I feel like it's safe to say the 9 represent dark matter beings either for the 9 planets if Pluto counts, or more likely the 8 planets and the sun. The only real sorry with bungie being that any explanation for them being involved will be buried in lore 2 seasons after they act.
I really find it interesting that they mentioned the derelict carrying an engine of creation borderlining on the ability to reshape reality, but not to the extent of something like the veil+traveler combo, makes me wonder if they planned for the drifter to haul around something that kind of is a scuffed prototype? like how the vex tried recreating the veil with the black heart, the nine might have wanted to recreate the "final shape"

My take on the Nine is that they might be a metaphor for game devs. They know the future that we don’t. They are these beings that are above us as a player, but someone is able to become part of the Nine. Their will is not their own isn’t fully true, but a lot of balance changes and QoL changes come from community feedback. And if life is wiped out then the Nine will be as well is a way of saying that if everyone stops playing the game then the studio will more than likely go down as well. Obviously there’s a ton of in game stuff that fits really well with the Nine, but I think this is pretty interesting. (Also I have zero clue if this idea has already been said somewhere because I don’t engage in community lore discussion a whole lot outside of watching Myelin)
If the Nine represent the game devs, then it would be true that the Nine don't have their own will--their will would be the will of the Devs. Just a consideration (I also haven't been playing Destiny since Shadowkeep, so I'm a bit behind lol)
It's a cool theory, but I think with the 4th wall breaks from Savanthun, it's implied the Architects are Bungie. If you die to physics or falling off, you die to the Architects; they created the Destiny world and set its limits. It's also a throwback sort of name to Precursors like in HALO or whatever the precursors are called in Marathon. They created everything but we never see them. Maybe we'll see!
@SALEENS7GTR5 in marathon there are the yarro, as super advanced alien race that contain space gods with infinite hunger for destruction called wrrkenkackntr or something like that. But there's not really a mention of space magic, although the player themselves turns into a God by the end of the third game. Every time the space God is unleashed in the story, or you fail, you jump to a new timeline until you get it right. The ai durandal mentions something like how you are inevitable, you always show up and win, you are destiny, you are %hero. Even if you are completely destroyed, you'll be back. All of bungies games are connected. From myth to destiny.
i think only darkness users can successfully use/commune with the Veil. Gambit being part of the plan to acclimate guardians to the darkness ultimately to the point of being able to come into the contact with the Veil without brain death.
Since story of Destiny was improved based on assets/concepts along its releases and due to the Nine's lack of involvement in story, I feel Nine are on backburner in Destiny story; probably will help us out post Final Shape when likely Vex are main enemy and threat is paraversal (As mentioned in 30th anniversary that Nine have access to multiple realities...just like the Vex)

Initially I had assumed it was just detailing, but with a look back at a bunch of the material related to The Nine, I think foreshadowing makes more sense - especially when the design of Lightfall is to tell the story across the whole expansion through the seasons (even if that hasn't been received super well). The Veil was the "mystery" introduced to act at the catalyst for explaining all of the story beats - the memory of the universe a lens through which to look to perceive the story, the Traveler the power of the first instant of the big bang - infinite power, anywhere, any time.
There's a section on page 9 of the Dust lorebook that reads: "...there is far, far more dark matter in the universe than bright. They [the Nine] will find a way to make new worlds of it. They will end their dependence on life, and on the Light of Guardians, which the falling veil will soon snuff out forever..." I assume the "falling veil" is alluding to the Veil that we know of post-Lightfall. Just thought that was fascinating and wanted to mention it. Thanks for the interesting and well made video Myelin 👍
This made me go back to how the Distributary was created. We never got to really see another fight between raw light vs raw dark energy, in fact we never got to see the collapse. What if the portal has similar properties to the Singularity where the Awoken were born. Dunno if that helps answer anything, but I think it's cool to think about.

