Microsoft deserve a lot of praise for this, it would have been so much easier to go the HD remaster route and sell ports of old games as new releases. I like their idea of creating one continuous Xbox family where your new console not only runs the old one's games, but it runs them better. And console players now understand the fun we PC enthusiasts have when we upgrade and revisit old games to see how they run.
James G PS2 games released on PSN such as Shadow of the Colossus, Jak & Daxter, God of War and Ratchet and Clank are remasters that run at 1080p resolution and they have much better performance compared to playing with PS2 backwards compatibility of og PS3 with 480i signal. I am glad they exist because they still look great on modern TV's.
I know emulation on the PC is an option for many systems, but I would much rather spend the bucks on SCART RGB cables and a Framemeister or OSSC to play on real hardware. If I must use emulation, an official solution like the X1X suits me just fine.
As much as i love PS4, it kind of sucks that there isnt Backwards Compatibility. Games like God Of War 3 is charged as a brand new game, when we could have gotten it for free if it was done through backwards compatibility like Microsoft

If Microsoft really wanted to give Valve a kick up the ass they'd bring this to Windows 10. This kind of work just shows how important proper competition between platforms is, I'd never considered buying an Xbox until these new BC patches started coming through. Sure the X is expensive, but you get a hell of a machine for your money.
It's impressive, but the PC version still looks better. All they did was touch up some games to make the less graphically pleasing console version look more like the PC version, but still not quite. And you can play them in 8K/5K as well, since they are old, hence not demanding at all. And if you do not own a 5K or 8K monitor like most people, and have an NVIDIA GPU then you can use DSR at 8K, for a cleaner crisp image 'while using a 4K monitor. Downsampling. And you won't get 20 FPS dips, or a 30 FPS cap. And The Microsoft store does not even come close to competing with Valve. Maybe they try and Valve also tries to compete with Sony/Microsoft with their Steam Consoles and it is great that they do, more options and competition is good, but I am just stating that they will not beat out their competition in those fields, let alone dramatically. Each is very good at what they do best.
Microsoft can’t bring this to PC because of licensing agreements. They could make every Xbox game work on PC easily, but third party publishers probably won’t approve.
Don't care what anyone says this is one of the key selling points of Xbox one now, would love to see the same level of backwards compatibility on PS4 or future consoles, it's not just backwards compatibility, your back catalogue run and play better on the one, fantastic if you're like me and have and always will play your old games like I've done for near 30 years now.
Honestly, the work they do on this emulator really starts to sell me on the X1X even though I have no reason to buy it and wouldn't likely play it much. Crazy how much they've done, and I wish Sony would follow suit, given how much emulator work they did last gen.

One of the biggest reasons why I went with Xbox again this gen . Playing and getting all the achievements in castlevania sotn after all these years again was such a treat . A lot of these games hold up VERY well. Playing through fable 3 and ninja gaiden right now in between sessions of Evil within 2. Would have loved to play my ps1/2/ and 3 on the PS4 , but hey have been very anti consumer this gen regarding backwards compatibility. Sad really.
J Varg Mine is because I had grew up with Xbox (although I grew up with Nintendo first). And I am more into Xbox is because of how well Microsoft did. And they were one of the most successful software for PC company to make a gaming console. They paid attention to the smallest details to it.

Even most PC players plays 3rd party titles more than the PC exclusives. There was a real reason why the Nintendo Wii and Wii U were flopping because of the lack of 3rd party games.

The PS3 code is way more heavier and complex, therefore it`s not possible to add such a feature in this "first online console" generation, as long as this console was never made with PC engine or programming. Xbox 360 works because, Microsofts PC hardware and program code compatible with Windows! PS3 doesn`t work because no PC hardware and no program code is compatibility to any web platform. They need to remake and restart the whole PS3 generation, to let this feature happen. This would be a waste of money!
It's not. They can resell you it as a digital download tru the shop like they're doing now so in that regard it is the same as with the xbox one since they have to write an emulator for each title. I love this. Not an xbox owner, but it seems really important for videogames preservation. I hope Sony can do something liek this with the PS5. Playing 240p 20fps ps1 games in 2160p 60fps with better fidelity than emulators would be nice.

