The issue is not the dress code. It’s the disproportionate response by FIDE. If they’d fined him $200 for each game played and told him that the fine would be $500 per game tomorrow, that’s one thing. To start effectively deducting points is insane. Yes, FIDE attracts some bigger sponsorship now. But that’s mainly down to Magnus anyway. Picking a fight on this issue is disgraceful and unprincipled.

The issue is not ‘following the rules’. It’s the disproportionality of making this a major issue during a tournament. The punishment far exceeds the ‘crime’. FIDE exists for and because of chess players. They’re not there to be the subject of virtue-signal bullying. The more so given what MC personally has done to boost the game.
@@chazzabh the issue is only about following of rules. there is no disproportion. rules are beyond players, tournament or personal opinions of people. If u have a problem with it, why did u not protest about it for so long, played for more than 10 years with the rule and now he complains? No one is degrading/undermining the achievements or contribution of MC, but rules are rules, follow or gtfo.
michael jordan was fined $5000 per game for wearing his personal "shoes" instead of whatever they wanted. They could've just fined him. I feel that if they fine is a win-win situation. Magus is more into business now and he has had a lot of privilege after his success. To give concession from rules just for him means showing favoritism and it will affect the moral of the other players.

Separate rules? Does becoming world no 1 bring everyone down to your whims and wishes? If everyone is getting fined why will magnus not get fined? And playing for these many years doesn't he know the rules? I think its simply a provocation by magnus done purposefully, so that he can continue with his idea of freestyle tournament.
Magnus thinks he is bigger than the game now. The success has went into his head. Rules are rules, same for all players. Time to move on from such self righteous narcissistic mentality players
Sutovsky is in a delicate situation here. He has a strong stand, speaks clearly with leadership, while dealing with some rebelling and a bit childish behavior from Magnus here, who clearly has a bigger agenda. Magnus has become so strong, not only in chess, but by the eyeballs he brings to the table, that it’s not only about the number of players that would leave FIDE but the number of eyeballs that would be redirected elsewhere. And that could really divide chess. FIDE needs to take that in consideration, to work into evolving chess, adapting it to the new reality, not only stick to conservative, established way of doing.
If Magnus has followed Fide rules all these years, why not this time... He should be aware of these and was. Looks like he was not doing well this tournament and used this as an opportunity to not play anymore... Otherwise why would he not follow the rules of he was winning...
According to FIDE CEO Emil Sutovsky, players in the next FIDE Chess tournament must wear yellow underwear during the 5th game. The arbiter will enforce this rule, and any player failing to comply will not be allowed to participate in that match
All players attended to this tournament know the rules. Magnus is aware of everything and he knew he was warned. And it happened just like he thought, then he resisted for no reason and was kicked out of the tournament. This action that FIDE did there was correct. Magnus should accept the fact that he breaks the rules so the penalty occurs without a doubt. If you don't accept the rules, jsut do not participate the tournaments. That is easy and not disappointing for all.
He did accept lol. He took the penalty and said he was sorry and that he'd change the next day seeing as there was only one game left to play. It was FIDE that pressed the issue and made a big deal about it. Many players that were there have verified that.

If there are set rules, everyone should obey it. They can discuss the need for change of rules after tournament. He is the GOAT but throwing tantrums while losing is damaging his reputation.
To be fair, he's proven himself to be the greatest of all time, without any doubt... The guy lost his mother not long ago, and yet continues to dominate like a beast... he's the paragon of the quintessential champion/greatest of all time. I'll give him a pass even if he's in the wrong in this situation, that's for sure.
Magnus was in 41st with a performance rating in the 2500s when he withdrew. Carlsen was also completely lost in some games where he was gifted with draws, he was playing terribly.
Magnus throws a tantrum again. This could have been resolved amicably. Nevertheless, no one individual is above the sport. Rules are for everyone. A few players were already fined and warned; they all complied. The dress code were in fact instituted by the players. In general, the game of Chess will always find another super talent in the near future.

If the fide lets him go with a simple reprimand everyone else will say fide is taking commercial considerations into account and going soft on their most popular player even though with other players they have taken a hardline in the past/ this tournament. Other players will have started complaining and so will the media. So in my mind correct decision. It just puts them in a bad situation where one party or the other will blame them.
