- We don't wanna think about it but it's true, there's just some fish that shouldn't be in the aquarium hobby because 99% of fish keepers just aren't capable of housing them properly.
In this episode John and Jason discuss the fish that they believe should be the first taken out of the hobby. Not because they're bad fish, but because there's too many bad fish keepers.

I'm not sure how to word this without sounding like "that guy," but the term "Shouldn't Be In The Hobby" grates against the very core of my being. I don't believe banning species is the answer because you're denying the people who can house them properly the opportunity of keeping them. However, the hobby needs to be revamped, and there has to be a vetting process.
Fish that should require a permit
1. Iridescent Shark
2. Pacu
3. Arowana
4. Arapaima
5. Redtail Shark (Asian & South American)
Some honorable mentions
Actually, most catfish should be vetted or permitted or both. There are so many that get to be 4 feet or bigger.
Stingray (pretty much all of them)
The trade gladly sells clown knives and red tail catfish. Channel is a very polymorphic species. C. Orientals, the, 3' spotted one that everyone gets their tits in a wringer about, was smuggled in in its estival 1:12:17 1: 1:12:17 state by Asian immigrants as it is an esteemed food fish. There are many smaller species, sometimes called Parachanna. They have made a plethora of hybrids with them in Asia. Ryo Watanabe has a video of a LFS in Singapore with many of these colorful hybrids
Legal in GB, Europe and Canada. Arapaima are illegal to sell in California as are Piranhas and Payaras

Some very nice Corydoras and Synodontis. My Congo spotted puffers are every bit the wet pet your oscars are and much easier to house.

Honestly part of it too is places should have to display the max size of the fish. They put a 1in fish in a tank and don't tell anyone it grows to 3feet. Fine for expericed keepers. But im sure plenty of buyers never had a clue. I mean parents for 1 probably have no clue what they are getting theyre child.

Another reason they are so bad in Florida, along with other invasive aquarium fish, is people keep a lot of yard ponds that get flooded out and their livestock gets pushed into the canals, which lead to the lakes and retaining ponds, which allows them to travel and colonize everywhere
I was going to say something like this, Florida’s gets hit by tropical storms that destroy property and flood everywhere, releasing plecos and mystery snails into the environment
In Washington there are regulations that state you can’t have potentially invasive species in a pond if you are within a certain distance of a water source.
Does Florida have regulations like this?
@@realhusky the problem in Florida is, the drainage is everywhere, the water table is high and there are canals everywhere, in everyone’s back yard basically. In south Florida they would have to ban all in ground private ponds, but the invasion is already done. It’s virtually impossible to get rid of the invasive aquarium fish in south Florida waterways, cichlids, loaches, gouramis, catfish from every continent, monster fish, they are all over

I've had freshwater tanks for 50+ years. I have enjoyed watching and learning from both of you. My fish are healthier and I believe, happier, thanks to this podcast and your individual channels. Keep giving us more content. Fish are work. Fish keeping isn't cheap. However, fish continues to calm my anxiety faster than anything else. 100% worth my time!
On the podcast, I wish you would say the name of the fish more often then saying them and they and these fish.
I get distracted so I lose what you're talking about for 10 minutes. And it isn't easy to keep up.

I think... THINK... most people buy sturgeon for their ponds. I don't know anyone who keeps one.
When I was a kid my dad got bit pretty bad by his pakus. We didn't have them much longer... I really feel like the common fish stores should focus on nano fish, maybe anything suitable long term in up to 75 gallon tanks.
As much as I'm not the biggest fan of Oscars, why not just keep a few of them instead of piranha? Honestly the average person probably couldn't really even tell the difference and you'll have a much better time with them anyway
BigRich definitely has a sturgeon. Two of them, I think. It's still small, though. Eell, small for him.

Another great episode. This, one went fast! I've been against the common pleco being in the hobby for almost a decade now. I tore down a tank at my work place that had 2 common plecos and 2 parrot fish in a 54g corner tank and the plecos were putting holes in the parrots. I had to threaten calling animal control.. the company had been bought out and the new people just stopped having the tank maintained by the company that was taking care of it. It was horrific when I came back from vacation 😢😢😢 I'm pretty sure the parrots didn't make it when I was able to get a local store to take them.

The fish John was trying to think of is probably the Payara or vampire fish. There are a couple of different species. Back in the day I used to see them all the time labeled as sabertusk or sabertooth barracuda.

