- (Part 2) The characters of the DC Universe have been adapted many different times of the course of the last 80 years and they don't always do a good job. In this video I'll be talking about who 20 of the worst adaptations of DC's biggest characters.

That whole scene is goated and just gets Batman like no other live action adaptation does. Batman & Robin is atrocious, but that scene is great. Sadly, it's buried beneath all of the awful, or quoting Clooney's Batman "buried, deep... beneath the snow".

Then the actor got the role he wanted in the show "Power", so he exited *Arrow* after taking a nasty beating from Brick.

8:53 Batwoman Croc was even worse. He bit a kid, was shot dead and the kid became another Croc from the bite. So he was more infection than character.
Croc didn't even bit the kid, Batman had just kept a big teeth that he knocked out of Waylon Jones, and then when his trophies were thrown into the river, the kid found it cut himself with it or something.
Anyway, yeah that Croc didn't look great from my memories...
At least Suicide Squad Killer Croc had extremely good make-up work and the actor was imposing.
Oh my god, Batwoman did all kinds of goofy sh*t with characters, the most egregious was "Joker" (which technically wasn't Joker) in the final season. if you haven't seen the show and you feel like dying inside look it up on youtube. EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER IN THAT SHOW WAS COMPLETELY BUTCHERED!!!

God, I want a good live action adaptation of Robin so bad. I’d love it if a sequel to The Batman involved Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne having to deal with the fact that he’s suddenly responsible for a 10-year-old. I think if they wrote and cast Robin well, with a good mix of Dick Grayson’s excitement and enthusiasm as well as his more serious/angry moments grieving for the loss of his parents, it could actually be a really good contrast to Pattinson’s Batman and really cool to see. Of course the important part would be getting everything right so that the character doesn’t come off as annoying to the adult audience lol

Definitely agree about the Titans characters as there was no reason for Beast Boy's actor to not be painted green and only turn into a tiger. Still not as bad as the black goo girl pretending to be Raven and how Starfire along with her sister are so far from their original characters that they're better off being original characters. Which is interesting, since they easily could've been twin alien princesses with pyro powers, something that would fit far better than the Tameranians being walking flamethrowers out of nowhere.

3:45 Comic and Arkham Zsaaz are creepy as hell but Birds of Prey Zsasz was a generic hitman.
Ti his credit, I didn't hate his design... the messy scars were a bold change I guess, the blonde hair from his first incarnation was a nice touch.
The hitman thing seems like have started to Batman:Begins, and then *Gotham* did a great job with him that Batwoman got heavily inspired by...
I just wish Chris Messina had had some more lines/scenes to flesh out his character, same for Black Mask.

with John Blake, he could've easily passed as Dick Grayson as he is a cop and he goes on to become Nightwing, or its alluded too at the end of TDKR and also it would've made sense with the relationship he had with Batman. Or they could've just done what the Arkham series did and just make Robin a 20 something year old man (Tim Drake in the Arkham games is not under the age of 20 and you cannot change my mind)

For Starfire, i think she is much closer to her new tt characterization in the 1980s
Her powers were orange, red or magneta during her original appearance but the tt cartoon changed it to green so they adapted that into other cartoons and comics too
I'm glad they made her tougher unlike the TT cartoons were she's so naive and just such an insult to who Starfire is
Exactly people worship blindly the animated thinking it's the most faithful version and get pissed if it ain't green when that version is insulting to comic fans and the creators during Dragon con 2018 I asked George Perez what he thought of animated Starfire he told me he hated her.He then ask me what I thought of Anna version that had recently been revealed in comic con trailer he also didn't like Anna's version due to that trailer I said I would give it a chance since she's my favorite character of all time followed by Batman and Spiderman but no enduring slavery which defines her determination to be a free person it's really important to her comic personality.
Fans also appearantly haven't seen The New Teen Titans 1980 issue 1 cover which has her firing yellow starbolts.
honestly I buy her as that version of starfire as far as I know the only reason people don’t like her is because she doesn’t particularly look like starfire which is bullshit because she’s actually a good character and I like how she’s not like a clueless infant like she is in tt or ttg
The worst insult the animated series did was the fact that from a complex character she was changed into a basic fish out of water character that had been done billions of times.I haven't seen many characters like her incredible comic version in fiction also the rejection the sister went through until becoming a great queen was incredible she was like Garra from Naruto that hated his village became a villain becomes friend with Naruto then becomes Kazekage and gains the respect village that's the character that is most similar to Komand'r journey and how writers should write her character at least in one adaptation.

