I just wanted to get this first video out there to get things rolling and to share the Tier Maker so other people could play with it.
Is this a good starting place for unscented soap or cream? Some have no sense of smell, allergic to fragrance, avoid other product conflict or befuddled with quantity of products? It's almost a contest to accumulate what can't be consumed. This leaves product to spoil or not perform as intended. Collecting at these costs may cause reluctance gifting, selling or discarding. Owning feels good. Presenters intend to review new products without bias. We compliment artisans for their creative effort and reward them with praise. Commercial or kitchen creators bring us options making this time the best. Slickest whisker removal is my only intent. Smells, lathering, appearance, packaging don't matter. Thanks if you care to help me choose better.
Hey Finn, I think this list would be helpful if you're going to go Unscented, however one factor that isn't talked about here is the presence of the soap base smell itself. No soap is truly totally unscented, and some soaps have a stronger base scent on account of the ingredients used. Also keep in mind that not every soap maker necessarily offers an unscented option.
Good list and idea…surprised that you wanted to throw yourself into a discussion that would certainly be filled with raw emotional outrage! 😂 should have put Arko on S just to incite Blou!!!😂
I'm shocked PAA is not at the top or at least "A" tier, their CK6 base is my measuring stick. For me it performs better than A&E Kaizen and maybe even slightly better than Kaizen 2... I'm going to have to check out Zingari Man, Murphy & McNeill, and Barrister and Mann. Those are all highly praised by many whose opinions I respect, I just have to kill off at least two tubs before I can justify buying more soap. Artisan makers have come a long way in the last ten years. I find the protection and post shave feel of the better ones easily outperform MdC, Castle Forbes, etc.
B&M, Stirling and PAA CK6 are my top3 bases. For me, A&E Kaizen 2E is the most overrated base. The lather is thin and can only hold very little water before breaks.
I’ll get more into in my next video, but Løthur is on the cusp of S for me, I just feel I need to get some more shaves with it before I pull the trigger.
Did Southern Witchcrafts dirty. I consistently find their base the slickest of all I've tried!
Nice list Jon. I always find people’s lists very interesting. This list made me realize there are still a few I have yet to try. Well done!
Thanks Shady!

In truth I will use it as a reference for buying soaps.
Not a bad idea ;) Glad you enjoyed the video Keith!
Hey Jon, just wanted to say thanks for including me in the ranking. That’s a pretty great list of artisans, and being among some of those names is awesome.
My pleasure Chad, keep up the great work ;)
What's between Lothur and Noble Otter? This is an interesting exercise and I imagine hard to divorce the scent and packaging from the ratings.
That’s MacDuffs, I may need to find a better icon for them!
@@Latherhog Thanks.

I would like to see 345 Soap Co., HCC, & Heritage Hill in future tier lists. Great job!
Also Crowne & Crane
Thanks Todd, lots of requests for 345 so that’ll be coming up soon!
Thank you so much Jon. We’re honored to be listed among such great brands. Very much appreciated
Keep up with the great products Peter 🍻
As I’ve commented above, you guys deserve your place on the top. Well done!👍
Is Fine Accoutrements ranking regarding their classic tallow pucks or their new croap?
My ranking is based off of their classic tallow pucks
Great video. I have yet to see a shaving channel publish a shave soap tier. A deep dive on why you placed soaps in their tiers would be nice.

Thanks Dave, I’ve heard of Crowne and Crane but haven’t used them personally. However, I can certainly add a spot for them!
I was curious about Murphy and McNeil and saw you ranked them top tier so I just ordered Infinitus Kodiak Irish Cream soap and splash.
Hope it’s a winner for you, Vincent!
I didn't see MacDuffs on there, but I'm positive I've seen you use it. Where would you rank their base?
MacDuffs is in the A class between Løthur and Noble Otter, I’ll plan to make a more recognizable icon
@@Latherhog Ah okay, I couldn't see it that well on my phone.

Oh man, Tier List of individual scents would be way too hard, however Vespers is easily in my Top 5!
Nice job, Jon 👍 Have you tried any Grooming Dept bases? I love the Mallard base.
Thanks Brandon! I used the Mallard base when it first came out and wanted to use it again before ranking it, so that’ll happen real soon.
