This is the live set that introduced the world to Santana. They were unknown to the mainstream prior to this.
I think they got signed from this .
Yep
Sir, you are the only person with whom I’ve watched a total reaction to this masterpiece ….drummer was virtually a child…as always respectful reaction..A+
I forget that this was their introduction. They were always so good you’d think they were always there.
@@sst3d Michael Shreve on drums was just slight...not a child!
Great job! You are one of only a few who showed the full version, unedited, un shortened, with full drum solo. This is sooooo good. And of course there is the story that Carlos Santana, on guitar, was hi on acid during this. Check out the full story.
I made sure he knew what version to watch, I nearly threatened him if he did the short one. Gotta love JM
Mescaline. He said his guitar turned into a snake.
Everyone was on psychedelics that weekend
@@jvs333 Including us, and we were not even there.
@@AliasMark69 I remember sitting in Tom’s room high as kites listening to Moody Blues in the dark (Days of Future Past), just peacefully tripping
The drum kit young Mike Shrieve is playing here now resides in The Musicians Hall of Fame here in Nashville TN.
.....and I believe Mike is only 17 years old here ! ✌️🙂
I believe Mike was the youngest to perform at Woodstock.
I wonder what happened to him
@@danieldagonjr6102 He became one of the top session drummers in the world. Played with everyone from the Rolling Stones to Steve Winwood to Todd Rundgren to Sammy Haggar in Hagar Schon Aaronson Shrieve. Shrieve also became a well-regarded film composer, including Apollo 13. In addition to solo work, the past 10 years he plays in a jazz fusion band in Seattle.
@@jamesrawlins735 Huge Shrieve fan! Played on the band's first seven albums from 1969 to 1974.
Grandpa's generation was pretty wild, huh??? ✌ 🤣👌
Can you believe that drummer was about 19 years old? A baby!!! 🔥
Pretty sure he was only 18. Unreal.
He was 20 at Woodstock....Michael Shrieve. Drummer. Birthday July 6, 1949
@@AliasMark69 TY for setting the record straight!
Still the youngest performer at Woodstock!
You ought to see Michael Shrieve’s drum solo on Soul Sacrifice in 1970 at Tanglewood. It leaves his Woodstock version in the dust.
I'm glad you did the "longer" version with the entire drum solo, even if it still isn't the full version.
The second organ solo is missing here.
The full version is about 12 minutes.
You can find it on YT but only as audio without any footage.
AND every band member was *TRIPPING BALLS on ACID* during that performance. .
Check it out. . Santana has talked about it many times. . They got high, thinking they would be playing HOURS later. . Suddenly they had to get up and play while high as hell. . .
THIS is what happened!!!
AND the drummer was a high school student who skipped school to be at the gig
Well done on using the unedited version that included this amazing drum solo in full.
A super drummer, he was only about 17 there and he had a great career ahead of him. Carlos Santana is the bomb.
The drummer who was killing it on his drum kit was 20 years old at the time
Love that you showed the full video without interruptions and commenting till the end. The only thing that will make it better is keeping your image smaller and increasing the image of the actual video.
I like it already: You found the proper drum solo one, which few do! Thank you also for getting the volume gain high enough ... sometimes it's low. A super band listening to one another.
Santana's 1st album was still 2 weeks from being released so nobody knew who they were on this day. They did leave with 400,000 new fans tho!! Wonderful performance and reaction. Also need to do Joe Cocker's Woodstock performance of "A Little Help From My Friends". His backup singers couldn't get to the stage on time so his guitar players had to do the backup vocals! Joe's performances are always amazing!
San Francisco and Northern California knew who they were
@@jvs333 Yeah, locals always do. I remember Grand Funk Railroad before they became known world-wide
The debut album changed my life. My consciousness.
they had 2 released
About the back-up singers; that would explain it...