I didn’t like Jason Todd/Red Hood potrayal in Titans.
Titans Dick Grayson was just a bad version of Jason Todd with Dick's name before they brought in the actual Jason.
Even though Eva McCulloch wasn’t a very good Mirror Master, The Flash has its own adaptation of Sam Scudder’s one, and while he isn’t a main villain, he does have one episode where he traps Barry in a mirror, and in contrast to the mirror dimension Iris is trapped in s6, this one is a black dimension, which looks terrifying to me, it seems like a good little taste of his powers.

Tommy Lee Jones would've been a perfect two face if he'd played him as the stern and serious straight man to balance out against Riddler's campiness. Instead he was so obsessed with trying to keep up with Jim Carrey, he just played him as a hammy, weird discount Joker. He didn't even really care about the movie to begin with and only did it for his son because two face was his favourite Batman character. His performance in the movie manages to feel both phoned in and wildly over the top at the same time
Ik mr freeze is a bad adaptation I still have a soft spot for Arnold’s version just because of the amount of genuine fun you can tell he’s having with it

Honestly, although I don’t mind Robin in the dark Knight rises, I never understood the point of connecting him to the character if you’re not going to make him the boy wonder.
Besides would Robin really be that out of place in this universe? Just give them a costume similar to Tim drake in Arkham city and I’m sure it would work just fine.
Either way, if they wanted to connect him to Robin but still not give him the costume, they could’ve just named him Dick Grayson or something like that.

Batman and Robin is one of those films that' is acceptable to crap on, so much so that not many people actually give reasons as to why it's bad.
Vigilante in Pacemaker is another example of one being a good character but a bad adaptation of the source material
I disagree I actually think Vigilante is the best part of Peacemaker. His personality may be different but it’s still a good adaptation.

I will say with Starfire that her personality is pretty true to her early appearances. Starfire was a very aggressive and violent warrior when she's first introduced. Titans has a lot of writing issues but I dont think Starfire's personality is one of them.
Her starbolts also largely appear pink red and/or orange in comics. The green bolts really only came post Teen Titans cartoon. The appearance of her powers really come down to personal tastes. For me, she looked much cooler when her powers matched the flame effect of her hair.
I will agree that Titans' version is unrecognizable appearance-wise as Starfire but she's not really a bad adaptation of her source material.

to her comic origins it's my favorite origin although it would have been better if the story was in real time instead of her telling it to the Titans years after the events had happened.It has been my life dream to see this version adapted an expanded on live action,pg13 or R animated movie has a dude I found her strong will to never break and keep being herself no matter how incredibly hard her life was being born into a 100 year war being sold a slave being trick by parents to returning to Tamaran only to force her to marry someone she didn't love being assaulted by Raven during her later wedding with Dick captured and experimented by Wildebeest society force to endure the tortures she received has a child by Roy Harper in Outsiders complete betrayal she shouldn't have told her origin to her friends since they used that against her a life like that would have a lesser person perpetually depressed or suicidal but she endures with a big smile and redefine her outfit from something dark into a positive that's who she was before new 52 in 2011 came and changed her origin and outfit that were perfect and a reason why they hadn't changed her since she was created in 1980.

