Calimoto App, Initial thoughts. Beware when loading bikes and protective clothing considerations.
Hello,
Do you prefer to ride alone or with a group,?
Do you constantly cover the same basic route on a ride out and find it sometimes difficult to come up with new ideas for a ride out.
If so the Calimoto app may be for you.
After a recommendation from a channel viewer I give a sort of first impressions review of the Calimoto app.
I also suggest another you tube video that should make us all think twice about strapping stuff onto our bikes and the protective riding gear that we wear when riding them
Please comment, like and Subscribing does help the channel .
If you would like me to share any information or you would like to send me a picture of your bike or adventure please send (preferably somewhere scenic and in Landscape) to-

Hello, more rumblings about the Triumph. I take delivery of a new comfort seat that isn't exactly as described. The Triumph genuine centre stand is now on the bike and I have a general chat about a few other changes that I have made in advance of my little Camping trip. I know I'm too old, and not bendy anymore but I've got to see it through now, I've come too far to not go through with it. You...

Viewers have suggested that they are disappointed that they have to start fitting parts or upgrading parts that are fitted as standard after they have just purchased their new motorcycles. Is there a reason or is it just blatant profiteering? Biggest distance in a day? In 1978 I rode from the Eiffel Tower to Sheffield on a Yamaha RD 200 at the end of a 4 week trip. It's 465 miles today assuming you get all the roads right first time. I didn't have a map (my mate had our only map and we got separated in Lyon) so I probably did quite a few more miles. The ride up the A1 was at night in thick fog and drizzle all the way. I was being followed mile after mile by another biker so when I stopped at some services and so did he I went over to ask what he was doing. He said that he was heading for Doncaster and just wanted the company so we rode the rest of the way together before I turned off for Sheffield. We bikers are a breed apart.

    Hi Keith. I think age & experience develops caution. My days of "sucking rabbits out of hedges", are long since over & old injuries tend to haunt you when you get older ! I ride with protective gear always, as do most of the older guys I see. Modern, well ventilated, armoured & light weight motorcycle gear is fine for me on hot summer days. i will take being a bit warm over gravel rash, or worse, any day ! Keep up the good work & ride safe.

    Hi, great video. I'm a regular user of Calimoto & love it. It's so easy to plot a route on the website & it's immediately available on your phone. As for solo riding, you're a man after my own heart, eight of us toured Scotland in may & it was purgatory, like herding Cats.

      I can imagine Mate. A mate of mine regularly goes on a European adventure. With a group. But they seem to ride on there own in the day but all have the same destination in mind. They all head to the same hotel every night and enjoy a meal and a beer and a catch up on their day. Then follow their own itinerary the next day. It seems to me that's the way to do it, a bit of company a meal, and a chin wag at night and solo Riding in the day. Thanks for commenting Ride safe👍

    I mostly ride alone , or with a friend I trust . Can't abide group mentality and constantly watching out for the next stupid manouver by one of the group and having to obey a route and timetable etc . Re GPS or SatNav as you call them , meh they're OK to find your way in a strange town but they dull the enjoyment of a ride out . Ordnance Survey started mapping the UK back in the 1740s , so maps should be plentiful. When I find my own way , I remember it , when the GPS leads me , I remember nothing . Back when I started riding , the rich lads wore leather and poor b*ggers like me wore a Belstaff jacket , jeans and miner's wellies . My parents weren't interested in buying me any protective gear so I had to work and pay for everything . These days , there is a fantastic choice of riding gear . I am anal about strapping stuff down , a habit from my previous job and always use Rokstraps and a net . I gave up riding with a friend who doesn't wear protective gear and won"t stop using bungee straps . I just don't want to be around when the inevitable happens . I'm older and wiser with a couple of scars to prove it , when my kids started riding , I helped them buy their protective gear , fashionable of course and not old fart style like mine .

    Evening Keith, most interesting vid, raising several points for me. Thanks for mentioning this little channel of mine, and bringing Big Don's predicament across the puddle to notice - there's a few valuable lessons to be learned there. I myself am very much a solitary rider, including and especially on my annual Spanish trip, and purely by choice - means I can go where I please and change my plans when I wish, although I do organise and lead the occasional charity ride-out from The Yew Tree. Now Calimoto and similar technology? I've tried - believe me I've tried, but I'm just a paper-map man, a dinosaur if you like! Great video anyway mate, and very thought provoking. 👍

    hello Keith, great video again. What you were saying about riding gear reminds me of when I learnt to ride in the 60's I bought a pair of drainpipe blue jeans from the market for ten bob (50p in new money) and a second hand leather jacket from a workmate for £1-50p if it was cold I wore a wool bobble hat and a pair of my mothers gloves. When I picked my girlfriend up from work in the summer she would would be wearing a mini skirt and tank top and a pair of sandals with me in my jeans and T shirt. No one worries when they are teenagers. We survived somehow and we're still together 56 years later. We were mad, and now when I see the few kids about that are riding bikes I always hope they are are more sensible than we were. I always ride in protective gear now though!

