Now both sides are not backing down.. I believe this will be the end of the relationship between Magnus Carlsen and FIDE..
I understand that they don't want to be accused of applying a different set of rules to Magnus compared to everyone else but generally they just seem stuck in the past in a world where the audience expects to see players in suits looking unrelatable and the whole thing seeming very formal. They need to get beyond this because it's not the future of chess, it's the past. If they want it to grow they need to move with the times and what the contemporary audience wants to see and cares about.

A sweater is absolutely acceptable attire in an office. It wouldn't fly for, say, a lawyer in court...but neither would a polo shirt or a bunch of advertisements on your clothing.
So what's your point? A sweater not flying for a lawyer in court is also an arbitrary decision. The point is, if there is a dress code in place and the players sign up to the dress code, then they should stick to it. If they don't like the dress code, then don't agree to play. If you think the dress code is unreasonable, that is a separate issue. Once you have signed up to it, you lose your right to violate it without consequence.
How can a shirt with 7386 logos on it is more appropriate and formal than a simple sweater or jean? They literally say outfit at 9:10 is more acceptable than Ian's sweater at 9:40 and I think they are doing this on purpose to milk these geniuses and monetize their fame with drama they deliberately create.

FIDE has 17 million euro budget and they only succeed in generating useless FIDE arena which is overpriced and useless compared to lichess. They could have used lichess codebase and kept it uncommercial and had a refined platform with official FIDE tournaments, instead they made a bad platform noone wants to play on. they have been useless in past years selling off commercial rights and the numerous scandals when it comes to their handling of players is well documented. they have a vice president who has called a GM a "gypsy" for wearing short pants at a tournament and made some female players cry plus cheated at the european championship by retracting a move.

The FIDE dress code for players at the World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships requires "business casual" attire, which generally means long trousers or pants, a shirt, and a jacket. T-shirts, polo shirts, jeans, sports shoes, sneakers, slippers, and hats are not allowed, except for religious reasons. National costumes and team uniforms are permitted. My religion is wearing jeans.
I've played chess kinda professionally from age 7 to 16, visiting tournaments around my country and etc. And I was from a pretty poor family. Chess was always good because you need a chessboard with pieces and that's it. And of course 99% of kids were wearing freaking jeans at the tournaments! Why they promote this elititism in chess now, i have zero idea.
Seriously, this is not the Opera or the Ballet. Why not have a recommended dress code, but having compulsory dress code for a chess tournament is just silly. And a chess tournament these days without Magnus is like having bread without butter. One can almost choke on it.
Not allowing him to participate in the last round is a step too far. Magnus' actions are definitely not defendable, as Ian did indeed conform to the rules and Magnus didn't. But to not allow people to participate due to this? Bruh. He should have just been penalized in some form after the fact. Such trivialities should never affect the games, ever.
This fide CEO is an idiot.... It reminds me of a kid... He didn't deny Ghiri and Ian claims that at the bottom of the pack there are indeed players that have broken the dressing code aswell and nothing was told to them... This guy's answer? The top players have more responsibilities?? Because they are on camera??? Im sorry mate, but this looks like a witch hunt... I bet he feels good about what just happened.
The fact that players cannot play in tournaments named "World Championship" is crazy monopolistic behaviour, I don't know if that's common practice but to me it seems so manipulative.
Arguably one of the more attractive chess players being kicked either because he didn't look good enough for their standards or because they were jealous he was rocking those jeans like a rockstar.
I get that you don't want favouritism but jeans are acceptable attire in many professional offices, and ultimately chess (especially blitz) is a sport, players need to be comfortable. Also, I've always thought this rule just added to the elitism of chess. If you're not financially well off you're already struggling to afford to go to tournaments, it's not fair to make people dress a certain way too. Let's also add that a suit is western clothing. As we want to grow the sport globally, surely we want to be inclusive of alternative attire, the biggest growing markets for chess are India and China, players should be allowed to dress in their own country's attire if that's what they want to do.
For everyone whining about Magnus being stubborn or thinking he’s bigger than the game - It’s called taking a stand. There was nothing wrong with his attire.
Except that rule was there for a century and magnus knew it well beforehand so he decided to do this on purpose after having one of his worst performances and he decided to switch the story
@@emmbee6711 that stand should have been taken by not participating in the event after reading the rules and clearly making your point that you will not participate unless the rules are changed..doing it mid of the tournament doesn’t looks good and gives a feeling that he thinks himself bigger than the game..if all other 300 odd players can wear formals then why can’t he

FIDE is upset the most dominant chess player of the current era, doesn’t want to play the classic world championship. This is where it all stems from, they refuse to open their minds to change.
FIDE made a mistake but they are not wrong. The problem is with the rules and the players too easily agreeing with the rules when they enter these tournaments. It's like user agreements., they are just lucky they don't live in South Park. Also, the FIDE CEO was basically calling Magnus a diva.
It was Carlsen who had the "I can do whatever I want." attitude. FIDE proposed a relaxed version of the 2018 dress code, nobody complained, and after that as a player you just comply, end of story.
@@coolcat23 Carlsen was annoyed and in my opinion rightfully so. He was already fined. @RustyNPiece The rule isn't there to generate income through fines. The rule is intended to ensure a standard of appearance. One cannot achieve the intent of the rule by simply fining people. It would be morally problematic to use rules to generate money rather than actually enforcing them.

