Royal Enfield Classic 350. Is it too heavy and gutless? A viewer on the channel seems to thinks so?

  • Hello.
I address a random comment on the channel that simply said. Too Heavy, Gutless, No thanks.
It would seem that I have made a terrible mistake, or have I?
I also take advantage of a subscribers knowledge and pat myself on the back for getting the speed limit changed in Wales!

Bikes are so much more than the specs sheet, when I was younger it was all about top speed and 0-60 times, now I like to see the scenery :)

A couple of years ago (aged 58) I had what I call my epiphany. I was blasting through a series of bends, (probably too fast) and all of a sudden I was overwhelmed by the thought 🤔 am I enjoying this? Self honesty was needed. I wasn't. It was a real turning point. I was getting older, my sense of vulnerability was telling me it was time. I could have easily packed in altogether. The alternative was to begin the climb back down the size and performance ladder. It was a major adjustment. But I think I've enjoyed it far more than the climb up those rungs. The Classic 350 is exactly right for me at exactly the right time.

You know, sense of vulnerability is a great way of putting it.
I agree, things happen, maybe only little things that make you realize things aren't quite the same as they once were.
Does it take a mature head to accept and understand what's happening? Does everyone eventually get it. I'm not sure.
I guess they must, there is no escape from the march of time.

I was on a ride the other day with my buddy on his 1000 cc Honda sports bike. We stooped at a pub where he said he was enjoying hearing me shift through 4 and sometimes 5 gears to his 1 . I replied, "I enjoy using most of my horsepower most of the time ! " How often is a person going to use 300+ horsepower without killing themselves, someone else, or ending up in jail ? I guess one of the main reasons motorcycling is so fun is the huge variation in motorcycles. One to suit every personality and/or skill level. People just need to rationally select a model based on who they are, rather than who they think they are. (Although if everyone did there would be fewer low mileage slightly used bikes available 😉)

Yes, they’re ‘sturdy’ bikes and yes they’re low powered. Did a ninety mile run around the highlands today, only had to wave past one car and I’m still running in! My little Meteor takes me anywhere I want to go, and takes me there with a smile on my face. Job done.

My uncle had a 1952 BMW R25 12.5bhp...sweet spot for driving was around 45-50 mph. I learnt to drive and thoroughly enjoyed every moment driving it till my midd twenties. All my mates had Suzuki gsxr 750 or Kawasaki zxr...no girl wanted to seat with me but I wasn't bothered. Guess who had the most people around motorbike when we parked wherever, whenever. Loved that kind of bike in my youth and love it right now. As a matter of fact classic 350 is a beast compared to R25.
    Love your video, great job!

As a 70 year old mostly British bike rider I have been considering buying a 350 Classic as a modern (electric start, light clutch, good suspension) daily rum about for quite some time, last week a friend came round with a 350 Meteor he had just bought and I had a sit on it and couldn't believe how heavy and "fat" it felt, just to confirm this I went along to the local RE dealers where they had a 350 Classic and had a while sitting on that and moving it about. Yes it did indeed feel that way, I then spent some time looking into this. My current daily ride is a Norton 750 Atlas, this is 10 kg lighter than the Enfield and feels much smaller in comparison, even my Vincent 1000 although 30kg heaver still "feels" smaller and lighter. I haven't entirely given up on the idea and will be seeing about a test ride ( the local dealer only had a Bullet demonstrator)

Hi Chris, thanks for commenting and for sharing your thoughts.
I have no real knowledge of British bikes but I do understand that, particularly as we get older it probably makes sense to get something a bit more manageable. Me too.
I suppose it depends on your starting point. Mine was A Pan European, an Electra glide and BMW Gs 1200.
The Classic is like a moped compared to them but it is interesting to hear that it may not be the answer for everyone.
      Thanks for commenting.

When you've got a bike there's kind of two modes to riding/owning, you either have performance far superior to cars and completely dominate them or go the other way and don't even try and compete. Both can be equally valid and enjoyable for an afternoon out 😊

I loved mine and my main take away was that it removed that heavy sense of being one moment away of crashing because going to fast. Genuinely a fun bike. Also best looking bike made currently. That said it could do with a few more ponies. If it had say 30bhp it would cope with motorways better ie you don’t have to pin it to get to 65-70 mph.

I am a Classic 350 owner and I don't understand on where the comment 'it's too heavy' comes from. It's a pretty light and manageable bike despite having almost all-metal construction, way more so than when I had my Triumph Bonneville... and yeah I would said it is a bit guttless when your on a main road and your competing with other traffic, but going around towns and the back roads it's excellent.

