      @@rickli84 It's great for hiking, and I'm using it for that too, however... For a serious hike I'm still using my trusty eTrex 20 handheld unit. The size of the screen and details on the map are huge advantage and when it comes to that handheld units have a big advantage. Having said that, if you not worry about map and waypoints too much, Instinct will perform just fine.

    Dear Sir. Thank you for the long term review. Very useful. I have a few questions about its durability as a result of exposure to these conditions: (1) I work on my cars a lot and it would get exposed to knocks, possible scratching, light grease, oil, etc. (2) I swim in the ocean - would the salt water affect it? Is the screen visible in bright sunlight with a polarized sunglasses? Is the screen on all the time? thank you.

    • @TommysOutdoors
      @TommysOutdoors  4 роки тому +31

      Hi Anil, it is okay for swimming in salt water. Done it and also when out fishing it gets into the saltwater regularly. No problem but it's a good idea to give it a rinse afterwards under the shower to prevent salt buildup overtime. But I guess that goes for anything that has a contact with saltwater. You can clearly see the dial with polarized glasses although its because it's "in sync" with them. If you turn the watch 90 degree anti-clockwise you won't see the screen in polaroids but that would not happen unless you do it on purpose. The screen is on all the time. As for oil resistance and knocks, it's build to military standards for this sort of environmental exposure so it should be okay but I did not tested oil and grease and stuff. Surely I knock it around a lot though, and I don't see any visible scratches etc. Hope that helps.

    • @chriswright9096
      @chriswright9096 3 роки тому

      Yes. Your case seems particularly bad. But I generally reckon on 18 months being the useful life of a GPS sports watch (if it is well used - lots of recording of activities and wearing it all the time). The battery life after charging gradually goes down though this period until finally its time for a new watch. This occurs before the strap or buttons wear out. I don't think this is specifically a Garmin issue. Probably the same on all sports watches of this general type.

    I'm thinking of getting one. I hope it will withstand abuse, because i hunt wild boars, fish, trek as well as well as blacksmithing on a hobby basis. What i'm sorta curious about is if there's enough functionality in it to warrant a buy over just any old rugged plain watch? For hunting i'd like to get air pressure, wind direction, tracking of dogs and hunting mates and such.

    • @TommysOutdoors
      @TommysOutdoors  4 роки тому +3

      I think it is exactly made for this use case. I'm using it mainly for hunting and fishing + tracking my basic fitness and recovery activities. It will be rugged plenty enough. Main functionality over plain rugged is access to Garmin Connect platform and all it's tracking features. Plus of course GPS unit. As for air pressure I wouldn't count on the exact value but surely it indicates trends very well. For wind direction your best bet is powder indicator for $3.99 on eBay 😉. The watch has a widget for tracking dogs but of course you need a gps collar and compatible handheld unit. The watch with pull dog tracking data from handheld unit. As for tracking hunting mates you can put one of the dog collars on them LOL. All the best buddy. 👊

      I wouldn't worry about the memory and as for the updates, after awhile these devices don't really need any more updates. The only thing to worry imo is battery life but Garmin traditionally is pretty good in this department (their bike computers function 10+ years without problems). Having said that, it's an electronic device with a lifespan of an electronic device and it won't act as a watch that you can pass down the generations to your son and then grandson...

    • @TeoSluga
      @TeoSluga 4 роки тому +1

      The main difference is that Instinct is so much more comfortable to wear. That is most important when running or during everyday wearing.... Also users usually do not use all the capabilities that Fenix can offer, thus paying extra for nothing...

    • @TommysOutdoors
      @TommysOutdoors  4 роки тому +1

      The main reason was that Fenix was too fragile and brittle for me. I got glass shattered on my Fenix 3 with a relatively minor accident while on MTB. Should it have a bezel that would protect the glass nothing would happen. But we know that in Fenix the glass is exposed. So I replaced it with Fenix 5. Then when coming back from a hunt, back in the car I noticed that the glass was broken, I don't even have an idea how could it happen as I have never registered anything hitting it or me. But that was it. Instinct is ruggedized and that's it's the main advantage over Fenix. At least for me.

