On a warm Vancouver day in June 1989, the bound and bruised body of a woman was found in the yard of an abandoned house. Police quickly determined that she had committed suicide, but her six-year history of receiving threatening phone calls and abusive stalking leaves us asking who killed Cindy James?

You guys are always so respectful to the lives of the people in these stories, you always make sure to emphasize that they were real genuine people, not just some fictional horror story. It's nice to see such respect.
👏👏👏👏👏👏
There is a lot to love about this channel, and you just emphasized the part that offers respect for them. I thank you for putting it into words.
True
Except they got the very first point wrong, she was found naked (without signs of rape) with her hands tied behind her back and her cause of death was beatings not suicide
Her cause of death was morphine and other drugs. She overdosed.
She was crazy and did these things to herself after her divorce
I don't know which is creepier, someone did this to her or she did all of it herself.
PTSD and unknown self harm is a horrible thing.
Stalked by your own inner daemons.
Well, the phone call audio sounds female
Both are fucked up in their own special ways
I just meant in general, not really this specific case.
But it could well be that most of it was that cause with some creep/creeps taking advantage of a vulnerable person at times.
It's the animals that I find especially disturbing. She harmed her own dog and killed a couple of cats. So hard to picture a nurse committing such brutal acts. This whole case is deeply troubling.
Man, who runs all of these bad police stations?! Chief Wiggum?!
Yeah, either that or the policeman was just a bunch of cats taped together.
Or three midgets in a trenchcoat.
Something's not right about it, I'll say that much.
I can kinda understand them getting sick of Cindy's calls, it's a proper 'Boy who cried wolf' situation from their perspective.
Yes I totally agree! RCMP royally fucked this one up!
lol right
What an awesome Simpsons reference! Good job!
Were these the same officers that said that the reporter that was found stuffed in a duffel bag put himself in there?
Lol I was thinking the exact same thing...glad to see I’m not the only one
Wait what?
@@anecnhoj572 a reporter was found in his bathtub, stuffed into a large duffel bag, and the zipper was locked from the outside.
The police called it a suicide.
Same police that refused to investigate the claims of many women who reported assaults and failed attempted murders by Robert Pickton
And that ruled the Johnny Gosch case a runaway
I wonder if Roy's ex-wife was questioned. Sounded like a woman on the phone, if that is the real audio.
It's the actual call 👍🏻
Thought the same thing for a sec, but it had been 16-17 years since they split by that point, she would have done something long before then.
I thought that it could be her as well, it sounds like a women on the phone, and the spiteful vandalism of the pillows sounds like a woman thing, to get back at someone who wronged them. Maybe she convinced Roy to stay at her house, because she wanted to kill Cindy, and get Roy blamed for it, so she can have revenge on them both?
Either that, or maybe she had a relationship with Roy that she didn't tell anyone even after they split up.
Or perhaps the family in France had a hand in her murder. Maybe on member of the family felt wronged by her leaving, since she was their only friend or something?
Oh, I thought it was an actor. That call is definitely a woman. I don't hear anything about sexual assault in this video, so it would make sense that she was tortured but not sexually assaulted.
Or she was calling herself...
@@kirinmar9306 women hold grudges for fucking ever.
The artwork is absolutely superb. Additionally, the black and white images enhance the storyline. Well done!!! I love this channel!!!
thanks:)
I agree. Terrific sketches!
Just a thought: if the police had already made up their minds that Cindy was mentally unstable and doing these things to herself for whatever reason, perhaps they didn't find any physical evidence because they weren't really looking for any.
I would assume they'd have to treat the car with a full scale investigation since by appearance, it looked like a kidnapping.
They spent over a million dollar on the investigation and never found any evidence other people were involved
Makes sense in the sense of the US police which are all corrupt AF. However, I'm not sure about the Canadian ones.
Gosh what a tormented and demented life this poor woman had, very sad. Well narrated as usual, thanks guys!
Wow. Your comment is one of the very few, if only, that really focuses on the tragedy of someone having to live in such a hellish mental state. Very few comments bother mentioning any king of sympathy towards her or her situation. Poor lady needed help very badly. I'm glad you cared enough to say as much.

