This is an edited version. Michael Shrieve puts on an epic drum solo. It’s worth looking for the uncut version and listening to. And the dude was only 19yrs old!
I was there. Had never heard of them. We were down fairly close to the stage. We asked who they were. A guy beside us said "They're from San Francisco. They'll blow your head". Well, they did. One of the best acts there. Sticking with Woodstock in '69 try I'm Going Home by Ten Years After.
This was Santana's first performance that exposed their music widely beyond the San Francisco/California scene. They were not "famous" at all before they played at Woodstock...and how thankful we should be that this exposure led to more than 50 years of people enjoying Santana's music!
Carlos Santana, lead guitarist, Greg Rollie,.organ, (founding member of Journey), Michael Shrieve, drummer, anywhere from 17 to 19 years old during this. BTW, this is the short version, the drum solo is epic in the true version
I was there. Woodstock was just a two-hour drive from where I lived in NY. Carlos admitted that he was tripping while playing, just like most of us in the audience
SANTANA is the Band, but it’s also the Name of the Guitarist Carlos Santana. Carlos said he had landed there by Helicopter in the morning and was told that the band wouldn’t be going on til later that afternoon. So they dropped some Mescaline or Acid and about a half hour later it was starting to come on. Just than a Stage hand came up to him and said “hey, get ready to go on next after this band”. He told God, “Please lord, just let me stay in tune and not lose the beat”. He said “you can see I was fighting the guitar, it was like a big Serpent and I was trying to keep it down”. He played in front of 500,000 (1/2 Million) people and Stole the Show! …. SanJoséBob
Just know you were the one who started this whole reaction channel universe. I remember you on the floor, unmade bed, with shaky headphones. True pioneer.
🇨🇦 Carlos Santana was that lead guitarist and his band is called Santana ! The concert was over 3 days, and more than a Million people were there in those 3 days ! Trust me when I say, there were a lot of people dancing to that, and the band was as high as a kite when they did their set on stage ! Another they did was 'Evil Woman' !
I was there!!! I had just turned 19 same age as that drummer. We were all high!! It was Woodstock! Loved your reaction. How could anyone not have a reaction to that? There was so much talent on that stage!! Watch Jame Brown with Andrea Pavarotti sing it's a mans world. It's incredible!!!
I was 14 at the time. Carlos was high on mesc or something and was hallucinating that his guitar neck had turned into a serpent that he had to wrestle. The kid on the drum kit had to be excused from his HS classes to play here. Carlos Santana is the lead guitarist, and the group is called Santana.
I was a thirteen year old kid when Woodstock happened. While I didn't go it defined a generation in many ways. Once in a life time event that could never happen again.
The good thing about this performance is that it was recorded and is available to be seen by even those who were not even born at the time. I honestly like this version over their studio version. It's got so much more life.
Whole band was tripping balls, they were told to hit the stage hours earlier than they were slotted for, naturally they kind of freaked out, not sure if they could pull it off but once they hit that live groove it was pure cosmic fire!
Carlos later described the experience as “ Peaking on psychedelics knowing he wasn’t going to play four hours”, then suddenly being told , “You gotta go on NOW or not at all”. Where you see him holding the guitar neck vertically and swaying from side to side, he said, “ It felt like trying to control a giant snake”. And he remembers thinking, “Please God, let me get through this and play in tune, and I will NEVER do this again!”…
This performance made them famous, they were only known in the San Fransisco area before Woodstock. Carlos Santana is lead guitar player & brought this vibe to the world, Marvellous Marcus Malone on bongas ( RIP he passed a couple of years age), Greg Rollie on keyboards (later played with Journey), the 19 yr old drummer Michael Shrieve had only been with Santana & this was his first big gig & this edited/cut version CUT 😡most of his amazing drum 🥁 solo - which is a huge part of Original video. If people want to see greatness then watch original unedited videos… Michael Shreive was outstanding.
This was THE BEST PERFORMANCE, THEIR FIRST PERFORMANCE ON STAGE!! Carlos was only 19 yrs old, Michael (drummer) was 20 yrs old. My older brother wanted to go but couldn't make. Anybody that has ever heard this became a Santana fan, hands down!!
I lived in Utica at the time which wasn't far from Bethel.. my sister and her boyfriend got tickets and went. They came home and slept for a week. They were totally spent after the concert.
I'm a child of the sixties. I'm currently 71. Unfortunately, I was not at Woodstock. But if I had a time machine, I would go back there just to listen to this one performance. It has to be one of the best, if not the best, musical performances of all time. I got my first car in 1968 and bought a stereo cassette player with two speakers for it. My first tape, which my parents gave me for Christmas, was Santana's first album which contained the studio version of Soul Sacrifice. I wore it out. I later bought it on vinyl, and I now have the CD. Many memories appear whenever I listen to this. Some are bittersweet, but this album has become an important part of my life. Yes, my friend, most of the band was indeed high during this, so I've read. Carlos was tripping on acid as were some of the others, including Michael Shreve. It was a glorious time for all of us.
That whole movie was so good. If I had to pick which performance was my favorite, it would have to be Sly and the Family Stone. You have to watch the whole movie one day though.
Santana was relatively unknown before their set. By the end of their set they were legends. Their manager had to try hard to get them at woodstock because relatively few people were familiar with the band. After this, their 1st album became a whopping hit pretty quickly.
That's why you should be reacting to the Woodstock film version!..The one that's 9:39 long..It show's great clips of the crowd really into it (though most were stoned out of their minds!)..So much better than this version!..The Drum solo is much longer, and incredible!..Don't know why no one reacts to it..I don't think there's a copyright issue, but I could be wrong..Also, believe it or not, there is even a better live version of this song, filmed at Tanglewood, 1970. A year after this was taken..Historically, you can't beat this, but musically, that one will blow you away!..Phenomenal!
This happened by accident. You ask how many were high? ALL of them. In fact, they weren't slated to play until late that night. They figured they had a few hours to kill. But as it turned out, there was only a single two-lane road that led to the location, and since everybody and their brother was trying to be there, the traffic was backed up for many miles. That included a lot of bands that were scheduled to play. So the members of Santana were backstage, tripping *_balls_* (as you watch this, you're seeing enough LSD to kill a small elephant) when the organizers suddenly said "Santana! You're UP!" Santana Band Members: "Uh... my fingers are snakes!" 😵💫 And what we got is what you see. Personally, I think it worked out for the best.
Carlos was tripping, he tells a great story how Jerry gave him something when Carlos’ helicopter landed, and Carlos expected to have like over 12 hrs before he was suppose to play,…anyway, Jerry gives him some magical stuff, and in an hr or two someone says to Carlos “you’re up” (to play),…😯😂 Carlos did great given his situation 👍🏼👏🏼
They were tripping on acid too. They weren't expecting to play but another band didn't show up and they were told they were up next to play and they were terrified they might screw up being high but they gave it their best shot and they ended up being the best band. Can you imagine playing for 1/2 million people doing acid?
I seen an interview and with Carlos Santana..he said he was on LSD....at Woodstock. He said he felt like his guitar was going to wrap around him like a snake ....
They had all taken acid just hours before being unexpectedly called on to perform. This was not their plan. The only one not high was Jose Areas, the bongo player in the red shirt.
Yeah, like many were mentioning, I just recently heard Santana kinda got tricked into going out performing high as balls on acid. 😂 Here, I'll let him tell ya himself: ua-cam.com/video/eylXneeUlJ4/v-deo.html Kinda makes you appreciate the crispiness so much more!
500,000 + and they "wiz trippin" during the whole performance - I don't know how they did it - I played drums for years and I couldn't come close sober...
I saw them 3 weeks later at the Texas International Music festival. And then again 3 more times. Yes, they had dropped acid before and then found out the were on. They were peaking on their LSD during this set. And Steven, the drummer, was 19 at the time.
This is an edited version. Michael Shrieve puts on an epic drum solo. It’s worth looking for the uncut version and listening to. And the dude was only 19yrs old!
I think he was even younger than that...but I'm not positive...either way ...that was something else ! Peace and love :)
His persona added some much to the band, I like watching him & Santana.
He actually had just turned 20 a couple of weeks earlier.
Carlos Santana is the guitatist, everthing so crisp because they were all on acid...Santana said his guitar was a snake 😂😬🔥
Yep, he said he was trying to keep the neck of his guitar straight, he was tripping so hard it kept moving around like a snake.
He couldn't even look at the guitar had to look away
Stoned could go either way😮
Yessir.trye..
Thanx to Jerry Garcia..
This was Santana's first performance that exposed their music widely beyond the San Francisco/California scene. They were not "famous" at all before they played at Woodstock...and how thankful we should be that this exposure led to more than 50 years of people enjoying Santana's music!
Yes and their first album had not been released yet. Imagine hearing all of these Santana songs for the first time ever.
@@davidburkett4005 The crowd was not ready for this at all!! No flower power in that performance.
Santana is the name of the group and named after guitarist Carlos Santana. Love Santana. Legend 🤘🎸👏
The best Latin rock music that ever played in this planet
Carlos Santana, lead guitarist, Greg Rollie,.organ, (founding member of Journey), Michael Shrieve, drummer, anywhere from 17 to 19 years old during this. BTW, this is the short version, the drum solo is epic in the true version
They were virtually unknown, until this concert made them legendary!
I was 14 in 1969. Santana the band and the man Carlos are on my forever favorites list.
I was there. Woodstock was just a two-hour drive from where I lived in NY.
Carlos admitted that he was tripping while playing, just like most of us in the audience
It wasn't in Woodstock,NY. It was in Bethel, NY. They were not allowed to play in Woodstock. But, those that went knew they were in Bethel.
NOBODY outside of San Francisco knew who Santana even was before this performance . This put them on the map

