  • Welcome to a private tour of a Taiwanese rare platycerium collector by the name of Huang Shi Jie. This topic is broken down into 2 episodes so as not to overwhelm you.
In the todays episode, we tour his extremely rare and expensive platycerium collection. We unravel the mysteries of their origins and why their excruciatingly high price tags are justified. Feast your eyes on the beautiful, diverse and unique platyceriums in this episode while getting to know their names. I felt very lucky to have this opportunity to view and film these rare platyceriums as only a handful of collectors in the world has them.
At the end of the episode,
In the next episode, we dive really deep into the care of these magnificent treasures (including his controversial method of using 24 hours artificial light). Our generous host divulges every little detail about how to grow these platyceriums into show-quality specimens. I was surprised to know that most of these platyceriums do not favor hot and humid tropical climates such as one that I live in. Do not miss out the end of the episode, when our master propagate a platycerium for us!
I promise you will come out of these 2 episodes with newfound respect and immense knowledge for the platycerium - perhaps, you might even gain confidence to pick one up to try!
Special thanks to our knowledgable translator Alvin who will be taking us around Taiwan in the many upcoming episodes!

Sad Taiwan do not have native Platycerium, all come from Southeast Asia, Papua, Australia, Madagascar Central Africa and South America. and also Arowana fish most of them the best in Malaysia(Peninsular) and Indonesia(Borneo West Kalimantan) but Taiwan have many beautiful fern plant unique to Taiwan.

I am only familiar with Platycerium bifurcatum. I am so happy to see all these beautiful cultivars and looking forward to the next video on culture of these amazing plants. I am especially interested in the different mounting methods shown in the video and propagation. Thanks again, Sean for a great video. You open up a whole new world of plants for me!

I love plantyceriums too. My collection is small, about 15 but they are the common ones I can find in Florida USA. They are very beautiful plants.

Sean, if you wanna go to the Philippines, there is a museum in Antipolo that has an arboretum with all native species. You can look up Pinto Art Museum arboretum hehe.