Demented? U going a bit overboard there bud

Just how does one tie a stocking around their neck and hogtie themselves while overdosed on drugs?
@sum body yes there is, it's bee reclassified as Dissociative identity disorder.
Id imagine you cant get very far between injection and overdose so wheres the syringe?
@@viciousKev people OD all the time when taking meds orally. Didn't have to be injected. So like a prior comment above said, after swallowing the drugs, it would take at least a few mi utes before they kicked in. Plenty of time to do what needed doing. IF that is what happened.
@sum body i agree. I think everyone has different sides to them. Naturally
@@tempusername-l5d
Agreed. The drugs and hogtie can for sure be explained, but the fact there was regularly a sock around her neck that left marks makes this far more suspect. Though it also feels like overkill really, so it could have been that it was tied around first, then when that didn't work, they went with drugs and hogtie without removing it. That's just an idea from me though, cause it's clear the second city's police weren't giving the case the respect or attention it needed.
Suicide by hogtiing? Wow, what a strange case.
Not if you're the Hong Kong police department.
Must have known the Clintons.
how do you even DO that?
She didn't die from the hogtie. She also could found someone to hogtie her.

Bedtime Stories is truly becoming my favorite channel on you tube. It really is almost perfect.
Agreed .It's most definitely one of the few worthwhile channels out there.
I am a simple man. i see a new bed time stories. I click like and then watch.
So she had a troubled childhood (often correlated with psychopathy), was clinically diagnosed a psychopath, had a history of doing shit like writing abusive letters to her partner from her 'mother' that she actually wrote herself among other things but most people in the comments are still thinking this wasn't all herself. I guess some people haven't experienced their own Cindys.
Yeah, its very sad, I am glad we live in an age where mental health is being understood better and less people feel guilty about it.
Yeah, that was the first thing I thought. But I'm sure I thought that because I lived with a Cindy James in my lifetime.
You're claiming she hog tied herself?
@@MsSilverTulip She could have. I've watched my brother do it to himself. He tied the ropes first then slipped his hands and feet in.
@@GAshoneybear How did she get to the location where her body was found without her car? I dunno, this story is wild and confusing. I've heard it many times, and each time I hear it I am left feeling the same way...perplexed.
Those phone calls sound like a woman's voice.
it's clearly Cindy James calling herself
It was her.
AlienPrincess ATX when cindy was high on morphine how did she tie herself up? if she tied herself up before she wouldn't be able to take the morphine. Explain? (:
@@artsyeuphoria2773 you can definitely do things high on morphine. Ex heroin addict here. Not saying that is what happened, but... Also if she took them orally, she would have time to do things before the high kicked in. Again, not saying one way or the other, but being on dope doesn't stop someone from being able to function. I worked seven days a week when I was an addict
Thats what i thought.. But i personally think she had a multiple personality disorder.. Its could most likely be a SUICIDE !
The narration, the music, the illustrations, all superb as usual.
A very disturbing and strange case and more food for thought. Thank you.
I appreciate the way you always discuss a subject’s passing with sensitivity for their life and for their surviving loved ones. Thank you!
the thing i love the most about your channel is that you're always so respectful of the people you're talking about. i think that's a very important thing that people often forget; these were actual human beings that passed through very hard and terrifying situations, the least we can do is treat their stories with respect and hope that they are resting in peace.
Best, most professional channel on the paranormal. Pure art. Such a high level of proficiency in the drawings and narration. Amazing.
It took analysis to figure out that the voice on the recording was female?
@Laving : based on your picture, I can only assume you channel spirits and shit.
Yes,it was a woman
I have some questions:
1) How does one hogtie themself while under the influence of morphine?
2) How does one get attacked by someone armed with a knife without a) seeing the attacker b) recieving defensive wounds?
3) How does one tie a stocking around their neck and stab themself in hand and write a note while blacked out?
4) Why was the ex wife not questioned ?
5) Why was the victim calm before the police arrived during the house fire but panicked when they arrived?
1. They have 30 minutes before the morphine takes full effect.
2. They don't (unless they are doing it to themselves).
3. They first write the note, then tie the stocking around their neck, then stab themself in the hand and then black out from the pain.