@@coolcat23 The rule isn't there to effectively prohibit players from winning tournaments, too. But that's not really the point. The point is how you want to enforce the rules and get compliance. You could still have enforced the rule by understanding that interrupting a player's rapid tournament to go change clothes is disproportionate to the desired outcome and be satisfied that the player shows up the next day in "proper" attire. In this situation a subsequent fine just signals that although the clothes were deemed inappropriate there is more at stake here and players, spectators, investors as well as chess as a whole benefit more from the number 1 player playing than from him leaving.
Magnus was fined 200 dollars and they also told him to dress like a child or they wouldn't let him play anymore. My first reaction was that this is a ridiculous enforcement of the rules. But hearing the arguments from the president, I can understand their stance as well. Magnus had enough time to change, he just didn't want to be told what to do by Fide. You don't change the rules on the spot because one of the favourites decides not to adhere by them.

There is a dress code in the tournament, you are playing the tournament, follow the dress code. You don't want to comply, you are disqualified. It seems logical to me.
It is but there being a dress code that forbids jeans is ridiculous. Also why is it not enough to change for the next day? Leave it at a fine. If you want fine him every game but don’t affect the chess.
I really dont care who is wearing what, but rule is rule. It is written before the tournaument is started. And the penalty is defined clearly. But again, rule is rule! I find a lot rules are silly but, I am following them. If you have problem with the rules, obey them first and then after critize them, blame them, sue them. It cannot be changed becuse of a person.
I don’t care what the FIDE have to say about this because forbidding wearing jeans is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever seen in my entire life!! I can’t believe they put it in the regulation.
Love Magnus but he knew the rules. He did this on purpose because of his behind the scenes row with FIDE. If Nepo changed, he could have done the same. He wanted to create problems at the games in order to justify breaking away from FIDE. He did not want to play from the get go. Magnus needs to do better in terms of setting example for younger players. Having said all this, FIDE should not be preventing players from playing freestyle chess.
That whole _"we welcome more competitions for players, you just can't call it a 'world championship'"_ bit doesn’t seem right to me... having a contract with players that says _"I agree not to compete in any event that calls itself a 'world championship' for 4 years after my last FIDE event"_ (as said @ 21:35 ) sounds like a corporate non-compete clause you'd find in an _employment_ contract, not a competition entry agreement. And I’ve never heard an employer successfully enforcing more than 12-18 months of a non-compete clause, let alone a professional association trying to limit a player’s competitive career _for 4 years_ once they are no longer a member… that seems like a pretty egregious & unenforceable over-reach by FIDE. I get the feeling that hubris will be FIDE’s Achilles heel... because the relationship between sponsors, the public & the players in the digital age of the 2020's is completely different to the institutional dependency when the PCA split off in the 90's. And when FIDE's chosen broadcast technology wasn't working on day one, but grandmasters are regularly & reliably streaming games online for larger audiences... combined with this frankly ridiculous dress code situation... FIDE isn't doing professional chess or their own reputation any favours.
FIDE doesn’t want Magnus to win another World Rapid Championship. How can they expect Magnus to not withdraw from the championship if they’re going to ban him from playing Round 9? In this situation a subsequent fine just signals that although the clothes were deemed inappropriate there is more at stake here and players, spectators, investors as well as chess as a whole benefit more from the number 1 player playing than from him leaving.
Magnus was fined 200 dollars and they also told him to dress like a child or they wouldn't let him play anymore. I don’t care what the FIDE have to say about this because forbidding wearing jeans is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever seen in my entire life!! I can’t believe they put it in the regulation.
Do you see it in the regulations? Because I do not.
Magnus, like Kasparov before him is finding out chess is bigger than them.
Where do you see this actual rule? I can't find it anywhere on FIDE's site. Their dress code says no torn jeans, among other rules.
This is what this entire issue is about. Thank you.
Who needs FIDE anyway?
Not the general public. We just want entertainment. We don't care about official player ratings. Fide is stuck in the past.
They should probably check the players before they enter the venue.
So they everytime a different players becomes champion they gonna change format of play or they'll not play?

Moment is 7:18
We are with Magnus!!! No more watching this tournament....
What we all came here for.
FIDE doesn’t want Magnus to win another World Rapid Championship. How can they expect Magnus to not withdraw from the championship if they’re going to ban him from playing Round 9? It’s gonna be very difficult to have a fighting chance to win if he is disqualified from playing a round. So obviously Magnus had no choice but to withdraw.
