Royal Enfield 350. Remember No Service, No Warranty Sir? Could this go some way to explaining why?

  • After minor warranty work on my new bike.
A chance conversation could go someway to explaining the reason a dealership may not be jumping up and down with excitement to help you if you have issues down the line.

To be honest, if you can do your own servicing and know a little about bikes you are better off going it alone. The Enfield is a relatively simple beast and as recognized pretty reliable. If anything did go wrong down the line, buying a replacement part yourself and fitting it would still leave you quids in compared to being raped by their service charges just to keep a warranty. Ride safe 👍

      Done all my own servicing.
They wanted 300 quid for a first service on my bike .
Two valves checked, a filter and an oil change. Really?
After 3 services it covers the cost of most repairs if you get a problem.
Speedo seems to be the most common hiccup so it could be a problem
EBay genuine OEM 80quid but kilometres main digits with mph secondary .
Am I bovered if I have to get one?
      Of course not
      10 minute job to fit.
And the one thing I can guarantee is I know the jobs been done and done properly.
Simple little bikes easy to work on .
      Not impressed by bike shops
Fancy bikes command fancy workshop servicing prices.
The Enfields are designed for easy maintenance.

@@Lee-70ish how easy would you say it is to service for a newbie to bikes/ bike engines etc etc?
I miss the days of working on cars (going to breakers yards looking for parts with my Father etc etc) and modern cars are now more laptops than mechanical so looking at bikes like this or similar bikes to just filter through traffic in city centres but also to learn how to fix and maintain the bike myself.

I bought my Interceptor used with less than 1000 miles. Having no local dealer, I decided to do my own oil and filter at about 1400 miles. I didn’t know the previous owner, who sadly had died, thus the availability of the bike. I’ve done most servicing on my bikes for years, so the oil change was easy. My concern was the valve adjustment and the warranty. At about 4000 miles I took it to a boutique dealer 150 miles from my home for a full service. I was shocked that they charged $450 US. I spoke to the technician to get a run down on the condition of the bike and he said the valves didn’t need any adjustment. He said it was the first Enfield he had serviced that needed no adjustment. So essentially I paid $450 for an oil and filter. In my mind, I felt having the service on record protected my warranty and gave me peace of mind. I realize many motorcyclists consider dealers pirates, but without service work and parts sales many couldn’t stay in business. I’ll add that my warranty will expire this summer, so I won’t be having any more $450 oil changes.

    • @shottostravels
      @shottostravels  27 днів тому

Thank you for sharing your thoughts Alvin, all seems reasonable to me.
$450 seems a lot especially as salt was well and truly rubbed in the wound when he admitted they didn't require adjustment.
Sometimes we just don't know what to do for the best.

Ive been doing it on my bikes for 50 years now and the classics a simple machine. If something breaks, ill fix it myself.... that RE warranty rate is a joke. Regarding photos, i really dont mind. Hi Keith, I just did my own service at 300 miles, it was extremely simple. The dealer here in the USA that I purchased from said that would not be an issue for him when I bought it, hopefully I'll never have to test that. I feel better doing my own, I have had bikes returned from dealers with some sketchy service results, I believe I can do as well or better. I do wish you could buy a service manual for them though. I like your current format, it spreads the pictures out and mixes with your topics well. That said, I'll be watching either way. Stay safe friend!

Hi Keith, by law in the UK (and I understand the EU), you are ok to do your own servicing as long as the correct parts are used and the service is well documented. This is the law which stopped this warranty issue a few years ago. Regard the £9, this is an Indian culture to which RE is paying. £9 is worth much more in India than in the UK. The disparity between the £9 and what should have been charged as per the UK economy, is a risk and a known risk by the authorised dealer in the UK (and other EU countries). That said, the risk of being paid such a low amount for warranty work is outweighed by the profits from the sales and service from that AD. Whilst India will fight about the ability for UK owners performing their own service, the law is the law and the country is the UK, not India. Thoughts?

    • @shottostravels
      @shottostravels  Місяць тому +1

      Hi Mate thanks for commenting.
It's a minefield and I am certainly, absolutely not qualified to give a definitive answer.
I did a bit of digging on a previous vlog which suggests that Motorcycles were Not covered in the E Us block exemption laws that covered the allowed self servicing of cars.
Most people, me included thought that they were.
We have obviously left the EU now but have adopted those laws, they are still in force here.
This means that a motorcycle manufacturer can insist that the servicing is done by them to maintain warranty.
So Im afraid your thoughts that they are covered by law, strictly speaking is wrong.
Now this is a minefield and lots of stuff comes into play, but I just thought I'd highlight another, the £9 for 2 hours warranty work which is just another factor that may influenceca dealers decision not to be as " helpful" as they might otherwise be if they were getting a decent rate of say ,£75 an hour.
I am hopeful that it won't be tested. These are cheap easy to work on bikes that shouldn't pose any major difficulties moving forward.
      Thanks again, ride safe👍

I always felt it was the dealership and NOT RE that we're making the decision on what was warranty work or not. I’m eighty miles away from my nearest dealer….a dealer under Motogb, not ‘yet’ in the RE uk network.
I’ve been in touch with RE customer service as I’m past the one and a half months time limit for the first service (the warranty says 300 miles or one and a half months). I asked if my bike warranty was void as the time has passed, they answered me (in writing) that warranty claims are on a ‘case by case basis’…. So an ambiguous answer!
Regarding servicing, they did confirm that I could use any vat registered garage for the service (because of my distance from the dealer) as long as original parts and correct oil are used.
    All food for thought.

