In the words of Nelson Mandela: “It is said that no one truly knows a nation until one has been inside its jails. A society should not be judged by how it treats its highest citizens, but its lowest ones”
Netflix has a great series where the British host travels to many prisons around the world. There's definitely a correlation between the rate of re-offenders and how prisoners are treated. The countries that take rehabilitation seriously and truly do prepare each prisoner to be ready to return to society and be productive and successful, like those in Finland, Norway, Iceland, have to lowest recidivism rates. Half of all Americans would lose their minds if US prisons began introducing prisons based on Finland's model because we've become accustomed to prison being all about the punishment aspect instead of giving equal measures towards rehabilitation. The privatization of state prisons is a huge reason why. Thank you so much for putting a spotlight on this issue. A lot of people are in bad shape health-wise when they arrive on the first day. Nutrition is important for people to get their lives together. This is because we have PRIVATIZED prisons, and all they care about is keeping people coming through the door. There is literally no incentive for them to help, in any way, with rehabilitation. Congress needs to pass legislation that requires prisons to at least follow the nutritional guidelines public high schools must do. There should be some standard, minimum amount that prisons must spend on food (not labor) for each prisoner daily. Privatized prisons should be required to have and pass unannounced health inspections like every restaurant has.
I think privatization is a horrible idea. I really wish the nation hadn't gone that route. Private companies lack the self-regulation to ensure that those we send to jail or prison are treated as is their constitutional rights afford them. That being said, ............... if you don't like prison food, stay out of prison. I don't believe pampering works. It doesn't seem to 'deter' so MHO is just the basics and no more. It’s a Prison Industrial Complex and now many prisons are privately owned by corporations to make a profit off of the labor of those in prison. Corners will be cut to maximize profit. If people don’t do anything to advocate for prisoners, imagine how we’ll all be treated in re-education camps.
Federal prisons are not privatized and look at how much better the reputation is for the government run federal prisons. The recidivism rate is markedly lower for people who went to federal vs State/privatized prisons.
@@B_Bodziak Sure about that? Federal prisons are more likely to include solitary confinement with no GP and no socialization. If you’re going to deny the privatization of prisons for profit, there’s no room for further discussion.
Why not allow the prisoners to manage a garden. The produce in turn would help to give nutritious food to fellow inmates. It would also give the inmates some skills they could use on the outside, farming, agriculture, etc.
Because that would be rehabilitative and might help the inmates feel happy for a moment. Prisons are privatized and run by money hungry monsters so prison is about punishment, not rehabilitation especially when rehabilitation would negatively impact their profits. Prisons and hospitals should never have been privatized.

The amount of people horrified by this in the chat is crazy. Frankly I think there is a wider issue these people ignore. Access to fresh and healthy food is actually a luxury for ALL citizens. Not just those in prisons. I spent a few years in a food desert - poor restaurant choices (primarily dominated by processed - fast and fatty foods, markets that were either extremely overpriced or non-existent and economic inequality that kept this working class/low income neighborhood in this endless cycle by making healthy food unobtainable and a complete lack of interest for markets and healthier chains/restaurants to break ground. While I care about the plight of the incarcerated, there are whole generations of hardworking innocent people who grow up with health issues, poor nutrition, high obesity rates and diabetes - the same as these prisoners. We need to change food in America. Not just for these prisoners, but for all.
You make a good point. But, prison food is horrible. I always hated working chow and seeing what comes out of the kitchen. I wish people could smell it.
Yes you do need that, but prisons are a 'closed system' there's more control over, and most people aren't committing crimes because of their ill treatment.
As someone who spent 3 days in jail I feel I shoulda done this sort of reporting. Definitely necessary to shine a light on. I got cottage cheese in my milk carton
I'd imagine it's not much different than the cheap food in schools and hospitals. Processed sugars, fats, wheat, frozen vegetables. In fact probably similar to what we put in our pantries and freezers. The conditions themselves are probably more a result of how well the kitchen is managed. I'm looking at the images of the gross food but if you break it down fast food just looks prettier.
My poor high school in Baltimore used the same food supplier as the city jail. I got trays with moldy fries, expired milk, rancid smelling mystery meats and cheeses etc. After choking it down then puking a few times, I just stopped eating from the cafeteria. I'd rather get vending machine snacks or just go hungry. It was like that food was meant to grease the school-to-prison pipeline.
