the german pilot was curious as to why they weren't firing at him, and flew up to them to have a look. he discovered that they were completely helpless, unable to defend themselves. his instructor had taught him to not shoot at people in parachutes as they were helpless, and he considered this bomber plane to be just as helpless. so instead of shooting them down, he decided to escort them out of the danger zone by flying right next to them. the german troops on the ground wouldn't fire at the american plane because they didn't want to risk hitting the german plane right next to it.
the "saying goodbye to the cross he deserved" is referencing the Knights Cross, a medal rewarded to german pilots for shooting down a certain number of enemy aircrafts. he was just one plane short of receiving that medal, but instead he decided to rescue this crew.

im no expert but from what i've heard about his knights cross was that he was 3 kills away from getting it but a b17 counts as 3 so it was an even juicier target atleast from what i've read i haven't fact checked this tho

Stigler had 27 points at the time he faced Ye Old Pub; he still chose not to kill them as per the words of his training officer, "if I ever hear of any of you killing wounded or unarmed men I shall shoot you myself, we are fighter pilots first; we do this not for them but for ourselves; we are warriors not butchers..." there's a book about it "a higher calling"

Fun trivia about matches... the heads of modern matches, known as safety matches, are made from red phosphorus. Their dedicated striking surface, located on the outside of the box, uses friction to convert the red phosphorus into white phosphorus, which burns readily. However, this was not always the case. In old time movies, you may see someone lighting a match on any random surface. Well, they could do that because the match heads used to be made of white phosphorus, which ignited with just the slightest friction. Turns out, carrying around easily-ignited sticks in your pocket wasn't a particularly good idea. LOL

What a great reaction. Thank you for this video (and for the shoutout). EVERY time I am watching this story video it gets me and I nearly can't contain my emotions and the tears are coming. The Knights Cross that was mentioned in the video, was a medal awarded to pilots who gained a specific number of points for aeriel victories. Shooting down a bomber with 4 engines would have gained him the remaining three points needed for gaining the medal, instead his honor and humanity were more important to him than a fancy decoration. There is a book about this incident: "A Higher Call".

Old school chivalry. Especially airmen and sailors.
We still have it with sailors today. Any ship that hears a mayday must try and aid those men.
Soldiers had it too. Now it is rare. It happened a lot in those days. You don't kill an enemy that is already hurting.
You don't ever kick a man, when he is down.
Now, nobody cares. Peps shoot on sight. Like Frankie in DayZ, he gives you a chance

Night Witches will be just as EPIC, Great story and it is true. The pilot never got his medal but he got a friend and a Sabaton song....how is that. Franz was asked to speak to a group some years later and was hesitant when he saw the large crowd, he was then told that all these people were the families of the men he showed mercy to on that day in December, 1944. If that doesn't affirm you are a hero then nothing ever will!!!!

By far, my favorite Sabaton song, and the one I can most relate to.
I live near Bremen (the place they bombed) and Oldenburg (where they almost crashed),
and one of my Opas (Grandpa) was a AA-gunner at the Atlantikwall, in the Netherlands.
    I wonder if he saw a BF-109 escorting a B-17?
    Great reaction.

May I suggest "en livstid I krig " live from Göteborg Sweden, it is in Swedish but there are subtitles.
    the lyrics are very powerful,
    how about this snippet
"I give my life for my country
    but who will miss me?
    see me like
    a husband, a friend
father and son that never will return home"
a reaction to Sabaton history channel would be interesting also

Please forgive the intrusion, however I was hoping you might look at a specific metal song for your YT channel, I don't think you've done a reaction to this song by Sabaton
"Inmate 4859", it tells the story of Witold Pilecki, a Polish soldier who infiltrated Auschwitz, literally allowing himself to be captured by the Nazis and put into hell itself so that he could pass information on what they were doing to the outside world
He also helped hundreds of prisoners to escape and poisoned many guards; after 3 years he escapes to rejoin the Polish resistance where he fought until he was betrayed and executed by then Communist aggressors
Today there are cenotaphs across Poland honoring his memory
The song has pride of place on the "heroes" album

I'm not sure how accurate the animation is but we do see Stigler trying to signal to Charlie Brown, pointing him to the east. When he flew over the bomber and under its left wing, I believe he was trying to force the bomber to turn to the east where there would most likely be a nearby German airstrip to land at. Stigler at this point was trying to take them prisoner rather than outright kill them, which would have been the more merciful option at first. Brown signals to his gunners to fire at him, but the guns are frozen and can't do this. At least that's how the animation seems to go, I'm unsure of the real story.
My guess here is that Stigler saw just how damaged the bomber was and believed there was no way it could stay airworthy enough to get back to friendly territory, almost definitely crashing in the English channel, resulting in a long drawn-out death to the waves for the remaining crew. Being taken as POWs would have been more merciful in his own eyes. Others have also mentioned the Knights Cross and how Stigler just needed one more downed bomber to get it, so I do wonder if captured enemy planes counts towards that or not.
He broke off at the end because he could see the Spitfires approaching, knowing he'd be shot down by them no matter his intentions, he departed. The Pub's fate was now out of his hands.

'The Powers That Be' want people to cross borders and kill each other; those powers are soulless beasts anymore. The soldiers themselves are just people but are forced into doing the devil's work. It's HARD stuff to deal with. Once all these stories actually manage to humanize the soldiers, it's all over. It's amazing.

The german pilots name was Franz Stigler.
He and Charlie Brown became friends after the war as Franz moved to Canada. There are quite a few videos about this on UA-cam. Recommend checking a few out and pack tissues.
I believe Franz was one air victory away from a pretty substantial award too.
:edit: Oh damn... I forgot they actually tell the story after the video haha..ok nvm then.