4. Because the ex ex wife didn't have anything to do with it and didn't care.
5. Because the victim was a psychopath performing a planned and scripted narrative. (aka Acting).
@@reesedaniel5835 That answers that then.
@Death2Life312 She took it orally not injected so it does take 15-30 mins to kick in.
Literally all of that has entirely logical explanations.
The drugs take 30 minutes to take effect if it was taken orally. If she was injected, it’s almost immediate, and she had injection marks…. Though that doesn’t prove she was injected with the morphine specifically.
Morphine also doesn’t cause blackouts, and it’s not hard to fake unconsciousness.
"Otto Hack." That's a brutal name.
Maybe that's why she married Roy Makepeace later.
Its like auto hack. Its scary.
Ah yes, Suicide aka "we don't have any leads to pursue"
Another case closed bois
Oat lord she was a psychopath so who knows
Actually the whole suicide theory sounds quite possible to me.
Cause of death was updated to "unknown"
Or “we refuse to admit we were wrong about her stalking so we’re gonna just go ahead and keep our opinion that she was doing it to herself.”
I had heard this story before. I thought maybe she didn’t do it to herself. But I hadn’t heard the bit about having a “fiancé that committed suicide” or that she had written a letter from her mother disapproving of her relationship. So I think she did to herself for sure now
Don’t believe any BS that came from Makepeace. He changed his story over the years of her behavior. He was involved
@@MosquitoValentineNH Some of his alibis where suspicious too I believe, if I am remembering a documentary I saw on the matter correctly...
Yeah. She was quite delusional. I did a degree in criminology at university. Whether people want to believe it or not, there's a lot of individuals who will eagerly harm themselves or their children for attention and sympathy. Sometimes they go too far and death results.
Allegedly written by her. Nobody knows
Not good enough
A former co-worker was stalked back in the late 80's. It started with phone calls telling her what she'd done through out the day. The calls eventually became obscene. Once that happened, she told her husband and he called the cops. They changed their number several times with the POC would almost always calling when she was alone or if a family member answered (usually one of her kids), he'd ask to speak with her. He'd tell her what she was wearing during the day. Thankfully the police did take it seriously and we're able to successfully trace one of the calls. Turned out it was a out of state trucker had been doing this. He told the cops he alleged just randomly looked in the phone book and called her number. That he was just "bored" since he stay in a near by motel when he'd be in town for deliveries.
Then how did he know what she did throughout the day
@@ElComandanteR7 They had no idea. He some how discovered where she lived and looked like. This happened in San Ysidro, Ca. which is a border town. Lots of truckers, construction companies, tourist, etc. come and go. There's a shit ton of motels here and near by. That and the gross shit he'd started telling her was what finally prompted her to speak up. This happened with in a span of almost a year. He'd call incessantly in 2-3 week increments than go silent for 1 - 2 months. Since changing their phone number didn't help, they set up an answering machine. They later learned he'd just get the new number from the phone book. They let all their family, friends and neighbors know what was going on.
@Ana Lou No, it was some random asshole. Sorry if my writing wasn't clear.
Do stalkers stalk out of boredom?
@@Fern8 That's the BS answer the trucker gave to police. Who knows why stalkers do their stalking.
Amazing how parents can screw up their children's lives!
I don't know about Canada, but in America a common quote among military personnel is "If we wanted you to have a wife, we would've issued you one." Indeed, the military is rough on marriage and family life, with the constant relocating being just one major factor.
In Britain Military Marriage is definitely considered, “Not for everyone” & “A unique marriage experience”. I know that some aspects (relocation, time apart etc) can make it quite challenging.
The armed forces don’t have the reputation for taking the “Adultery, don’t do it!” Wedding vow very seriously. I grew-up in a military town…
Why anyone would want to join the military I've no idea
I would say the recorded female voice was Cindy’s. It seems almost painfully obvious that she was doing it herself. Having the type of personality that needs the attention that comes with being a victim is clear in the letter supposedly from her mother that she had written. That letter was to make Roy feel guilty, and for other friends to look at and think that cindy was in fact being taken advantage of. Also, the idea that the officer was the culprit is kind of ridiculous considering he hadn’t even met her when the harassment started. Once you add these to the many diagnosis’s she received when hospitalized, I’d say she killed herself, possibly accidentally. I think the drugs she took was for after she was “rescued”, so blood analysis would show she had drugs in her system, so she could again claim no memory as she had been drugged.