My knowledge on the US prison system is basic, but ive heard that we have the worst prison system in the developed world. For every 100,000 people, I think about 655 are incarcerated, and because the prison system (especially private ones) focus on profits and punishment rather than rehabilitation and reintegration into society, the percentage of reincarnation is higher than most other Developed countries. Its an issue that is very complex and hard to fix, and becuase the federal government is run by a bunch of braindead boomers and corporations, nothing is gonna change
This is *completely* unacceptable! While Federal prisons may be better and state and rural(still state) prisons are worse (which I believe)---the fact remains, the decision was made to privatize prisons, creating entirely new revenue streams for land barrons across the country with little to NO regulations/limits in the most important places. I WILL call my legislators but I have so little faith in it making any difference in this mess of unbridled, corporate capitalism that ACTUAL citizens take a back seat to as ,Citizens United said, "corporations are people" (with ridiculously HUGE pockets). It's got to be fixed to fix so many other things... Don't give up.
Federal prisons aren't privatized like state prisons and there's a huge difference in how they operate. Federal prisons are known as "Club Fed". Federal prisoners are treated more humanely AND the re-offender/recidivism rate is MARKEDLY lower than privatized state prisons. Private companies have zero interest in rehabilitation b/c it costs a bit more AND it might slow down the revolving door of prisoners returning. Federal law requires prisoners to be treated humanely. The problem is, they didn't define "humanely" in-depth enough. In addition to food problems, we also have prisoners dying from heat strokes because prisons aren't required to have A/C. When it's 90+F outside, imagine what it's like in a windowless, fanless concrete enclosure. People would get tickets for leaving a pet locked up in the same conditions, and while we think we should take that pet away from an owner who does that, we're okay with making people live in those conditions. Cells get upwards of 120F. Again, that is ONLY in privatized state prisons. It's going to do like everything else, it's going to stay that way as long as companies can stuff the pockets of enough Congress members, a Bill won't pass. We need the supreme court to overturn the Citizens United ruling and get dark money out of politics. McConnell has ensured the SCOTUS will have enough judges to keep citizens united going as is for the next 30 years or more. Four of the last five justices basically had their nominations funded through McConnell by Leo Leonard using the citizens united ruling.
I don't feel sorry for these guys. Most of them are repeat offenders who prey off of the weak. If you don't like the food stop breaking the law! They aren't gonna give you steak in prison it's gonna be just enough to keep you alive. Think about these guys victims and the families of the victims.
For the people who dont believe inmates "deserve " proper nutrition: A majority of inmates will eventually be reintroduced back into society and the cost of providing adequate nutrition costs less than the health issues created from feeding inmates garbage. You have to ask yourself: would you rather have a rehabilitated person who was properly fed and healthy return to your community or someone who is malnourished, sick, and angry. This isnt about giving inmates gourmet meals, but proper nutrition.
Are you re*arded? Prison is designed to want people to stay out of it. Not gonna spend tax money to give these freaks a gourmet meal when I (a functioning member of society) can barely provide for myself in this sh*tty economy
My friend sat in Dodge county correctional for like 2 years and his physical appearance changed so drastically he didn't even look like the same person anymore Mentally he was completely gone too
The cell itself does that. They can’t see outside(they put paper up to hide from guards) They can’t walk out unless the guard opens the door. It’s a demeaning experience.
Sometimes, i feel bad for what inmates eat, but at times, why would i pay more taxes for an inmate to eat better than i do? Maybe prisions should grow their own food and raise animals for protein that could be part of their rehabilitation. If they want to eat better, they should work for it.
this video is just silly, if we give prisoners good food you're gonna get a lot more people who have nothing commiting more crime because they know if they are caught they will get fed well every day. prisoners don't deserve to eat as well as people that aren't in jail THAT IS PART OF THEIR PUNISHMENT FOR COMMITING CRIME.
Don’t do the crime if you can’t serve the time. prison is a business in the United States. It was not meant to rehabilitate or help you get back into society.
well, it’s not meant to be a resort, but also the responsibility of the county/state/feds or whoever is operating to at least ensure it’s edible and safe. Then again, depending on the crime you committed, it’s hard to feel sorry for you; especially if you maliciously took the life of someone else and all the destruction and grief that has caused their families.
Not always true. Many innocent people are convicted. Many innocent people accept plea bargains and admit guilt simply because they cannot afford proper legal defense and want reduced sentences that would otherwise be devastating if a jury convicted. Nothing about prison helps the majority who are incarcerated improve. Nothing about the department of corrections is meant to correct unhealthy behavior. It feeds it.
If you saw medicine lines and the amount of people with diabetes and heart disease. And if you don’t believe him ask for a visit and smell what we feed human beings.
Pill lines are filled with addicts that traded an addiction on the street for a legally supplied addiction in prison. Others generally need anti psychotic and other meds to keep them stable. None of them are there because of the food they are being fed.
The majority of inmates, like the general population, eat nutrient-void fast food regularly before incarceration. I doubt prison food is vastly unheathier than their lifelong diet of choice. Diabetes isn’t formed over a few years, in most cases it takes decades.
