I loved this episode! I love the idea of a book time capsule for books that feel only medium, and I love hearing about pod people showing up at the baby mini teeny awesome truck! Question for Ariel and Bissett Books: Are you going to be making this a summer business? (translation: will I have more chances to see the truck?)

Something that helps me distinguish my academic reading from my hobby reading is to use a different format. I often will read physical copies of my school books since I have to study/annotate them, but I will listen to my fun books on audio. This is also a great way to habit stack cuz you can break up your studies with a little walk or house chores and get to listen to a more fun story! (But, as the wise Ariel said, there is no shame in giving up! Sometimes it’s healthier to use your precious little free time for a different form of rest.)

Hello! I loved this episode, and I particularly loved all the super thoughtful responses to Amy J's eco-anxiety bookish dilemma. I was thinking about what Amy J said about a collection of books (even second-hand books!) giving them crippling anxiety - and I wondered if there could be a way for Amy J to honour and celebrate their favourite stories or love of reading in the home, in a way that avoided physical books entirely (since they appear to be such an emotional trigger/ Amy so strongly associates them with the climate crisis and mass production). One way could be to commission an artist to illustrate the spines or covers of their absolute favourites, and display the art somewhere in the home - or if that's a little costly (fair!) another could be to print out or hand write favourite bookish quotes or passages and display them in frames around the house. Just a thought! Stay gold, Amy J.

Do you have a guest book for the truck for people to leave their names and notes in? A local to me permanent jeweler has one at her shop for customers to sign. I know it's more of an AirBnB type thing, but it might be a fun thing and it would help you to remember names! :)

Something my brother does with his ereader is getting library books on loan, then putting the ereader on airplane mode and turning off wifi. Apparently as long as it isn't connecting to wifi or internet, he can keep the book well past the library deadline.

Hah! I do that too. I literally line up the next 10-15 books I want to check out, mass check them all out, download them on my eReader, put it in airplane mode, return the books the same day from my phone to the library so they're not being held up for anyone to check them out, and then just coast on airplane mode for 4-6 weeks at a time until I'm ready for my next "batch". It's a beautiful system.

I totally related with the 10 or so books I tend to just put a little tab in them as a bookmark and put them in a come back to you area on my shelf and like you say I when I look at that shelf and enough time has past if I'm not picking it up because I know I wasn't enjoying it enough then move it on. Some books I do want to finish but like it can be overwhelming so I aim to finish say two or three of the outstanding books and just focus on those and if I gravitate to one more then just continue with that. It's giving yourself the freedom and not having too many hard rules just use it as a time to play around and enjoy your books without pressure. And Ariel I recently looked over my Goodreads shelf it's been a while, I made a new shelf called 'Finish Someday' haha where I've moved all of the outstanding books from currently reading. I've just got two current reads and an outstanding one in there now and it's so much easier to look at. Also has Raeleen ever played Cult of the Lamb? I think she'd love it!!! 😊

For the non book owning book lover, what if you went in Canva and designed a few pieces of art that were rectangle colors like book spines and put some of your favorite books and authors on the spines? Since you aren't reading the books and just want a joyful reminder of books you love around your home. Simple cheap art you cant print for less than $1 each mightbe fun.

In Wales you can get information on water levels and quality from Natural Resources Wales. Canada could well have an equivalent body and they may have done some monitoring on that river that's publicly available. Also big congratulations Ariel on being quoted I the Guardian books newsletter. It was exciting to read in unexpected context.

Hi Ariel and Rayleen! Fun story for you guys: I bought A Tree Grows in Brooklyn at the recommendation of this podcast and the version I found is from 1943 and has a label on the front that says “Due to the critical paper shortage, this reduced size must be adopted to keep this popular bestseller available to the public.” Then in bold: “every word of the original book is contained in this edition.” On the back is a big ad for buying war bonds. So excited to read this tattered gem from the thrift store! I’m also currently reading The Blue Castle and am eating it up. Love this podcast and the amazing recs. Our tastes definitely align.

i really liked all of kayleys recs! (oh no, my tbr is gonna get bigger once again), when describing her favourites and the kind of books she tends to read, it really reminded me of one of my all time favourites: "this is how you lose the time war", bcs it is queer, also very whimsical (starless sea is definitely my top book ever! and has some same themes and vibes in it), and it has a garden in it. its very probable that kayley has read it already, it was also pretty big everywhere, but i just wanted to mention it, in case theres someone with similar taste.

Hey there are definitely people checking water quality and they send out warnings! Sometimes parts of the Oslo fjord isn't safe to swim in and we get told when and where to avoid. The fjord next to my super remote cabin is basically always safe to swim in, but we check if the shells are poisonous (they get regularly tested) before we eat them ❤ I am sure Canada has something similar. Only drink water from running streams, not still water when out on a hike. When in doubt - boil it ❤ Stay safe in nature 🌲🌻🌿

I have just finished my mashiest mashed potato book of all time and have immediately rushed to the comments section to inform you guys (after having a lil cry). My mum read Never Let Me Go when it was published, when I was ten years old. I used to pick up her books when she was done with them, but when she explained what this one was about I found the idea so sad that I couldn’t face actually reading it, and actively avoided it whenever I saw it in bookshops since, despite the concept still haunting me. Then, a few years ago I read Remains of the Day by Ishiguro. I fell in love with his writing style and knew I was going to read every book written by him… with dread as I realised that meant finally facing NLMG. Several years of the book sitting on my shelf later, and 19 years after I first thought about picking it up….. I have officially conquered those potatoes!