I mean that I want to have the pssibility to go into the store and buy games that I don't have, from ps1(Actually, I'd pay for ps1 games I already own), psp, ps2, Vita, ps3 and ps4, On a ps5, with improved visuals and a tested experience faithful to the original. I don't want free stuff, nor to pay twice. I want them to make money by having a wider catalog thanks to backwards compatibility.

I actually work in HPC so I do come across both IBM Power and Intel x86_64 architectures on a regular basis, backporting any code in this way is not an easy task; let alone doing it in realtime, with GPU support across 100's of software titles. I'm not the biggest Microsoft fan, but credit where it's due for this one (y)
but these aren't xbox one games, they are 360 games running on it... when people say it has no games, they mean there are no good xbox one exclusives :)

Great video DF - awesome feature on X1 shouldn't be ignored. I like new games but good older titles never die,RDR still a fave. Also shows MS offer value,if you own 360 games on disc you pay nothing.
Praise where praise is deserved: MS did a good job on this area this generation, specially considering the hardware limitations of the XOne. With that said it seems there are a lot of couch back compat experts in the comments here. Since they seem to know exactly how to do back compat of PS3 games on PS4 they should write the code, making said games run flawlessly out of a single emulator on base PS4 hardware, and pitch it to Sony. They could make a lot of money off their solution rather than b@tch about why someone else isn't doing it.
Microsoft has been looking towards the PC platform for a while, making all their exclusive availaable on windows. Will some of this emulation come to windows as well? Idk, i hope so, the fan emulation scene is struggeling to emulate 360 and even original xbox.
Unknown Question Mark which is to play old Xbox games? For someone who didn't own any of their previous consoles that gives me zero sentiment to get a one. IMO I'm happy that their exclusives are on PC but it's hurting them compared to PS4. But it's mostly the severe lack of exclusive on the X right now.
CovertBrony Xbox one uses an AMD jaguar CPU which is pretty low power, but it's difficult to get high powered CPU's in a small box. The OG Xbox was probably the most PC like console, with a Pentium 3 and Nvidia graphics running on a custom version of windows xp, it's just a mess to try and emulate
Now imagine what an achievement it is when a bunch of random people make an emulator in their free time without even having official documentation of the actual hardware...
Yeah what Microsoft is doing by hardware, on PCs we can't, and we do that by software which in theory could be a ton slower but RPCS3 or Xenia emulators are doing that pretty decently.
If the game code is unchanged, then how come when you put a 360 game disc into an x1 it has to download a multi-gigabyte "compatible" version from the store? If the game code is the same, then why not run the game that is already on the disc?

Sony fans bragging about all the exclusives they have on ps4 but they only play the AAA games that are available on both consoles 😂 exclusives are literally the only thing Sony has over Microsoft but even then, that could be subjective. PS+ is shit compared to Xbox live, Xbox has a 4K blu Ray player, even on their S model while PlayStation 4 pro doesn't. They argue PlayStation now is the equivalent to Xbox's backward compatibility but really we have xbox game pass, and EA access. Microsoft just offers way better services and amenities unlike PlayStation. If PS4 had backwards and a 4K Ultra blu ray player, they would be ramming that down all of everyone's throats and they know it 😂