I don't even notice it's weight, I'm 69 and 5' 6", what the hell is up with these people , one of the main things I like about it is it's so easy to manoeuvre!
It's lighter than my Vstrom 650 at 220 kgs, and heavier than my Old SV650 at 170kgs ,
As for it's power I don't feel it's lacking in anyway it's perfect and suits the bike , and when I wind it up I can have a right hoot around the lanes, and I can annoy some of these horsepower jockeys on tight lanes,..you know the one's, all the horsepower and no experience or competence eh?
    Cheers Mel 🍻

Have you noticed that the sphere of operation changes when you get a smaller bike too? There's a little circuit I do locally. It's a mixture of narrow single track lanes and wider roads with a better surfaces. The latter are B roads, but let's call the former "C" roads 😊. The circuit allows for great fun. Trundling along at about 20mph listening to the birds and taking in all that nature has to offer and also twisty fun up to 60. The bigger bikes I've had wouldn't have been able to stretch their legs on such a circuit so I'd have had to go much further afield to find satisfaction. Cyclists and walkers seem happy to share their environment with me and I get many a friendly wave and nod of appreciation on the Classic 350

Let's be honest, all the royal enfield 350's are to heavy and under powered, if anyone bothered to read road test from the 1950s you will see the royal enfield bullet 350's are lighter and have roughly the same power as the modern bikes,so in reality there's been no progress, I know we have modern euro emissions to comply with, but come on it should be better than this, and before anyone jumps down my throat I'm a hunter 350 owner and love it, but I can see it's short comings

After quite some bikes since 1973, I think this is the machine I have the most fun of all. Beautiful, easy handling, reliable - there are enough fast and furious plastic bags around for those who do not understand a different philosophy of motorcycling. I bought mine on the spot, one and a half year ago, it was love at first sight. 110 is sufficient, and the only tuning I did is also the DNA Filter. Greetings from Luxembourg, ride safe.

I know what the specs are, but I still find it to be a pretty nimble bike, and it doesn't feel that heavy to me. It can bimble along the back lanes, but mine seems to like being revved, then it does legal speeds quite happily. Overtakes need planning but are all the more satisfying. DNA filter is ready to be fitted this weekend, and I'm waiting on a decat pipe from India, which I know won't be stainless, but for £24 and a spray of ACF50, will do the job. Should all be ready for the Distinguished Gentleman's Ride on 19 May. I'm loving my bike 😀

" To each their own" These little bikes deliver far more than what the spec sheet implies. The classic design is beautiful to look at and a pleasure to ride! They aren't heavy by any stretch when sitting by my Goldwing or VTX 1800. The weight added by the real metal is worth the trade off for all the plastic it would take to lighten it. Riding this little bike takes all of the EGO out of riding, just enjoy the scenery.

It's a completely different experience riding the Classic 350 and I really like it for that. I also ride a Continental GT650 (also not particularly powerful) but don't miss the power on that and don't miss it on the 350. Although the 350 isn't light, it does feel pretty light and flickable riding it.

Race horse pulling a plough is an excellent analogy.

2 years ago I bought a Classic 350 without a test ride, had watched as many UA-cam reviews that were out at the time. All I will say the reviews were understating what this bike could deliver, by far the best bike I have owned in 54 years of riding. The first bike ever that has ticked all the boxes for me right now.
I will also say have kept the bike standard apart from touring seats, heated grips and bar end mirrors, then last week decided to replace the one weakness the rubbish spokes. Hitchcocks sent me a pair of alloy wheels 2 days after I paid for them, Bridgestone tubeless tyres fitted, so with a pair of right angled valves I now for me have the perfect set up Classic for me 😊

Some bikers assume that everyone buys a bike to race and speed. The idea that someone just wants to ride around at the speed limit and see the sights is incomprehensible to them. My 350 gets me up to the speed limit as fast as I want, it’s inherently safer as I can’t do anything crazy if i wanted to. It costs 75 dollars per year to insure.

Not someone that thinks I need a big bike, I ride a 230cc bike now, an it gets me through the mountains. But this bike has problems in the US. Most of the highways have a speed limit of at least 70, traffic doing 75 average. But with the error on the speedometer, your bumping in to the speed limiter. The flat states the speed limit is higher. Its competing directly with the 300 rebel. The rebel can do 85, an cruse at 75 without issue. This makes the rebel a bike you can ride anywhere an commute to work on, an the classic 350 an around town only bike. The price is almost identical. I have seen quite a few people in the US buy the classic an sell it right away when they found out it cant keep up with traffic. This is a US issue but they are trying to sell it in the US market.

    • @shottostravels
      @shottostravels  2 місяці тому +1

      Hi Thanks for commenting.
That's interesting. As you say it might be a US issue.
We don't have that here, the national speed limit is 70mph.
That's the quickest you " should" be going anywhere.
But if you were on one of our Motorways a steady 60 to 65 is acceptable. So again it's horses for courses!

In addition to everything else good about this motorcycle, Indian market motorcycles have to last a long time in very challenging physical and use environments. The heaviness of the bikes is related to a sort of primitive and very useful, perfect, durability and fixability. They are great now and they will be at least very good a very long time from now. I mean, assuming a repairs culture emerges. Pretty sure it will. Here in the USA they better get more dealers soon. That is a problem. But not with the bikes, rather with the company strategy. Many people I know have passed RE by because there is no dealer for 100 + miles of their house.

