The little hints that David is used to playing modern versions of minecraft, like right clicking to equip armor or dragging items really add to this. He hasnt been playing beta for the past 10 years, refusing to play newer versions, he _chose_ to go back to beta. Maybe he wanted the simplicity of the old versions, maybe he was just nostalgic. This is reaching a bit, but I think something happened to David, something that made him turn to this old, nostalgic, _comforting_ version of minecraft. But then things start getting weirder and weirder, and he becomes more and more paranoid. The use of Calm4 in the cave was brilliant. It's such a weird, off-putting track on its own, but in this situation? It's an escape sequence track, and it's perfect for it. It's more energetic than the normal backing tracks, and in this situation, more frantic. 10/10

Reminds me of AndrewGaming's arg, where Andrew himself doesn't want to face the change of the game, reminising about his time playing Halo with his friend Chris, even the colour pallet of the arg is this kind of bloomy and saturated shader that makes it look like OG Minecraft. His ARG is nowhere near the authentic feel of this one, it's actually a polar opposite as it has different characters, acting, structures that you cannot argue in any way shape or form are genarated naturally by the game, spooky stuff going on, and ghosts of the past reaching out to him, but it's still immensely well-made and enjoyable. Then there was this one that later on turns out the guy who is covering the ARG is part of it himself as a last-minute twist. All in all, you are absolutely right, when an arg is made with passion and love for both the horror genre and the game it takes place in it's a thoroughly enjoyable experience.
Great video! And great movie as well, it's so refreshing to see a creepy minecraft ARG not immediately destroy all suspension of disbelief by introducing some "admin dimension" or shadow entities or whatever. It really keeps riding the line of "oh well this could be some weird data corruption" (strange torch I did not break, strange calm4 i did not play). Andhaving a live cam of the player as well keeps it grounded nicely. Sometimes in some ARGs it feels like the creators forget that minecraft is a game and act like they are embodying their player character directly and minecraft is real life. Here the acting makes it feel super believable as just some guy trying to play old mc and being spooked but also intrigued by the weird stuff he sees I hope you make more videos of the kind because the way you present info is rly neat (Shoutout to the section at 30:50) and it seems u have a good eye for non-slop mc horror 🙏
I hate the "Minecraft is real life and you realize you're in a simulation" trope there's always some players named like VORT101 and VORT102 and then VORT403 and so on with pitch black skins just stalking you and then all of a sudden you cross an acacia door and you're in the VORTEX admin dimension or whatever (btw if anyone wanna do this go ahead lmao) it's so overdone, seeing something like the one on the video is very refreshing
This is EXACTLY my thought. Having the IRL cam and showing him going on Reddit really sold it for me. With other ARGs that are about shadow entities and weird admin dimensions with souls getting trapped in the game and such it really destroys my suspension of disbelief cause I think "Wait... so this kid just goes to school, has dinner with his family, then logs onto minecraft to stop these world-ending entities... and then just turns off the computer and goes to bed???" Like you said, it's more believable here since it's just "weird corruption, anyone know why this happened?"
You are probably my favorite minecraft guy, you just sound so genuinely interested in what you talk about and I love it, already waiting for the next vid
I found you the DAY you posted your first video with like 500 views. and holy shit dude your ability to tell a story is crazy and so captivating. I literally watch your videos 4-5 times just to get the entire thing.
Okay, that dark cave chase was awesome. Very tense, the low light and everything. Good stuff. And nice narration too, I like the tone and cadence. 👍 Agreed on the down to earth writing of this show, it feels more real than some of the crazy super sized conspiracies with cabals of shadow people and what not.
i love how when you see one of his reddit posts, there's the comment "you know the game's been updated a few times in the last decade right?" paired with him opening a high-energy youtube short and disliking it, it really reinforces the idea of him being alone in this endeavor; everyone else has moved on to the more modern thing, he is the last beta player.
This ARG and the "Lilypad Versions" ARG are what I consider peak Minecraft horror. It has everything, the suspension of disbelief, the realistic odds, and it's not afraid to make use of the outside world and the broader internet in order to make the story more believable and have more layers. No shadow entities and no secret dimensions made by a shady organization necessary. Just the mysteries of Minecraft. I also agree with your take. It's a love letter to classic Minecraft, but also it's a story about nostalgia and letting go of the past. One big thing I do when looking back at older Minecraft versions is appreciate them as they are. Too many people slip into the old-school elitism of Minecraft, and others also forget about it and seem to discard the things that came before. I see old Minecraft as a good way to experience nostalgia, a good challenge to play Minecraft without all of the small quality-of-life updates, and also a way to appreciate how far the game has come. As the old adage says "dont cry because it's over, smile because it happened"
I have no idea if this was intentional or not, but my favorite subtle "scare" of this movie is the pumpkin that was staring right at David the first time he stumbled across the beta village. Little details like that absolutely sell it for me, even if, again, it wasn't intentional. Love it.
I recommend a minecraft arg parody series by Oneshef. It's very good and funny. Its called something like "minecraft arg but the protagonist is tired" There are multiple videos in the universe, and i recommend all of them. They are all so good, and he needs more recognition
there’s no point in looking in to them if it is just compiled funny clips and no lore, I agree they are very funny but the videos just speak for themselves
i think the series's status as a parody enhances the bits of horror in there, too; the parts with hungry and souler wouldn't be nearly as scary (and would honestly be. not scary at all lmao) if the majority of the series wasn't satire. also hiiii another collinlock16 fan!!!!
Woah! I watched your first video for the first time just yesterday, and watched your second video this afternoon, and I was sitting here thinking "I wonder if this guy went on to make more videos", and AN HOUR LATER, you upload another video. Excellent channel and content, please keep making more.
Not only is the video so good, but the way you analyze the video made me captivated to watch it all the way through even after eating my dinner. I literally forgot to clean my dishes while watching this video for more than 30 minutes. This analysis video is so simple (in how it's edited) yet i really liked the way you narrate it. It's not like one of those ARG analysis videos where i can literally predict each words the narrator would say because not only does minecraft ARGs been so cliche, but also the videos analyzing them too.
Your videos are seriously so great to listen to (and watch obv..) while writing, please keep on posting more bro... I need more to listen to while world building the hell out of my fanfic...