Many say this is the best performance at Woodstock. There were many like Hendrix, But hard to argue against this show..... AWESOME
500,000 people introduced to this magician
Woodstock Music and Art Fair. The promoters were in over their head and called Bil Graham to come help and he said he was bringing a band he managed to perform in exchange, Santana. Over time Santana has employed 70 different musicians but not all at once.
I've had the extreme pleasure of seeing Santana Live do this song 4 times.... WOW every time.
Oh yeah. Saw them do it live in 1972. Still love Santana.
The "dude on the guitar" is the legendary Carlos Santana, with Greg Rollie on the cosmic Hammond B3 organ and a 20-year-old Mike Shrieve on drums. The fact that Carlos plays guitar solos for the ages here is even more remarkable because he was tripping out at the time on LSD and he said the neck of his guitar looked like a rubber snake!
Besides the over 400,000 that saw this live, when the "Woodstock" movie came out MILLIONS found out who Santana is. A Legend was made on the BIG Screen with great sound where I saw it.
300,000
@@cravinbob How many people went to Woodstock? Although there is no official count for the number of people who attended the historic music event, it is estimated that nearly 500,000 people were present at Woodstock '69 over the course of the 4-day festival.
"Guy On Organ"... Greg Rollie. later formed the great rock band "Journey"... in your future soon.
I own a Red Gibson SG Guitar just like that one. Love It.
So many people have the Drummer age wrong, saying he was only 17, or 19. He had just turned 20 at Woodstock...... Michael Shrieve. Drummer. Birthday July 6, 1949
Did you know that Carlos was performing while higher than a kite, as the pro that he was, he played so masterfully.
Apparently, it was other musicians there that had to tell him how he sounded, which was all positive, he had no idea, with the snake and all.
You know what this performance is lacking???..... neither do I. It has everything it needed to become what it is today. Firmly planted in Classic Rock History as a Iconic Must See before you die..
The drummer is Michael Shrieve. He was 19 at the time. Carlos couldn't look at his guitar's fingerboard because he had dropped acid before the concert and was seeing snakes crawling all over it.
Carlos Santana on guitar, Greg Rollie on organ, the incredible rhythm section: Jose “Chepito” Areas, Michael Carabello, Marcus Malone. David Brown, Bass & of course, the 20 year old Michael Shrieve on drums!
"Whoever the guy is on the guitar..." 🤣I love watching young folks react to music from back in the day.
I just smile
They weren’t supposed to be on stage at this time; they were scheduled for later in the day, but other groups that were supposed to be on were stuck in the huge traffic jam that half a million people developed. So they were pushed on the stage. Which at the time their acid trip just kicked in just as they got on stage.
Nice reaction, bro. Thanks for watching the long version!
Stay at Woodstock and watch Jimi Hendrix's decade defining version of the National Anthem. OMG...he makes that upside down Fender bring the sounds of the Vietnam war! And if you get the right version, at the end you get to see Jimi defending it on a talk show... beautiful! And not to be missed. Promise!
Martin Scorsese was one of the editors. This was just two years before he started to make his name as a director.
"NAKED DUDES"... This entire weekend was 100% RAW and Organic. Nothing Fake or Un-Natural about any of it. A Once In A Lifetime Experience for all that were there.
Woodstock was so amazing ....... Santa was a unknown band when they preformed this at Woodstock .... But right after that they were world known . ALSO check OUT Joe Cocker singing the Beatles hit ...... A LITTLE HELP FROM MY FRIENDS ........ This and Santa stole the show
As far as I am concerned this was the best lineup that Santana ever had: Carlos Santana, guitar and cowbell; Greg Rollie, organ and maracas; Dave Brown, bass; Michael Shrieve, drums; Mike Carabello, congas; Jose 'Chepito' Areas, congas and timbales. They kicked ass seven ways from Sunday on this one.
One of the best from Woodstock. I, unfortunately, just got back home that weekend, after being overseas for 9 months when I was in the Navy, and had no idea what was going on so I missed the whole thing. THANK YOU for play the whole thing without stopping to make some comments (like so many reaction losers do).