Probably one of the worst adaptations I’ve seen would be deathstroke from Lois and Clark. The only similarities he has with the comic book character is the name and the fact he’s a mercenary. Instead of being a master fighter with an eyepatch, he’s essentially a magneto rip off in a generic gray suit.

I really don’t like the version of Renee Montoya in the Birds of Prey film. In the comics, she worked in the Gotham City Police Department as one of the only people on the force who wasn’t corrupt while also dealing with a stalker who exposed her as a lesbian in the early 2000’s. In the movie…she’s just upset that she doesn’t get the credit she believes she deserves, which isn’t nearly as interesting or investing. I like Rosie Perez in the role-I don’t agree with the criticism that she’s too old-but good acting cannot save bad writing.

Very hot take: Heath Ledger’s Joker should be on this list. I agree with everyone that he’s an amazing character and the dark knight is one of the best cbms ever, but if we’re talking as an adaptation, he fails. Joker doesn’t have a true origin story, but the most common one is that his skin is bleached that way, while in Heath Ledger’s version, it’s obviously makeup. He also doesn’t utilize any of Joker’s known arsenal outside of playing cards. There’s no poison shooting flowers, Joker fish, any stuff like that. The closest adaption we’ve probably had is Jack Nicholson. But Ledger is still amazing, just not accurate.

I remember being in middle school and seeing a vhs tape of Batman and Robin in my parent's room. I asked my stepdad if I could watch it and he told me no, it was made for adults so it would probably be much too scary for someone my age. I thought it was weird, as I was allowed to watch horror movies, but now I know it's because it was just a bad movie

The only redeeming features of Batman and Robin were the scenes between Bruce Wayne and Alfred. It took time, but not only have I been able to delete every other part of that film, but I've also overwritten those parts of the internal hard-drive to ensure they can never cause unpleasant flashbacks at inopportune moments.

Hot take: Snyder’s Superman. He acts nothing like Superman should act (kind, optimistic, hopeful) and is just not a good version of the character. I mean, Snyder had said that the objectivist philosopher Ayn Rand inspired the character, and she literally wrote a book called “Selfishness is a Virtue” and rejects altruism, something Superman stands for

(then, shit happened, but that initial fight was so good that it hooked a lot of people who were still a bit "eh" about the new GA show)

As for Beast Boy, he did only use his Tiger form early on and learnt how to turn into other animals later.
The Blockbuster on The Flash was Marcus Desmond. Marcus Desmond was the first Blockbuster and was the brother of Roland Desmond. Marcus never fought Nightwing, and was more of a dumb, brute character who was ordered around by his brother. Roland eventually took the syrum and became the second Blockbuster. He was able to retain his intelligence and became Nightwing's arch enemy. So you can't criticise The Flash's Blockbuster for not being like Roland Desmond Blockbuster, when it's not based on that version of Blockbuster.
I've been reading comics for years and didn't know this. It confounded me because I remember the first one being killed by Brimstone. Thanks.
@@joeparrigen4982 Yeah. Roland was eventually killed by Nightwing and Tarantula, and I think Marcus was later resurrected. So far only the Marcus Desmond version has ever been used in media outside of the comics.

Maybe mention Parallax in Green Lantern. In the comics it is an entity that possesses Hal Jordan and turns him into an evil destroyer so he’s pretty cool. In the movie he’s just some generic giant fart monster and nothing more. Why make him the main villain? I think Clancy Brown did his best but he couldn’t save the character

While I agree Tommy Lee Jones’ performance as Two-Face in Batman Forever IS awful, I would disagree that he wasn’t a good pick for the role. TLJ could’ve been an amazing Harvey Dent in a more serious movie
The biggest thing that always bothered me about Batman and Robin was the idea of Mr Freeze and Poison Ivy teaming up. Cold kills plants. Ivy should hate Freeze even more than Batman.
(A close second is that they made Bane a monosyllabic henchman.)
Lastly, Oliver Queen is really awful in almost every way. As far as I'm concerned one of the main things about Oliver is that he is super progressive to an aggressive and nearly offensive manner. But they even make him mayor and they don't make him particularly progressive and it makes no sense. That show started out great and it turned bad real quick. And pretty much every other show that followed was, kind of, worse. Although seasons 2 through 4 or so of Legends of Tomorrow, I thought, were fun.
Black lion ryan choi appeared in the earth prime tie in comics to the shows months ago so he is the atom in the normal timeline aswell

Ryan Choi was actually, for me, one of the better part of *Crisis* and really wanted to see more of him in costume...
But that shitty crossover *Armageddon* really wasted him.