I always liked the bit back in Reckoning where the Emissary knows that the Destiny "universe" is a "game". I remember there was a line from the Emissary saying "They're (the Guardian) different, they can leave this game" and the Nine were just like "uh, whut, we do not understand", referring to us, the player, playing this game; a 4th wall break.
Dark matter is not theoretical. Its existence is undeniable, we simply don't know what it is. Watch the video "dark matter is not a theory" by "acollierastro" for all the evidence of its existence.
It’s unfortunate the amount of mysticism around concepts like dark matter. Though, it’s understandable why people tend to misunderstand it, there’s a lot of back ground info that simply isn’t talked about enough
It definitely exists. I went to a planetarium in Bradenton, FL and they talked about dark matter. It's naked to the human eye, as a result many people deny its existence.
Dark matter may not exist if our theory of gravity is wrong. A recent paper was published about this, with a focus on the Hubble constant and how we don't need dark matter to explain expansion if we adjust the gravity equations.
I'm pretty sure the "somehow life effects the nine" was explained more clearly as the gravity attracting the dark matter, and the gravity every person every tree every rock and so on, also attracts swirls of dark matter making a more complex construction of dark matter that then acts as a brain and can think and that's what makes up a member of the nine, rather than just like a 'somehow' life force kind of thing. I think it still boils down to dark matter arranged in complex enough constructs of dark matter that it can think, and the influence life has on it is the same as planets and everything on them - all due to gravity arranging the dark matter complexly.
With the latest cut scene of the Traveler emerging from a planet, I think the link to the Nine, or something from their system very much like our Nine, becomes a little clearer. Or cloudier.

Matt, I just want to point something out: Dark Matter, the way it is described in Destiny as "space dust that interacts only through gravity" is actually incredibly accurate to the real world. This "space dust" is basically neutrinos, which are a LEADING candidate for what dark matter could end up being. :)
I'd have to go back through some old transcripts - but I'm pretty sure in basic story missions when Taken were inbound, there was an increase of sterile neutrinos detected. Probably by Asher Mir? Anyway. If space dust is neutrinos, and sterile neutrinos are "hypothetical particles that are believed to interact only via gravity and not via any of the other fundamental interactions of the Standard Model" (copied description from Wikipedia), those sterile neutrinos sound a lot like what Myelin described the Nine as in the image above, essential beings born from dark matter and given life through our three-dimensional life, the gravity of the planets and the stars and the galaxies. Spitballing here: maybe there's more connection between the Taken and the Nine than we know? Obviously Xur, Agent of the Nine, his will is not his own, and the Taken are the same way, devoid of free will and solely obeying their Taken King/Queen. I think there's something there that plays into what we will see the Final Shape become.
Bungie wants to continue making stories past Final Shape. Bungie also mentioned that Lightfall is the beginning of them expanding the universe and trying to show that Light Vs Dark isn't the only thing Destiny has to offer. Not all of the Nine are on our side and they can make "counterfeit Taken". So I'm thinking the Nine are definitely a part of that future story telling.
I'm still betting on the Drifter being the twin that is mentioned in Orin's lore way back. The twin snakes. Two snakes shedding their skin to survive another day. She apparently has a tattoo that fascinated drifter. Could be one that he also has the matching tattoo that they both got before they became what they are now. It could be a snake tattoo.
Can see drifter show up at the last moment fighting a taken queen xivu arath. whipping out a gambit bank shouting get in the bank and catching xivu like a damn pokemon.
I am so glad the Nine are being talked about again. I agree with what seems the be consensus of most being that they’ll be a bigger focus during and after Final Shape.
It is because next season is about the Nine. They know a lot about the Veil and we are going to need that information. Savathûn saved Lavinia Garvia Umr Tawil after she passed through the Cocytus Gate so that she could learn of the Nine. It would not surprise me if both Mara Sov and Ikora Rey have been looking for her ever since.
In the lore its stated that 4 of the nine are evil, and the other 5 are on our side, or the other way round i dont remember, so i doubt theyre gonna be used for the final shape and then forgotten about, not to say they wont be used for the final shape, just that it wont be their last appearance.
either Season 22 or Season 23 is going to bring the Nine to the forefront of their story as part of figuring out how to travel through the portal the Witness made.
The Nine will return. We all know why. Remember back in Altar of Reflections we been asked a question "What happens to the Nine, if this solar system is destroyed?"