Lets be honest. Fide is one big circus and is run by bunch of clowns. Magnus is 10x bigger than Fide and I can see this only harming Fide in the long run. Also what is point of fining people if you are going to disqualify/not pair them? Total clown fiesta.
@@rakeshs7463but the game is bigger than Fide technically Also I think Magnus being fined is dumb but I think the dress code is 👍. Magnus should have just changed his pants tbh, but he wants to hurt Fide so it's alright.
It is not a circus just think about it the organisation gives players in remote areas to compete in this game with the best of they are good. Free style might be a good idea for a few players but it will not give chance to everyone around the world. It will just be a circle jerk off top Players who will be invited.
i just can't understand! is it a rule given before the tournament begin? or right at the moment that's why he run out of suit on day 9? Because if it is given ahead, i don't know what to think. First, yeah, the rule on not wearing jeans is somehow shallow, but on the other hand, is it that too difficult to follow too? Second, we know he is the greatest as of now, that is not debatable, but should the rules be adjusted just because you are of great importance? I think if the FIDE considered him playing with jeans, some players might break some rules too and they have to forgive them to be fair with less "popular" players, and all the rules will become nonsense. Should people of great value really have the right to break rules and be forgiven just because they are VIP? When you know that you are a VIP, can't you be a little humble to follow the rule first above anyone for the less "valuable" people to respect the organization too? Is it wrong for the organization to stick with their rules and impose it to anyone, may it be their greatest figure and may cause them to fall? sorry.. i just don't know how i feel right now.
i think it's more of people are mad because of how fide did this. Fide could've just fined him per round in jeans. People are also mad at how strict dress code is considering it's chess. Yes the rule was given ahead and some fault does fall on Magnus for also not changing his clothes before the round, however the over the top regulation and strictness against Magnus was what caused this. Also no need to be sorry you have your own opinions :)
Magnus did say, that he agreed to change it the next day. But officials wanted him to change then and there itself. It's a silly rule, if you are forcing the olayer to change there itself before the round. Then what is fine for? Then force the player to change and don't fine. Because the player never broke the dress code during the match if you already made him change.
@@ChessCafe-il3odbut he knew it even before the tournament began? why not bring clothes good for one month event if the event is good for one month? why did he still choose to join from the very start if he thinks the rules are lame?
@lara-9884 he knew about the rules and if you see his interview on take take take. He was cautious about his shoes and other stuffs, but didn't even think about the jeans and that could be a potential inappropriate dress code. It was fine up until then. And he had asked that he would change it tomorrow and wss okay if they keep fining him for the rest of the games. But they asking him to go back, change his pants and then again come back to play another round, that is what triggered him. And i guess it has happened for good. Even Nepo said that in the tournament there are multiple people not following dress code, but the strict rules are only for the top players. And IMO these rules are crap.
What is very clear from the interview Magnus gave on Take Take Take followed by another interview with this CEO is that the events and interactions of today CANNOT be seen in isolation but recent events and interactions with FIDE, Freestyle Chess, and players such as Hikaru and Magnus also need to be taken into consideration. Hiding behind "this is just about dress code" is intellectually insulting to fans of the game. I also am VERY disappointed in the lack of quality mediation between the two sides concerning this and PARTICULARLY disappointed in the (IMHO) way this CEO in that interview tried to suggest Magnus has acted like a prima dona. Chess is joining esports next year and a bit more diplomacy was required at this critical time. There is a lot more to this methinks!
If magnus wanted mediation, he would've tried to at least adhere to rules after being warned which he didn't. He doesn't want mediation, he wants all of chess to revolve around him and his idea of a tournament. Also the fact he wasn't playing well from the start to just to now withdraw is very pretentious.
