Bungie has been building up Drifter and Eris! | Myelin Games

- Welcome back, Guardians. Season of the Deep has revealed some interesting truths about this season’s cast of characters, but perhaps the most wholesome revelations have come from Drifter; about him and his moonlight, Eris Morn. We’ve been getting glimpses into how their relationship has grown in the shadows of Destiny 2’s larger story, blooming slowly like a Moonflower in the night. These two characters have been through so much in their lives, carrying the weight of lost teammates, wariness from their closest allies, and even harrowing brushes with the Darkness, itself. It is because of these separate, shared experiences that Eris and Drifter drifted toward one another, eventually forming an immensely strong bond between them. Drifter and Eris are not only CUTE AF, but also, I can 100% see them forming a new Vanguard, post final shape. Our understanding of the Darkness has completely changed, the current Vanguard are completely burnt out, and with the end of the light vs dark saga I can see Drifter and Eris stepping up. So I am going to walk you through the development of Drifter and Eris’s relationship throughout the seasons, and also dive into any hints that they may take on more of a leadership role in Destiny.

Felt like we needed just a feel good lore video. Drifter and Eris cute AF
Hearing you say that just shouted, FANFIC WRITER! lol
Maybe you should be one.
Yes they are!
Drifter: *Shows his Ghost
Eris :👁️
👁️👁️
Drifter: Enough foolin’ around
Eris: See it through
God darn it
I chuckled at those eyes
Lmfaoo
Edited to get the eyes in the right place I suspect
These two offer by far the best interactions as characters in the Destiny 2 story. They don't take center stage, but all of the events of Destiny have revolved around them. Even though they come from odd origins compared to other more prominent characters in the Destiny Universe, what makes them pivitol to us as Gaurdians is their honest reflections of their humanity. Something we as the Guardian need to anchor us within our paradigm. They're why we chose to do what we do as Gaurdians. They may fight for us, but it is THEY who WE truly fight for.
See, now THIS is the story we wanted all along. 9 years of Destiny lore for a solid romance arc.
Season 24: season of the engagement…
Drifter: Brother!! I need a best man!!
Agreed, it's a great B-line story arc
@@brianbullington8820and go play gambit after the wedding
U don't think Osiris and saints arc wasn't good?
@@mistanomercy5245 statistics say most people are straight.
Plus hard to have big feeling for a man, and his robot love🥸🤓😎
Back in Beyond Light, I was super excited to see the Exo Stranger rendezvous with Eris and Drifter.
I was like, " TEAM DARK, YEEEAAAHHH!!!".
yeah dude they didn’t really do a good job with the whole dark vanguard thing. was sick asf but then we never see the three of them together again
@iniassmith3434 yeah, it was such a perfect point for the "outcasts" of the Vanguard to showcase their abilities. It would've been cool for each to be mentors for Stasis in regards to the different classes, but each of them are Hunters, it seems.
@xlaststarfighter9195 actually Drifter is so old that he has evolved to have no class. Dark ages didn't have classes either. Shin Malphur even comments that Drifter is beyond classification. He acts like a hunter, but wears a robe with large shoulder pads.
Eris was a hunter before the hellmouth but dresses and behaves like a warlock
@@FEDsShotMOM that's true!
Talk about incredible voice acting. Eris never fails to give me goosebumps man she’s such a strong character
Low key bae lol 😌
They've emerged as 2 of the best characters in the game even though They've long been my favourites.
People can be critical.of many things (often rightfully so) but the performances behind the characters in this s game have always been top.tier.
Love from Ireland, mate!
I 99% agree, but i personally find it very hard to like Osiris. The voice actor definitely dropped the ball in Lightfall imo
I love these two, the way drifter calls Eris Moondust makes me unbelievably happy
Moondust x Rat
@@brandonperry2253moonrat
I love the nicknames Drifter has for everyone.
Eris has fascinated me since dark below and ive been getting hyped for this for so long
My favorite line in Destiny comes from Taken King, when Eris first appears in the DLC and throws her Ahamkara bone on the vanguard table.