I can understand seeking out old versions, I look back fondly on my days playing legacy console edition. Im an adult now, and that scares me, I wish I could feel like that again. But I cant, life moves in with or without me. I realize what is happening now is going to be someones else's childhood to look back on, we're not nostalgic for just the game, but for how we were then, young, untroubled by the world. Modern Minecraft is beautiful, I find comfort in it, it may not be what I once new, but it's still Minecraft, It never left, it grew up with me. by learning to let go, I found a new perspective, and feel great about each new addition, I remember booting up my 360 and getting on after an updste and exploring what was new, Now, I Boot up the same game, just on a different platform, and find joy in what is new, and what I grew up with is still there, just with a fresh coat of paint.
I remember I’d be like “I used to be so scared when playing minecraft when it first came out” and people would be making fun of me. mongster’s video really captured that old minecraft creepy atmosphere
this was my first time learning about and watching the last beta player, and oh my gosh its definitely one of my favourite mc horror videos now. it doesn't have any crazy unrealistic aspects or scares to it, makes it seem like it could be real when you know it isn't. i have been looking forward to your next video ever since i stumbled upon the first strange house video and got even more excited seeing you tease it on instagram and you never disappoint holy shit!!! the way you edit is so nice and easy to look at, LOVED the little irl scenes, and you're very well spoken too. you did a really good job, troney!!!!!!!