Agree, the aesthetic and mystery of the Nine are amazing with the multiverse stuff going on. They and the aesthetic and technological sci-fi side of Clovis/Rasputin capture my awe of the mystery of the D2 world the most. Vex are a close third with the labyrinths they create like in VoG. Cabal and Hive are cool of course, but their lore and aesthetic is more tied to royalty, Rome, and religion, which we already have so much literature about. The technological side of D2 I think is more inspiring.
@@SALEENS7GTR5 Oh totally, yeah the technology side and then also the sheer unknown about how the universe works on a metaphysical level, which can be told through the Nine. That final frontier vibe is was got me too, understanding the creation of all things that somewhat represents our reality with how Bungie does actually use science in their world (arc = electromagnetism, solar = heat/thermal energy, void = vacuum/nothingness, stasis = no energy/change/time (opposite of solar) and also control, strand = materialization from the quantum happenings of space (like quantum foam)/somethingness (opposite of void) and also chaos, etc.)
In my head, "The Nine" is just a euphemism for the writers to break the fourth wall. E.G. When Xur is like "I do not entirely control my movements", it's literally just the writers saying "you go here because we need something to be here"
Aren't there 2 factions within the 9? One that wants to keep things the way they are and one that wants to see what will happen to them if we are wiped out? This, along with the timing of the return of 9 lore makes me speculate that the factions of the 9 created the traveler and the veil to enact the plan of each side.
Meta talk about the game for a moment, whenever I hear a game or show talk about a character or set of characters that have long since been unmentioned, I feel it’s a way to bridge them back into the series. Games have done this a lot in the past, but the biggest example for me is in an old rpg I played as a kid and replayed recently as an adult. In Legend of the Dragoon, a specific character who stops showing up in the first disc makes a reappearance in the 4th, but characters began mentioning them again around the midpoint of disc 3 and on. Spoiler for TFS With Destiny 2 the same thing applies to Cayde who we started talking about again (sooner in the lore) recently with the memorial and some moments of dialog, and now we know Cayde is returning in a way in TFS. I think mentioning the IX now is an attempt to foreshadow the next saga of Destiny. If I remember right, the IX are searching for the place Mara Sov brought her awoken to our universe from. Idk remember the name, I think it’s the repository but I’m not 100% sure on that. I also remember that Mara Sov left her pocket universe with her following of awoken, but that there was another awoken queen who chased her out. It’s possible that the IX open the way and our next major opposition could be a combination of the IX and the other Awoken Queen.
I don't know why but that picture Bungie teeing up the nine as the next big saga for us to deal with after the end of the light and dark saga. I really want the nine to play a part and dealing with the witness and the current shape of things but I feel like there's not enough room if that makes any sense.
I love the “few floors up” line it’s such great representation of higher dimensional beings akin to how it’s alluded to and described in Flatland. That they can see and witness in high dimensions we can’t fathom and thus can see a bit further beyond human comprehension.
i do think this is the time for us to be engaging with the Nine again their help could be pivotal in understanding the final shape and defeating the Witness
very interesting how the lore on the channeling robes could be foreshadowing what is to come or how things end. personally i think its inevitable for the nine to appear before the final shape and i think the emissary will also make a comeback. in one of those audio logs the drifter confesses that he did care about orin he still trusts her. to my mind this is a hint that one of the two remaining seasons will involve those two. maybe eris joins the fun to form a love triangle, who knows.
Almost seems like with all the new information we got about darkness that they are literally true creatures of darkness. The final shape will probably be something that destroys and remakes the universe. They don't want to die so five bucks witch queen will say Says we have to commune with them. Probably use strand as it touches everything. Also, I hope that we get information on what the vex calculations are saying because that would be interesting. After long girl on titan is safe. Sloane becomes the new titan vanguard, Osiris Will probably try to off the witch queen with his new powers of strand. We'll kill xivu and get a weapon that has an upgraded version of killing tally. As war makes her stronger, we just channel that through the gun. One of the hidden will probably appear as a an enemy cuz they saw the light in the darkness
I think the Nine's power/influence only extends as far as the galaxy. Dark matter is thought to be the reason galaxies can exist, since their normal mass alone wouldn't create enough gravity to hold it all together. So it would make sense that clusters of dark matter only exist in galaxies, and doesn't extend farther out. "Their farthest streams faded out into the turn of the galaxy" So limited to the Milky Way Galaxy, but that would also mean there could be others like them in other galaxies!
I'm calling it here, we stop the witness while sacrificing the traveler but our ghost still lives on and we keep our powers of light and darkness harnessing them from ourselves like we have done with strand and stasis. Light and Dark saga over but living on in us as gaurdians.
Correction: Dark matter is not theoretical in the real world, they know it exists because of its gravitational effect on visible matter, it just doesn't interact with electromagnetic, which means we can't interact with it and study it.
I'm excited to see how this plays out but at the same time I'm feeling the heavy "we're already done with Destiny" vibes and still remember the sting of discovering Luke Smith's disinterest in the story and worry that they might do or say anything or retcon anything at a whim or even by mistake. I'm as nervous for the end as I am keen to see what happens.
@@davidc9496 Luke’s pathetic interview when he stated that Destiny players don’t know what they want and when he shrugged and said “I thought we wrapped up the story of The Stranger and didn’t need to do anything more. She gave you a cool gun and that was it” referring to the end of D1’s campaign. Then under Luke’s captaincy there were retcons and mistakes that showed a truly piss poor attention to their own lore.
The Nine should be saved for Destiny 3, if dares is anything to look towards to find out what they are they probably control other universes or timelines, I know Xur says the "Paraverse" in dares sometimes. If that's true, I think it could be a perfect start for D3 if they want to make that ever. We know already so little and given they're working on 2 other games it'd give them time to perfect the story for it. The Vex also need way more appearance than what there is, they feel like roaches more than enemies
Whhen we saw the traveler emerging from the ground on the Witness’ planet , I immediately thought of the Nine since they exist in the core of planets . I wonder if the Traveler could be connected to the Nine in that way . Still no clue about who created or built it , or if it was even built , but perhaps the Traveler is what eventually happens to the Nine/dark matter beings pnce they reach full maturity ?
I was thinking the nine are the other people from the witness planets that escape thier reality because they didn't want to join or agree with merging. Because their always helping us out
Well,,, maybe the Nine created the Veil and traveler? Made a gambit scenario for light and dark. On a universal scale. The game began as soon as the Traveler revealed itself ironically, on a planet that had beings that would form the Witness. This was going to happen and the Nine new it,, imo
My spitball is that we are talking about The9 again because we are about to be talking about that choice and autonomy thing again. We are about to be having some fourth wall references again even. Topics that The9 have always been a conduit for. Because we just learned that The Witness' whole deal is that they reject how this universe works. They learned that there is no winnower and here they are out to be one/make one/make a universe with one. So they've locked themselves into filling that role. From there they have no remaining autonomy. They have no choices left to make. But we all know who is referred to as having infinite choices to make. So in will swoop The Guardian, free to do whatever they please, free to play the game and make whatever they want of the light and the dark instead of assuming these arbitrary false "gardener" and "winnower" dichotomies that The Witness is locked into. And so, in a manner that might echo of how we used light and dark to break Nezarek (who also wasn't quite in line with either light or dark - as we now know The Witness to not be either) we likely outmaneuver The Witness via freer use of light and dark. It is a 3rd rail to mention politics, but I can't help but see that being where this is likely headed towards something of an allegory for. It is very tempting to look at the underpinning philosophies present in the concept of wanting a "winnower" and assuming rigid purpose and form are needed as The Witness apparently does, contrast that with Bungie's politics, and suspect that this is all headed towards something of an exercise in the progressive reclamation of the phrase "facts don't care about your feelings". The Witness plays the role of the rigidity-seeking, higher purpose-needing, diversity-reducing, violent proof-framing, choice self-limiting reactionary about to have their whole myopic paradigm rained on by the complexity appreciating, purpose self-determining, open endedness compatible, and choice-making Guardian.
At this point, I think the nine are just the celestial bodies of the solar system personified. And since the witness can store and move planets, I think there can be a connection found that supports my idea.

