Interviewer: is it true you were doing LSD at Woodstock?
Carlos Santana: I was at Woodstock?
lol....right...they was so out of touch (the interviewers) lol
@@SIXX2772 thats all hes got and know about santana (lsd)???? poor guy
@@jacqueline23788 Grow a sense of humor. Jeeeeez.
Maybe they were high but they did their job.
Carlos Santana is the guy playing lead guitar. The drummer was a 17 year old dude who skipped school to drop acid and play drums for Santana
Michael shrieve the drummer was 20 at the time
That's not even close to being true, but it was some funny stuff.
@@joeybigler9413 He must be taking the same shit they were when making that dumb ass comment. Lol
@@fabybaby They were all very young and they were all very awesome.
He had just turned 20 in July, 2nd youngest performer at Woodstock and now one of Rolling Stone's top 10 drummers in the world.
Santana was unknown outside the Bay Area in 1969. The band was paid $750 TOTAL for appearing at Woodstock. But from that day on they were on the A list!
Carlos was trying to control the electric snake guitar.
They're at Woodstock!
The greatest weekend in American history!
"Three days of peace, love and music"!
I cannot understate that Carlos Santana was on acid during this set. Incredible and tasteful
supplied by Jerry Garcia
They all were high on acid.
True that Craig!!!
WOODSTOCK
400,000 people
1969 NY STATE
Bethel is about 40 miles north of me. ☺☻
Before playing this set at Woodstock, Santana took the drug mescaline thinking they weren’t playing until hours later or the next day. They were told they would be going up next. Carlos Santana said he thought his guitar was a snake and it kept trying to get away from him. He also said that’s why he’s making all those facial expressions. The drum solo is cut down in this edition but the full version is legendary.
LSD
The guy smoking a cigarette and playing keyboard is named Gregg Rolie. He sang lead vocals on many of Santana's greatest hits -- "Black Magic Woman", "Oye Como Va", and "Evil Ways" -- before eventually moving on to become a founding member of Journey.
Mike Caetano and now plays in Ringo’s All Starr Band.....
This is true. My cousin Steve actually played drums for them from around 78-85 or so. Actually came back & played in the new Journey band for a short time a few years back but it didn't work out for some reason.
@@laurakali6522 They were suppose to tour this year & one of their stops was suppose to be in Clearwater Florida which is 20 mins from me. But with this virus thing going on I'm sure the whole tour is now cancelled. Bummer.
Gary Smith Oh I know. I work in music. Our industry is in serious trouble.....
@@laurakali6522 oh I how I miss live music! There's nothing like it and I believe it will come back strong if not stronger. I'm doing my bit to help. Already bought tickets to a few events in my area of Philadelphia/Southern New Jersey and I can't wait! I hope all goes well for you & you get back to doing what you love! Take care 😷
You’d asked where this was - it was at Woodstock, still probably the most famous music festival in history. All kinds of movies about it. It was supposed to be in Woodstock, New York but no one wanted it there so it was held in Bethel about 40 miles away.
Santana is the guitar player. Although there were a lot of famous artists in that band. I was at Woodstock. I'm an old hippy but God put me on this earth at the very best time! I still play all this music and I crank it up. My neighbor came over one night and said to me, sue grow up and I said no you!! We had the best music back then !! Thanks for playing that
Carlos Santana lead guitar. They were playing at Woodstock.
What a wonderful combination of African, Caribbean, Cuban, Soul, Blues, Funk, and Rock. According to Carlos Santana, he considers his music mostly influenced by African music. Of course you can probably say that about any musical genre, even classical.
The greatest musical event of all time. 500 thousand people strong. Carlos Santana on lead guitar. He’s a Grammy winner. I was supposed to go but ended up in the Marine Corps during the Vietnam war.
Everyone acts like Carlos is the only band member who took a hit of mescaline before the show. Actually from people who know the whole story " Everyone" playing except one of the 2 conga / bongo players was tripping. Amazing how great they still played. Unreal!
santana said it was LSD in an interview. Similar high tho it’s not that different. Still couldn’t imagine playing that good while tripping let alone performing for 400,000 people at the same time
@@BootyFish I've heard either in interviews from him. Whichever it was that was quite a performance.