In round 7 they inform Magnus about the Jeans and fined 200 USD. In round 8 Magnus did not changed so, they provide him opportunity to change it before the starting of round or suspension of round 9, Magnus did not change it and used word: 'principles in the argument. Once I could accept but the real problem is not about the dress code here. One private organization 'Free style chess' asked for the FIDE partition directly into World championship (not researched but - direct admission to World championship such as Grand chess tour. And, want to force the play style in chess championship. Some of their demands didn't accepted by the FIDE, and that why Magnus is creating Drama. It's between the arrogance of person hide behind the word 'priciples'.
When you understand you can't just win, you leave the tournament creative some drama. It's better to die a hero rather than to see yourself becoming a loser.
Bro even I thought this😅...but if calsen creates the drama for accepting the loss is somewhat couldn't believe, because in 2024 if magnus played, he won all the tournaments.
For me, Magnus is right, he said that he want to change his jeans tomorrow, but the arbiter said that he need to changed right now which magnus don't like becoz the tournament started already.
Instead of Asking MAGNUS to change his Jeans ... They should have asked HiM get a Longer Shirt or Tuck it in to Hide those Cracks. I don't think that's very professional especially, when little girls are around You. Have some decency. However, They asked him the WRONG thing and got hit in the foot lol
Reading most of the comments here, it sounds as if Magnus didn't have much of a chance to retain his Rapid championship this time, so he got himself kicked out of the tournament so he wouldn't have to face losing it. Right or wrong, FIDE has its rules and if you're not prepared to adhere to them, don't play.
Some players were also violating the dress code but they weren't warned. As nepo said, if fide really followed the dess codes then something like 40 players would have been warned.
Magnus finds it extremely difficult to deal with losses. FIDE already makes several special provisions for him considering his stature. But he has grown to misunderstand this leeway as an entitlement rather than a privilege. This had to happen some time. I applaud FIDE for ensuring that all players are treated equally during tournaments.
It's understandable why Magnus didn't want to change before the next round. They are not in highschool. As Magnus said he is too old for this.Too accomplished. What I don't understand is why most people blame Magnus for this. If you were in his shoes, would you do differently
I am wondering if he is becoming a rebel without a cause? I do hear a lot of comments about FIDE being the kind of organisation it is but my curiosity is what is the issue on which Magnus has a disagreement with them? From what I understand, it focusses on his personal benefits, he doesnt seem to bother about the game of chess and its future. What he is focused on is what he likes and wants to do. His fight is purely personal. He gives a damn about others or a cause! So we might think the rules are nonsense and cheer him for standing up for something he believes, lets not be under any misconception that this belief is anything but only for himself!
I agree. If a player on board 60 was unpaired for wearing jeans, Magnus wouldn’t give one you-know-what, and certainly wouldn’t withdraw from the tournament on that player’s behalf in solidarity.
What is happening may not be because of 'jeans'. It may be because of Fide's disappointment with Magnus' advocacy for freestyle chess(proposed by Bobby Fischer). Fide is not ready for freestyle chess yet.
Now people with endless time will find shiet of Emils past and im here for it… next few weeks we will find out he grouped a kid or something.. this is fun :)
The no jeans rule is silly. There is no doubt that the majority of the players share the same feeling. However they all (including Nepo) complied with this silly rule. But Magnus’s ego won’t allow it. He was looking for a reason to leave the tournament ( where he is playing badly compared to his standards) and also to promote his freestyle chess. Look what he did to Hans Niemann when he lost a game against him. Chess is not dead without Magnus and his alter ego. There are great players out there playing more entertaining chess than Magnus. Arjun, Dubov, Murzin and Duda are just examples. I hope people talk more about the great chess being played in New York and not about one man’s ego.
Ppl need to understand we have different culture playing chess and every1 needs to agree on 1 dress code which is not offensive to any culture. Once dress code is decided, every 1 must follow that. However, i agree casual jeans should be fine as it doesn’t offend anyone. I am surprised why didnt they put jeans in the allow dress code list. Strange
This clarifies what's going on. So, it's basically about creating "Parallel Chess Federation" by Magnus. Now I understand why Magnus said that Classical Chess/World Championship is a "Circus", and now he is trying to put FIDE Rapid/Blitz into bad limelight. Magnus basically trying to take FIDE down to create his own "Parallel Chess Federation".