    • @shottostravels
      @shottostravels 5 днів тому

      Yes Mate, spot on. I had an ex pit Donkey jacket, jeans, gauntlets stolen from work. This was supplemented if it rained by them big thick yellow rubber leggings on the outside of my wellies. Daft thing is, they didn't leak water in. I now have rukka leggings and proper boots and if I get caught out and it rains real heavy, guess what.... Yep, you're ahead of me. Great ride, I might look into Calimoto, not sure if it is available in the States. I prefer riding alone, or in small groups with trusted riders such as my son and brother. Large groups of strangers can be dangerous, too many over here like to drink beer on the stops, not a good mix for bike riding in my opinion. Seems like you always get someone that thinks they have something to prove on their bike. The exception has been the police escorted "Ride for Kids" everyone seemed respectful and safe on those. Thanks for the mention of my recent trip, yes its a shame that Santa and me are so far apart (550 kms) plus she doesn't speak any English and my Spanish is very poor pronunciation (Good Moaning). But we did 'hit it off' well. When I had Kawasaki's back in the 1990's I was a member of their riders club and would go on ride outs with a large group from Southampton, however there is always some idiot who wants to do stupid things and show off to the crowd. So in the end I stopped riding in groups all together and now prefer my own company and set my own speed. Since losing my wife I do tend not to meet up with people and am happiest on my own now anyway.

    Morning Keith, another cracking ride mate, I’m with you on the group rides it’s ok if there’s two or three mate’s out for a ride but anymore than that and it becomes hard work keeping everyone together, takes all the fun out of a ride. I like the idea of Calimoto and I know lots of people think it’s wonderful but I prefer a dedicated sat-nav when I need one rather than using my phone, too many places up here where you still don’t get a signal 😮 and that’s where the best rides are 😂 the bike specific sat-nav’s also have the twisty rides function and it’s surprising to see where they take you even in an area that you think you know well 😂 Only thing I would say is can you mount your phone any lower because it’s covering up those gorgeous twin clocks mate 😊 😂 All the best buddy 👍

    Morning Keith, I am the same. Don’t get me wrong, I will ride with others occasionally, but prefer to ride at my own pace (fast or slow), stop when I want (or not stop at all), just do my own thing. I tried Calimoto a few years ago (2019), couldn’t get on with it, as on a road with lots of bends the arrow was quite distracting, going left right/left/straight etc. Maybe I hadn’t set it up right, maybe through many updates it’s better now. In fact, what you see on your screen, is not what I used to see on mine 🤔😂. As for losing subs when changing bikes, it happens mate. I was surprised not to lose many after I sold my Interceptor 650. Hi Keith thanks for this insight into Callimoto, I have considered it but I would need to upgrade my smartphone to be able to tun it. I did try the original Beeline but found the lack of information to be the deal breaker plus the device went faulty and had to be sent back. I'm surprised you didn't stop at the Old Smithy in Monyash, this is one of my regular routes through Longnor and Crowdecote as shown in the video. I'm not a fan of riding in a large group and tend to avoid such ride outs. My preference is to ride Solo and maybe up to 2 others.

      Hi Mate, I have stopped at Monyash on lots of occasions. I think as it is an area I know very well I wanted to keep going to see where the app was taking me, to take me to New territory. This it did, when I stopped in the lay by, up there it was new to me. So it's introducing me already to new areas which has got to be good. Thanks for commenting Ride safe👍

    Thanks for a wonderful video, it brought back so many memories of when I lived in Keswick back in 1975/6 doing a main drainage/flood alleviation scheme. The Hardknott and Wrynose Passes are just as I remember them with the poor quality tarmac and potholes plus hairpin bends, never took my bike up them as it was down south. Back then I had a Ford Escort estate which I frightened my mother in law almost to death when taking them all over there for a sightseeing trip. Loved seeing the Moot Hall with its 1 hand clock. You were lucky with the weather, normally it's raining there. The price of your camping was cheap, I paid 40 Euros a night on my trip to Madrid last week. As a final note when camping in the UK (even in the summer) I always used a minimum of a 3 season sleeping bag, something that is okay at - 5*C or better. Never been overheated in one in the UK. One night last week I slept on top of the sleeping bag for most of the night. BTW the 'parcel' was posted yesterday - we can chat about it once you receive it.