Your reactions my friend, are pure gold! And greatly appreciated. You missed one heck of an era for sure.
This is one of the iconic performances at Woodstock and I do mean just one if you dig down deep there are several more Ten Years After, CCR, Joe Cocker, Jimmie Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Crosby Stills and Nash just to name a few and Woodstock was in upstate New York in August of 1969
Santana is both the group.. and, the guitarist.[Carlos Santana]
When I watch this performance, I feel the ENERGY coming up!
One of the greatest jams, if not the greatest, in history. It sends me into orbit every time I see it.
Around 2005, Santana played at the Greek Theater in LA, an outdoor venue. Some friends and I snuck into the hills behind the amphitheater and were partying it up while taking in the concert for free. About 3/4’s through the concert, they shined a blue stage light on us and a couple other groups hanging out, Carlos said, “This song is for the people in the hills!”
I don’t remember what song he played, I just remember he closed out with a killer cover of Coltrane’s “A Love Supreme”. Just wanted to share that great memory.
they cut the shit out of the drum set solo...it's criminal...
Santana is the guitar man, fantistic guitar player and band.
Carlos Santana is lead guitarist. They were at Woodstock N York in a farmers field concert !!
It's like they are making electricity together and you can feel it. It will always be cool seeing several people work together to make music, especially live.
One of the best bands in the 70's
Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock....all Im gonna say...He was the concert closer.ya know (save the best for last) and the highest paid artrist of the day at WoodStock....unfortunately by the end of day 3 when he went only a third of the crowd remained because they had been partied out...was nothing like it before so nobody knew what to expect but the main ICONIC moment of Woodstock was Jimi Hendrix performing his rendition of the Star Spangled Banner Legendary Bro.....ROCK LEGEND 100%
Absolutely right, just wish one of these reactors would play "Machine Gun" from band of Gypsy's" the Filmore show....
@@dougieyou You aint lying man.....I have a paid request for another reactor to react to Power of Soul from the Band of Gypsys at the Filmore ...when its coming have no Idea
@@SIXX2772 Jeff i am a Hendrix devotee I have a collection of t-shirts and have designed my own. I remember the first time I ever saw a pic of him and thought "This guy isn't gonna be here for long" saddest day of my live Sept 18/70. I think "Electric LAdyland" is his masterpiece and ever time I play it I STILL find something I havn't heard before. He was such a gentle soul who knew no colour. He is the frist person I wanna see when I pass over, I know he's out there just floating in space. I could go on forever abour him, but you get the idea...lol
@Jeff Reed I was 8 at Woodstock. Cousins told my folks they were taking me camping. It was sorta true, right? LOL I’ll forever be thankful we decided to stay until the very end!!! And I think I’ll carry the smell of pot on my body to my grave. Even the rain and mud doesn’t wash it off when it’s imbedded into your body. LOL
Santana is the band. Carlos Santana is the guitarist. It was at Woodstock in 1969 a little outside of NYC. One of the most famous music festivals/concerts in history. Over 400,000 people were there. Most famous performance from it (at least in my opinion) is the Jimi Hendrix concert. Legendary.
'69 was a very good year! And Santana only got better..
"Santana III" is a Latino rock tour de force and "Caravanserai" is a fusion masterpiece.
Fun fact: Carlos was on lsd in this performance, he once said he was having a real hard time here cuz the neck of his guitar was turning into a snake
fun fact: shut up mathew

@@drobichaud1000 it’s the truth! It was actually his first time dropping acid too
Got to see Santana in 78 in a small venue...it was great...
I was 16 years old this summer of Woodstock the crowd was estimated to be 500,000! The concert was held in a farmer's field outside of Bethel New York. And it launched the careers of groups like Santana, Crosby Stills Nash & Young, Joe Cocker, Richie Havens and many others! Check out the film Woodstock!
Woodstock! The stuff of legends.