I would say that this personality defect came from not learning how to properly form attachments in childhood because of all the moving around, plus the distant parents. It wouldn’t surprise me if the only time her father seemed concerned about her as a child was when something happened to her, such as a serious or semi-serious injury. It might only have been once, an illness or something, but she quickly learned that the best way to get attention was by being the victim.
That's how I feel. And based on my own research and talking to some professionals that's what their theory was too.
absolutely agree
10/10 agree
Cari Dennis couldn’t agree more. She was a psychopath and I think she did it for attention and because she was crazy.
You care to explain how she tied her hands behind her back? Especially in a manner an expert called impossible to do by herself?
Sounds like someone in the police force is involved.
or knew something and didn't want to get involved
Police couldn't help her. Inside job
Seriously, they blamed her for traumatizing
I thought so too.
rather paranoid schizophrenia
One of my favorite Unsolved Mysteries segment, really glad you're sharing this story with your subscribers. 😊✌👌
Two videos two weeks in a row--awesome. Any yet again a topic I've encountered many times before, yet still learned new info, and was entertained from start to finish. That's great background research combined with great delivery.
When ever I hear cases like this, I believe the killer is either somebody in power, a local bigwig or somebody related to either. If that call at 7:11 is a genuine recording,it sounded like a woman to me.
The voice was very much of a female. And that's the biggest evidence that she did this to herself, because she claimed that it was her exhusband hunting her. What boggles mind is the why and how.
Xiaomin L Feador unless the husband had a partner in crimes that was a woman
The more you listen carefully it is a woman disguising her voice and the scary part is that she wasn't ever Apprehended by the authorities for the possibility of her killing this individual. They knew how to do the perfect crime and get away with it. It will always remain a cold case and nothing more can be said sadly.
I always look forward to your vids! Between the art, the narration, the way you handle dark subject matter, and the amazingly well written scripts, yours are some of the best on UA-cam.

One of your best works. I like the ending with the rain ☔ and reminded me of the weather in British Columbia. Maybe with all video surveillance the case would be resolved today. But in those days it was rare.
I am a former drug user, and I know from countless ingestions that it takes at least 40 minutes for opiates to work when ingested, and that is on an empty stomach, no matter how much you take. She poked her arm with a pin, and ate the pills. She was a nurse and had access to pills. She just got the dose wrong. Also, "multiple personalities" is not what people think it is, that is a fantasy. Dissociative disease doesn't work like most people think, or how the movies portrayed, like that silly Cybil movie or the M Night Shammallama movie.
I have dove pretty deep into this case previously, including hearing numerous recorded calls she made, and she did that to herself. Period. End of story. Munchausen by proxy. Granted, the case is a bit creepy, and cops are often inept, but in this case they were bang on. Her childhood fits into her MO as well, like a glove, and just highlights the fact that she did this to herself for attention.
How do u hogtie yourself behind your own back?

I don't know how else to say this but I came across this channel a month ago and I've watched every single video (some more than once). So please, please don't stop making videos! They're brilliant
It sounds to me like Cindy really was disturbed and emotionally blackmailed McBride into helping her stage all of this and cover her tracks, with things just going wrong on the last occasion.
I don't think McBride was involved. Unless she secretly knew him before the attacks started. Cindy moved into Mcbride's jurisdiction after the attacks already started.
🎯🎯🎯
I feel like she was just sadly a disturbed woman, I thought it seemed odd that the voice in the message machine sounded like a middle-aged woman imitating a deep voice, but it's still the police officers job to protect people, and they sure botched this.
They spent $1 million + on HER case alone in the 1980s. They surveyed her constantly.