When I read the title "A Player Haunted By His Own Minecraft World," I was expecting the world itself to be haunting him. Like, whenever he would try to play the newest version of Minecraft, remnants from his old beta world would occasionally make their way in. He could be out exploring an open field and randomly stumble upon his old beta house. Or he could be out mining and randomly come across manmade tunnels and it turns out to be a carbon copy of his old beta mine. Maybe some blocks could start breaking out of nowhere and it turns out that it was mimicking the actions he took during an old beta let's-play he did, even down to which blocks he broke and the pauses he took in between the breaking of each block. It almost reverses the message of the movie; instead of a man learning to let go of the past, it's a man who has moved on from the past but is constantly haunted by it. That is actually a really cool idea. I'm writing that shit down.
"Hey there's this song that embodied the visceral fear that you get when you enter a room and a boss health bar appears, what should we call it?" "Uhh, Calm4?"
Funnily, I stopped the video right before being told to do so and made sure watch the actual video first. It was a nice experience, although as a player I was annoyed by the tower not being finished and the lots of iron ores that were not picked up. I even picked up on a few of the small details. Like you said it was beautifully, meticulously crafted. It really felt just like a let's play. Your analysis and overall presentation was also really nice. I love your conclusion of the world trying to help David to move on. The thought of horror originating from a benevolent source that wants to aid in your betterment sounds very wholesome and intriguing. It both elevates and ruins the last beta player for me. As I love the thought of appreciating aspects of the old and choosing to experience them. Not of a way of being stuck in the past, but being able to appreciate the simpler experience and having to utilise more creativity with the given limitations. However, the details you gave do paint a clear picture of David and how my feelings do not quite fit with the material. Hope you find even more success, mate. You were quite entertaining to watch. Similarly to the last beta player, it did not feel like 50 minutes passed.
haven’t started the meat of the video yet but i’m so glad i listened to your recommendation of watching the movie first, that really was a phenomenal take on the genre!! usually i’m content to just watch the analysis only but your review was so glowing i had to see what the fuss was about and you weren’t kidding, that was a treat to watch blind! can’t wait to see what other mysteries and args you cover in the future, your thorough analyses are engaging and really hook me in!
I respect pushing people to watch it first, I probably was going to anyway but it's just respectful of others content to say so. You should make a 13 minute ai video of the movie though.
WAITER, WAITER MORE PLEASE !! I absolutely love your content and take on things so far I didn't even realize until the end of the video you were a new content creator Imagine my surprise upon clicking on your channel and only seeing 3 videos, goddamn
I'm glad you feel this way about The Last Beta Player but for me it had far from the same effect. It certainly has some very cool set-pieces and creates an incredible atmosphere in certain moments but in others its just a little too uneventful. After having seen the The Last Beta Player first you cutting small bits for convenience of catching your audience up with the plot perfectly highlighted to me that Mongster doing the same wouldn't have impacted the movie negatively. It already has these small cuts in it, so why not make them a bit bigger? I'm also less enthusiastic about the player acting. It is certainly done well but, as soon as you learn to ignore the camera, what Mongster does isn't the hardest task anymore. I would have major trouble with shutting up, though. That was the best part of the acting for me. You'd think that a keyboard cam and then not talking would be odd but its not odd in a jarring way and instead works just really well. I do agree with you on the point of it being super close to just Minecraft. Everything feels like it belongs in the game. Though I personally would have liked it to be a tiny bit more stylized. Sometimes it felt like the improvisational nature of how the movie was made stood in the way of really honing in on a moment. The ice for example. Such a great set-piece and not able to build a door was such a subtle blow to the player. Briefly returning to the green to get the wood is super natural for a Minecraft player for this being a movie it just ruined the moment of isolation on ice for me. But the way it's done here is still way better than in most other Minecraft ARG/Horror out there. What I can say was definitely amazing was YOUR VIDEO (again). The little bits you threw in-between were brilliant and the analysis was nice to listen to.
just watched it and came back man that's my favorite type of horror in general (spoiler) when you can't see the entity that torments the mc in a story. being able to see the "monster" sometimes ruins it a little for me, i like to let imagination do it's thing

Here the acting makes it feel super believable as just some guy trying to play old mc and being spooked but also intrigued by the weird stuff he sees
I hope you make more videos of the kind because the way you present info is rly neat (Shoutout to the section at 30:50) and it seems u have a good eye for non-slop mc horror
🙏
I hate the "Minecraft is real life and you realize you're in a simulation" trope there's always some players named like VORT101 and VORT102 and then VORT403 and so on with pitch black skins just stalking you and then all of a sudden you cross an acacia door and you're in the VORTEX admin dimension or whatever (btw if anyone wanna do this go ahead lmao)
it's so overdone, seeing something like the one on the video is very refreshing
Hi calamity guy
the part you mentioned in the comment is genuinely so well done, very clever
This is EXACTLY my thought. Having the IRL cam and showing him going on Reddit really sold it for me. With other ARGs that are about shadow entities and weird admin dimensions with souls getting trapped in the game and such it really destroys my suspension of disbelief cause I think "Wait... so this kid just goes to school, has dinner with his family, then logs onto minecraft to stop these world-ending entities... and then just turns off the computer and goes to bed???" Like you said, it's more believable here since it's just "weird corruption, anyone know why this happened?"
I wouldn't call it ARG
I fall in love with your chanel dude please never stop uploading videos
You are probably my favorite minecraft guy, you just sound so genuinely interested in what you talk about and I love it, already waiting for the next vid