@@chrishoff5291 hey man we don't gotta bring up the past like that man, just the good memories ;)
Santana is both. It's the band, and Carlos Santana is that guitarist that's killin' it.
This was the best lineup Santana ever had.
🇨🇦 Carlos Santana was that lead guitarist and his band is called Santana !

I am subscribed to many reviewers and for some reason Santana is grossly overlooked by everybody!

The lead guitar player is CARLOS SANTANA. This event made them famous. Those drums are called conga drums.
Santana is the Lead Guitar player and it's his band.

Santana at Woodstock was just starting out.
Best live drum solo ever. Carlos Santana is the lead guitarist. The drummer played drums all his life.

Carlos has told the story of taking acid that day. Don't know about rest of the band. What we do know is they kicked ass.
They were all tripping, someone offered the band acid and they all took it, that guy on the maracas looks like he took a couple hits. Lol
500,000 + and they "wiz trippin" during the whole performance - I don't know how they did it - I played drums for years and I couldn't come close sober...

Oh Yea, they were totlally high.
Santana was high on ACID that day. True!

And they were all tripping their brains out on mescaline.
They dropped acid before they played. They weren't supposed to go on that fast.
volume. Up please
.... And the drummer bunked school to play with Santana at the festival.....
If you like big band latino, calypso type then you should check out some 'Kid Creole and the Coconuts' a more jazzy mardi gras vibe. lots of brass.
I saw this in 1970. What happened to the drum solo? WTF?
Heavily redacted.
Yep, I think you F-Upped, LOL Santana is the name of the group, but Carlos Santana is the main player.
