Being a college student studying to become an aquarist and enter this industry, it’s really nice to hear two seasoned professional joke about how “they’re never gonna make a mistake again” and “those are the only mistakes I’ve ever made”
It’s comforting to know that literally everyone has those learning lessons haha

Unplugged a heater, took it out of the tank to service a pump. Set the heater on top of my printer next to the tank. Finished all the maintenance. Plugged heater back in. Melted a hole through printer.

Dumb thing #1. I put a betta in an aquarium that was too large (55) and also contained giant danios. The poor guy was harassed and exhausted to the point that he almost didn't recover. Had to rush out and buy a 10g to put him in to be more comfortable.

I kept a betta in a fully planted 125 gallon with just ramshorn snails and he thrived, it isn't the tank size, it's the tank mates. He was at leisure to explore anywhere he pleased and it was a beautiful thing to see. Drawback was it was an expensive tank to keep at 80 deg.

Dumbest thing I did was tell my husband I only wanted one 5 gallon tank..... maybe he was dumb for believing me.😂

I could write a book with all the dumb things I've done in the 35yrs of fish keeping.
One that will always stick in my head was when I was about thirteen and I had a 29 gal community tank and had a molly holding. I put the molly in a two-gallon fishbowl with some of the substrate, and a cycled box bubbler I had in the 29gal.
I put a heater in the bowl to keep temp and forgot to adjust the heater, The next morning I woke up and the water was like bath water, the worst part was she actually had all the fry and her and all the fry were laying at the bottom of the bowl cooked.

As a Professional Idiot, I have done many dumb things.
A couple that come to mind for fishkeeping.
A a high schooler I had a 10 gallon tank overloaded with fish that should not be together. A Betta and a Blue Gourami along with many other fish. This was long before the internet and it was word of mouth. I think back on that tank and shudder.
More recently I had 16 gallon that I cycled for a Betta. I had heard change water but not filter without listening to the part about how to do this. This did not end well. I gave up the hobby until KG Tropicals got me back in.
I also try too justify this as it is a learning experience and sometimes you do dumb things. If you learn from them it is not so bad.

Aquaclear filter maintenance. Took the motor off to clean and forgot to put it back before filling..
Doing a water change, I forgot to drop down or unplug the heater.
Added Duckweed to one of my tanks. It's the gift that keeps on giving. 👌

Not deciding to do aquasoil before I planted the tank, a total re-do.
Not quarantining new fish, no bad effects
Starting with small tank only to replace with larger then even larger aquarium so spent 3× more than I should have (only have space for 1!)

You should make a tank talk podcast about good alternatives to monster fish 🐟. Something dumb i don is I hade a towel on one of my lights on a open top tank and it fell in with half in the water and half out and acted like a syphon and drained half the water It was in a room with a carpeted floor I walked in in the morning and everything was soaked😅 Love the podcast by the way keep it up❤❤.

Thank you! I dropped a HOB pre-filter into one of my 60 gallon tanks while cleaning and not wanting to get up to my arm pits wet right then decided I would get it later. One of my bristle nose plecos decided it would make a great cave. Needless to say it took forever with tiny scissors to free him from his cave. Lesson learned ... Laziness has no place in this hobby!

Awesome video! Been watching you both for a while now. I really liked last week topic, but couldn’t related to both of your fantasy tanks because they were so large, could you guys do a video for a dream tank at 55,75 and 125 (what I think most above average fish keepers own)? I would love to hear both of you opinions on this podcast! Keep up the great work!

Being new to the tank, perhaps the green rasboras were being chased by the other fish and their inclination was to jump out of the water (not understanding they are in a small glass box).

For the record, John, it would seem you are correct about Algae Fix depleting the oxygen in the aquarium as per Google Search...
"Before using, make certain that the pond has vigorous aeration, i.e., a fountain or aeration device to avoid fish loss due to low oxygen levels. When algae is controlled and removed by the filter or settles to the bottom of the pond, the oxygen level may drop to harmful levels if adequate aeration is not provided."

One that happened to me. We had just moved into our new home, and had several longfin tetras, mix of black skirt and white skirts, as well as a couple corys. We moved them from the bucket they were being transferred in to a tank. We underestimated that the Metairie Louisiana municipal water is a lot hotter than the Mandeville water out the tap, and even after letting it be treated for awhile, it was too hot for the fish. Someone did confirm they should've been able to survive it, but between the stress of being driven over 30 miles, and the sudden temperature shift, there were no survivors....... neither of us, myself nor my gf, have really forgiven ourselves.

Thanks guys. Many many years ago before UA-cam, I had a 75 and purchased Mubunas. Tiny colbats, albinos, red zebras, a blue eyed pleco and this one really cool looking white, black and yellow one. As they grew up I added a blue lobster. He didn't last but a couple of days. They devoured it. But it gets worse... Some months later the cute little multicolored one turned black. Yes, a male auratus. Eventually he killed everything in the tank. I was so pi$$ed I sold the tank and vowed I would never have fish again. Thankfully, I stumbled upon you guys a few years or so ago. 4 tanks now of Mbuna, Tanganika's, and shrimp. NO Aratus!