Cayde: Eris, get your rock off my map
Eris: Growls
@scoobypup01 Cayde and Eris had the funniest dynamic. I miss him
They really pulled a heart string with this one. It's crazy how traumatic experiences can bring even the most different of people together. I freaking love this bravo Bungie for the amazing writing. 11/10
Why is everyone is so obsessed with it, it's good but not a master piece. Maybe I am not seeing it
Moon Dust is a badass name.. Drifter is like the badboy of Destiny, but he's good. He actually reminds me of Gambit from the X-Men
Quite the rebound from the narrative team after only giving them a handful of lines in Beyond Light. I also can't help but notice that both characters ended up in pretty awful positions in the dark future timeline. What are the odds that each of them finding comfort in the other saved us from seeing Eris go sicko mode in our timeline?
I have been shipping these two since Season of Arrivals. They 100% deserve happiness after all the shit they've been through, and I would be so happy if they find it in each other.
I would like to see Eris and Drifter together eventually the characters deserve it.
You may as well sencence one of them to death.
I don't want anymore groan inducing romance dialogue in destiny, i cant take anymore after all of Saint's and Osiris's robot human relationship quips. Not to mention the recent forced romance between Crow and Amanda last season
@@Klodhvig yeah but the story is basically up to Bungie I didn't like the gay Robot wizard thing between Osiris and Saint but here we are we just kinda gotta deal with it I kinda miss D1 days when everything between the characters was just up for interpretation although between Drifter and Eris it would make more sense
@@Klodhvig BAH.......thats what makes it good! but hey, not everyone like to feel. I get that....from time to time.
@@alexanderschwartz3832 I wouldnt care as much if they didn't turn saint from being a ruthless warrior titan to now being the generic le sweet and wholesome tough guy, his character has become a complete joke. Same with Osiris, in destiny 1, we thought he was some terrorist with a fanatical cult following but all that just became such an irrelevant joke. Both of them lost everything that once made them extremely interesting and revered. The same thing also happened to Rasputin
Destiny 2, Season of the Romance. We’ll get a Crimson Days version of Gambit alongside it.
"Your enemies have summoned a primeval, they kiss it, they'll win this thing!"
The last lore tab is literally the best and the most intimate one we’ve seen yet
I can't quite tell if these two have a great story arc or if I'm just so starved for character development in the series that I see the drawn out "will they/won't they" romance as brilliantly refreshing
Bro, a Dark Vanguard with Drifter, Eris, and Sloane would be FIRE! And then imagine what the lore would be like if Zavala, Ikora, and Cayde got to be like an ordinary fireteam again?
That'd be a great way to write Zavala out of the story, so to speak. Maybe he and Ikora realize that Cayde was right the whole time, and they were all meant to be in the field, all the while the dark vanguard convienintly undergo enough character development to feel comfortable at the desk lol
Imagine my surprise when Bungie starts the new Dark Vanguard by being shippers lol.
I been saying it for years. Destiny has if not the best story writing in gaming history. Ill die on that hill
Elsie getting left and forgoten about out of the dark vanguard like 😐🧐
Osiris too... Lightfall may not have quite hit the spot for most players but no denying how big a role Osiris had in understanding the darkness as far as Strand goes.
Elsi and Anna have been busy low-key bonding since season of the seraph. I'm betting our Besto-Exo Stranger still has more to show of herself soon, I'm sure.
I always found it cute that Difter called Eris Moondust. And it was funny when he called her "Three-Eyes" in the audiolog about Shaxx humming Savathûn's Song. Also "I've got a beam of moonlight keeping me going" 🥺
Zavalla and Ikora will die, Zavalla in the upcoming seasons and Ikora in Final shape. 🤷♀
Drifter and Eris were two characters that I didn't have a ton of interest in (more so Drifter than Eris), but have now become some of my favorite characters because of the way Bungie has fleshed out their relationship and backstories. I really look forward to seeing how they develop further as it seems like they are going to play big roles. The "Darkness Vanguard" Myelin mentioned would be something I'd be hugely interested in seeing and hope that's the direction they are going.