I'm starting to really hate all the retconning Bungie does with their stories. In Forsaken, The Nine were meant to be the 9 members of the Yang Liwei (40900 crew/passengers) who didn't 'Awaken' (40891 Awoken) in the Distributary. "Yang Liwei, its forty thousand sleeping passengers, its nine hundred crew" - Cosmogyre III "In time the awoken spilled across the face of the world, and their number was forty thousand eight hundred ninety one." - Ecstasiate III IIRC there was another entry or two relating the Awoken to The Nine, but I can't recall it at the moment. Then again, they could retcon the retcon with "timey wimey stuff", since apparently Awoken don't follow a consistent linear timeline. In Ecstasiate II Mara asks Alis: "How long have you been alone?" "Forever, I think. Come."
Some of the things we know or speculate about the Nine don't make much sense. If they existed long before humans, why would they need us, and why would they disappear if we die? If they needed us to come into existence, how can planets other than Earth have their own members, and shouldn't be the Earth one the oldest, since there was no life until the Traveller terraformed planets and moons? Hopefully we get more answers in an upcoming season/expansion.
I think that the implication is that the Nine existed before humanity but life in the solar system gave shape to their thoughts. So it's not that they would die strictly speaking, but their thoughts would cease, they would no longer exist as they currently do.
So far there are 5 story threads that I could see becoming a season before the final shape; savathun/immaru, Io coming back, Mercury coming back, Whatever Earamis is doing and the nine. I could see bungie doing any one of these story threads for the two seasons to go potentially multiple at once