    • @shottostravels
      @shottostravels  2 місяці тому

We are lucky I guess in that the UK is about as big as one state on the US. I'm not sure how many dealers we have but I can think of 5 different ones within 20 miles.
Having said that I don't intend to go near any of them!
It would have to be a real emergency.
But I can see how some would be put off by this

Hi Keith, well my leathers (separate jacket and trousers) 'shrunk' in my wardrobe when the covid lockdown was on, strange thing was so did other clothes as well. As I've said before the EU was the instigator of the 20mph/30kmph in villages and towns and all Wales did was copy that, but someone should be held accountable for wasting government/the peoples money! As for the heavy bike bit at the start of your video perhaps a quick look at the old UK bikes of yesteryear. 350cc singles from the 1930's up to the late 50's were normally reduced engine size in 500cc bikes, with all the weight but less power unless it was 'The Sporting 350' Then BSA and AJS/Matchless brought out bikes with a 350 engine and the characteristics of a 250 weight and frame etc which was a vast improvement. This was of course short lived because of the Japanese takeover of bike manufacturing and the whole traditional system changed. But if anyone buys a modern 350cc Classic then they must understand its shortcomings with power and top speed - personally I would have preferred if it wasn't restricted to 72mph but perhaps the engine wouldn't stand being used flat out for any length of time, hence being restricted.

Most of us are lucky to have more than one bike., probably a faster one with less character but more push. Now that I'm aware of the weight to speed factor, I'm stopping at 1 less ice cream parlor per week. Most of us could well afford to lose a few pounds. LOL. The main reason I ride with gloves over my sleeves are to prevent bees from going up the sleeves. A nasty stinging situation. 👍👍5🏍🙋‍♂️

On one channel there was a comment that Royal Enfield 350 bikes are not that big a seller in the UK, in spite of massive global sales. The guy referred to a "how many on the road" website, in the claim. Assuming that is correct, with the usual caveats about UK motorcycle sales as a whole, and what "big" represents, it's clear that the Classic model disproportionately pleases those people who own one. From personal experience I can confirm many other motorcyclists barely know what a "new" Royal Enfield is, assuming they are all Indian made 500 singles with pre-unit gear boxes. Internet algorithms promote echo chambers, and whether it's politics, music or motorbikes, it's easy to assume everyone is on the same page.

I am surprised to hear that you think many motorcyclists haven't heard of Royal Enfields.

@@shottostravels Even if they have heard the name, I don't think your average sports bike or dirt bike owner have RE on their radar. On two occasions recently I've pulled into bike parking areas, and had riders check the plates and express surprise it's new (all on big tourers). Apart from my Classic I have only ever seen two Meteors on the road, one Hunter, no other Classics and perhaps one or two Interceptors. On the other hand I've seen numerous Himalayans and quite a few old Bullets. Not exactly a statistical survey, but maybe UA-cam isn't representative of sales across the board?

Just sold a 1200 bobber and bought a triumph 400 scrambler... the reasons were a dodgy back, nigh on 250kg and little suspension... the scrambler weighs in at nearly 70 kg less and only has 40 bhp (ish) and plush suspension... I don't miss the power and certainly not the weight. I considered an Enfield but the bike weighs only a bit less than the bobber... for 200kg plus I think 20bhp is a bit on the low side, my wife's 1977 CB125 S weighed a lot less and was as fast as the Enfield (didn't look as cool though) so it should be possible to make em nippier... its all the euro 5 crud strangling them, (that said the pre euro Bullets weren't much faster if at all...) shame really, if the Enfield weighed less the power output wouldn't matter as much, Hence the scrambler as my ride of choice and at age with an iffy back weight matters... the 40 bhp figure is a nice incidental... ride safe

    Just adding my twopence worth!
Personally, it is in my mind overweight and underpowered for it it is.
Thats not to say that it is a poor motorcycle. Its not.
Now, modern bikes are very different objects to those of the past, but one of the key factors is of course that the engine is restricted by the factory to meet emissions and short of ripping out the ecu nothing will change that.
20 bhp should and has been more than adequate on many bikes. But having its performance hindered is its real problem.
I did some googling and looked up the figures for a bike I remember from the early 70s. The Ducati 350 single.
24bhp at 8500 rpm delivered a top speed over 90 mph....but then the bike was only 128 k.....280 odd pounds.
Just makes me think that if you could put that J series engine in a lighter chassis and took the leg irons off. How would it actually perform?

I'm not really defending what you see as overweight and underpowered.
You know, the spec sheet speaks for itself but have you considered that a lot of people buy one because of the way it performs not inspite of it.
There are lots of happy owners out there, bumbling along., enjoying every second.

Morning Keith, another cracking vlog, I have to say I disagree with Peter on the glove under your sleeve issue, I have always worn the glove over the sleeve of my jacket, if you have the sleeve on top not only does the wind blow up it ( no matter how tight) the rain will also be driven up it while you are riding, the only time water will run down your sleeve is when you are stationary and I spend far More time moving than not, this new trend has more to do with fashion than practicality. As for the overweight/ under powered was that the bike or ,,,, 😂😂, all the best buddy 👍

Isn't it strange, I found that the DNA filter did very little, a marginal improvement but the decat pipe which I was lucky enough to have gifted to me when combined with the DNA I thought made a noticable difference with an acceptable noise.
