My sister is currently crocheting a book blanket for the year! Instead of a temperature blanket, she's crocheting granny squares to match the covers of the books she's reading.
I want to thank you for your podcast. I started by watching Ariel's videos about her house renovations. From there, I found your podcast. In my mid-fifties, I am probably one of your oldest listeners. Your podcast has exposed me to books I wouldn't otherwise be exposed to. The twp of you together is a great combination. I am reading differently and dreaming of what could be. Thank you.
Since we are talking about Animal Farm in this episode, I wanted to do a quick shout out to the woman behind the man, George Orwell's first wife Eileen Blair. Animal Farm would not be what it is without Eileen's input. She also found an accepting publisher for it after it had been rejected several times. She tragically died of medical malpractice before the book was finally in print. :( Source: Wifedom: Mrs. Orwell's Invisible Life by Anna Funder
40:52 It's interesting that mostly the Japanese publishers use the same cover design when western books get translated into Japanese, but when Japanese books are translated into English, it has a completely different vibe 😂
There is now a direct train from Birmingham (and London) to Hereford and you can get the Hay Festival bus to the town Hay on Wye! I went in 2023 with a friend and it was such a lovely experience. The speakers at the event are so interesting and the organisation of this festival is impeccable. On top of everything the people attending are just the nicest. Imagine a field of people sitting in the sunshine and NOT one person is on their phone! Everyone is reading. Highly recommend it for your book retreat.
ariel's sweater + room lighting combo is giving Wes Anderson movie vibes in this episode 😊 working in a bookstore totally sounds dreamy until you think about the whole customer service nightmare lol
Loved hearing about the book truck plans - how exciting! Ariel - there is a wonderfully cosy & wholesome book called ‘The Bookshop on the Corner’ by Jenny Colgan about a librarian whose job is made redundant so she moves the the Scottish Highlands and buys an old van which she converts into a mobile bookshop. Listening to you talk about your plans reminded me so much of this book!
This was the perfect thing to listen to while doing chores today. ❤ Once the book truck is on the road, I'll need someone to take my bank info away from me so I don't spontaneously book a ticket to Canada 😅
Hearing you guys discussing Canada weather, and why people would choose to settle in certain parts of it is giving me Vinland Saga flashbacks which, AIN'T IT, but is also all that's coming to mind 😂
I’m anxious to listen to Ariel’s Animal Farm read! I purchased a copy a few months ago to reread because I haven’t read it since junior high and I’m now retired!
haha, speaking of the cold ❄ I am reading Ursula K. LeGuin's "The Left Hand of Darkness" these days (while experiencing around "only" -5 degrees Celsius in Vienna). The plot is set on a planet most of which is undergoing ice age, and the main characters happen to have to flee and wander through the ice, snow, around glaciers on foot and skies, over several months, dragging a sledge, sleeping in a tent... it is a very good read, also questions gender roles and heteronormativity, I highly recommend reading it in the winter !! I hope you keep warm, love your podcast 🥰
Is there any chance Raeleen’s audiobook will also be available for purchase outside the Patreon? 🤞😗🤞 And congratulations on finding your truck, Ariel! I’m curious if you were inspired at all by Sunny’s Book Truck and any other book mobiles? 🛻
Thank you, girls! Perfect timing so I can listen to you while I get ready for work. I'm reading The fellowship of the ring with my best friend, 60 pages of introductions so far.
I’m from just outside of Edmonton and the other week they got to -50 something with the windchill. I’m living in Northern Ireland now and don’t miss the cold! It was brutal growing up 😂. Currently reading Greenwood by Michael Christie, it’s good and stressful!
I love reading aloud, aka performing, books to my kids, even though they read a lot of books on their own now, too. Novels like Harry Potter, The Christmas Pig, the Super Fudge books, My Side of the Mountain series... I love doing voices and it's such lovely quality time together. There is an audiobook I listened to all about it called The Enchanted Hour: The Miraculous Power of Reading Aloud in the Age of Distraction by Meghan Cox Gurdon which was very interesting and well done; I recommend it. Because reading aloud isn't just a parent-kid thing!
The other day I started to reread my fave book, Slaughterhouse-five, for like the fifth time and got 2 paragraphs in and started crying 😂 Can't wait to listen to the animal farm audiobook! ❤
I manage a really small liquor store and there's so much downtown in the store that I get most of my reading done here 😂 Being paid and getting to read 50% of the time is pretty magical
Such a good ep as usual, you have brightened my Tuesday morning. I'm not sure why American Psycho would be hard to find in Canada, but interestingly in Australia it's also hard to find because it was briefly banned! Even now it is only able to be purchased by people 18+, and it has to be held behind the counter or "sealed" on the shelf. Super interesting as we don't have many books that this rule applies to.
I was just as surprised by the news of Keanu Reeves writing a book. From what I understand he has written a graphic novel series in 2021 and he wanted to dive deeper into that particular word. So the book coming out is part of that world he created.
I love this podcast so much 🥰 thank you for showing up every week and being so entertaining! also, i have a book recommendation that i think both of you will enjoy! it’s called The Chaos Machine by Max Fisher, and it’s all about social media and the impact it has on people and society! it seems like something similar to So You’ve been publicly shamed, so i had to mention it 😊 i’m currently reading it and it’s super interesting and very easy to get into! hope you pick it up if you have the time😘
Stashing down my books this year... reading through all the ones that don't register 'permanent shelf status'. So far one is better than anticipated (still ditching it tho') a biography of Alexander Woollcott by EP Hoyt. The other 5 not worth the mention. Hopefully February's lot of rejects prove more interesting...
Ariel! If you want to keep your letter game going: I highly recommend reading The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie society! It was such a lovely book and you can listen to it as an audio book. It's only 8 hours long and you can listen to it at a higher speed. The characters are so lovable and you follow the main character learning something about life during the 2nd world war as well. Also to you both: I think you would also both enjoy Snapdragon by Kat Leyh! It's a short Graphic Novel which kind of reminded me of Brenna Thummlers's books as well as Ballad for Sophie. Good luck with your reading goals, thank you for sharing your insights with us! :)
The key to being able to read on the job...get a chill, low-demand office job and read when you're not busy. Not that I'm speaking from experience or anything....😉
Ariel says, “You guys know I’m a little wacky but you don’t know how deep it goes.”🤣 And “Imagine being my boyfriend.”🤣
My sister is currently crocheting a book blanket for the year! Instead of a temperature blanket, she's crocheting granny squares to match the covers of the books she's reading.
omg!! that's awesome!!!
That is so cute 🥺

