I find the idea of people being concerns about transgender people peeing in the "wrong" bathroom hilarious simply because there is nothing stopping somebody from going into the bathroom of the opposite gender and causing harm. There's nobody at the door checking birth certificates or ID to ensure that you are the correct gender for that bathroom. This means that a predator does not need to change their entire life in order to access a bathroom, they only need to wait until nobody's looking

Exactly. We don't have separate bathrooms in our homes, but how many predators are known to their victims? Most adult girls have used the men's room at some point due to a long line at public restrooms.

My college campus added single stall gender neutral restrooms and changed some multi stall bathrooms unisex over 5 years ago now. You wanna know how many people have been “attacked” by a trans person in one of those bathrooms? ZERO.
I’ve literally never been shown any evidence that this right wing talking point is anything to be concerned about. Heck, I used to have to clean the MENS room as a 5’2” woman at the restaurant I used to wait tables at. We served alcohol there and some patrons would get pretty intoxicated. I was NEVER attacked or even accosted.
People forget that it’s already a crime to attack someone. Even if all this fear mongering about trans people were true; you wouldn’t need to pass a NEW law to put that person in jail. They already committed a crime.

I'm recovering from being deeply entrenched in evangelical, purity-culture rich Christianity. I've spent years - many, many hours - trying to shake off all the prejudices I inherited and held onto. Like prejudice against transgender or gay men and women. This year I've finally gotten to the place where I can see I honestly feel "free" of all that crap in my head, all the judgement and hostility and the messages I was fed. But as I listened to Cody talk, I still feel the old arguments in my head. I can hear allllllllll the places that the old me, and sadly a lot of believers still, would pick at this video and what Cody shared. Like seeing a counselor - my knee jerk reaction was to hear all of the arguments that would come up, like "the counselor put lies in your head!" and other complete and total BS. Ugh...Cody, thank you so much for sharing your story. We're honored to hear it. And Brenda, thanks for bringing him on!

Brenda, what is wrong with you? How can you be so damn AMAZING?!? After every episode I think that you can’t get any better...and you keep impressing me!!! I’m a gay man, who, in my younger years has adamantly said that I could NEVER date a transman. However, as Cody said, education is the key! I would now definitely date a transman....there are so many ways around biological differences.
I thought being stuck in a body where you’re sexually attracted to the same gender was tough and a curse...but:
    (1) I consider it a gift now; and
    (2) I feel so much more for someone who’s stuck in the wrong gendered body.
So being part of the 🏳️‍🌈 community has taught me so much about being kind and empathetic...ergo, a gift...but it’s a gift for so many other reasons too. 😁
People ask the same thing about gay people...I grew up with a blue collar dad who was also a fisherman, and he raised me and my bro to go fishing, crabbing, working on our trucks, we’re both athletes and still love sports...and when I came out to my dad, he asked me ONE question: “are you happy?” After I replied, “yes”...he said one thing: “that’s all a parent cares about...that their kid is happy!”
Please keep up the good work and lotsa love and aloha from Hawai’i!!! 😍😍🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈🤙🏽🤙🏽

Jasper Knight Jasper, don’t ever sell yourself short and realize that you’re just as important as everyone else. Also, never forget that there are guys out there like me who don’t care that you’re trans...I’d date a trans guy in a heartbeat. There are so many adult toys nowadays that it’s easy to get around human genetalia differences. You never said if you’re a straight or gay trans man, but that’s superfluous ‘cause my point is that there are people out there who don’t care that you’re trans. I’ve been very fortunate to have been born and raised in Hawai’i, where people are VASTLY more accepting than most of America...so my mindset tends to be a lot more positive than most, so I’m glad to hear that my positivity had an uplifting effect on you...that’s what my mom would’ve liked. You’d have loved her...when I came out to her in 1997, she asked me, “oh, so Ken’s your boyfriend?” and after I said yeah, she asked me, “oh, so who’s top and who’s bottom?” Hehe. That’s how little she cared that I was gay. 😁

Jasper Knight Well continue following Brenda ‘cause she continues to redefine Christianity...and I think Jesus Christ would be so proud of her! I was raised Buddhist, where we had 🏳️‍🌈 youth support groups...so I’ve never understood the religious hatred from Christians...but I’m an atheist now. I’ve always said that I’d rather be an upstanding atheist than a wretched religious person...what’s the sense of being religious if you’re not a good person? Seems like an oxymoron IMO. BTW, Hawai’i’s not perfect...and we have our issues, but it is a very accepting place...and I firmly believe it’s because of our racial diversity. Only 2.7% of Americans are mixed race...with Alaska having the 2nd highest number at 7.4%. Hawai’i? 23.8% of us are mixed race...that’s almost 10 times the national average.