The Xbox One X is a great system on its own, but the fact that it's the 3rd iteration of Xbox one's, each being a slightly better version of the last one always makes me laugh when I recall people who exclusively game on consoles throwing out the argument "Well, with consoles you don't need to always upgrade" and what's even funnier, is I work with a guy who uses this same argument and went from an original Xbox one to an X. $1000 later, and he argues that PC gaming is too expensive.
PC is more expensive initially. A very good gpu cost about 500 dollars. Then add the other parts,about 1000 for a good computer,that's because you assemble it yourself,and have to wait for parts. Sometimes parts are not compatible,so you have to re-order a new part,and ship back the old one,if it is still returnable. Buying off the shelf, like with consoles, would almost double your pc price. Pretty ironic of you to call me out for "half arsing my information" when so much of what you just said was completely false. Yeah, you "can" go out and buy a $500 gtx 1080 or Vega GPU but in no way do you "need" that. You can get away with a $250 gtx 1060/Rx 580 and you're completely fine for maxing out games short of 4k. And the only possible way you could buy something that isn't "compatible" is if you're buying an intel processor for an amd board, or you're trying to match a processor from a completely different generation into a different generation motherboard. Other than those extremely easily avoidable stupid user errors, compatibility is hardly an issue in the slightest. You save money buying what you need. You don't have to buy the most expensive things on the market. To top it off, it becomes increasingly cheaper from there. Come the next gen of consoles, you don't need to buy a whole new console, you can just swap out for a new graphics card and you're good to go. Anyone who had an even halfway decent setup from 2011+ is still in a position where they can match a current gen console and surpass if it they so choose.
The One S is, for all intents and purposes, identical to the original One for games. Yes, it has a very slightly faster CPU, but is certainly not something anyone should be considering "upgrading" for. What it really shines at is cleaning up the clunky original hardware design, supporting 4K video, and moving the power supply to internal. The X is a true upgrade. But I think console lifetimes were way too long before. An optional update after 4 years is perfectly reasonable IMO. All games still play on the original, so nobody is "forced" to update to get the new games.
I think there is a small / decent demand for BC. But they abanded the OG support half way throughs 360 lifetime. There are so many classics left behind.. like Otogi (in PAL region), Metal Wolf Chaos... etc.

As a huge 360 & Gears Fan, Microsoft's BC is absolutely amazing. After the 360 i switched to the PS4 in 2013 because i didn't wanted to support MS for their original Xbox One plan. But with the One X & BC they won me fully back, so for the first time i switched midgen AGAIN back from PS4 to the One X, and it's amazing. Currently i play through some of the best 360 games in better quality then they ever had. And with Scarlett on the horizon & confirmation that they will go this way further, you bet I will be on Scarlett day one. The shitstorm after their original Xbox one plan & Phil Spencer helped them in the end, and I'm glad that's the case.
This was a very interesting video especially how MS included things in the hardware to help with X360 emulation. I have both a PS4 Pro and Xbox One X and I really love how MS handles back-compat. I really like all generations of PlayStation & Xbox however Microsoft really deserves a lot of praise for the back-compat feature. I mean I was actually shocked when I turned on my Xbox One X and saw Ninja Gaiden Black (that I had purchased digitally on my Xbox 360 years ago) waiting for me to install it. There is no reason Sony couldn't have done that for the emulated PS2 titles on both PS3 and PS4. I already bought the PS2 emulated version of Siren on my PS3 back in 2013 for $9.99. If they think I'm going to purchase the emulated PS2 version on PS4 for another $9.99 in 2017 they are very mistaken. Sony can't use the excuse that the PS4 can't read a PS2 disc enough to tell which game is on the disc and to tie it to the digital copy. When they first launched the PS4 I remember I bought the physical PS3 version of Assassin's Creed: Black Flag because I didn't want to wait for the PS4 to launch to play it. When that game first launched you could get the digital PS4 copy for just $10 more for a limited time (for me it was free because at launch the PS4 came with a $10 PSN credit). The PS4 requires me to insert the PS3 disc into the PS4 to play the digital PS4 version. So the PS4 can at least read a game disc from an older system to tell which game is on the disc.
HG Shurtugal There is already a few Og Xbox games playable on the Xbox One through backwards compatibility and the original discs work just don't expect as many óg games getting added due to licensing issues with most games back then been expired
From the perspective of a PC Gamer it's HUGE to be able to buy an Xbox One X and play 3 generations of console games. It's also an excellent UHD Blu-ray player. I don't waste time defending one console or the other or even PC, I just have all the systems and play everything I want :)