Snakeeheads in us wasn't released by aquarium fish keepers but the Asian community wanted to harvest them later for their benefits in healing.
Snakehead fish has very beneficial biomedical benefits, such as anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, anti-nociception pain (nociception), and anti-cancer properties (Rahman et al., 2018) .
I have 6 tanks with Snakeheads, Channa Pulchra, Channa Striata Albino and Channa Marulioides but I have 4 and 6 feet tanks. But the Giant Snakehead like
Channa Micropeltes should not be In aquariums. But the Channa Micropeltes Jambi is on my wish list if I get to build a tank big as a swimming pool like Ohio fish rescue has for the arapaimas. 😊
On today's episode, a list of fish for me to buy when the local public indoor pool comes up for sale.
We also rescued a giant gourami from a country max. He was in maybe a 100 gallon corner display tank. He filled the tank. The original owners couldn't bring him while moving. They transported him in a 5 gallon bucket- he didn't fit. This is the fish I think of when I think of fish that don't belong in this hobby (in general, excluding people who can provide the space and commit to the fish for life). Even transporting them is a challenge, we used one of those black totes with the yellow lids and it made a giant flood in my backseat. We had him for about 2 months in a 300 gallon stock tank, filled to about 250 gallons. We could never make him happy, couldn't figure out what it was he didn't like, but weren't sure where he could go. Someone tipped me off to a local fish store that has a 3000 gallon tank. I had actual tears in my eyes when he went into that tank, I was so relieved that he was finally somewhere that could take care of him and give him what he needs. He was fast friends with the female that was already in the tank. It was an immediate transformation in his behavior as well. I am glad we got him out of that country max, but I am ecstatic that we don't have him anymore. They are not a pet for the average fish keeper.
Those iridescent sharks being skittish and “freaking out for no reason” is the same reason I also don’t like keeping bala sharks. I had 3 of them and they were about 10 inches long. The issue was that they’d just freak out and bang into stuff, bang into the lids, bang into the glass. They were psychos. I had them in my old 135 gallon tank, which was the minimum recommended 6 foot tank size. I wouldn’t say a 6 foot tank is “too small”, I’d just say that’s “okay” and to just throw 5 or 6 of them in there and don’t put that many other fish in with them, and just put a couple large center piece decorations in the tank for them to hide behind because they’ll need that swimming room. 8 foot tank or longer would be a lot better tho. But I still won’t keep them in my 8 foot 240 gallon because those fish are crazy.
Redtail catfish can live for more than 40 years according to world records freshwater fishing and can grow up to 6 feet long and weigh 180 pounds
My husband and I are new to the hobby and almost chose a common pleco and the clerk did let us know how massive it was going to get and we really appreciated it, it feels like torture to keep them inappropriately
I would say any fish that gets larger than about 3 ft mostly bc people won't get tanks wide enough. And the #1 thing to me is fast water and open water fish. Like iridescent sharks needing a Lot of open space to 'run' around and feel safe. Fish like the Goonch catfish bc of the super fast waters but also the water is literally mud colored lol. But at the same time there will be boundaries broken with society. I'll get red tails again which I'd put on this list and they will be in an 16×8 at least and I still am not sure if that's really big enough bc at the end of the day I don't want to live in a closet or even be confined to a house lol. Like ideally it'd be a huge pond and they'd come visit you lol.
29:25 OMG I can't tell you how enraged it makes me that they are selling sturgeon! I want one so so bad before they kill them all but I wont get one until I can make an 80ft deep pond or something as crazy as that. Public aquariums should suffice for everyone with these fish and even then I still feel for them bc those tanks imo are still way too small.
In my country it's quite hard to get the big plecos. They sell the small bristlenose catfish, which actually make excellent aquarium fish. The bigger plecos are represented in the pet store as one or two max and you get a warning that they grow huge as well
Fascinating. I’ve never been into monster fish but learning about them and the people who love them is cool.
Why get piranhas when a redete tetra is basically a mini version that you can actually enjoy for 1/20th the price
I remember the snakehead fish scare! I'm still scared to look at one because I don't want to know what it is. They said it would come out and eat your feet or something and I'm in NJ
6:04 lol idk bc they love to roam the river especially in breeding season. But that's with most fish and the main problem we will never be able to overcome. Largely their natural habitat is way too vast for us to house in our homes but that doesn't mean they will suffer.

I used to have a black piranha that a neighbor gave me when he had to get rid of the aquarium. I would reach in and pet the thing, that’s how vicious it was, lol
29:35 50 for a sturgeon 😂😂😂 in what state my pet store sales two three feet only for 3k and up I still will not get one because I know how big they get.