At 75, I think I out dumbed you both together. Had no internet/computer till 55. What I knew was from brother bringing me to someone selling fish from his house that Blue fished and made his own lead anchors and flies(which was the most positive knowledge I'll never forget, his name was Mr. Johnson), department stores fish, turtles and gators. Going to stores that would sell you anything .... and we had many(one thing that I miss today) no mail order anything if it wasn't from the Sears, Montgomery Ward or J&J Smith jokes and tricks catalogs !

Me and my friend owned a snakehead back in high school(still legal in the 90s) and had it in our Bio teachers 75gal classroom tank. We had a couple of kids in our class that were pretty much jerks. They were determined to see how “tough” the fish was and wanted it to fight. Without our knowledge they bought a tri colored “shark” to put in the tank with him. As soon as that poor shark hit the surface of the water…the snakehead ate it. Over in milliseconds. Huge mistake

I had a 29 tall that I was hanging onto for a rainy day in my parents attic. I finally decided I wanted to start a new tank, so I went up on a 12 foot ladder with my wife spotting me, went into the attic, got the tank, started back down the ladder assuming she was still spotting me. (Spoilers: she wasn't, lol)
And so when I started to lose my balance, I had to start taking some real fast steps and ended up missing the last rung, bringing the tank down onto my knee, shattering one side of it lol.
Lucky just got a few 7small cuts, but the cleanup of the glass suuuucked. (Not to mention I had been hanging onto that tank for like 3 years)

In the late 90’s I had an African cichlid tank, but I didn’t know the difference between Peacocks or Mbuna. The store just said African cichlids. So I ended up with both kinds and the Mbuna went to town on the peacocks. I only recently got back into Africans after watching John’s video on how to do it right.

A dumb thing i've done twice is I put my glass lid on the floor and stepped on it and cracked it, you would think I learned my lesson. Oh no, not me. I proceeded to put one of the lids for my 75 on the floor and guess what? Yes, I cracked that one as well.

I did a few dumb things.
One cost some of my fish their lives.
    This i regret the most:
First time i used an active soil i just added it to an established tank.
Didnt know it would release ammonia.
And i lost half of my fish.
I still get sad and angry at myself for that.
As a kid i collected rainworms and dumped a jar full of worms and soil in my turtle tank.
    My dad just cleaned it.
    Whole tank dirty.
    Whole living room stinking.
    The others all involve water.
    Syphoning water in a bucket
    Getting distracted
    Water on the floor.
Making a mistake putting the pumphead back on a filter
    Water on the floor.
    Leaving the hoses too long
Water poors out of the filter cause too much pressure.
    Water on the floor.

One of the dumbest things I have done was make a diy sponge filter out of a onion powder container. Had no idea that onions have a chemical that is toxic to fish and shrimp... Long story short, all of the color and behavior was fine. Shortly after adding Tetras and a few new shrimp, things started to not look right even though their color was still good. Everything died, after ruling out everything I could rule out the only factor that could be related was the powder union container, did a quick search and found out about onions being toxic. The plastic must have absorbed some of the toxin and then slowly released it into the water. My other tank that had a diy sponge filter made from a water bottle.

@KGTropicals Should have left the 125 next to the dumpster. I have a 20g that came from the dumpster corral at my friend's apartment complex. It was crusty and I was sure it would leak. But it didn't and it cleaned up beautiful.

Left the lid open on my 29g cat knocked in a toilet paper roll i had on a shelf above the tank two of my corys got caught up in the wet toilet paper and died
Assumed a filter that worked for guppy fry sword tail fry and kribensis fry would be ok for cory fry, they all got sucked up and lost 20+ corydoras fry
Had a sponge filter that was too strong for my 10g shrimp tank and i watched it blow shrimp right out of the water
Ive made so many dumb mistakes but none of those mistakes are going to happen again

had a 15gal with guppies... entertained the idea of feeding zucchini, cucumber, and other soft veg. Once you try out a few it is natural to try out what else can be fed... Long story short Watermelon does not work in the fish tank...
The water was foul the next morning... it was like milk with a sweet smell to it...
Watermelon was probably the worst I tried and the last one... back to the cucumber and professional fish food after that...

I’ve made the beginner mistake of trying to find my own tank mates for Victorian cichlids and I spent hundreds of dollars trying to do it, I figured there has to be a way to understand the fish, and the truth of the matter is I was not listening to advice being given. Otherwise Dumbest thing I ever did was consider quitting, today I have 14 tanks with over 500 fish, so my advice is don’t try to reinvent the wheel! Stay happy and healthy my friends! 😊❤