Nice. Can never get enough of Ol' Drippy Eyes. Morla always imbues her with a deepness that's now finally coming out in the story too.
Finally, thank god. Those two deserve each other! About time bungie made a good decision.
I would love if after final shape we get a remodel tower for the future with a dark vanguard of drifter, the stranger, and Eros and a light vanguard of Zavala, crow, and ikora
How can Eris call Drifter smelly when she has hive goop dripping out of her eyes 💀
So. A thought. When Eris was looking over the relics, she told Drifter that she had an idea as to how they could be used. Then at the end of the season, Mithrax developed the darkness-tea to awaken Osiris. Did Eris give Drifter the hint, the idea on how to distill the relics, let him tell Mithrax so the Eliksni could get their "win"? Without the supporting lore, the sudden development of the tea seemed strange, the idea coming out of nowhere and didn't make sense. With the lore, which I had missed in game, I think the idea is much more tangible.
Could use some new “Dark Vanguard” strikes or missions. What a fire name!
They're interesting characters and I really enjoy the interactions between them but I don't think they will be our "darkness vanguard". I suspect that'll be Elsie, Osiris and an as yet unshown 3rd. They are the 1s who taught us our darkness powers so far. Both fill the role of a class with Elsie being a Hunter and Osiris a Warlock (the 3rd will be a Titan of course). A final point (and admittedly I may be over thinking it with a pointless connection) they both have had a cutscene with a Pouka responding to them. The Pouka have been know to dig up memories to have conversations with people which over all gives me the sense of being the darkness equivalent of a ghost.
Definitely. Tbh I kinda hated the Drifter character when he was first introduced. He seemed to one note and frankly uninteresting- like The Spider or Calus. But since beyond light and definitely this season and through his interactions with Eris has really grown. Eris I always found a fun character and puzzle box. Nice to see these two together…as long as Bungie doesn’t pull some fridging BS in the future
I like how the "swamp shrimps" Drifter feeds Eris are presumably from Savathun's Throne World. So still a terrifying thing to eat.
It’s absolutely astonishing to realize, that the Egregore connects back to the Witness at the center of the “web”. The Taken, and most likely most of the Pyramids may not be piloted by any underlines, or even the Disciples. Most may be controlled by the Witness, while the Disciples control their own ships. But, the first Egragore created, may have been from the “first victims of the Witness”. The race that sacrificed their lives for knowledge, as the Witness took their place as one combined entity of hate. It makes sense that the Witness uses Egregore, Taken energy, and other means to communicate with its fleet, minions, and brainwashed Disciples. It could’ve used the Strand, and the connection that the dimension/network that the Weave provides. But, it could not discover this power as we had, because it desires complete control, even through force. Where the Guardians chose to flow with the river, the Witness wishes to direct it and redirect it to its will as it desires. Even if the Witness realized the potential of Strand after analyzing a sample of a tangle, it would most likely reject using it over Egragore. Because Strand is about flexibility and freedom. The Witness’ ideals, beliefs, and values are about rigidness and control.
you're deeper on this lore than our guy Myelin lol
We are not fighting The Darkness, we are dealing with The Darkness, to find that balance, remember Ulan-Tan. Symmetry.
I WOULD say “I can see this happening”, Drifter has stated SEVERAL TIMES that he does NOT want to have anything to do with the Vanguard. When asked if he would step up as Hunter vanguard, he swiftly turned it down. He is very much a free spirit.
Eris, not so much, I can see her stepping up if need be. She seems the responsible type, and the type who would willingly step-up to the plate for the greater good, despite her personal feelings.
If you ask any Hunter within the city walls to take up the mantle of Hunter Vanguard, you’ll get the same answer - absolutely not. It’s not just Drifter (if he even is a hunter, that is. There are a lot of correlations that would support it, but did dark age lightbearers have classes like we do in the modern day?), all Hunters view the gig as a ball to which they would be chained. Historically, it’s been passed down between Hunters via the Vanguard Dare, something which I don’t know much about beyond it’s existence. That’s the only reason there has been a Hunter Vanguard at all in the past, and the late Cayde-6 wasn’t able to saddle it on anyone else before he was killed in the Prison of Elders.