This is not about the pants. It's been a long time in the making. Magnus had a lot of issues with Fide and he is simply rebelling. Fide is in a catch 22. They have to implement the rules and cannot exempt one person because he is the number one player in the world. Like all other professional sports the players should have a union to raise these type of matters with the governing body.
Magnus is not above the rule ,, rules applies to all equally,, Magnus should respect it . If he becomes FIDE president then he can change whatever rule he like but until he is a player then he is not above the game .
It is not about the rule... it is about the punishment above the line! He apologized and said would change it in another day with only one game left! They could just continously fine him per game if he doesn't change... Also FIDE was too harsh... none of the players were complaining about Magnus... they were the ones who made a big deal about it...
Enough to change his pants. The venue was a 3-minute walk, and he had his team around. he could have asked them to bring his pants. Even his girlfriend was there and could get him a pair if he really WANTED to follow the rules of fide. If he wants to be the one to bring a change (maybe he knows fide politics, unlike us commoners), then he has to do it in a tactful way with patience. This looks wrong to 90% of the public and players. He comes across as egotistic and unreasonable to many in this fiasco.
0:53 - actually, its just vice verse, its a matter of principles for stupid FIDE managers. There are not many things in the world which are less unimportant than wearing a jeans in a chess competition (which is not a dress competition). FIDE should think about what is more important, having the best players playing or having the best suited players playing. It should be a pretty easy case....
Carlsen knew the rules but still broke it. If not for pants, he would have come with something else. He wants to make freestyle and his enterprise with the German businessman the mainstream and make millions. He doesn't care for chess or for others. Fide for all its faults, is doing a job of conducting tournaments reasonably well. FIDE ia important for players who are not in the select group of Carlsen. Without FIDE their careers will be over. People should think how destrictive all this will be for players and chess federations. No wonder Carlsen is the student of Kasparov, both of whom follow the same pattern.
Fide isn’t giving people careers. That’s the issue. Chess players make their own careers and all Fide does is hinder them as much as possible. There’s no money in chess unless you’re in the top ten. That’s the problem Magnus and Hikaru are trying to solve.
@lobsterboy8148 yeah, by creating a private group with German businessman which only invites handful players...great. Fide is creating tournaments that at least give chance for hundreds of players to participate. Carlsen will only promote freestyle and have only select group. It is a private enterprise.
Same as in Golf. You can't wear shorts on PGA or DPW. And therefore we have LIV now. Dress codes are everywhere, but it beats me why there is such a code in Chess.
Magnus had a special chill out room between rounds during the last FIDE world Rapid and Blitz cup. No other player had such a privilege which definitely gave him an advantage. It's very logical that Magnus demands a special treatment this time too. The whole thing this time is about the money around the Freestyle/Fisher chess world cup which Magnus doesn't want to share with FIDE. Otherwise FIDE would stuck their own rules into their own ... the same way they always did to have the sponsorship attracted by the most famous player. Another great thing is that Winners of the previous woman cup in both blitz and rapid didn't manage to get visas thanks to the great choice of the venue (USA sanctions half of the world these days). And FIDE DOEN'T CARE! Shame on this organisation of the hypocrites!
He was 5/8 catching up with other he was disqualified in round 9.He would easily be 6/9 and the first position one is at 7/9 so very little diffrence I am sure in next 4 round he would have catch up the first position guy and won WRC
People are saying Magnus doesnt need FIDE but FIDE needs Magnus.... This is absoulutely not true even with Magnus not playing the World Championship FIDE was able to be Google as a Sponsor so I dont think this is true
They think they can make an example out of him, but they will become the example when chess becomes more popularised without their involvement, FIDE is literally HOLDING BACK the potential growth of the game, Chess. This dress code bullshit is a big blunder, horrible rule, W Magnus.
They fined Nepo earlier in the event for dress code. Therefore they had to apply the same rule to Magnus. Simple. The players know the rules before the event starts. We have 3 things here: a) Magnus is pissed anyway as he is having a bad event b) he is now involved with promoting freestyle chess so is clashing with FIDE as we heard c) he has long tried to exert influence over FIDE anyway (such as with the Classical World Championship having shorter time controls) Does Magnus think he is bigger than the game?