I have my doubts. I don’t really know if it’s possible to hogtie yourself while on a heavy amount of drugs. There’s also the voice recording. I heard a sample of the voice recording on a LordanArts video and I heard a woman’s voice clearly. First of all do we have a voice recording of the victim’s voice? If so it would be a simple matter of comparing the voice samples to see if they match up. However if there are differences then it would call into question a couple of things. Second how severe was her mental condition? I have an anxiety disorder and I have thought I heard a few things but I chalk it up to my brain screwing with me. I think this a case where patient confidentiality needs to be broken. Third how long does it exactly take to tie yourself up while drugged? Fourth do we have a timeline of her death? This ties in with the the tying up of oneself question. All in all I think she might have indeed been stalked and her stalker killed her. If so then they probably got away with murder, all because they chose to target a woman with a mental condition.
@@mirandagoldstine8548 it is possible if you tie yourself up immediately after ingesting the drug. Depending on the ingestion method, it can be a slow absorption.

You guys.....this channel is something special I swear. It's not really a horror in a todays meaning. By the way...,great job on the video!
I also believe it was an authority figure. They hold way more information than anyone else, especially when having to protect someone.
Plenty of people who seek power over others have gone into forces like the police just to get that morbid happiness in being in control. This individual let her live unbearably long in fear and terror, which is key to those who seek dominance over others. They wanted her to suffer for as long as possible until they had enough of her, and her mental issues were likely what made her a target as she would easily fall into panic and other forms of stress.
I can only hope this attacker is long dead.
TopsyTriceratops well if you look at the evidence, it seems like she committed self harm for attention from police
@@thanoshotwheel4208 She was very sick, and did the entire thing herself for attention and as part of her illness.
Yeah, if she had done it all herself than her attacker IS long dead.
When she got all these phone calls, she was threatened that if she tells anything about them, they'll come for her family. But there was a time where she had enough... she knew exactly who her attackers were and was going to reveal everything to Ozzie - the private investigator who looked out for her. They planned a day to talk... but the conversation never happened. It was too late. She died a few days later. The attackers knew about it and killed her.
RIP Cindy James !! Amazing videos and best channel on You Tube. Keep up the great work.
New sub here 👍 been binge watchin these videos since finding this channel earlier today, awesome quality
highway man that’s what I was like when I first discovered the channel! Rewatching them, I’ve been noticing points I missed on the first listen too
The empathy and respect with which you've covered this case were truly moving, because so often we see tragic cases being exploited for amusement, or for the love of the macabre. But your content is so sensible, and it may be a truly low bar considering this is a gesture of human decency, but you've won my respect❤ May Cindy rest in peace and hopefully there will be some form of closure for the family and loved ones
Well Done! I like the last two theories the most as I was thinking the same from the very beginning... writing her husband a note alleging its from her mother seems like an indication of strange attention getting...
Great narration! I enjoyed listening to this case. Keep up the good work!
I remember seeing this case when I was a kid on Unsolved Mysteries. The voice, though sounding feminine to me, creeped me the hell out as a kid.
Poor Cindy, I hope she's in a better place.
The artwork is AWESOME ❤️
I love how objective this channel is when relaying True Crime cases. Even with speculation, there’s a “Devil’s Advocate” approach to discussing it. It’s a level of awareness not all creators have when bringing these horrific tales to our attention, and rightfully so. It’s not easy to keep your emotions harnessed when retelling these tales. Thank you for what you do, and how you do it. ❤️
Could it be that she's doing some of these to herself?
This channel deserves so much more subs. They cover mostly real actual stories most of the time… what’s creepy is how most of these stories are never solved.
Bravo! Bravo! Another excellent and engrossing video, thank you.
tragic story, thanx for highlighting it. You tell all these stories well, and with heart for the various victims in these cases. Kudos to you.
This case always had bothered me when I was a bit younger and I avoided it because it creeped me out so much. That's only because I believed someone was doing this to Cindy. But as I researched it more, it became apparent that she may have been setting this up herself and she had mental health issues. Now it doesnt seem so creepy anymore. Moreso sad that Cindy couldnt get the help she needed
It also means that Cindy herself was a very dangerous person. If she did all this like killing cats, setting her friend's house on fire where she put the lives of two people in danger, making her parents worried to death, sending creepy voicemails to her ex husband, and I think she did all of that, then she deserves no sympathy.