There's a section on page 9 of the Dust lorebook that reads: "...there is far, far more dark matter in the universe than bright. They [the Nine] will find a way to make new worlds of it. They will end their dependence on life, and on the Light of Guardians, which the falling veil will soon snuff out forever..." I assume the "falling veil" is alluding to the Veil that we know of post-Lightfall. Just thought that was fascinating and wanted to mention it. Thanks for the interesting and well made video Myelin 👍
Huh, just realized those platforms in the Prophecy Dungeon when you're fighting Phalanx Echo look like the Jakob Bohme diagram.
This made me go back to how the Distributary was created. We never got to really see another fight between raw light vs raw dark energy, in fact we never got to see the collapse.
What if the portal has similar properties to the Singularity where the Awoken were born.

I always liked the bit back in Reckoning where the Emissary knows that the Destiny "universe" is a "game". I remember there was a line from the Emissary saying "They're (the Guardian) different, they can leave this game" and the Nine were just like "uh, whut, we do not understand", referring to us, the player, playing this game; a 4th wall break.
Dark matter is not theoretical. Its existence is undeniable, we simply don't know what it is. Watch the video "dark matter is not a theory" by "acollierastro" for all the evidence of its existence.

A reminder that gravity is still considered a theory. Yes, it exists. We feel it during every second of the day. But it's still a theory.
It definitely exists. I went to a planetarium in Bradenton, FL and they talked about dark matter. It's naked to the human eye, as a result many people deny its existence.
Dark matter may not exist if our theory of gravity is wrong. A recent paper was published about this, with a focus on the Hubble constant and how we don't need dark matter to explain expansion if we adjust the gravity equations.
Glad the 9 are back in the mix. Been wondering about it for over a year.
Interesting! I enjoyed hearing how older lore is relevant in the story at the present.
I'm pretty sure the "somehow life effects the nine" was explained more clearly as the gravity attracting the dark matter, and the gravity every person every tree every rock and so on, also attracts swirls of dark matter making a more complex construction of dark matter that then acts as a brain and can think and that's what makes up a member of the nine, rather than just like a 'somehow' life force kind of thing. I think it still boils down to dark matter arranged in complex enough constructs of dark matter that it can think, and the influence life has on it is the same as planets and everything on them - all due to gravity arranging the dark matter complexly.
With the latest cut scene of the Traveler emerging from a planet, I think the link to the Nine, or something from their system very much like our Nine, becomes a little clearer. Or cloudier.