57:18 Hello, I’m Emma Jane!! The reading scarf idea comes from the temperature blanket concept, so nice catch, Ariel!
Also thanks so much for the shoutout this was such an amazing surprise 🥹
I LOVE THE WEATHER CORNER 😂⛈️🌈❄️🌡️🌬️
At 1:01:22 I had the sudden vision of the two of you driving around Nova Scotia in the bookmobile, solving mysteries. 😄
right!!? great comment
What a great vision.😄
wasn't expecting for the godawful train line situation in my homeland to be addressed in this video, but here we are
😆

Hi guys!! I wanted to let you know south of you, in Ohio US, we hit -21C this last week for 3 days!

Have you read any other Vonnegut? My favorites are _Hocus Pocus_ and _Bluebeard_ .
I manage a really small liquor store and there's so much downtown in the store that I get most of my reading done here 😂 Being paid and getting to read 50% of the time is pretty magical
Ariel, I can't wait to see book mobile renovation videos on yours or this channel! 💙📚
Are you going to make a video of the closet purge? I love those!!

Like you both could open book boats, east coast west coast. Future of the Pod.
A japanese mini truck?! Is it a kei truck? I love them! So cute

excited to see the bookmobile ❤
Have you guys read “Four Thousand Weeks, Productivity for Mortals”?
Keanu has already co-wrote a comic book series (with Matt Kindt), *Brzrkr*

I loved the Guernsey… book!❤️🇨🇦
Your bookshop (on a boat or not) will be wonderful. :D
Ariel's cast offs with marbled sleeves?
There's also a mood blanket.
Raeleen you could do a genre blanket.
This is the second time today that I heard someone say they thought "Stoner" was underwelming.
The key to being able to read on the job...get a chill, low-demand office job and read when you're not busy. Not that I'm speaking from experience or anything....😉
ariel, please, please re-read catcher in the rye.
is the discord only for patreon members?
yes!
hahahaha go CJ :DDD
keanu reeves and china miéville? what? please keep us posted
CJ is so hardcore haha