Because it's a sportwatch. You don't have to look after it. I would go insane, if I would have a Marq, and accidentally scratch the bezel. With this one? Who cares! Faulty Altimeter is an issue. My first run. March 2020 updates. Elevation failed badly. According to Instinct I fell of the cliff during my short 3k run. The cliff was 90 meters tall. And then I climbed back on top. None of this really happened. Dissapointed.

    • @TommysOutdoors
      @TommysOutdoors  4 роки тому +2

      These things do happen. Mind you that the altimeter is based on air pressure, so any changes will impact the reading. It happened to me on a cycle when I rode into weather front and the temp dropped from 15 C to about -1 C in a matter of minutes and about 30 later got back to normal. On the reading I saw a massive elevation bump. In those cases you need to use computer software after you downloaded your track to adjust for topo data on the map. It's just the way it works and things like that can happen from time to time.

    Just bought the Garmin Instinct Solar after watching this video. Thank you for the info you provided. Although I have one minor problem which I faced with my unit. The Weather Widget shows the precipitation level and air speed as 0, which from what I checked on my Android phone, wasn't correct. • @TommysOutdoors
      @TommysOutdoors  3 роки тому +5

      First, you are right, the weather data is pulled from the Garmin Connect App and it all depends on what weather station it is pulling its data. Possibly, that it can be affected by eg VPN you running on your phone - I'm not sure. Second - I wouldn't expect any great accuracy from this widget. These weather stations usually cover a fairly large area and your local conditions might vary. Also comparing weather data from two different weather models will usually render some differences.

    I've been using the Instinct for 14 months also, wearing it day and night. It shows no usage at all on the wrist band, no filth is cloggin up the barometer or connection port.
    The only trouble I have for a little more than a month now is that it doesn't automatically sync all data anymore to Garmin Connect (all software updates are automatically installed, so I have the latest version).
    Normally, I connect it to my laptop with the cable every time I come home from an activity (mostly bike rides). When connecting Garmin Express launches and syncs the activities and all other measured data since the last synchronisation (daily steps, floors up/down, sleep times and zones, etc.). The last few weeks, it only uploads my activities and the data of the day I connect it. It no longer automatically syncs the previous days data. This has to be done manually by uploading the FIT-files in Garmin Express from the Monitor and Sleep maps.
    I've been in touch with the Help department of Garmin, who advised me to delete the maps 'Activities', 'Monitor' and 'Sleep', but this did not resolve my problem.
    Just now, I did a factory reset. Maybe that works out? I'll find it out in the next few days. I was reluctant to do this factory reset, because it loses all previous settings (all the data screens, widgets, etc.).
    But I still recommend the Instinct. Especially the battery life is excellent. When you just wear the Instinct as a watch, without starting and recording an activity, the battery lasts 2 weeks! With an activity (gps enabled, etc) I still haven't completely used the battery, even with activities up to 10-11 hours. And charging the battery is very quick: less than half an hour!

    Exchanged the instinct for a Fitbit v2. The Fitbit is a much better option .

      I guess it depends on a use case.

      Switching from a Charge 4 to an Instinct Solar. Fitbit is finicky with sharing data between other fitness platforms... there are some 3rd party apps but gets a little tedious. Charge 4 is a great fitness tracker overall, but I also cycle and this will sync with Garmin's platform along with my biking data. Also, Charge4 screen is difficult to see outside and doesn't really seem to be a training watch... more of what it entails... overall fitness tracker... I hope the Instinct lives up to my expectations... I'll definitely be looking forward to much improved battery life. I can get about three days out of my Charge 4 but don't like pushing the battery to lower limits... nothing worst than a battery going dead while out on a run, etc.

      I'm not even into fitness and an looking into Garmin as a smart watch because the notifications stay on the screen for more than a few seconds and that's important to me. Looks like Garmin is one of the only companies that understands that people can't always look at a notification immediately. If I have to start pressing buttons to find the notification that I missed then I might as well take out my phone.

    Garmin is now under attack that has locked user data data being compromised. They might ask for ransomware...

      Ugly stuff, let's hope they'll recover from this soon.