    • @shottostravels
      @shottostravels 9 днів тому

      Hi Morgan. I'm glad it bought back some memories for you. As for the clock, I had no idea. I didn't notice, I checked the video several times and thought they must of repaired it but on further investigation it would appear that you are absolutely correct. One hand, who knew? Well... You for one! I wouldn't fancy going up those passes in an Escort, sooner go on a bike, at least you can see who's coming the other way. You are not the first to point out the error with the sleeping bag, point taken. I'm not complaining about the site fees, it is a busy site in a tourist destination. Although it has also been pointed out that the lake was Derwentwater not Ullswater. Ah well, it wouldn't be one of my vids unless it was littered with mistakes! Thanks for posting the parcel, as you say, we will mail you when it arrives. Take care👍

    Love the Lake District and Hardknott is a fabulous ride. Hoping to get up there again for a week in August with my Son and his Partner. On the rear suspension what pre-load are your shocks set at? Generally most people think the T120 is too softly sprung rather than too hard so I wonder if your pre-load has been set too high for solo riding. I generally have mine set at one click for solo, 3 clicks for 2-up and then on the max 2-up with luggage.

      Hi, too soft, really. Mine are set on 1 click and I feel every bump, no give at all. Might as well be a hard trail. Those passes expertly negotiated ! Well done. Those airbeds lose heat to the ground, and the air contracts as it cools so lose pressure. I put down a space blanket and yoga mat or newspaper underneath and still need 3 season kit. If you pump the airbed up too much in the morning and leave it in a closed up tent on a sunny day it might burst.

    A bit late to the party I know Keith, but I thought I'd put my four pennorth in. Before I bolted the chair on my T100, I ran mine on Avon Roadriders, which I also ran on my Interceptor, and found them to be really good. Also the progressive front springs in both the T100 and the Interceptor were probably the best improvement I made - well worthwhile. I know what you're saying about these improvements being made at source, but there's a lot of us who thoroughly enjoy doing a bit of farkling! 😂 Quadlock? I bought a couple of cheap 'uns a couple of years ago for the Himalayan and the T100, and they're just fine, and a brilliant way of mounting the phone. So far as rear shocks are concerned, I've got experience with YSS on my Interceptor and they were brilliant Keith. Just going back to Rocstraps v Bungees, have a look at Moto Giant's latest few videos - his sleeping bag slipped out of their bungees, jammed in his back wheel and fetched him off, as a result of which he lost his right foot! No more bungees no never no more!

    Well done buddy, the Hardknott pass is definitely a challenge for anyone, the Bonneville is really well suited to touring, it’s capable of covering the miles easily and comfortably, yet light enough to tackle things like the Hardknott with a lot more confidence than a big heavy tourer or adventure bike. Did have to chuckle about the wildlife 😂 and you should always take at least a 3 season sleeping bag, if you get too hot you can easily unzip it, nothing worse than being cold, well yeah, cold and wet 😂 at least you dropped lucky with the weather 🌞 All the best buddy 👍

    • @shottostravels
      @shottostravels 9 днів тому

      Hi Mike, can't argue with any of that. Yes my sleeping bag was crap and I underestimated how cold it gets. I heard another fella talking and he said it goes cold by the lake. Perhaps that was it. I think when you're going over there it's best not to follow a mate (or anybody) too closely because if he has to stop for something oncoming you may just be at a point where your options are limited due to camber etc. So... You just fall off. Luckily due to the terrain it's all low speed ( or no speed) tumbles. But by the sound of it you've been over there too. So you know that. Ride safe👍

    Hi Keith….you were pitched by Derwentwater, not Ullswater 🫣 I wish I had known you were coming up, you could have popped in for a brew on your way there/home, as we are literally 5 mins from M6 J35. You had us in stitches with the bird impressions. Where we are, the ducks go for it in the early hours, then fly about, landing on the roof of our place (not bricks and mortar), and we are sure they have hob nail boots on, so do sympathise. I have done Wrynose and Hardknott a few times (yep the vids are available to watch), but not on the Classic 350 yet. That’s on my to do list this year. It does catch the unwary out, almost better to do it on a lighter bike, that you can comfortably flat foot when seated. Sadly, something these big adventure bikes don’t allow for. Is the quad lock case for a Pixel 7a, as that’s the phone I have ? I’ll give you something for it. Nice video, if you come up again, give me a shout.