Completely agree with this. I found this video and channel specifically because I was trying to find out if being trans could be ok for a Christian person. I looked at more of this channel and I absolutely love it. I hope this progressive and accepting type of Christianity catches on and more people are like this. I was never raised in a Christian household. Everyone in my family is aethiest and my parents have never talked to me about religion or even the lgbt community. I never thought I’d be religious especially after I realized I was trans. I just thought there’s no way I don’t think I’m that type of person but recently I have become like super unsure of where my religious status is right now. Like Jesus Christ first my sexuality, then my gender, now my religious affiliation.
Anyways about Hawaii though. I don’t know when but I hope at some point in my life I get the chance to travel. Like i know everyone says that but I’m literally scheduling a lot of my life plans around this and I’ve been working towards this for a while. I mostly just want to go to France actually and some other places but also Hawaii sounds cool. I think I mentioned my sister speaks Hawaiian. She also wants to go to Hawaii at some point too and she’s the main reason I ever wanted to go in the first place. So that I could take her there.

I know how you feel. I'm agnostic myself, but I'm familiar with the Bible and much of the history of all the different types of churches and enjoy theological discussions. At any rate, with regards to evolution, I've never quite understood why a large number of creationists see evolution as basically being a concept that is an enemy of the Bible. I mean, even during our lifetime, it is obviously that people change in all different ways over long periods of time. Creation doesn't mention evolution, though as you probably know, that in no way means that it doesn't exist. There are all sort of scientific truths about the way humans are that are not explained in creation. That all said, I do believe that we have more free will than other living creatures, so I don't except a lot of the claims of evolutionary psychologists. And as for premarital sex, that's definitely a big topic among traditional Christians. From what I can tell of the Bible and it's original text, which is in Greek, premarital sex isn't explicitly condemned. What seems to me to be condemn in the Bible seems to have more to do with sacred prostitution/promiscuity and obviously adultery.

    • @LipSyncLover
      @LipSyncLover 5 років тому +1

@@technoloverish I think we're on the same page about premarital sex for sure. And I can relate on the agnosticism too. You know...you seem like a fun person to hash this out with. I consider myself an agnostic theist but that looks to Jesus as the ideal, righteous person to emulate. I think God wants us to act like Jesus and it pleases God...brings a little heaven into the world. And I think he reconciles us with God by showing us how much God loves us, dying on a cross and asking for God to forgive his tormentors. I mean wow. I don't know how to exude that kind of love. Maybe I never will. But I should strive. So...I would think that's all it really takes for me to be "Christian". I may not believe in the trinity or penal substitution though. So should those* theological opinions disbar me from the label? what are your thoughts? Also, I'm intrigued. elaborate on why you discard the hypotheses of evolutionary psychologists because we...have more free will than the species that came before? Do I have that right? 29:40 I have a boy and a girl and I just let them play with whatever they want. My boy seems very boy ish. He loves cars and stuff and is a very hyperactive little troublemaker. He's also very caring though, and pretends to breastfeed his stuffed toys sometimes. I got him a baby doll and I crocheted a carrier for that reason. His sister is still a tiny baby (8 months old) but she'll play with whatever she wants too. And if either one of them ever comes up to me and tells me they don't feel comfortable in their body, I'm more than happy to help them in any way I can. Being a progressive parent doesn't mean you have to raise your kids 100% gender neutral. It just means you listen to them and let them choose their own path in life.

Actually you are raising your children the gender-neutral way in the original meaning of it. Originally gender-neutral up-bringing meant offering children all types of toys and letting them play with them without policing them based on gender stereotypes. If boy was to choose car toys and girl was to choose dolls, it would still be gender-neutral up-bringing - long as it was truly their choice and not programmed on them by expectations ;)

I actually read recently that eunuchs can be interpreted as historic transgenderism, and there’s some pretty convincing passages in this. For example, Matthew 19 even seems to suggest eunuch could also refer to people born intersex (who in modern times are often given surgeries to “normalize” their genitals at birth, often without the consent or knowledge of the parents. If you wanna talk about “mutilating” god’s creation, let’s not talk about consenting adults undergoing gender reconstruction, let’s talk about these intersex children and their families!) “For there are eunuchs who were born so from their mother’s womb: and there are eunuchs who were made so by men: and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven. He who is able to accept this, let him accept it.”
Also Isaiah 56 “To the eunuchs who keep my Sabbaths, who choose what pleases me and hold fast to my covenant-to them I will give within my temple and its walls a memorial and a name better than sons and daughters...”
    So... yeah.