I’ll say this much, though - the universe as depicted in Destiny is changing, and changing fast. The Vanguard as a body of leadership is withering away, Light and Darkness are blending, and the Last Safe City has become a battleground more times than we can count on one hand. Drifter has the potential to be a leader in something as major as the Vanguard, but perhaps there will be another body of leadership with a different shape that better suits future circumstances. Whatever it ends up being, he’ll likely follow Eris into that role, since they’re major parts of each other’s support systems.
@@datoneguy506 though the vanguard dare for hunters can differ, as far as we’ve known, from forsaken. Cayde’s was whoever kills tanicks wins the dare, loser has to join vanguard. When his friend was killed by Taniks, Cayde felt guilty and took up the mantle. Then it went on that whoever killed HIM would take the mantle and his gun. That was uldren, we killed uldren. So, Technically WE have replaced Cayde…..which is probably why they have not replaced him in-game. Drifter, does not consider himself part of any class, he only describes himself as a rogue lightbearer . Eris, before she lost her light, was a hunter whose specialty was ‘Blade dancer’. Just as Cayde’s was Golden gun.
Hell yeah - thanks for elaborating on that. Didn’t realize I was straight-up wrong
@@datoneguy506 you weren’t straight-up wrong.
Great recap of their story, thank you Myelin!
Eris said she wondered if she might be able to allow herself more than peace: “…is “joy” the word?”
I think it’s possible that was her cautious way of hinting to Drifter that part of her felt she wanted to start building relationships/connections again after all that time grieving in solitude on Luna.
When he asks her later if she’s found that joy yet, she replies: “Soon. Joy is built… but I have taken the first step.”
Whether platonic or romantic, relationships are indeed built and not simply found, and when they’re genuine and reciprocated, they require trust to experience that joy they bring. Lovely seeing these two interact and grow like this, excellent writing!
I love the concept of a dark vanguard and call it the danguard
eris was never hated and welcomed by the vanguard even knowing she had knoweldege and understanding of the hive that could have collapsed the vanguard. and drifter was always was hated by the vanguard even half way now he had knowledge just as powerful as eris. drifter now is just starting to be an impact on the vanguard. could this be a reason drifter and eris are bonding? lmk if im wrong though.
That is 100% correct, although I think it's just part of it. Eris and Drifter had to grow on me. Now I like them more than any other character in Destiny. They possess depth and true humanity. It is shown in their reconciliations throughout the story of Destiny. I think our guy Myelin suspects this too, which is why I think he mentioned the "Dark" vanguard, or rather next generation of Vanguard leaders?
@@kylekrausbauer5866 awe okay cool im starting to see that with this part of the lore. thank you brotha
I could imagine one of them stepping up to be vanguard eventually, but idk if it would be at the same time, I’m pretty sure they’re both hunters
As far as I know, but I'm not sure, Drifter doesn't have a class.
Imagine drifter eris and dark cayde 7... If this happened .id cheris this in my old age 11, 12 years into this story.
omg, yuz!
If a Dark Vanguard is formed, I hope it’s comprised of Germaine, Eris, and Elsie Bray. Sloane is one of the most boring, monotone characters in Destiny 2, and her becoming partially Taken hasn’t changed that. Elsie has a stronger connection to the Darkness and is actually utilizing it’s power in Stasis.
15:35 “bitch you live like this” lmao I forgot they included that
Drifter knows he's hit the spot when Eris closes all 3 eyes!
When I first heard back in haunted, Eris said, "Take care, Rat." I cried the happiest tears. I never really considered even wanting a subplot about a naturally growing romance in Destiny, but now I live for Eris and Drifter.
Dark Vanguard, now that's comedy, regardless they had as much of a development as i have the will to finish all 97 warhammer 40k minis, as for this build up...yeah the kiithless simply laugh at the dark Vanguard
Ps: destiny was a bad game from day one and even today still is
Honestly these two are so good, no other characters in Destiny even compare for me, until Cayde comes back in Final Shape at least 🙏
Everyone is hung up on who the next Hunter Vanguard will be..