Rule is for everyone not only for magnus. He already knew the dress code rules from the beginning but now acting like rules should change for him. If he can't respect the game and its rules then the community will not accept him as well. As simple as that 👍
A fine would have been sufficient ... he was willing to play round 9 if they allow him to play ... either you raise this issue in round 5 or you keep your mouth shut up.

bad tournament? he always starts bad. today he scored 2.5/3, most likely would have ended 3.5/4 by the day's end. It would be very foolish to count him out with still 5 rounds remaining. he has previously won from worse positions.
FIDE is 100% wrong here. “Rules are rules” is a lame excuse for their authoritarian behavior. They could have just fined Magnus and let him play. Magnus agreed to pay the fine and he said he will dress properly from tommorrow. Instead, FIDE treated Magnus like a child and told him to go his hotel room right now to change pants. That’s very insulting way to treat anyone, let alone a top professional like Magnus.
Magnus is great talent and should be respected I think he needs special treatment His absence in chess circuits will have irreparable damage Administrators .please solve the problem with tact and special consideration
He is already treated differently lol. Always plays at the number 1 table for one. Has his own lounge etc. Fide took a stand that they are going to regret here. Magnus Carlsen isnt bigger than chess, but he is bigger than FIDE.
FIDE is absolutely correct in this. It tries it bests to take care of every players and I feel if there are not such struggle put in front of it it will help to popularize chess in much better way then it already does.
Excellent interview! I hope FIDE may be more flexible abour dresses code, and I hope Magnus do not get so emotional to express insults, and to see his relations with FIDE as a war. He es the greatest chess player I have seen, but also he needs to behave properly.
Really? Why should he have special privileges? What is the problem in wearing proper suit to an official game? In Wimbledon they don’t even allow spectators inside if they don’t adhere to a specific dress code. Players can be thrown out if they wear anything not white. There are restaurants in the world that don’t allow people in if they don’t adhere to specific dress codes. Why would an international game event be questioned if they ask players to have a dress code? It’s such a minor thing. Magnus may be greatest chess player ever but if he can’t agree to bare minimums it’s not a good thing and shows he is getting arrogant and doesn’t care about basic things. Players getting bigger than sport is not good!

Laughable

Hiding behind "this is just about dress code" is intellectually insulting to fans of the game. He doesn’t have to prove shit. He is #1 player in the world in all formats
So if you are wearing jeans u will not be pairing in the next round sounds fair to you?
Magnus finds it extremely difficult to deal with losses. FIDE already makes several special provisions for him considering his stature. But he has grown to misunderstand this leeway as an entitlement rather than a privilege. This had to happen some time. I applaud FIDE for ensuring that all players are treated equally during tournaments.
How much money have you put towards sponsoring FIDE? I know it’s zero because only someone without money in the pot would say this

@@HarshalRuikar FIDE doesn't even fined some other players. Broken organisation
Let's see who prevails FIDE or Magnus, will FIDE survive without Magnus or the other way around? Kasparov and Short did the same thing.
It's understandable why Magnus didn't want to change before the next round. They are not in highschool. As Magnus said he is too old for this.Too accomplished. What I don't understand is why most people blame Magnus for this. If you were in his shoes, would you do differently
I expected Carlsen to be thrown out for his hair cut but I didn't see that coming ...
Rules are for everyone alike, Kudos to Sutovsky for making that clear.
Anybody can have the World Champion title. It's not yours, FIDE.
If there were more Toga Chess tournaments this wouldn't happen
The only thing I hear Ewmil saying is "bla bla bla..."
INDIA IS THE FUTURE OF MASSIVE CHESS EDUCATION
Magnus seems to act out when he's not playing well
Subtitles please ❤
FIDE don't own the word "World Championship". What a ridiculous request for other tournament not to call themselves that
Yeah my thought too.
Anyone who thinks this is about jeans ais clueless about what is happening in chess
Also we need to know how long did Magnus have to go and change his pants before next round?
Can i wear yarmulke at the chess table?