cyn cyn God does have the heart of a parent-He longs for His children to have the best and the best is men and women as He designed them to be. A parents heart breaks when they see their child walking the wrong path and they do all in their power to help them to see what they’re doing is destructive, even discipline and consequences. So I believe it breaks His heart that His children are believing the lie of transgenderism and longs for them to come back to Him, to life and light and truth and the way He meant for things to be. Sin is what has made this world what it is and when we repent of our sins and stop trying to live life our own way and turn to Christ to save us, we begin the road of sanctification. In the end Jesus will return and make all things new and this world and all its pain and suffering will pass away and those who believe in Jesus Christ and follow His way and His teaching and statutes will be with Him in eternity!
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God." - John 3:16-21

I read an article that said that sometimes it is caused by certain medications that the mother takes while pregnant, and identical twin studies have shown that it has alot to do with nurture, not just nature. Also, when I stopped to imagine myself as a female, being stuck in a male body, that does sound horrendous to go through. I have experienced suicidal depression, so I understand fully wanting to treat that in the way they did. Why would diversity in gender/sex be so shocking when there is a radical spectrum of diversity in EVERY SINGLE TRAIT in nature? Skin color goes from black as night to pale as paper and every shade in between. Intelligence goes from mind-boggling genius to barely cognitive and every IQ in between. Musical ability goes from the ability to compose concertos at 5 years old to total tone- deafness and every ability in between. Height goes from giant to little person and every inch in between. Pain threshold goes from being able to get punctured with spikes without flinching to feeling excruciating pain at a feather-light touch. Dexterity, eye color, skin elasticity etc. etc. EVERY TRAIT manifests in a diverse spectrum, not in a simple EITHER/OR binary. Why do these fundamentalist, imperialist religions like to pretend that sex and gender are somehow the ONLY exception to this recurring spectrum? How can they honestly sell this idea when there is SO MUCH scientific evidence to the contrary?
We have cis-gendered women taller and brawnier and hairier (some can grow full beards and have chest hair) with more masculine facial features and testosterone than some men. We have cis-gendered men smaller, less muscular, smoother and prettier in features than some women. We have people born with different chromosomes than their natural anatomy manifests among several other intersex traits. By the way, there are more intersex human beings than there are redheads. In the Dominican Republic, there is a village where anatomical girls become boys at puberty, naturally.
How can it be so difficult to imagine there isn't also similar variation at the sub-conscious, cognitive and personality levels as well? Why do certain religions perpetuate the LIE that gender-expression variation is some post-modern phenomenon when all over the world, in all indigenous cultures we see that gender was NEVER so simplistic and so many cultures created space for 3rd, 4th, sometimes even FIVE different gender expressions? For a more exhaustive tour of gender-queerism and gender diversity in cultures around the world see this PBS site: www.pbs.org/independentlens/content/two-spirits_map-html/ Amazing how so-called "primitive" indigenous people's simply respect nature and make space for it instead of trying to "correct it" and "order" it around like we so-called "developed" societies love to do. Much like corn, which comes in ruby, tourquiose, multi-colored, black and other colors, was whittled down to just two mass-produced strains of yellow and white, we humans LOVE to destroy natural diversity.
Even in the Jewish tradition, there was something called, “born eunuchs” (saris in Hebrew). These were people with in-tact genitalia, so they were allowed in the temple, but their BEHAVIOR was not conforming to typical masculine and feminine traits. The Talmud describes them as effeminate, (if men) or (unfeminine) if women and showing ambivalence towards marriage and having children. Jesus Christ mentioned born eunuchs in Matthew 19. He had ZERO words of condemnation for these gender-queer individuals. Not even patriarchal, imperialist religions could not deny NATURE’S DIVERSITY. Even in Islamic culture, you will find they could not erase the existence of non-gender conformity.
The rigid gender binary we were raised in is actually RECENT in human history and it is Eurocentric colonialism made worse with industrialization. We began to treat human beings like all men are identical machines whose masculinity is defined by a set of mechanical parts with software that fits into a narrow box of pre-programmed personality, behavioral, physical and sexual traits and similarly, with women too. Human reproduction and sexuality was treated like an industrialized assembly line to provide serfs and soldiers for empire. Everyone (with the exception of those rich and powerful enough to be free to be eccentric) had to surrender their unique, natural beauty to assimilate into a "borg" mentality to serve empire. The more tyrannical and conservative the religion, the more identical all the women in the society dress, look and act and so do the men. Like robots.
The human "machines" that reject the sex/gender programming and choose instead, their naturally emerging, organic self, are demonized by the imperial religions because it throws a spanner in their works. How are they to control society with unpredictable people around?