The drummer was Mike Shrieve. When garage bands were around in the mid 60's, Mike Shrieve and Greg Rolie played in a band called William Penn and Pals. Later they joined Santana.
Cool part of the video is at the very end when Bill Graham, one of the promoters, calls Greg Rolie over and tells him he just played for half a million people. Because of the movie now that number is in the many millions.
They were in the zone!!!
Transcendent performance. A rock masterpiece !
The guy on keyboards is Greg Rolie...he is co-founder of Journey!
The guitar player with mustache is Carlos Santana. This performance was at Woodstock, NY in 1969.
God!!! I would kill to have been there. The energy and people!!!
I remember my dad showing me this video when I was a young child and it was the littest thing I had ever seen🔥🔥🔥
Santana playing guitar solo dressed on black. this concert lasted 3 whole days in Woodstock, NY back on 69. He is from Mexico.
One of my favorite songs 😍
We got Latinos jamming with Blacks , jamming with Whites , making beautiful music!. Why can't we have this kinda harmony today?
Carlos said he tried to keep his eyes closed because the neck of his guitar kept turning into a snake when he opened them.
Yes - Incredible playing by every member of the band. .
Then when you research the history of this performance and find out shortly after they arrived at the gig they all got high on LSD, thinking they were due to be on stage in about 6 or 7 hours, when suddenly they were told to go on right away. .
Every member of the band was TRIPPING BALLS on ACID while playing!
Carlos Santana has spoken about it many times, describing how whenever he looked down at his guitar, it looked like a snake, writhing in his hands and it took all his will power to focus and play!
It shows that if you have talent, you can play under almost any conditions!
Carlos Santana was the guitarist that made the faces and he was wearing the black vest. This is from Woodstock a concert in 1969 with an audience of over 500,000 people
Immortal! Lots of work- a soul sacrifice.
They’re at Woodstock playing in front of 500,000 people. Some great performances came out of that concert. Check out the group Ten Years After doing “I’m Going Home” and Joe Cocker “With a Little Help from my Friends”.
Carlos smiling at the end was a classic. He managed to have that moment when he knows the boys nailed that song.
I was 13 YRS old. First time hearing SANTANA ? ...actually more life changing than hearing Hendrix. 68 NOW. Just danced with SANTANA two years ago. ACTUALLY ?...i JUST ....LEVITATE.... :-)
This is WOODSTOCK in upstate NY..the greatest three day concert ever!!! Half a million people and not one bit of BS..no fights, no guns, nothing but SEX DRUGS AND GREAT EFFING MUSIC!!!!
51 years today, people went to Yasgur's Farm and jammed! Most of the people in the crowd and stage are now in their 70s and 80s! That's just crazy to think. What jam this song is! Take care and stay safe 😷
CARLOS SANTANA one of the legends of the 1969 Woodstock Festival . Hendrix was there . Janis Joplin was there . Jerry Garcia was there . The Who . Insane jam sessions , peace and love .
i love the way you feel the music, the way you talk to the screen, its real man, great stuff, you get it, alot dont.
The story is that they weren’t supposed to play until later at night, but because of scheduling they were asked to play early in the day. They had been doing a lot of stuff and were high as kites, thinking they had time. So they were all stoned during this performance. For them to be able to nail this tuned while stoned is awesome👍 Typical back in the 60’s and 70’s 😁
Jerry Garcia of the dead dosed him before this performance
I love watching people appreciate drums. It makes me enjoy it more to hear
His group (Carlos Santana) was formed a month before this in San Francisco-your reaction was off the chain man
Woodstock, New York 3 days of Rock and Roll
A truly legendary performance. An example of diverse musicians playing so tight. Thanx Twon.
this was Woodstock . 4 to 500,000 people gathered in the area of Bethel NY. everyone got along . there was peace and an anti war theme too. all remember 'the Garden '
Woodstock
In New York 1969
500,000 fans !!!!!
Loved watching your reaction ,. it was one of the great rock n roll moments.