There are some people out there that want to believe this all happened because it is easy but in life I have learned that "quality is never an accident" and these amazing performance enhancements on original Xbox and Xbox 360 games took some "intentional effort" by the Xbox team. One of the reasons I got an Xbox One X over a PS4 Pro is because not only to original Xbox and Xbox 360 games play better on the One X but all original Xbox One games like "Recore" and "Quantum Break" along with just EVERY multiplatform game just runs better on the One X. With the Xbox One X you have a system that first and foremost was made with gamers in mind! Well done Xbox team. Well done.
Back compat team's the hardest working for The Xbox division but seriously this form of emulation will cause problems such as shortening the life span of the machine (lens) unless it's all digital.
Microsoft made a good choice in doing this backwards compatable. Though many games don't perform much better, and are still at 30fps, and VG Tech shows tons of older games with 30fps locks. Still MUCH better than the PS4.... PSNow..
Impressiv technology. I would buy a Xbox One X just for the BC alone if they had some kind of option for an experimental mode, which tries to run all OG and 360 games. For a hand full of supported games.. I would not bother to pick one up.
They had been developing it for 3 years when they announced it. X1X was rushed because they panicked and were caught by surprise. Now it's 200 dollars more expensive and has no games. Sad
More Secxy No, submitting to half assed, non consumer friendly and unforced errors is totally not what we should be doing. It is what it is but these console half steps caused more complications than we really needed. At least MS decided to make the upgrade somewhat meaningful.

You don't need to recompile 32bit code to run on 64bit CPUs. Just look at the task manager of a 64bit windows machine, you will find that several processes have a *32 that indicates 32bit code running side to side with the 64bit. You will only encounter issues on 16bit code on 64bit OSes.
While AMD64 processors are binary compatible with 32-bit instruction streams, it is up to the OS to support legacy API functions and memory address translation. 64-bit Windows has a whole subsystem dedicated to running 32-bit code virtually, while the Xbox One OS does not. Recompiling to native 64-bit binaries not only reduces OS bloat but yields superior performance by obviating the memory address translation step.

One thing I’ve still not seen explained- why do 360 and OG Xbox games close when you put your console to sleep? Why don’t they have a resume feature like regular Xbox One games? Surely it’s just a case of pausing the emulation, no different to when you press the Home button?
If you want buy console from Microsoft, buy old Xbox 360 Slim/Elite. I still play on X360 because there best arcade racing games ever: NFS Most Wanted, Burnout Revenge, Project Gotham Racing, Test Drive Unlimited, Pure... Maybe you can't see new games on X360, but for old games its best choice.
Definitely the xbox360 is an amazing console for the games it has. (just stay away from online. ms barely supports it and you still have to pay xbox live which you will spend way more on than the console itself!)
I have a 360 slim and an Xbox one but as more games become backwards compatible, I have less need to use it. Right now I only use my 360 to play Titanfall, Gta V, Rockband 3, MW2, MW3, a few Kinect games, Minecraft and Skyrim.

In the case of Sony, it's the complicated Cell architecture that is preventing BC on PS4.

And on PC you don't need backwards compatibility, and when 16K comes out, or 32K, you can go back and enjoy your classics in that resolution too.

Xbox 360 works because, Microsofts PC hardware and program code compatible with Windows! PS3 doesn`t work because no PC hardware and no program code is compatibility to any web platform. I actually work in HPC so I do come across both IBM Power and Intel x86_64 architectures on a regular basis, backporting any code in this way is not an easy task; let alone doing it in realtime, with GPU support across 100's of software titles. I'm not the biggest Microsoft fan, but credit where it's due for this one (y)

Praise where praise is deserved: MS did a good job on this area this generation, specially considering the hardware limitations of the XOne.
With that said it seems there are a lot of couch back compat experts in the comments here. Since they seem to know exactly how to do back compat of PS3 games on PS4 they should write the code, making said games run flawlessly out of a single emulator on base PS4 hardware, and pitch it to Sony. They could make a lot of money off their solution rather than b@tch about why someone else isn't doing it.