Matt, I just want to point something out: Dark Matter, the way it is described in Destiny as "space dust that interacts only through gravity" is actually incredibly accurate to the real world. This "space dust" is basically neutrinos, which are a LEADING candidate for what dark matter could end up being. :)
I'd have to go back through some old transcripts - but I'm pretty sure in basic story missions when Taken were inbound, there was an increase of sterile neutrinos detected. Probably by Asher Mir? Anyway. If space dust is neutrinos, and sterile neutrinos are "hypothetical particles that are believed to interact only via gravity and not via any of the other fundamental interactions of the Standard Model" (copied description from Wikipedia), those sterile neutrinos sound a lot like what Myelin described the Nine as in the image above, essential beings born from dark matter and given life through our three-dimensional life, the gravity of the planets and the stars and the galaxies.
Spitballing here: maybe there's more connection between the Taken and the Nine than we know? Obviously Xur, Agent of the Nine, his will is not his own, and the Taken are the same way, devoid of free will and solely obeying their Taken King/Queen. I think there's something there that plays into what we will see the Final Shape become.
It's interesting they mention running gambit to prepare us, a lot of d2 players hate gambit, I personally enjoy it
Bungie wants to continue making stories past Final Shape. Bungie also mentioned that Lightfall is the beginning of them expanding the universe and trying to show that Light Vs Dark isn't the only thing Destiny has to offer.
Not all of the Nine are on our side and they can make "counterfeit Taken".
So I'm thinking the Nine are definitely a part of that future story telling.
I'm still betting on the Drifter being the twin that is mentioned in Orin's lore way back. The twin snakes. Two snakes shedding their skin to survive another day. She apparently has a tattoo that fascinated drifter. Could be one that he also has the matching tattoo that they both got before they became what they are now. It could be a snake tattoo.
Can see drifter show up at the last moment fighting a taken queen xivu arath. whipping out a gambit bank shouting get in the bank and catching xivu like a damn pokemon.

It is because next season is about the Nine. They know a lot about the Veil and we are going to need that information. Savathûn saved Lavinia Garvia Umr Tawil after she passed through the Cocytus Gate so that she could learn of the Nine. It would not surprise me if both Mara Sov and Ikora Rey have been looking for her ever since.
In the lore its stated that 4 of the nine are evil, and the other 5 are on our side, or the other way round i dont remember, so i doubt theyre gonna be used for the final shape and then forgotten about, not to say they wont be used for the final shape, just that it wont be their last appearance.

either Season 22 or Season 23 is going to bring the Nine to the forefront of their story as part of figuring out how to travel through the portal the Witness made.
I just wanted to say I love this video - I think it would be a great way to fold The Nine back into the main story as we approach the end.

Agree, the aesthetic and mystery of the Nine are amazing with the multiverse stuff going on. They and the aesthetic and technological sci-fi side of Clovis/Rasputin capture my awe of the mystery of the D2 world the most. Vex are a close third with the labyrinths they create like in VoG. Cabal and Hive are cool of course, but their lore and aesthetic is more tied to royalty, Rome, and religion, which we already have so much literature about. The technological side of D2 I think is more inspiring.

That final frontier vibe is was got me too, understanding the creation of all things that somewhat represents our reality with how Bungie does actually use science in their world (arc = electromagnetism, solar = heat/thermal energy, void = vacuum/nothingness, stasis = no energy/change/time (opposite of solar) and also control, strand = materialization from the quantum happenings of space (like quantum foam)/somethingness (opposite of void) and also chaos, etc.)

