Luckily you can pick up a re-manufactured replacement machined to have tighter tolerances thus making them last longer. As an added bonus they are pretty cheap to replace and do not take a whole lot of time or special tools.

    Nice job man! How’s the steering box? Still tight? Thinking of Cardone but heard a few guys say it took 2 or 3 boxes before they had a tight one. Anyway, Great content man! Engine sounds smooth after all the love you gave her. Happy with everything you did? Anything you wish you did different?

      The box is still nice and stiff! I've been overlanding for a the past few weeks and she's holding together nice. The engine is running super smooth, way more power, bottom end grunt, and low egts. Even when I lug 5th gear and get upwards to 1094 degrees, she quickly comes down to 500 or so. I don't think I'd do anything different with Pig but there are definitely things I have lined up to do thatll add to the experience, help with cooling while up in the mountains. All and all she's running really good! I'll do a quick update video on my phone and post it for ya. Thanks man 🍻

    I have an 04 Sierra, after replacing the gearbox with a Blue Top Gearbox and just about a whole front end Kryptonite rebuild my steering still feels way too loose to me. Ive been told by multiple mechanics that, that is just how these trucks are… Ive determined that the play is coming from where the steering column connects to the gearbox. Does this really not have a fix?? Its driving me nuts!

    • @KooshdaakaaGarage
      @KooshdaakaaGarage  5 місяців тому

      Ah man, yeah that's annoying. Your column is a two piece held together by a 15mm bolt I believe. Can you see or feel play in it? Seems like it could get stretched or loose if subject to lots of stress overtime. Another thing that helped tighten up my steering was installing the bilstein 5100 steering stabilizer. My gear box felt way too easy to turn when I first installed it and it honestly was a little scary to drive. The bilstein is significantly larger and provides more resistance than the oem version. Great for dirt roads and has smooth wheel recover after taking a corner.

    • @KooshdaakaaGarage
      @KooshdaakaaGarage  Рік тому +1

      Oh man that sounds like a royal pain. You might have to treat it like a ball joint and give it a little heat, give it some tension with a new puller, give it a few taps with a hammer, little more tension, little more heat, couple more wacks until it pops off. Kind of a pain given how tucked away the pitman arm is but that may be how you have to do it. Good luck!

  • @akclan33
    @akclan33 Рік тому +1

    Great video. Does taking off the pitman arm mess with the alignment or steering wheel center?

    • @KooshdaakaaGarage
      @KooshdaakaaGarage  Рік тому +1

      Thank you akclan! are you in Southeast? Just curious, I bounce between JNU & POW. Anywho, though there is potential the alignment may be off depending on the difference between make and model of your gearbox and whether or not it was made on a Tuesday or Friday, in theory it should not make much if any difference at all. So long as you find the steering center using the method I show in this video then your steering wheel should be as center as it can get providing your tie rod alignment is also good. All of that said, if your alignment is already straight as an arrow, and you follow the techniques I show in this video then your steering should either be the same or better than it was when you started. Hope this helps, and best of luck! 🍻

  • @jason6325

    Good video. My question is. I bought a used gear box from a salvage yard. On the shaft of the gear box it has been turned all sorts of ways. How do i know where to position it? To put the steering linkage back on.

    • @KooshdaakaaGarage
      @KooshdaakaaGarage  Рік тому +1

      Thank you! This is how I centered the gearbox: install your steering shaft onto your new unit. Rotate all the way to the right. Next you are going to rotate all the way to the left. When you rotate to the left count the rotations it takes to get all the way over to the left. Now that you have your rotation count, divide that by 2. Whatever number that comes out to will be the number of rotation back to the right you will want to go. That will be your center. For mine I think the total rotations was right around 3 which put me at 1.5 rotations to the center. Now, when you remove your old gear box it is also important to straighten out your wheels so that the pitman arm lines up with your steering. Best of luck! 🍻

    Looks like a pain in the ass. Should I just keep adding fluid? I'm worried about the spline thing. Cardone has two version around the same price that look exactly the same, and they both say they'll fit my LLY. Wondering if the difference is the splines, and how do I know which one I have?

    • @KooshdaakaaGarage
      @KooshdaakaaGarage  Рік тому

      It is a bit of pain but 100% doable. Pretty sure you'll have a 3 spline. That seems to be the case most of the time.. the PSC have a 4 spline. You'll be fine to keep the fluid topped for a bit until the seal gets worse. I ran mine like that for a few years 😬

      The samething happened to me and you know what it was?? My steering stabalizer was shot 😬 I couldn't tell before with the old gear box because the gear box was so shot it provided resistance where as the new gear box was much stronger with a tight tolerance. I swapped in the bilstein steering stabilizer and bam, problem solved. And to boot the bilstein steering stabilizer also added a faster turn recovery (wheel straightening after you make a turn). I made a install video of that too if you want to check it out. I talk about the very thing you just described 😁🍻 thank you for watching, I hope this helps!

      @karlahernandez-dr6uq ohh gotcha gotcha. mine was a reman as well. It will install exactly the same as a new one though. In the video I show you how to center it. Essentially you spin it all the way to the right, then count how many turns it takes to get all the way back to the left. Take that number and divide it by 2. Whatever that equals out to is how many turns back to the right will be center easy peasy. You got this! 🍻
