It is obvious ,that essential is ability to play music( doesnt matter if its4, 5 , 6 , 7, 8 , 9 string instrument) , theory is just helping you to ' see ' combinations of notes in context of previous and next sounds.
Dave its about pickups. I REAALLY recomend you to buy some fishman pickups that tosin is using now. They have a very rich sound and flexibility like hell. Its an inovation in guitar building. I cant listen to anything else but fishman pickups. You just have a more true and natural tone to begin with...
i have a rg8 with the stock pickups which are generally regarded as pretty terrible but with brand new strings i can get a similar tone (until they go dead). I've also found using a thinner string helps with the tone i used to use a 80 gauge for the 8th string i now use a 11-74 set which is so much clearer.
oh absolutely. Love hevy devy :) in fact when I was suggesting that Tosin Abasi put out a quiet album, I had Townsend's "Ghost" in my mind. Love the guys work
I love Tosin because he's almost too good to be modest and down to earth yet he still is, even explains something as simple as his tuning when most people of this caliber guitar playing are just in their own world.
basically if you take the prefix "prog" from the word "progressive" (since what he plays is called progressive metal) and the suffix "gnosis" from the word "diagnosis" (which means the identification of something) and put them together it creates "Prog-nosis". it means to break down his progressive style of play. hope that helps!
The eight string is another string not just for heavy riffs but for the dynamic of the lower string you can play the natural scale, it's just an extended reach guitar stop the hate
i know what you meant, the 8 string (or the last string close to your chin) are usually use for breakdown in heavy music standard. although the tone is low, still comes in handy somehow especialy when it comes to making a new fresh riff no kidding
Cyborg Rabbit Personally no. You can play it like any other guitar, and just view it as a guitar with more strings, since the fretboard is essentially repetition. Or you can choose to view it as a bass and guitar spliced together. Or even treat it as an entirely new instrument. As far as sound goes, it's an interesting timbre for sure. With the added lower register you have access to richer, fuller chords. I find that it lends itself to tapping very well too, since you have all that extra real estate on the fretboard. For me the extra range enhanced my inspiration. But they're not for everyone. Definitely try one out before you think of purchasing one.
***** Very cool, thank you for your detailed description. If i ever come across one, i'll try it out, but for now i only have access to a 6 string, which in and of itself i have yet to even scratch the surface of :P
I was to eager to get an 8 string to try all these riffs so I rushed into the first one I could afford at the time, Ibanez rg8 for around $500, and I regret it :( I should've waited and got myself a TAM10 or a RG2228.
I dont like all animals as leaders stuff, like I dont like the more djenty sound, but I love it how Toni Abashi combines prog and metal with jazz, on an 8 string. he actually plays 8 strings rather than some 8 stringers or 7 stringers who only use 1 to 4 strings.
Thing about those 8 stringers is that the bottom 2 notes tend to sound a bit flabby at the bottom of the neck. I guess you can counteract that by not using em, but for me, cleans are suited well to good ol 6 strings
I really love the clean tone, its very clear and articulate. However, i agree with a previous comment, which stated that he should use higher gauge for the 7th and 8th strings, it sound kinda unbalanced. But maybe its because the sound is too bassy in nature, it is a low E in the end ;p
pick up violin or other stringed instruments not using frets cello viola bass especially contrabass will help you with stretching in my experience learning contrabass and cello before i ever picked up guitar was a godsend guitar is so much easier once you can play a fretless instrument
My word..yes you could play the majority of this on a six string...the bits that dont use the bottom two strings that is.most stanswrd open chords dont uee the low E too.Am, A, C, F, D ad Infinitum. .The strings are there to express yourself when needed. There's a lot of bore on the net about 7, 8 string guitars. Wish I had the cash for a high rnd one.
Thinking about getting some guitar lessons still intermediate. Should I get a 8 string while having my 6 or should learn theory first before getting to 8?
Joskun Tosin said multiple times that you should be comfortable with your fretboard on a 6 six strings before anything else. He said he even played with a 7 strings guitar for 5 or 6 years before even thinking about adding the 8 string. In my opinion if your plan is to get a 8 string guitar some day, I'd better be comfortable with the 7 string first (not just for low rythm parts but also for chord voicings) and then add the 8 string. But hey, do what you want mate.
+ifeelitbro I would entirely whole heatedly agee. He's just using the extra strings as an extension of a foundation of his knowledge. Learn all the positions of Maj/min I do 3 note per, but the caged sys has it's uses. See how pentatonics sit in each, and the arpeggios. If you do that, the inversion chords are just simple.
Yeah some people tune the 8 string differently though like Rusty Cooley does the High A thing B E A D G B E A I've heard of some bands taking it a step further and trying to get 2 higher strings E A D G B E A D I don't understand the use for lower tunings though, in my opinion the low F# or low E like some people do is low enough for a good enough Low end.
Amazing video, first and foremost. But secondly, if the song he is playing starts with a BMaj7, why does he say he plays both Ab minor 7 and C# minor? I realize there are things such as enharmonic notes, but if he is playing in the Key of B Major, shouldn't they be G# minor 7 and C# minor, or if he's choosing to play in the dreadful Cb major, wouldn't it be Ab minor 7 and Db minor? Including both a #'d chord and a b'd chord that both occur naturally in the key, to me, seems weird/confusing.
Wish he showed next part of point to point... what im playing doesn't seem to match, especially the timing. In fact my timing is off for the whole song 🤨
He plays an 8 string guitar, same strings as a 6 string with two extra bass strings, a B and an F#. There's not a big need for bass in bands that use 7 and 8 string guitars all the time because the guitars really blend the two instruments.
Seem's like doing Barre chords would be pretty difficult. That is unless you have large long fingers of coarse. I wonder if it would lead to carpel tunnel syndrome eventually.
I never really cared too much for 8 string guitars. I get the idea behind having more strings for the extra fullness but it just kinda seems like overkill to me
I'm 6'1 and have short fingers compared for my size. I know plenty of people shorter than I that have larger hands. That being said I can play an 8 string with a 28" scale perfectly fine.
I wouldn't say a bass, but a classical guitar would be closer. I don't have big hands either, I honestly can't tell you why I like wide necks, they just seem more comfortable and natural to me.
is he seriously just showing the most basic fucking chord voicings that any intermediate player who takes a few lessons would learn? THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR PLAYING SOME CHORDS.

rg2228 doesnt have dimarzio pickups, parallel pickup settings and a wenge neck...and such a cool look so it's definitely worth the 2200$ more
I love that tuning

It's just a locking bridge, so there's no string slippage behind the nut, and he can fine tune once it's locked down. It doesn't function as a tremolo