In my head, "The Nine" is just a euphemism for the writers to break the fourth wall. E.G. When Xur is like "I do not entirely control my movements", it's literally just the writers saying "you go here because we need something to be here"
Bungies always done that kind of thing, especially in marathon. They talk about the player a lot.
Aren't there 2 factions within the 9? One that wants to keep things the way they are and one that wants to see what will happen to them if we are wiped out?
This, along with the timing of the return of 9 lore makes me speculate that the factions of the 9 created the traveler and the veil to enact the plan of each side.
Meta talk about the game for a moment, whenever I hear a game or show talk about a character or set of characters that have long since been unmentioned, I feel it’s a way to bridge them back into the series. Games have done this a lot in the past, but the biggest example for me is in an old rpg I played as a kid and replayed recently as an adult. In Legend of the Dragoon, a specific character who stops showing up in the first disc makes a reappearance in the 4th, but characters began mentioning them again around the midpoint of disc 3 and on.

With Destiny 2 the same thing applies to Cayde who we started talking about again (sooner in the lore) recently with the memorial and some moments of dialog, and now we know Cayde is returning in a way in TFS.
I think mentioning the IX now is an attempt to foreshadow the next saga of Destiny. If I remember right, the IX are searching for the place Mara Sov brought her awoken to our universe from. Idk remember the name, I think it’s the repository but I’m not 100% sure on that. I also remember that Mara Sov left her pocket universe with her following of awoken, but that there was another awoken queen who chased her out.
It’s possible that the IX open the way and our next major opposition could be a combination of the IX and the other Awoken Queen.
The final shape is a reality where the darkness is just a variable in a game. Somewhere reality is safe.
I don't know why but that picture Bungie teeing up the nine as the next big saga for us to deal with after the end of the light and dark saga. I really want the nine to play a part and dealing with the witness and the current shape of things but I feel like there's not enough room if that makes any sense.
maybe Xur and the good Nines will help us vs the witness, leaving the bad Nines to be angry and come destroy us

I love the “few floors up” line it’s such great representation of higher dimensional beings akin to how it’s alluded to and described in Flatland. That they can see and witness in high dimensions we can’t fathom and thus can see a bit further beyond human comprehension.
i do think this is the time for us to be engaging with the Nine again

personally i think its inevitable for the nine to appear before the final shape and i think the emissary will also make a comeback. in one of those audio logs the drifter confesses that he did care about orin he still trusts her. to my mind this is a hint that one of the two remaining seasons will involve those two. maybe eris joins the fun to form a love triangle, who knows.
Almost seems like with all the new information we got about darkness that they are literally true creatures of darkness. The final shape will probably be something that destroys and remakes the universe. They don't want to die so five bucks witch queen will say Says we have to commune with them. Probably use strand as it touches everything. Also, I hope that we get information on what the vex calculations are saying because that would be interesting. After long girl on titan is safe. Sloane becomes the new titan vanguard, Osiris Will probably try to off the witch queen with his new powers of strand. We'll kill xivu and get a weapon that has an upgraded version of killing tally. As war makes her stronger, we just channel that through the gun. One of the hidden will probably appear as a an enemy cuz they saw the light in the darkness
I think the Nine's power/influence only extends as far as the galaxy. Dark matter is thought to be the reason galaxies can exist, since their normal mass alone wouldn't create enough gravity to hold it all together. So it would make sense that clusters of dark matter only exist in galaxies, and doesn't extend farther out.

So limited to the Milky Way Galaxy, but that would also mean there could be others like them in other galaxies!

I'm calling it here, we stop the witness while sacrificing the traveler but our ghost still lives on and we keep our powers of light and darkness harnessing them from ourselves like we have done with strand and stasis. Light and Dark saga over but living on in us as gaurdians.
Correction: Dark matter is not theoretical in the real world, they know it exists because of its gravitational effect on visible matter, it just doesn't interact with electromagnetic, which means we can't interact with it and study it.

I'm excited to see how this plays out but at the same time I'm feeling the heavy "we're already done with Destiny" vibes and still remember the sting of discovering Luke Smith's disinterest in the story and worry that they might do or say anything or retcon anything at a whim or even by mistake. I'm as nervous for the end as I am keen to see what happens.

She gave you a cool gun and that was it” referring to the end of D1’s campaign. Then under Luke’s captaincy there were retcons and mistakes that showed a truly piss poor attention to their own lore.