I have to say because of your channel name "Bedtime Stories" I was under the (wrong) impression that your channel was more creepy pasta and storytime based. I'm glad I finally checked out the channel and am happy to see true crime featured! Really appreciating the text on the screen as well, it's a small but significant addition that I wish more creators would consider!
What an extremely sad, odd, creepy case. Oh, I hope I am still alive when this case is finally solved. TY for this :)
So happy a new one is out. Really needed to relax tonight, and your videos are the best for this. TYVM!!!!
"Someone would have eventually blown the whistle" (laughs in likely to be a victim of police violence)
The police almost never break their codes of silence. When there are whistle blowers in police departments, they frequently report extreme hostility from former coworkers, and some report violent or even life threatening incidents. Somewhere around 40% of cops get reported for domestic abuse- a number which has to be much higher, as reports are generally less than actuality. A police officer stalking and killing a woman with his department hiding it is extremely likely in my mind.
I've heard this story, but I looking for a detailed account. You have gave an extremely thorough investigation. That was a great video. Thank you!
About half way through this video it started to remind me of an account I had read years earlier called "The Many Faces of Audrey Anne Wilder" about a lady who suffered from multiple personality disorder brought about by traumatic events during her childhood...she would often blackout and come to miles away, perhaps in her car, wearing clothes and makeup she didn't own amongst other strange events....Cindy James' story seems similar in many ways and I think she was suffering from some mental illness that caused these events.
Bravo guys! You knock it out the park with every video. I love how you cover all possible theories and bring logic to arguments. Without a doubt my favourite UA-cam channel
Well,.. that was one of the strangest cases I've listened to. I really don't know what to think.
Very well done as always. I think this case was also covered many years ago on the TV program, 'Unsolved Mysteries'.
I think that she made it up to a point where it piss the wrong person off and it got her killed and covered up. I mean your life is in danger to a point where security camera still isn’t an option. Maybe a certain someone was tired of hearing it and knew he could get away with it
Wow. I never thought of this theory. Maybe this person was a cop, and the cop got mad they had to keep coming out 2 the scene and nobody was there. Or it could have been anybody in her life who she rubbed the wrong way. THAT makes sense.
I really appreciate the way you treat these victims as humans, not just titillating stories to be retold.
She was actually living and died in Richmond B.C, not Vancouver B.C. Creepy to know the exact streets of where she lived and died.
He did say she moved to Richmond before she died, why are you correcting?
Awesomeeee just when I get worried cause your away for so long you come back with two great ones, this story is super interesting ever since it was highlighted on unsolved mysteries back in mid or early 90s.awesome choice man well done!.Love this channel.
Very suspicious that the harassment happened to her only after she left her controlling husband who didn't want her to leave. He was also a medical professional and had access to drugs, particularly morphine based injectables. He probably influenced the police, because he was a doctor, that his wife was nuts. therefore prejudicing them against her.
Yay! A new bedtime stories video! Perfect way to start the night :).
Wonderful channel this is.
My favourite alongside Deadbug.
Now...dim the lights...pour a glass of claret...and begin :)
Whats deadbug, Is it similar to this?
@@Chezbo Hey man.
Deadbug is mind blowing.
He covers serial killers and brutal murders from around the world...many in China and Japan...he doesn't do the obvious ones.
His editing, music and narration is pure art.
Be warned though its not for the thin skinned.
I know what you're thinking...
@@geminisundone cool ill check it out
Check out Lutch Green too. Creepy and mysterious stuff!
Your pretty much the only narrator out there on UA-cam I can stand to listen to for more than a few videos.
I would be very interested to know who many patients in Cindy's charge died over the years.
Yes. Interesting.
It is so good that you treat all your featured people and their families with so much respect. M.
When murders are called suicide and they're like this. Rest assured there are officers involved
Damn, that phone call sent chills through my body
Thanks pulchchritud of you and endeavors sponsoring the Outstanding narratives and the preternatural.Bliss.
Another great video and story. Absolutely Fantastic.