It always worth remembering that a manufacturer warranty is in excess of the consumer protection and rights under law, which is generally stronger than a warranty, I believe Stuart Fillingham has said he's never relied on the warranty and in the few occasions he's had issues with the dealer he's fallen back on the consumer regulation and used a small claims process where they were unreasonable on his problems, which he said their attitude changes when legal action is taken especially small dealers 🤷🏻‍♂️

Thanks for making this video. I too have had issues with getting my bike fixed under warranty. Took it to 2 dealerships, one being the dealership i bought it new from, and both charged me diagnostics ($136) and told me there was nothing they could do because it didn't fail for them in the 30 minutes they fiddled with it. I told them how it dies often and even going down road. I changed relays, still dies. Told dealership that I tested voltage at fuel pump and its fine and needed to replace my pump. They wouldn't... So i changed it myself and it now runs perfect. Too bad I had to pay out of pocket for what should have been warranty. Now i know why they didn't take more time and care. Sorry i made a short story long.

I wonder if it's the same issue.
If the manufacturer isn't paying a sensible rate then the dealer isn't going to show much interest when things go wrong.
Especially if he hasn't made anything out of us because we have self serviced our own bikes.
      Strange state of affairs.
Glad you got your bike sorted.

My first service on my new 350 classic is due, but i have decided to do it myself. I have reasoned that should something go wrong, the price of RE parts to replace yourself are always going to be less expensive than the cost of dealership servicing charges. If you are confident in servicing yourself that is. To pay a third of the total bike cost in dealership services compared to the small chance of engine failure is the reason i'm doing it myself. I'm not a mechanic but these are simple machines, and there are UA-cam video's for help.

Morning Keith, I'm on my second Enfield and done all my own servicing, I had my Interceptor three years it had the brake caliper recall done and I had a new speedo sensor replaced under warranty with no problem whatsoever,
I've now got my Classic 350, I bought it last July and have done all the servicing myself on it , I've done 5,500 miles so far and no issues with it, I do feel for the dealerships on the warranty reimbursement from Enfield, they're probably paying them what the going rate is in India?
But I won't pay anything from £180 to the outrageous £300 that I've heard some unscrupulous dealerships are charging for an oil and filter change and tappets check!
180 is just about palatable, but 300 ! No way !

Dealers are applying a first world servicing strategy befitting a Panigale or S1000RR, to a 2-valve single pot bike. It's not as if there's an RE dealer in every town, and what dealers there are, are happy to send a new bike to the other end of the country, then say take it to your nearest Royal Enfield agent for servicing. Something has to give, and currently it's the ambiguous, is-it-or-isn't-it warranty situation of owner mechanics.

That Warranty claim price must be based on what a worker would get in India. But they would not be able to refuse a serious claim if you can prove that you were a competent person and you had use the correct parts. This is under the sale of goods act etc.
Personably I love to see other people's photos as well, probably better to show the photos as they come in.

Most dealers don't make money on selling motorcycles. Its the spare parts and servicing where they make the money. It is a sticking point warranty issues. I always take mine to the dealer for servicing just in case of claims. Another bugbear is service light coming on with most main motorbike manufactures, which can't be turned off without going to the main dealers. Royal Enfield are good, the service light you can turn off yourself.

I have both the Classic 350 and the Meteor 350, cracking bikes, love em. The main issue with the brand is the UK importers, they are abysmal, their customer service is none existent, they don't answer emails, phone calls or messages and the parts supply back up is total rubbish. They are rapidly gaining a reputation as a bunch of amateurs who are just playing at it. If they don't get their act together pretty quickly they are going to loose customers, be that us current RE die hards and future potential customers.
Onto the photos, for me I'd rather see them once a month on a separate vlog, nothing personal (cus I love your channel and your ramblings) but it gets a bit samey after a while however, it's your channel and you choose the content.🤔🙂👍

Thanks mate, I know exactly what you mean. I appreciate your input.
Interesting to hear your views on the importers too, I believe that Royal Enfield have taken this on themselves recently after a bit of a spat with the previous importers who possibly feel a bit aggrieved having built up the brand in the UK and putting them on the map.

I had a dealer do the first service and I did the 3000 mile service since it was just basically an inspection and no way I was gonna pay for that. 6000 miles SERVICE is due now and I think I’m gonna have the dealer do it.

In Canada it's law that doing your own vehicle servicing cannot void a manufacture's warranty. Occasionally you might have to prove so, but if you've blown up your engine because you've never changed the oil a dealer can easily prove your negligence :P

Keith, that's a 15 minute job tops. £9 is enough. Edward.

Hardly covers the business rates for 15 minutes, running a business out of premises and complying with all the legislation is a very expensive business. Until you've paid the bills not many realise how high overheads are.

I'm sure you are correct. Everyone seems to think they are making a fortune but I'm sure it's not that case.

2 hours to change a RE mudguard?!?! 😂 i wouldn’t call him a “mechanic” then.. any competent man with right tools should be able to swap the mudguard under 10 minutes max🎉