They were all so high on acid 😂 great effing music 🔥👵🏼💜☮️
All of them are on LSD. They took it just before the performance because they were not scheduled to go on for several hours. Some bands didn't make it on time and Santana had to go up. They were so fucking high & they created this masterpiece. They are in the zone smiling and loving every minute of this. Carlos has said this in multiple interviews. The organizers expected 50,000 people...they got 500,000.
I was only 8 years old when it happened and it was not that far from where I lived. I grew-up close to the N.Y. state border, I wish I was older.
Nice to see fans who recognize this was the FULL version that people really should see.
Carlos Santana said most everyone in the band had taken LSD just prior to this performance. Santana said that he was hallucinating that his guitar was turning into a snake and was all he could do to control it! Lucky us....What a Great Live Santana footage. Just great. And yes that Drummer was All Over the Place.,
TOO COOL. You are the Best JM. Add this legendary incredible performance to your Santana Playlist with Pride. As they say.... You're The Man. Thanks again.
Do you know what is so crazy about Calos's performance in this set????He was stoned the whole time on acid and hallucinating while still playing like this as mentioned in a previous comment on hear!
Great music and you have Super Moon smile.
CRANK IT UP!!. Hit the out side speaker switch and the Pipe, Drums for this MONSTER... Thanks.
Drummer Michael Shrieve is 20 years old. They thought they had 6 hours before they go on so they took some LSD/Acid. 22 minutes later this happened, they were all TWEAKING on LSD/ACID. Carlos said his guitar was a Snake in his hands. AWESOME.
Truly a great jam tune.
JM.... In The TOP TEN Most Legendary Drum Solos...... Yep
"DUDE ON THE GUITAR"'... The One And Only Carlos Santana. You first watched him have all of Mexico City dancing to "Samba Pa Ti". His Playlist is going to be HUGE!!
Some day explore other Santana INSTRUMENTAL music (after his spiritual awakening) but this was THE BOMB AT WOODSTOCK.
The shrooms had Carlos thinking of his guitar neck as a snake , he said later
Just imagine this is the first time you had ever heard a band this tight and ALIVE, you need to see Santana LIVE. It's a off the chart great
You absolutely know Santana when you hear him, there's no mistaking the Latin sound in his playing. He had a huge song in the 90s called "Smooth" with Rob Thomas from the band Matchbox 20 singing on it. Worth checking out for sure.
But his best music came after his first 3 hard rock albums, when he became spiritually awakened....and way before "Smooth." His albums: Caravanseri, Barboletta, Welcome, Oneness, Moonflower, Festival - especially the instrumentals were his finest works in his career. His music became transendental, intricate fusion, depth of a spiritual journey. Check it out.
All right, graduated in 1979 so yeah, this is my kind of music. Glad you’re enjoying ..it was butt kicking?
This was the best thing they aver did i think thank you
If you want to see an even better Drum Solo/and performance from this band,, this is nearly unbelievable..... Santana - Tanglewood 1970 - Soul Sacrifice
I was there in person that summer... Do you recall (or know) what other groups played at Tanglewood that same summer? I'll give you a hint for two of the bands... "My Generation" and "25-or-6-to-4"... Now THAT was a fun summer of music...
@@AnteroSports Terry Kath guitar solo is legendary, Roger's vocals are iconic.
Hendrix was playing at this festival . Check it out
the drummer - Michael Shrieve(?) - had just turned 20 at the time of the concert/song....
Thank you for reacting to the long version!! 🎵🎼🎶🥁🎤🎙🎸🎹🔥🔥🔥
Thanks for posting/reacting to the entire video. I never tire of watching this performance.
Next up from Woodstock please - Sly and the Family Stone - Want To Take You Higher. Mega phenomenal soul/funk/rock classic!
YES... That was a awesome performance. Sly took everybody HIGHER.