Finally, from Strong's Greek 2135, the word is from eune and echo; a castrated person; by extension an impotent or unmarried man; by implication, a chamberlain.

Hmmmm but gender identity and sexuality is pushed onto us from a really young age - Except we only see the cisnormative heteronormative propaganda. I was watching Disney from age 4 where I only witnessed very feminine women who would find their princes. Baby dolls were gifted to me soon after to take care of. And my gender identity was literally assigned to me from day one. Why is cis and hetero ok for kids but not trans or gay?

I definitely think we should do our best to dismantle those stereotypes and see each person as an individual but I'm not sure how productive it is to get hung up on pronouns, especially when discussing children.

Your point at 22:34 kind of encapsulates my theological view of being trans. Like, legit, we say that the world is steeped in sin and darkness because of the fruit being eaten in the Garden of Eden, right? That's why we have to eat to survive, to see pain during childbirth, and to work for our own survival. The Fruit is why we suffer, and literally the reason Jesus came down to save us. Why is it so far-fetched to say that one of the corruptive effects of Original Sin is that some people are born with bodies that don't fit their souls?
Like, legit, what better way for Satan to cause humanity problems than to skew the alignment of some people's bodies with their souls and see what problems that can create for them? It's ridiculous that trans people are being told to suck it up. They just want to have bodies that are expressive of their souls, just like cis people's bodies match our gender.

The only reason I even care at all about people being Christian or otherwise religious is that for some of those people, it cause them to advocate for toxic things, such us men and women being legally required to follow specific gender roles and such. If religious people consisted only of people like God is Grey, most of us would probably be completely okay with that.

So grateful for the balanced point of view as I am so tired of the extreme view that some on the progressive side that stereotype, or pressure kids to a label. Or raise them "gender neutral". Umm, just let your kid develop naturally, and if genuine distress develops later get them a counselor and have them assess what is really going on. They may have other issues other than gender identity going on. A lot of young people that think they are transgender are now finding out they're on the Autistic spectrum according to Dr. Tony Atwood. Once they find that out, the dysphoric feelings they find go away, and they're happier. BTW, women who have Autism Spectrum disorder have brains very close to a nuerotypical male, which is why we tend to have conflict with females and love having male friends. We get them because out thought processes are very similar.

I always think how grateful I am to have grown up with the internet. Let me explain: my family is very religious, and my mom is extremely homophobic. As such, all I knew about gay people was her opinion on them. If I didn't have the internet to hear different stories, actually realize that people who are LGBT are normal people and not disgusting, and explore my own sexuality, I would have grown up to be so hateful and hurtful and homophobic as well, because I had only ever heard my mom's hateful opinions. I would have rejected my brother whom I love when he came out as gay, and I would have hated myself when I realized that I am also gay. Discrimination and hateful views really do start at home, and I'm so glad that I had outside sources available to me so that I could form my own opinions and beliefs.

    • @joannelee8735

I agree. I remember going to a prayer meeting and an older member mentioned that she was watching a UA-camr she liked, and that UA-camr had recently come out as transgender. And she said that that video gave her the epiphany, "Oh. They're only asking if we can accept them as they are." I can't guess what her previous opinion of trans people were, but I'm guessing that this moment broke the myth of the 'trans agenda' in her mind and let her see that trans people are just normal people who want and deserve love + acceptance. I think the phrase 'love the sinner, hate the sin' misses the point that to love someone, you have to know them first, and after knowing them you really can't hold unto those misconceptions and stereotypes that decry LGBTQA+ identities as inherently bad. That's why even with all the garbage that comes with the internet, I'm grateful that it exists to let us learn about the stories of people who we may never meet in real life but can still teach us to be more empathetic and inspire us to fight for justice.

Watching this two years later as a nonbinary person, it's a really great conversation for allies to have, and a very good starting point for people who don't know anything about trans people, but honestly a lot of the talking points here are a little bit outdated and are not inclusive of a lot of trans people. Much respect to both of you, but a lot of the points made here are very basic, respectability-politics-friendly points that still give people an out to hate trans or nonbinary people. The idea of treating trans issues like somebody just born in the wrong body ceases to be useful really quickly and it puts the focus on the hormones, surgery, and body instead of the gender issues themselves. Saying that "hey maybe being trans is just genes messing up" and talking about the brain science is one of those things that's very bio-essentialist and unhelpful and lets a lot of binary trans people get away with being gatekeepers and lets cis people be transphobic toward anyone who doesn't fit into certain ideas of trans-ness. I don't know, it's a fine video, but a lot of the small things rubbed me the wrong way, including saying that young kids don't need to learn about trans identities yet.