We call them "The Dark Vanguard" but, what if they are/would be the new Vanguard.
If we assume they would be Sloane, Drifter and Eris, they'd fulfil the "trinity" although loosely.
Eris acknowledges The Darkness as a necessity. Perhaps The Vanguard we *NEED* is not one that sits on one side or the other, but one that respects/understands both sides of the fence.
The above are/were Lightbearers in some respect, and have some experience with the darkness. Eris, and her Hive-ness, Sloane and her connection to Ahsa and the Taken, Drifter and his dealings with the Dredgens, Shin, and well everything Gambit.
Hopefully we learn more about the nine soon via drifters connection with the emissary as well.
The two sit solemnly in the wreckage of The Derelict.
"Do you want to be the one to say it, or would you like me to have those honors?"
Eris wripes the crumbles of dried blood from her face, glancing up at as she does so.
"I don't believe it is wise to acknowledge such a blunder as any one guardians fault"
"See, I thinks that's where you and I still differ Moondust, I very much see this as a time to point blame" Drifter shifts his weight with a groan. A bit of scorched rubble falls beneath him. "Ikora saw this as a chance to end the Witness, and we just happened to be in the way--"
"THAT'S.. that's not what happened.." Eris rises slowly. She peers around the hull as little specs of void light still linger on the burnt edges of the ship. "We need the witness gone, and she knew we would be oka--"
"But it would be alright if we weren't, right? We arent seen as a major loss to the cause--hell they ain't even commed to see if we're still kickin'. Shame too, I was just starting to warm up to 'em."
Through a large gash in the hull, Eris focuses her gaze on the orb previous pulled by The Derelict, still lingering in space above them. "Is that.. couldn't be.." Drifter chokes out in disbelief. At the center of the orb, stands The Witness, visably unharmed, but with eyes much larger than typical. "I refuse to believe that was part of her plan from the beginning" Drifter spits a shot of blood and walks up beside Eris.
"What exactly does that mean for it?" She asks with a tinge of wonder"
"Well Moondust, I'm not actually sure. I suppose we have been needing an update to the Gambit boss-pool
I've always loved Drifter from the get-go. Seeing him and Cayde as the ones who set up Gambit made me love that game mode too. I've always thought Eris is weird. I came to appreciate her much more in Season of the Haunted. If I had to choose between darkness Vanguard and normal Vanguard, I cannot leave Ikora & Cayde-6 but damn I would want to.
I've always liked Drifter, but especially lately, I think he's become my favorite character.
In opening up to the rest of the cast and showing behind those walls of trauma, grief, and pain, he has a mountain of kindness and empathy.
All this time he's been telling us what the key was to find it, what he needed from others, but never had the heart to give:
"Trust"
Incidentally, don't think I've ever been happier with my choice back in Season of the Drifter.
Hey Meylin, I regard both you and Byf as the true Loremasters of Destiny. I would just love to see both of you collaborate on your reactions to the upcoming Final Shape showcase. A full discussion on your feelings about the reveal and the lore implications.
Our Guardian: **Facing mind bending horrors, while dying endlessly facing every enemy of humanity with using new darkness powers**
Eris and Drifter: Dinner dates
The "I enjoy your silence" line 🤤
Love both of them. They are a realistic couple in everything from bonding over loss and trauma to the rough irritation at the start to what they develop into. This is great writing as far as characters go and again it’s a shame it’s all text because most people will pass it up. Also, confirmed that Drifter would eat 20lbs of crawfish with Holtzman.
A Darkness Vanguard would be a refreshing addition and great way to continue Destiny's story.
We have had the OG for years now and we lost one, soon potentially another. And with our potential future battles extending beyond the system of Sol, a step into their stories would be welcome.
I though it would be them and Elsie for the dark Vanguard. Especially since Elsie basically guided them through their encounters with Stasis
I think Drifter’s Nightmare would be the children killed during the Dark Age by the Iron Lords’ crossfire.
They're like awkward teenagers first getting together. Weird hive-magic-eyed, creepy, survivalist teenagers.