In regards to Beast Boy, while I agree he did need a bigger budget for his powers I don’t mind that he isn’t green since his personality is pretty much how I expect the character to be like and he’s the most enjoyable character on the show. With Starfire, while I haven’t found the time to read the New Teen Titans comics that introduced her, I know the comic version was nothing like the cartoon version which I grew up watching. Based on your comments I’m guessing that’s also your frame of reference for the character, so saying an adaption was bad just because it wasn’t like another adaption doesn’t make much sense.
Bigger budget or more cleaver usage of relatively simple camera tricks. For example, show him lounging around their base or whatever ( haven't seen the show) as a house cat. Just film someone's pet and give it green tint in aftereffects. Make transformations happen as a silhouette, ect
I think with “Robin” in RISES, Nolan just wrote himself into a corner and had no idea how to get out
Titans. Beast boy is my fav. But I hate him on the show. Starfire in season 1 was awful and now she’s like my favorite character on the show. Same with raven. Her hair is on point now. And nightwing is awesome

I disagree with John Blake. I get he isn't actually Robin from the comics. I see it as a cool Easter egg. It wouldn't make sense to name him Dick Grayson, because most people who watched TDKR in the cinema have no idea who that is.
I hope we get a real Robin adaptation soon
Star fire is much more like her older comic counterpart than the newer takes on the character. Yes she’s not perfect in Titans but over all she’s not as terrible as everything thinks. They usually only think that because they saw the cartoon. Also Beast Boy can’t be green for medical reasons I believe. Also Brianiac 5 looked terrible so I’m fine with him looking normal.
Mr. Zsasz was adapted in the strangest way in Gotham. It was so inaccurate to the comics - he didn't even keep track of kills via scars! They turned him into a gunslinging hitman? What? And yet the very odd adaptation actually worked for me; he was one of my favorite characters in that show. Wonder if there are other characters who had inaccurate but still interesting adaptations on screen.
Pretty much everyone on Gotham fits "inaccurate but interesting adaptation". And frankly it all added up to a great (not) Batman show... much better than most of the Batman movies IMO.
Starfire and Beast Boy was a bad take, they’re just developing. Starfire was based off the original comics at first( shooting actual fire out her hands). But then she discovered her true power learning how to shoot plasma beams, the only reason why it’s Blue is because she hasn’t reached her full potential yet. The show producers already said that her powers will involve to different colors like yellow, orange, and red, then green. She’s just developing. Same for Beast Boy, in the comics he just started out with one animal, until he started learning he can transform into others slowly( he actually had to study that animal in order to turn into it), so they’re just developing. Calm down
The only thing Batman and Robin got right about Bane was the venom that made him stronger, but it still wasn't right.
Tim drake on the titans series is terrible, most of the time he's just there looking dumb and corny, he also looks stiff when fighting

Catwoman 2004 is one of those movies that has been so hated by some people, that others jumped on the bandwagon with no original thought on it. Yes they used a lot of unnecessary camera angles and the story isn't fully original, but it's definitely not as bad as it's been made out to be. Patience Philips is a pretty memorable character that embodies more cat qualities, than Selina Kyle ever did, which is why I like her take on the mantle of Catwoman.
It was a Catwoman film not set in Gotham with no Batman connection where it wasn't even Selina Kyle. Catwoman's just supposed to like cats and dress up as one not act like one.