      - Love your God.

If we focus on true love - a love that does no harm to a neighbor then we are following Jesus' commands.
Romans 13:8-10 tells us love fulfills the laws.
Galatians 2:15-21 tells us that works through the law will not save us. Rather, through the law we may die to the law and live for God.

Unfortunately we don’t. But if that’s what we’re working towards, is transitioning not counterproductive? In the society I’m suggesting- gender has nothing to do with anything other than genitalia. And regardless of what that is you can do whatever you want.

I don’t really understand why christians have an issue here... it’s super normal as part of development for people to struggle to get their outside to match their insides, it’s super normal for that to cause psychological distress and for people to need help working through that - transgender just seems like a more complicated somewhat medically involved version of this.
As for bathroom politics - I grew up in a dodgy town and had some friends attacked in bathrooms - they were 100% attacked by predators and not transgender people - but I do think gendered bathrooms mean that it’s easier for people to call out when someone is somewhere they shouldn’t be. I feel like gender neutral bathrooms are a third options not a replacement for gendered bathrooms

True. Part of what I don't understand about transgenderism being so controversial with Christianity is that it is based so heavily on the part of Genesis that says God made male and female, yet Genesis also says, for example, the God made evening and morning. In spite of that, few if any Christians take that to mean that midnight and other times in between the two don't exist.

The people of the Bible technically did not even believe in gender or orientation the way we do. I mean, if we told them about gender roles and orientation as a concept they would be confused. Shoot, it wasn’t just the Hebrews, the romans, Greeks, and other ancient cultures would also think our current concepts would be weird. The people of the Bible did not have the anthropological or scientific knowledge we do. It didn’t really matter weather you liked boys or girls. Shoot, it didn’t matter wether you liked a specific person of the opposite sex. At the end of the day, you were supposed to marry the person at your parents’ request or that helped you/your name survive. The Hebrews considered marriage to serve two purposes. Make children that would become warriors that would protect the tribe (and also your position in that tribe) and exchange of land/property. Not saying no one married for love back then, but that was not the point of emphasis.

However, being a science-affirming Christian who belive in the use of intellect to get to the Truth, I would love to know more about the science behind transgender people, because to me it sounds like something not understandable, maybe because I'm too ignorant. Again, it's not narrowmindidness: as a Christian I know I have to support their cause against violence, but when it comes to firmly beliving in something like changing your biological gender with so little of scientific basis, I'm perplexed. If there's something that your channel taught me, Brenda, is to be inquisitive and dive in the reality of God's creation, so it's natural for me to ask why and how.

well, science does not (yet) have a deffinite answer why a person is trans. But it's kind of the same as the "gay gene" that was just not discovered. I love science, but at the same time we just are trans, it's the experience we have whether we want or not and knowing what happened is an exact moment at prenatal stage would probably not change anything.

I already disagreed with the concept of gender reveals being transphobic. They CAN be USED to for that and they're definitely arbitrary but not innately transphobic in and of themselves. Literally 99.5% of the population is cis. It makes COMPLETE sense to assume gender based on appearance unless told otherwise. But just because you announce you're having a boy doesn't mean you'd reject them if they realized they were a girl down the line. And I think creating an atmosphere where it's safe for them (or others) to do that is crucial!
I also agree you don't need to force a conversation about sex on your kids. They'll come to you with questions on their own when they're ready/curious, especially when they're young. Same with sexual orientation -- as long as this doesn't mean denying the existence of gay people to your kids. I know my moms never explicitly told me about being lesbians, but they also didn't hide their relationship from me. And the rest of the family didn't treat it as weird or bad. Those things were crucial.
As far as Cody's opinion on gender identity, I'd also agree that's something that can be brought up when asked or when it's topical. I do think that means people need to be more comfortable acknowledging the existence of trans people though. Because if you don't, when kids do find out about them they'll likely consider transgenderism bad unless you establish with your own behavior that it isn't. And often children begin to suspect they may be trans at a very young age; they just don't have the language for it. I think creating an atmosphere where trans people are acknowledged and not demonized and talking to them early puberty is the best compromise though.