Try watching Richie Havens song "Freedom" from the same concert :)
Everyone was HIGH !!! for real.
Nobody sounds like Carlos Santana. Listening to his guitar saved my sanity back in the seventies when I took an eight way hit of organic mescaline.
The guy on organ, Greg Rollie later left Santana to play for Journey. In 2 years Santana hired Neal Schon to play guitar. He later left Santana to play lead guitar for Journey, the white dude with the fro.
Woodstock located in northern New York. It was a concert of all concerts that lasted 3 days if I'm not mistaken.
I love your reaction!
Of course upstate New York....and I was the only one that never got there - everyone else made it (BS) or SAID they did. The thruway was jammed and all my friends thought it was "just another concert"...little did we know what it turned out to be! Way before your time brotha but you can still enjoy it even now. Happy Easter and God bless...
One million people....100,000 expected!!! Lol💜🎼🎶🎵🤟 Santana the group...Carlos Santana guitar God!!!! Woodstock was in upstate New York...1969....privately owned farm. You should see before and after pictures...😳😳😳😳
Carlos Santana was the guitar player, and the group was known as Santana, so yes.
Imagine being 17, skipping school, dropping acid, and playing drums for Santana in front of several hundreds of thousands of people.
More Santana please
Loved your reaction ♥️
Their first 2 albums are absolutely amazing!
This is Woodstock 1969 in America!!!!
Carlos Santana is the one in the black vest on the lead guitar..he called the band Santana.
Man, this is why I like watching reaction vids.
Brother I got down like you did in Chicago 1973 one of my first live concerts good expierince.
Ok, the story goes....Santana was basically an unknown group when Woodstock was formed. They needed another act to take up some space and someone suggested them. They accepted of course. They were scheduled to perform that night at 7:00 pm , so while the band was waiting around in they’re trailer to perform that evening, ( the time was somewhere around lunch or a little after). Somebody started passing some acid around the room and well ok, that helped their selfs. Shortly thereafter, somebody from the concert staff knocked on they’re door and told them to get ready they were going on at 2:00 instead. When they said they weren’t supposed to go on till that night, the guy told them to either get up on stage or go home. What could they do right? High as kites they walked on stage as basically nobodies and walked off as one of the most talked about groups there. And the rest they say is HISTORY....
Best performance at Woodstock!!
They at the Woodstock music festival in upstate NY 1969
The guy with guitar and goatee
Carlos Santana was extremely high when they performed. He said that was the highest he’s ever been while performing🤣
They are in Woodstock which is part of Sherwood Forest.

That drum solo was originally 2 minutes long, but they cut it for the movie

Carlos Santana is the guy on guitar and they are playing at Woodstock in Woodstock N.Y.
Technically Woodstock occurred in Bethel, NY. The site now is host to the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts (BWCA). It's my understanding Woodstock, NY was the original site for the event, but due to larger than expected ticket sales they moved the event to a beautiful farm field with rolling hills and a pond in Bethel. They've now preserved the original site where the stage and main viewing area was, and they built a new grandstand on the other side of the hill. One time at BWCA I got to see The Zombies ("She's Not There") and another time Dave Brubeck ("Take Five"). It's still a magical place, man.
Carlos Santana (guitar), leader of the band named Santana, with a slew of super talented artists, playing at Woodstock - THE music festival of all time, upstate NY, 1969.
Yup. That's. How. It. Was. In. 1969. Woodstock
Awsome
They were a last minute addition to the festival. And they turned up early in the afternoon and were told they'd be on after midnight, so they took some mescaline and/or LSD to kill the time, and just as they were tripping absolute balls people turned up to tell them there'd been a schedule reshuffle and they had to go on now. Santana says for parts of the set he was playing guitar but thought he was fighting off a big snake. The band were between 20 and 23 years old..
Great
This is the famous concert of Woodstock, It was held on a farm in upstate New York in August of 1969, Carlos Santana is the guitar player and leader of the band that bears his name. Unfortunately the entire drum solo has been cut from this video. The drummer is on record to have been the youngest musician at Woodstock