I found you the DAY you posted your first video with like 500 views. and holy shit dude your ability to tell a story is crazy and so captivating. I literally watch your videos 4-5 times just to get the entire thing.
The cobblestone hut scene gets me every time. The tension is so thick, it's amazing
Okay, that dark cave chase was awesome. Very tense, the low light and everything. Good stuff.
And nice narration too, I like the tone and cadence. 👍
Agreed on the down to earth writing of this show, it feels more real than some of the crazy super sized conspiracies with cabals of shadow people and what not.
i love how when you see one of his reddit posts, there's the comment "you know the game's been updated a few times in the last decade right?"
paired with him opening a high-energy youtube short and disliking it, it really reinforces the idea of him being alone in this endeavor; everyone else has moved on to the more modern thing, he is the last beta player.
Love it.
Really glad you’re continuing this kind of thing (calling it an explanation video or something doesn’t feel like it does it justice).
👀
This is a perfect recreation of that fear you always used to have playing Minecraft alone after watching herobrian videos
This is literally the best new long-form breakdown channel of this UA-cam era
im flattered, thank you
AHHHH! I'm so glad I watched the original video before continuing this one, it's so good. Thanks for the recommendation!
BRO I WAS LITERALLY WONDERING IF YOU WERE GOING TO UPLOAD A NEW VIDEO AT SOME POINT AND THE NOTIFICATION POPPED UP WTF
I recommend a minecraft arg parody series by Oneshef. It's very good and funny. Its called something like "minecraft arg but the protagonist is tired" There are multiple videos in the universe, and i recommend all of them. They are all so good, and he needs more recognition
I'm catching up with some of the newer videos and it's actually so fucking hype
there’s no point in looking in to them if it is just compiled funny clips and no lore, I agree they are very funny but the videos just speak for themselves
I like the ones where there's no commentary. It makes it even funnier when I'm able to imagine the protag's emotions.
@@stephaniegiacco7524 but there is lore. It's all a connection story
i think the series's status as a parody enhances the bits of horror in there, too; the parts with hungry and souler wouldn't be nearly as scary (and would honestly be. not scary at all lmao) if the majority of the series wasn't satire. also hiiii another collinlock16 fan!!!!
Woah! I watched your first video for the first time just yesterday, and watched your second video this afternoon, and I was sitting here thinking "I wonder if this guy went on to make more videos", and AN HOUR LATER, you upload another video. Excellent channel and content, please keep making more.
thank you, there's gonna be more :D
Not only is the video so good, but the way you analyze the video made me captivated to watch it all the way through even after eating my dinner. I literally forgot to clean my dishes while watching this video for more than 30 minutes. This analysis video is so simple (in how it's edited) yet i really liked the way you narrate it. It's not like one of those ARG analysis videos where i can literally predict each words the narrator would say because not only does minecraft ARGs been so cliche, but also the videos analyzing them too.
YAY I’ve been hoping you’d upload again! Very excited for this!
Edit: this was awesome!! Well done!

I like the idea that entity isn't evil, it just want to say "stop being stuck in the past, it did already happen and what matters is the present, it's time to move on".
What I like about ur channel is that from the very first video on this channel 3 months ago, you have ensured that it was good quality, and ur sequel to ur first one does not disappoint either. Even this video demonstrates your skills and efforts as a UA-camr.

if anybody else remembers this as being a thing let me know, my sister told me about it when i was little and we played on it together but idk who told her and she isnt the type of person to use youtube or browse online so idk if anybody else even knows about it.

I hope you do more horror stuff, I love the mix of calm and spooky that you're able to give :3!! I'm too scared to watch horror stuff, but I still love it, so it's nice to have a more distant, calmer way to watch it

Modern Minecraft is beautiful, I find comfort in it, it may not be what I once new, but it's still Minecraft, It never left, it grew up with me. by learning to let go, I found a new perspective, and feel great about each new addition, I remember booting up my 360 and getting on after an updste and exploring what was new, Now, I Boot up the same game, just on a different platform, and find joy in what is new, and what I grew up with is still there, just with a fresh coat of paint.

this was my first time learning about and watching the last beta player, and oh my gosh its definitely one of my favourite mc horror videos now. it doesn't have any crazy unrealistic aspects or scares to it, makes it seem like it could be real when you know it isn't. i have been looking forward to your next video ever since i stumbled upon the first strange house video and got even more excited seeing you tease it on instagram and you never disappoint holy shit!!! the way you edit is so nice and easy to look at, LOVED the little irl scenes, and you're very well spoken too. you did a really good job, troney!!!!!!!

Between The Last Beta Player and things like Whitepine, seems like greatly made minecraft movies have been appearing around youtube recently. And I'm definitely not complaining.
genuinely i love your content. i look forward to the shit you put out, your deep dives are just straight investigation and information and your passion for these niche things are lovely to behold. I'm pretty sure i left a comment on your first or second one, and it makes me happy to know you got to read not just mine but everyone's. keep up the good work and focus on your passion first. UA-cam NEEDS more creators like you.
"Hey there's this song that embodied the visceral fear that you get when you enter a room and a boss health bar appears, what should we call it?"
"Uhh, Calm4?"
How dare youtube hide this from me for 1 min

I am amazed by your video. The quality and atmosphere of it is what I like. Thank you, I'm going to follow
the fact that the mobs stopped when he paused the game is what did it for me. like that is definitely singleplayer. insanely well edited
