Not only did he escort them to safety, he flew so close to them that the ground weapons couldn't shoot, as they didn't want to harm their own soldier. He saved his fellow man. A true hero!

That German pilot was extremely honorable. He escorted the flying fortress to friendly airspace as he knew they were no longer a threat. He stayed in formation to ensure they don't get fired at by German AA. He met the Charlie later in life as well. It's a good example of humanity in war (to juxtapose the many horrible things we do in war).

Chivalry was not entirely dead in WW2. Pilots were after the airframe, not the crew - same as my cousin in the Falklands, he was always relieved to see the other pilots' parachute. A heavily damaged bomber, bombs already gone, is not much of a threat. Even Wittgenstein, a leading German night-fighter ace, shot down bombers in a way which let the crew escape - avoiding firing at the bomb-bay or fuel-tanks. Sabaton should be compulsory for history teachers to play to classes!

Franz showed mercy and while he never got the medal, he got a friend and a Sabaton song...you can't do any better than that. Just think of all the people that are alive today because of that decision he made to spare a crippled and helpless plane. Another great one you'll love Benny is Night Witches (ua-cam.com/video/5YPo8zDkvy4/v-deo.html), the all female 588th Russian bomber group who fought the German war machine in WW II with old WW I biplanes made of wood and canvas, a lesson here of what true devotion and courage truly means.

To get the whole story, might I suggest the book "A Higher Call." The code Franz flew by was instilled by his first CO during the north African campaign. "If I catch you firing on a man in a parachute, I will shoot you down myself." To Franz, the Pub was little more than a parachute. Ten men who could no longer fight was no honorable victory should he press the switch.

Gustav Rödel did continue his speech with: "You follow the rules of war in your own interest, not in the interest of your enemy. You fight by rules to preserve your own humanity." It is also mentioned in the book, which stuck to him.

Imagine someone bombing your country, but you still decide to choose honour, respect and humanity. Unbelievable. ❤ Love Sabaton, love your reaction.

Sabaton has one other animation like this for their song Night Witches. I think you would enjoy it.

It’s actually yarnhub that tells the story and does the animation, yarnhub probably is the best history channel out there

Oh, sorry - one more thing - if you look up "Sabaton History" and No Bullets Fly, there is a great history video (it's kinda short - maybe 15 min?) - you might like it.
Keep doing reaction vids brother - hope you are well.

By far, my favorite Sabaton song, and the one I can most relate to.
I live near Bremen (the place they bombed) and Oldenburg (where they almost crashed),
and one of my Opas (Grandpa) was a AA-gunner at the Atlantikwall, in the Netherlands.
    I wonder if he saw a BF-109 escorting a B-17?
    Great reaction.

Hey! Great react! If you liked this one try the Sabaton song "Night Witches" w/Yarnhub (the folks who did the animation for this one) - but do the LONGER one - it has the story, just like this one, in the beginning.
Hope you are well and keep doing videos!

And some people wonder why I choose metal music over other popular genres. Metal is ABOUT something, and it's beautiful in so many ways.

At the time, airplanes had no radar. So victory often went to whoever saw the enemy first. Needless to say, eyesight was very important. Signaling to another pilot with hand gestures shouldn't be too difficult.

It wouldn't matter about the radio communication Ye Olde Pubs radio was destroyed. Franz tried to get them to land for fear they'd eventually crash, when they refused he mouthed and pointed towards "Sweden" hoping they'd turn to fly to the neutral country which was much closer than trying to make it home. When they again refused he was determined to get them over the channel safely so he flew in formation counting on the anti aircraft gunners not firing because he was there. Only when they were far enough over the channel that they were truly out of the kill zone did Franz turn back for home.