CovertBrony Xbox one uses an AMD jaguar CPU which is pretty low power, but it's difficult to get high powered CPU's in a small box. The OG Xbox was probably the most PC like console, with a Pentium 3 and Nvidia graphics running on a custom version of windows xp, it's just a mess to try and emulate

Yeah what Microsoft is doing by hardware, on PCs we can't, and we do that by software which in theory could be a ton slower but RPCS3 or Xenia emulators are doing that pretty decently.

If the game code is unchanged, then how come when you put a 360 game disc into an x1 it has to download a multi-gigabyte "compatible" version from the store? If the game code is the same, then why not run the game that is already on the disc?

I personally prefer the PS4 but I'm giving huge props to Microsoft for this, they've really done a 180 ever since the Xbox One was announced.
Sony fans bragging about all the exclusives they have on ps4 but they only play the AAA games that are available on both consoles 😂 exclusives are literally the only thing Sony has over Microsoft but even then, that could be subjective. PS+ is shit compared to Xbox live, Xbox has a 4K blu Ray player, even on their S model while PlayStation 4 pro doesn't. They argue PlayStation now is the equivalent to Xbox's backward compatibility but really we have xbox game pass, and EA access. Microsoft just offers way better services and amenities unlike PlayStation. If PS4 had backwards and a 4K Ultra blu ray player, they would be ramming that down all of everyone's throats and they know it 😂

The Xbox One X is a great system on its own, but the fact that it's the 3rd iteration of Xbox one's, each being a slightly better version of the last one always makes me laugh when I recall people who exclusively game on consoles throwing out the argument "Well, with consoles you don't need to always upgrade" and what's even funnier, is I work with a guy who uses this same argument and went from an original Xbox one to an X. $1000 later, and he argues that PC gaming is too expensive.
PC is more expensive initially. A very good gpu cost about 500 dollars. Then add the other parts,about 1000 for a good computer,that's because you assemble it yourself,and have to wait for parts. Sometimes parts are not compatible,so you have to re-order a new part,and ship back the old one,if it is still returnable. Buying off the shelf, like with consoles, would almost double your pc price. Pretty ironic of you to call me out for "half arsing my information" when so much of what you just said was completely false. Yeah, you "can" go out and buy a $500 gtx 1080 or Vega GPU but in no way do you "need" that. You can get away with a $250 gtx 1060/Rx 580 and you're completely fine for maxing out games short of 4k. And the only possible way you could buy something that isn't "compatible" is if you're buying an intel processor for an amd board, or you're trying to match a processor from a completely different generation into a different generation motherboard. Other than those extremely easily avoidable stupid user errors, compatibility is hardly an issue in the slightest.
You save money buying what you need. You don't have to buy the most expensive things on the market. To top it off, it becomes increasingly cheaper from there. Come the next gen of consoles, you don't need to buy a whole new console, you can just swap out for a new graphics card and you're good to go. Anyone who had an even halfway decent setup from 2011+ is still in a position where they can match a current gen console and surpass if it they so choose.
The One S is, for all intents and purposes, identical to the original One for games. Yes, it has a very slightly faster CPU, but is certainly not something anyone should be considering "upgrading" for. What it really shines at is cleaning up the clunky original hardware design, supporting 4K video, and moving the power supply to internal. The X is a true upgrade. But I think console lifetimes were way too long before. An optional update after 4 years is perfectly reasonable IMO. All games still play on the original, so nobody is "forced" to update to get the new games.
I think there is a small / decent demand for BC. But they abanded the OG support half way throughs 360 lifetime. There are so many classics left behind.. like Otogi (in PAL region), Metal Wolf Chaos... etc.
Will the new Xbox series X 2020 be backward compatible to all OG Xbox games?

As a huge 360 & Gears Fan, Microsoft's BC is absolutely amazing.
After the 360 i switched to the PS4 in 2013 because i didn't wanted to support MS for their original Xbox One plan.
But with the One X & BC they won me fully back, so for the first time i switched midgen AGAIN back from PS4 to the One X, and it's amazing.
Currently i play through some of the best 360 games in better quality then they ever had.
And with Scarlett on the horizon & confirmation that they will go this way further, you bet I will be on Scarlett day one.
The shitstorm after their original Xbox one plan & Phil Spencer helped them in the end, and I'm glad that's the case.

