Driving a Welded Diff on the Street. Is it Really that Bad?

  • Today I decided to try out a welded differential firsthand and see if it was the right direction for #ProjectEthel. Now before you guys run out and weld up your A to B, just know the car I welded up gets driven about twice a month. It's not a car I depend on and I would never attempt to daily drive a car with a welded diff. I would describe the welded up differential on the street as tolerable at best. Thanks for watching!

Great testing man! Some people love it some people hate it, but the monte carlo was a good example to make of welding vs not welding a differential !

I used to daily a welded diff at least 100 miles a day, never had an issue. It was a blast in the wet.

I have just binge watched the last 5 months of this channel. I love it, well presented, this project Ethel is very different, very interesting. That part where you dremeled the pistons only to learn you had the keyway misaligned on the timing chain, Im pleased you showed it, we all make mistakes, I certainly would have made the same mistake, its how we learn, even from others. A few years ago, I was working on the engine wiring loom for a Range Rover, we had just done some soldering to tie a new ecu into the loom to run duel fuel LPG. I was told to bind and tape the loom back into the conduit but i didnt indivually insulate the solder joints. Dont know what i was thinking, if i ever was. Never crossed my mind. Anyway I reconnected the battery and the ignition key was turned to test, Plumes of blue smoke engulfed the engine bay. That was a stupid mistake, just plain dumb if im honest with myself. On another note, these chain drive Cadillac gearboxes, i thought it was joke at first when i first heard about it, pretty unique. Subbed

Years ago I temp wired a stereo amp up straight to the battery to test it out. I ran the big power wire through the jam. Everything was fine till I closed the door and the hinge clamped on the wire and let the smoke out. We've all learned those lessons. Glad to have you with us. Thanks for the sub! By the way how long did it take to watch all the videos? That's impressive!

Funny this video shows up considering i just installed a mini spool in my s10 TODAY. By the way i instantly regret it. Its hell on tires whether or not your on the gas. Tires squeal and leave black marks when you turn. I knew what i was signing up for but i didnt think it was going to be this bad.

Great video.. I like the rear engine Vega job you are doing.Sounds very challenging..I have a 68 Chevelle 10 bolt rear end .Is it different to swap a mini spool in it compared to a 10 bolt truck rear end?

    • @dickysgarage7120

It all depends on the rear end. If they are both open carriers it would be the exact same.

Great video,I am not a master mechanic, but my friend and I are slowly working on a 1966 barracuda it is in St Pete, also working on my 83 Trans am and my friend has a v w thing and my 06 300 c SRT8 is out of commission sitting in my garage. Lots of things going on very little time. Who knows maybe if you have the time stop by and see the rusty cuda it was sitting for 15 years we are getting very close to starting the engine.

So some time this year the 300 c should be back on the road, the 6.1 hemi sounds so cool and performs well.I forgot to answer your question, the problem was a wiped lobe on number six was wiped and also the lifter.

@@dickysgarage7120 since you opened it up, you think it's feasible to swap Axle flange to the other side? I've wanted to do a differential flip for a mid engine project. I think each side is different size holes. Reverse rotation is the goal.

I have no idea. The left and right axles do have different seals but is that really the biggest issue? The ring and pinion would be working in reverse.

Welded or mini spooled is fine for what you just did, after driving my s10 daily with a mini spool in Traffic in light rain is a problem ,maybe your not Making enough power for it to be a problem, mine would walk all over the place, the real danger is long sweeping right or lefts at freeway speeds...quite literally neither rear tire has full traction in that scenario.