The full version. Thank you!
The full version too! Nice. Great reaction. Subscribed.
20 year old Michael Shrieve kicks but on those drums !!!
Who are these guys???....
Carlos Santana: guitar.
Gregg Rolie: vocals, keyboard.
David Brown: bass.
José "Chepito" Areas: timbales, congas, percussion, trumpet.
Mike Carabello: timbales, congas, percussion.
Mike Shrieve: drums....
They were paid only $2,500, but gained millions of new fans. Shortly after this time Neal Schon - lead and rhythm guitar (1971-1972, 2014-2016) joined the band, but later left with Greg Rolie to form the rock band "Journey". In his career Carlos has recorded or performed with over 100 artist.
drummer was a teen ager.
The late sixties it became obligatory for the bands drummer to a solo at least once a night.
Jerry Garcia gave them acid. They expected to be on later but they were told they were next. They were all tripping for this performance. One of the best at Woodstock if not the best.
Another essential in the immortal jukebox of live performances along with 'Crossroads a la Cream' and "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" by the Allman Brothers Band.
And they were all tripping their brains out on hallucinogens.carlos thought that the neck of his guitar was turning into a snake.
Next Woodstock react should be Crosby, Stills, Nash, first set, "Suite Judy Blue Eyes". Incredible live harmonies.
Your next Santana must be the two songs played Back To Back every time for decades on the radio. the way MILLIONS of us heard it a thousand times.....SANTANA - Black Magic Woman / Oye Como Va...... And Please put all three of your Santana videos in the same Playlist. Thanks
JM... My name is Jimmy. I am 75 years old, heard all these classics before. I am with my friend Mark Tandle (He thinks you're the best)... I want to say I strongly appreciate how you respect the raw talents and artistry from the groups to produce this awesome music. Each note must be played by someones hands with no digital assistance. Just their raw emotions expressed through their soul and voices. GREAT REACTIONS. Good Work... Jimmy G..... "The TREE GUY"
They had dropped acid because they weren't scheduled until after dark.......the schedule changed and they went on next and arguably played one of their best sets. Michael Shrieve the drummer was barely 20. Carlos was only 22!!!
Tripping 😊
I have suggested this song to 12 Reactors including you... 10 have done it so far... 6 said they agree it is their new Favorite Song from.... Bee Gees - :"Bodyguard".
BTW, I watch you on a 75" HD with a serious sound system. Your face is about 18" and that smile is 7 inches wide. you look and sound "Marvelous"
Carlos Santana is the guitarist. The guy on the organ is usually the vocalist.
Dude, the drummer, Michael Shrieve was only 19 in this performance...Carlos Santana on guitar and Greg Rolie (later with Journey) on organ.
Drummer was 20.
The highlight of the entire festival,in my opinion.
Michael Shrieve on drums was only 20 here!
Dude on guitar was Carlos
Carlos was tripping.
Never disappointed with CARLOS🎸🎶
Watch the movie/documentary. You'll love it! ✌
They were higher than a kite😅, on a another note.. they didn't sound anything like this when performing in san Francisco.. credit chepito for his influence to switch them into the Latin rock category, which was unheard of back then.
Great full video though!
And drugs are bad for you? Next witness please! ☮
It seems Santan's time slot got changed and they got put on early. Carlos says he was on acid when they performed and he was scared he wouldn't be able to play.
💥💥💥💥💥💥
The drummer was 19 years old when he did that same age as I
They had all taken a ton of psychedelics about an hour before they went on , cause they wound up having to go on early , Carlos once said in an interview in the middle of this song he thought the neck of his guitar had turned into a serpent 🐍 So he just closed his eyes and went with it ! Everyone has a different opinion about the long version. I consider it too much of a good thing, as I'm not too crazy about Michael Shrieve tapping away endlessly with his chopsticks, bringing the whole performance to a halt.
Can someone tell me, I believe this was filmed by George Lucas.