Magnus the Diva
Dress codes are everywhere, but it beats me why there is such a code in Chess.
speaking of dress code, Emil needs a doo-over.... Magnus actually looked a lot better....yes, a comb would help! 8-)
Maybe carlsen was loosing that's why he came up with this idea
FIDE only cares about having all of the power in the chess world. They don't own the World Championship name.
FIDE should just fine him and let him focus how to comeback from bad day 1
I don't understand why Fide did so much drama about this... the players wasn't concerned about that...
@@brenosantos4756 its a rule, if you cannot follow don't participate.
How is Sutovsky giving an interview without wearing a tie, given the issue in question???
Because it is not part of the dress coed and he isn't playing in the tournament. Are u slow or normal
Rule: Jeans are Generally not ok. Reacting by practically disqualifying Magnus based on this Vague Definition is a massive power trip by FIDE.
They fined Nepo earlier in the event for dress code. Therefore they had to apply the same rule to Magnus. Simple. The players know the rules before the event starts. We have 3 things here:
a) Magnus is pissed anyway as he is having a bad event
b) he is now involved with promoting freestyle chess so is clashing with FIDE as we heard
c) he has long tried to exert influence over FIDE anyway (such as with the Classical World Championship having shorter time controls)
Does Magnus think he is bigger than the game?
Rule is for everyone not only for magnus. He already knew the dress code rules from the beginning but now acting like rules should change for him. If he can't respect the game and its rules then the community will not accept him as well. As simple as that 👍
Understandable why Rapport isn’t playing
Magnus is just pissed that he is having a bad tournament. Diversion tactic imo
I guess you didn't watch superbet tournament
A fine would have been sufficient ... he was willing to play round 9 if they allow him to play ... either you raise this issue in round 5 or you keep your mouth shut up.
41st place after 8 rounds with a performance rating in the 2500s. Definitely a distraction, similar to when he accused Nieman of cheated and withdrew from the St. Louis tournament
@@edwarda9403 Jeez you don't have to reach that far to tell that this is just a case of a guy being annoyed ans is already having a bad time.
Some throw hands, some argue screaming, he just happen to be the guy that gtfo pissed.
bad tournament? he always starts bad. today he scored 2.5/3, most likely would have ended 3.5/4 by the day's end.
Magnus is great talent and should be respected I think he needs special treatment His absence in chess circuits will have irreparable damage
Administrators .please solve the problem with tact and special consideration
Should he have been treated differently just because he is magnus?
Would magnus have behaved differently if he were not magnus?
Like the philosophy
He must behave differently, if he was in the lead position of the tournament.
It's not about pants. It's about freestyle stuff
@@RAHULJAMWALreachedBoth him and his enemy had a shirt. Magnus gray, enemy white. The enemy had pants , magnus had jeans.
he looked respectable. Sure he should've respected the rules but F them rules, so dumb. Deducting points for jeans LMAO . Deduction of money make more sense.
@@RAHULJAMWALreachedMan! It is not about the rule! It is about the desproportional punishment!
He apologized and said it would change clothes the next day... with only one game left!
They could just fine him continously if he doesn't change yet... instead of kicking him out!
None of the players were complaining about Magnus... it was the arbiter who made a big deal out of it...
Maybe fide should also have some formal trousers handy next time if someone has this issue
😂
Dresscode is very important for players 👏
It is understandable that the rule is same for everyone, including Magnus. But the ruleis stupid to be honest
Yeah but it is not created just to bring down the Magnus, Magnus should have participated and criticized the rule, both things could be done together
Magnus has a case of hurt ego, but totally understandable after such an unreasonable move. He might have or might not have lost his title in the tournament if there wasnt an intervention by the arbiter. But the way they handled this couldnt have been more stupid. Deducting one point for such a small issue is definitely overstepping. Funny though how Magnus immediately took the opportunity to run out of the competition so that he can keep up his facade of being larger than human
Ok i understand now, so magnus is saying championship title is mine coz i earned it so i can use. Fide says its their organisation title so they hold thd rights to it.
Is this a championship or a fashion parade?
Why doesn't FIDE make a uniform from clothes, pants, to shoes for the players? If given a sanction, it would be unfair, this dress code regulation really limits people's freedom of expression