This was a very interesting video especially how MS included things in the hardware to help with X360 emulation. I have both a PS4 Pro and Xbox One X and I really love how MS handles back-compat.
I really like all generations of PlayStation & Xbox however Microsoft really deserves a lot of praise for the back-compat feature. I mean I was actually shocked when I turned on my Xbox One X and saw Ninja Gaiden Black (that I had purchased digitally on my Xbox 360 years ago) waiting for me to install it.
There is no reason Sony couldn't have done that for the emulated PS2 titles on both PS3 and PS4. I already bought the PS2 emulated version of Siren on my PS3 back in 2013 for $9.99. If they think I'm going to purchase the emulated PS2 version on PS4 for another $9.99 in 2017 they are very mistaken.
Sony can't use the excuse that the PS4 can't read a PS2 disc enough to tell which game is on the disc and to tie it to the digital copy. When they first launched the PS4 I remember I bought the physical PS3 version of Assassin's Creed: Black Flag because I didn't want to wait for the PS4 to launch to play it. When that game first launched you could get the digital PS4 copy for just $10 more for a limited time (for me it was free because at launch the PS4 came with a $10 PSN credit). The PS4 requires me to insert the PS3 disc into the PS4 to play the digital PS4 version. So the PS4 can at least read a game disc from an older system to tell which game is on the disc.
How about getting OG Xbox games on the one.

From the perspective of a PC Gamer it's HUGE to be able to buy an Xbox One X and play 3 generations of console games. It's also an excellent UHD Blu-ray player. I don't waste time defending one console or the other or even PC, I just have all the systems and play everything I want :)

There are some people out there that want to believe this all happened because it is easy but in life I have learned that "quality is never an accident" and these amazing performance enhancements on original Xbox and Xbox 360 games took some "intentional effort" by the Xbox team. One of the reasons I got an Xbox One X over a PS4 Pro is because not only to original Xbox and Xbox 360 games play better on the One X but all original Xbox One games like "Recore" and "Quantum Break" along with just EVERY multiplatform game just runs better on the One X. With the Xbox One X you have a system that first and foremost was made with gamers in mind! Well done Xbox team. Well done.

Microsoft made a good choice in doing this backwards compatable. Though many games don't perform much better, and are still at 30fps, and VG Tech shows tons of older games with 30fps locks. Still MUCH better than the PS4.... PSNow..

PS4 pro was a rushed decision.

You don't need to recompile 32bit code to run on 64bit CPUs.
Just look at the task manager of a 64bit windows machine, you will find that several processes have a *32 that indicates 32bit code running side to side with the 64bit.
You will only encounter issues on 16bit code on 64bit OSes.

The best exclusive on ps4 is actually a remaster of a ps3 game called the Last of Us. That's just my opinion though. After that it was the Infamous games and there hasn't been a new one since the ps4 launched with Infamous Second Son
Rich fantastic work, this has been a long time coming but I'm glad to see you shine the light on BC on Xbox. Such an immense technical achievement, Xbox really does have some of the best software guru's in the industry.

One thing I’ve still not seen explained- why do 360 and OG Xbox games close when you put your console to sleep?
Why don’t they have a resume feature like regular Xbox One games? Surely it’s just a case of pausing the emulation, no different to when you press the Home button?
If you want buy console from Microsoft, buy old Xbox 360 Slim/Elite. I still play on X360 because there best arcade racing games ever: NFS Most Wanted, Burnout Revenge, Project Gotham Racing, Test Drive Unlimited, Pure...
Maybe you can't see new games on X360, but for old games its best choice.

Definitely the xbox360 is an amazing console for the games it has. (just stay away from online. ms barely supports it and you still have to pay xbox live which you will spend way more on than the console itself!)

I have a 360 slim and an Xbox one but as more games become backwards compatible, I have less need to use it. Right now I only use my 360 to play Titanfall, Gta V, Rockband 3, MW2, MW3, a few Kinect games, Minecraft and Skyrim.