Whoo boy the impicaltion that Drifter is the Warlock of the Dark Vanguard.... lol Also I hope they become a thing their interactions are top notch and have been waiting for it since Arrivals.
Oh snap, are we shipping drifter / morn? Side note, If the game engine is truly what holds the bungie devs back, for the love of God please get a new engine, I would pay a premium to be able to see all of this stuff in game!
These two have experienced pain and loss that has shattered many weaker guardians. The lifetime of grief and the mental toll this takes on them is quiet obvious from literally any interactions with the two characters and their trauma bonding is healing them with shared experiences in ways the light or darkness never could.
I want these types of bonds between characters to be just as important as the bond between the traveler and the veil. Something unique and incalculable that was not expected of the living races that they created on their own.
Unlike the light and dark which have to exist at arms length from each other in most cases. The living races excel at making bonds with others. Similar to how the citizens of the last city have now bonded with the Eliksni and Cabal in the last year.
I just realized watching this that egregore are Veil spores mycelium. The Veil being the cosmos fungal consciousness of the universe.
The irony of Eris saying that drifter’s “odor repellent”
I can’t imagine Hive smell terribly pleasant.
No cap I don’t trust drifter twin lowkey used to make threats most untrustworthy things in destiny Mara sov, drifter, and the redjacks
@myelingames on a side note, we all might want to stop using the phrase "fighting the darnkess" as darkenss is just a power, like the light, which we are all using quite readily now. Not sure what to replace it with though.
Been waiting for this since Beyond Light. Too bad we'll get it when very few people still care about the game...
Empress Caiatl: (shoves Drifter and Eris together)
*NOW KITH*
Eris went from calling Drifter: rat to drifter to his real name ( idk the spelling ) ive noticed this through the years, i always liked it.
Imagine the gossip between Mara and Ikora when they see their mutual friend getting soft on Drifter, actually no don't imagine that, we need a lore tab on this now
I thought to believe they started flushing them out around season of arrival hmm still loving the content keep doing the travelers work ❤
I like the darkness more than I like the light... and Eris and Drifter are my favourites! 😊
If Eris and Drifter don't get together during final shape....we riot!!!
I had my local language model simulate a spicy scene with Eris and Drifter and it was disgusting
Drifter is going to die next and eris is going to go full darkness queen losing the rat king her last chance for partner especially after letting her fireteam down
Eris and Drifter are so fuckin cute together and I hope we get more of them going forward
Love it. Normalish people with normalish feelings operating within insane scenarios.
Hear drifter and eris romance is really cool they could form the dark vanguard!!!
With Gambit basicsly going into maintenence mode, I fear for the Drifter
I mean… they wear matching headbands. Couple goals
I'm still waiting for the pay-off from siding with the Drifter 5 years ago
If Eris, Drifter and Sloane are gonna be a dark vangard then does meake Drifter a Warkock?
As a chef, I'm pretty sure my wife became seriously into me after I cooked for her a few times.
Drifter and Eris ❤
Drifter is going to knock some of that moon dust off of her Victoria Secret's.. haha
There's still plot I'm waiting for. The decision to snitch or side with drifter
Rat and Moon Dust
Driftis Drifter+Eris. Destiny power couple, it's shipped
This has been the story line I have been following the most ever since that first "dark vanguard" cut scene. I love all the dialog and lore entries between these two.
Drifter & Eris, up in an Egregore cluster, holding hands
Rat n Moondust are the best couple in video games ❤🖤🖤
Eris IS the Main Villain. Always has been.
She wasnt TRAPPED on the Moon...she was CONVERTED on the Moon.
Her "Queen" was never Mara Sov... it was always Savathun.
She has been using the Guardians to remove every single obstacle for her.
Then she will betray them.
Game over.
Oh....and Oryx will be back

great video sir

So how will Drifter react to goth hive goddess mommy Eris
i still ship dem im sorry but i cant stop shiping eris and daddy drifter
Dark Vanguard - cool. Dark Romance - awesome.
Love his sweet nickname for her Moondust❤
