  • Dyke and The Blazers "You Are My Sunshine" from "Dyke's Greatest Hits - The Complete Singles". In the preparation for this digitally remastered release, we discovered a tape box on a closet shelf in the old Original Sound studios dated c.1970, but it was probably shot in 1969 upon the release of Original Sound 7" OS-90 "You Are My Sunshine" b/w "City Dump".
    Dyke was the first artist to ever use "Funky" in a song title and was king of the regional shoutouts. His "Funky Walk" mentions at least a dozen cities where he got airplay.
    Dyke was lost to a gun shot wound in Phoenix, AZ on 3/13/71.

      So sorry for the loss. You must have some great memories from way back then, I mean this was a drummer who gave the steady and funky drums to the one and only ARLESTER CHRISTIAN, the man was known to NOT live by the rules! Care to share?

    Man, Arlester 'Dyke' Christian could have been even more of an icon had he not gotten killed in that altercation in '71 at age 27. This guy did not PLAY!!!!! Listen to some of his other stuff. It like listening to Lee Fields, Charles Wright, Eddie Bo, Moody Scott, and many other unsung funky cats. The experience, if you are into it, is SURREAL!!!!!!!

      He was funky but also mellow, listen to I'm so all alone. It should have been a soul classic not the b side of runaway people. It,'s right there with Charles Wright Loveland.

    To me, this is the absolute best funk band of this or any other era. So bare, but so full of sound, and just super-ultra-greasy. Every beat, every note, every word --- perfect. Funk does not get any better.

    There was never another funk-meister more dear to me than Dyke. To this day, when I walk into the lair of my cohorts and comrades, they break out Dyke & The Blazers as a tribute to our profound respect for him as a sho' nuff originator of what funk was about. He and Johnny Taylor were the absolute best. And now ..... I listen to him every damn day.

  • @harolddottin10

    Arlester Dyke Christian was a threat to the master himself James Brown.
    He commanded the stage and was extremely dynamic. His band The Blazers included former members of the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band. Dyke was 27 years old
    when he was shot and killed in Phoenix Arizona.

    • @captlarry-3525
      @captlarry-3525 23 дні тому

      That helps explain what this band was so tight and did so much with so little. Long time since I heard of the Watts 103rd Street Rythym Band. KDIA in Oakland played some great stuff in the 60's...otherwise a white kid from the burbs like me would have remained clueless. Grateful for the music they left. Wish they were all still here !

    Hi everyone. I was born 1970 in New Zealand so I missed this action. As a child I was influenced by what my patents loved about music. Before my teens disco was it. Then into the eighties hip-hop stole me for a while. As I went into my thirties I started back tracking old school funk after finding out a lot of rap and hip-hop used these jams. All ways searching I came across this band. Oh boy! How fortunate I have been. Would just like to say that its a blessing to see family of this band comment on these heros of there day and even now in my eyes. Thank you to the families and thank you for the post. Stihlearning

    Found these dudes the other day - instantly fell in love with their super fat rolling groove - read about dyke dying at 27 today - in the "27 club" - totally fucked. Amazing how devastated you can be from finding an amazing new favourite band - and feel so rotten when you read about somebody dying in shitty circumstances, and how shortchanged they were. Can't help imagining what they could have accomplished. The swing was strong in these dudes.

      Peter Burlin - it certainly is a different take, setting it apart from the innumerable renditions of this chestnut. It reminds me somewhat of the arrangement that "Brother" Jack McDuff and David Newman cut of "But It's Alright", at around the same time, which plays up the dischordance between McDuff's B-3, Newman's Sax, and the rest of the band.