Everyone who leaves prison from health issues all comes directly from eating too much commissary. The limited amount of food given to inmates by the prison isn't enough to cause high cholesterol or high blood pressure or anything else for that matter. They use a " Healthy heart" diet to feed inmates. I've spent 13 years behind bars. Nobody can deny what I'm saying. Inmates may dislike the food quality or amounts given, but they can't deny that it's not healthy 95% of the time.
Prison food is like the food you can afford when you're super poor. High in fat and low in nutritional value. And we wonder why Americans have one of the highest rates of obesity and diabetes. In America, eating well and healthy is extremely expensive.
Yeah, $4 for an 8 pack of chicken legs is soooo expensive compared to the cost of one fast food burger. $1 for an orange is soooo expensive compared to the cost of a bag of chips. $1 for a bag of lentils is soooo expensive compared to the cost of a pack of hotdogs
High in fat? Where would that fat come from? The majority of the meals are massive amounts of processed carbohydrates. Fats are expensive. Carbohydrates are cheap.
Incarceration is supposed to be for rehabilitation. How are we rehabilitating these people if we treat them worse than animals, teach them how to be worse people and then turn them back out into society?
They say a nutritionalist is in charge of the menu if you try to complain. It was hard to get a cereal that's not marketed to kids in the morning. Pudding replaced a lot of side dishes. Main course was usually something with bologna. They just say that to pass off responsibility to one person or document that can be questioned or criticized. I was so hungry in county jail at night I used to fight the idea of eating my toothpaste. They give each person one roll of TP a week. They don't give you any soap to wash your hands throughout the day. No nail clippers. I took ivermectin after I got out and I had pinworms. People probably come out with diabetes because they only feed you enough to keep you alive. If people put money on your books the only food you can really buy is ramen and they're over $1 for one noodle. They make good money marking those noodles up and if you don't like being hungry that's what you're going to be eating aside from those trays.
I’ll be upfront. I used to deliver the groceries to a lot of county jails, state pens, or federal holding facility. It’s all literally the same groceries your favorite restaurants get. The facility definitely needs to get up on the sanitation, but that’s what’s gonna happen when the inmates run the kitchens.
So let this be an incentive to not go to prison. Wtf are we trying to move in Gordon Ramsey, give them a wide screen and Wifi? People will be killing to get in for the free ride. It's not SUPPOSED to be fun, and it's not SUPPOSED to be healthy. That's prison.
That's right. The killers and addicts should be fed less, too (that's my inner jigsaw coming out, by the way. I lost a friend to a drunk driver, probably an alcoholic)
I am very conflicted about this topic. On the one hand, it's prison. It's punishment. It's not supposed to be nice and comfortable. It's supposed to be so bad that you don't want to come back. But then, on the other, you're still a human being who deserves to be treated with respect and dignity. We need nutritious food to support our physical and mental health, yet taking away flavorful and healthy foods is part of the punishment. So with all this in mind, the question becomes, do we need to punish criminals at all? and if so, is there a way to punish criminals that still maintains their dignity as a human being?
I'd like to add that I understand that all of that costs money and it would be much more affordable to eliminate privatized prisons. Imo we should have a single player healthcare system as well too.
You should see what they feed our kids in schools. People in Prison choose that life. Why feed that to kids too? Well in the world of one superintendent in Texas when he took office...WE ARE A BUSINESS! Well every business puts its profits in front of those they lead.
The old argument well tough its prison. But what they dont understand is anyone can end up there also the majority of these men and women in our prisons will be rentering society. But honestly the system does not do what it should do for them to come back into society.
Except when you feed them dog food smelling food they end up attacking staff. They have studies that safe prisons with decent food have less assaults on staff.
They're human beings. Incarceration is for rehabilitation, not slavery with cruel and unusual punishment. If you treat people like animals, they will turn into animals. They deserve better.

The old argument well tough its prison. But what they dont understand is anyone can end up there also the majority of these men and women in our prisons will be rentering society. But honestly the system does not do what it should do for them to come back into society.
Then don't commit f crimes easy
If a food item says "not for human consumption," then why is it being served to prison inmates?!
Maybe the food should be additional motivation to stay out of trouble.
Yeah in there as a punishment boo hoo they dont get 5 star dining
Except when you feed them dog food smelling food they end up attacking staff. They have studies that safe prisons with decent food have less assaults on staff.
@@S7J7P7 dog food is not that bad. it is smelly but not bad.
They're human beings. Incarceration is for rehabilitation, not slavery with cruel and unusual punishment. If you treat people like animals, they will turn into animals. They deserve better.
@@TheMetallicaMonster don’t commit crime it’s pretty simple concept it’s a punishment not a vacation
Well documented and I personally believe the reporter has put her soul into the cause and work ,she is doing .It's simply astonishing.
In prison I was told “the best seasoning to put on food is HUNGER”
This is eye opening and sad. Wow, we need reforms
Don't break the law!!!!!