The Nine should be saved for Destiny 3, if dares is anything to look towards to find out what they are they probably control other universes or timelines, I know Xur says the "Paraverse" in dares sometimes. If that's true, I think it could be a perfect start for D3 if they want to make that ever. We know already so little and given they're working on 2 other games it'd give them time to perfect the story for it. The Vex also need way more appearance than what there is, they feel like roaches more than enemies
Whhen we saw the traveler emerging from the ground on the Witness’ planet , I immediately thought of the Nine since they exist in the core of planets . I wonder if the Traveler could be connected to the Nine in that way . Still no clue about who created or built it , or if it was even built , but perhaps the Traveler is what eventually happens to the Nine/dark matter beings pnce they reach full maturity ?

Well,,, maybe the Nine created the Veil and traveler? Made a gambit scenario for light and dark. On a universal scale. The game began as soon as the Traveler revealed itself ironically, on a planet that had beings that would form the Witness. This was going to happen and the Nine new it,, imo
My spitball is that we are talking about The9 again because we are about to be talking about that choice and autonomy thing again. We are about to be having some fourth wall references again even. Topics that The9 have always been a conduit for.
Because we just learned that The Witness' whole deal is that they reject how this universe works. They learned that there is no winnower and here they are out to be one/make one/make a universe with one. So they've locked themselves into filling that role. From there they have no remaining autonomy. They have no choices left to make. But we all know who is referred to as having infinite choices to make.
So in will swoop The Guardian, free to do whatever they please, free to play the game and make whatever they want of the light and the dark instead of assuming these arbitrary false "gardener" and "winnower" dichotomies that The Witness is locked into. And so, in a manner that might echo of how we used light and dark to break Nezarek (who also wasn't quite in line with either light or dark - as we now know The Witness to not be either) we likely outmaneuver The Witness via freer use of light and dark.
It is a 3rd rail to mention politics, but I can't help but see that being where this is likely headed towards something of an allegory for. It is very tempting to look at the underpinning philosophies present in the concept of wanting a "winnower" and assuming rigid purpose and form are needed as The Witness apparently does, contrast that with Bungie's politics, and suspect that this is all headed towards something of an exercise in the progressive reclamation of the phrase "facts don't care about your feelings". The Witness plays the role of the rigidity-seeking, higher purpose-needing, diversity-reducing, violent proof-framing, choice self-limiting reactionary about to have their whole myopic paradigm rained on by the complexity appreciating, purpose self-determining, open endedness compatible, and choice-making Guardian.

I'm starting to really hate all the retconning Bungie does with their stories. In Forsaken, The Nine were meant to be the 9 members of the Yang Liwei (40900 crew/passengers) who didn't 'Awaken' (40891 Awoken) in the Distributary.
"Yang Liwei, its forty thousand sleeping passengers, its nine hundred crew" - Cosmogyre III
"In time the awoken spilled across the face of the world, and their number was forty thousand eight hundred ninety one." - Ecstasiate III
IIRC there was another entry or two relating the Awoken to The Nine, but I can't recall it at the moment.
Then again, they could retcon the retcon with "timey wimey stuff", since apparently Awoken don't follow a consistent linear timeline. In Ecstasiate II Mara asks Alis:
"How long have you been alone?"
"Forever, I think. Come."

Some of the things we know or speculate
about the Nine don't make much sense. If they existed long before humans, why would they need us, and why would they disappear if we die? If they needed us to come into existence, how can planets other than Earth have their own members, and shouldn't be the Earth one the oldest, since there was no life until the Traveller terraformed planets and moons? Hopefully we get more answers in an upcoming season/expansion.
I think that the implication is that the Nine existed before humanity but life in the solar system gave shape to their thoughts. So it's not that they would die strictly speaking, but their thoughts would cease, they would no longer exist as they currently do.
The Nine can wipe out The Witness with the snap of their fingers. Why do they refuse to intervene if all of existence is in peril?

So far there are 5 story threads that I could see becoming a season before the final shape; savathun/immaru, Io coming back, Mercury coming back, Whatever Earamis is doing and the nine.
I could see bungie doing any one of these story threads for the two seasons to go potentially multiple at once