I have another pleco story. We broke down a tank we bought off craigslist. The owner had become disabled during service to his community, and could no longer care for it. It was a heartbreaking thing to see. The tank water actually looked okay at a glance (needed to be cleaned), but when we drained it the water felt like bathwater. I don't know the actual temperature, but this 10+ inch sailfin pleco was living in water that would have been uncomfortably warm to bathe in. He is now in a 300 gallon stock tank with our turtle. I would never choose to acquirea large pleco, but he came with the tank and as of right now he is staying with us.
I think about this man at least once a month, I wish we could have done more for him but we live 2 hours away. If we lived closer, I honestly would have asked him if instead of getting rid of the tank, we could have just come and maintained it for him (no charge). He deserved better from his community.
Just love your Podcast....it would be awesome if you do an episode strictly about cichlids. My journey in keeping african cichlids was certainly bumpy...the different types that I kept together, the tank set up for the different types, the target feeding, filtration, detritus management, etc. It would be great to have a single podcast that covers that journey

2 things i think the majority of the plecos in the wild likely are from breeders having them in open ponds along the coast that were flooded during hurricanes or tropical storms. The other is my local pet store recommended Pacu and a gar to me for my 75 gal tank. I was so disappointed in him. I bought the small fish I had picked out for a different tank but that is the last time I'll buy from him. So sad.

They can be useful for external parasites that spend some time in the water column. Also good for green water when you want to get rid of it!

I feel that people are just ignorant or have an ego as big as these innocent gaints and then abuse them.
Channa come in all shapes and sizes. They are legal here in the uk, but the majority are the smaller species

I appreciate that you brought up the common pleco. I am here in Florida and see the destruction firsthand of what they do. I was a teacher for grade school for quite some time and I always showed my students the videos of them in Blue Springs covering every inch of the rivers.

I just saw several tanks with them in at PetSmart yesterday. Although it says on the tanks minimum tank size 125. I still think big box stores should NOT sell the common pleco. Maybe ... Maybe .. maybe .. at an actual aquatic store that knows what they are doing & selling, & who they are selling them to & their tank size but ..... ...... A guy working at grocery store said he has one in a 29 g tank & said he was told they would only grow to tank size. I said NO ... Get it out of the 29 g tank & into a bigger tank. I don't know where he got it from. I think a 125 is actually too small. I have a bristlenose pleco in a 45 g tall. He eats & poops a lot. I feed him good.

Great topic guys! I agree with the snakehead; it's an incredible looking fish and I would love one. However there is a North American native fish that is a much better alternative. Check out the Bowfin. They are available online for the aquarium trade
My friends and I had a couple Snakeheads growing up. Those guys were jumpers and would jump out of my buddy’s tank so often. We eventually took him to our biology teacher’s tank(much larger than we had) it lived a good life for years. We had these kids sneak into his classroom and tried to see if their redtail shark would “beat it up” As soon as that fish hit the water the snakehead ate it whole. Crazy cool fish but crazy aggressive. In Asia they have “Chanas” a colorful variety of snakeheads that are AMAZING!! I agree though that they are not to be in the hobby.

A local health provider has 150 gallon tank that has an Indorsent Shark in the tank..Everytime when I go to the doctor I stop at the to visit the fish and the Shark has never moved one inch

I've been seeding my saltwater tank with live pods and rotifers every 6 months for the last two years, I just started seeding live Daphnia, and rotifers to my fresh water tanks since I got my two puffers, is there any danger of getting diseases , or is it's an all pro and a no con situation ? This is a great list. I saw at a local ma/pa fish store a wels catfish for sale. I was shocked and confused who's trying to keep a wels?

I believe channa are federally illegal in the US. Also, they come in all sizes and color. Many of the species stay smaller.

Ofr do have sturgeon the only thing they don't have on your list is Parana but in regards to the sturgeon they have 2 massive outdoor ponds that would be able to house it and they have just done an update to date video on a tour of the place so you guys can have a look at what's going on there because it's amazing 😊

27:35 lol this is part of the intelligence thing. Like if you feed it fish food then yeah, do Not put it back into the wild. But if you fed it what it would naturally eat in its environment then I don't see the harm.

Sometimes it takes owning something to know the issues. Just because I cut my finger it doesn't make me bad for trying to keep others from cutting there finger. Trying to stop others from repeating the same mistake isn't authoritian.
