Got this game yesterday because i watched you play it. Home sick. Got to lvl 40. Btw you can scale ui, I don't know if you found that yet. Fellow '88 model becoming a fan.
What I'm learning about NL through these Rogue Tower videos is that he's just not a Tower Defense guy. He's not patient enough with the basic Tower Defense concepts and he doesn't plan ahead for obvious future problems (like mana shortages) that could have been easily prevented. A related issue is that he hasn't learned how good the status effects are, so he takes minor upgrades over major ones at times. Great content regardless, and I don't get irritated if he's not min-maxing things (and I get that dealing with complex mechanics and banter is a challenge). Still, it can be more difficult to enjoy parts of these videos at times because I have to get the "take that upgrade, you idiot!" moments out of the way so I can enjoy the inevitable consequences of his actions.
Ironically the terrible UI has actually become an advantage due to this, I've found that if I just sit back far enough that I can't read what his options are it's a much more enjoyable viewing experience. It's amusing how often watching NL turns into a careful balancing act of knowing enough to stay invested but not knowing so much that his alien logic starts to become frustrating.
For me it's when he spends 2k gold upgrading all the different damage types of the Tesla towers rather than hyper focusing them on shields they're way they're supposed to be and letting his mortars strip armor
I just won the game for the first time. To be honest, I was a bit disappointed to find out that it ends at level 45. I thought Rogue-like games are supposed to be open-ended. For a long time I always lost somewhere between level 27 and 31 and I didn't know what I was doing wrong. Turns out, the "secret" is rather simple and also a bit disappointing. You just need to do 2 specialized kill zones, one where everything is specialized on destroying Health and one where everything is specialized on destroying Shield ahead of it. Armor doesn't really need its own kill zone, because when you push DPM in the Anti-Shield zone enough, Armor kind of gets destroyed as an afterthought. It also helps a lot to limit yourself to as few different turret types as possible. I won just using Ballistas, Mortars and Flame Throwers. That way you can focus your Card upgrades and get more bonuses and effects on the stuff you do have. That way your Ballistas turn into real monsters in a short time and are good at doing damage to all 3 kinds of defense. Barely needing Mana helped too. Expanding in a sensible way, trying to stretch out the enemy force, is useful too. Geography seems actually less important than I thought. I even considered aborting my winning run in the beginning, because I didn't like the map much. It was pretty flat, with only few +3 hills to build on. I upgraded most turrets to level 10 around level 30 and then, towards the end, I only got most turrets up to 12 to 16, which isn't much, but turned out to be enough. I didn't look up the DPS values and I didn't do the math, but my assumption that it is better to have 2 tier 10 Ballistas, rather than 1 tier 15 Ballistas, seems to have been correct. Especially once you have enhanced Crit Damage and Slow on them, it is way better to shoot at 2 targets at once, rather than do overkill on one target. For that you of course also need to play around with the target priority a bit. In my Health Kill Zone I told most Ballistas to go for: "Least Health / Progress / Progress", but I also sprinkled a few "Fastest / Progress / Progress" and a few "Most Shield / Most Armor / Most Health" in there, just to get the few stragglers who made it through the Shield Kill Zone with some Shield and Armor left. That way you decrease the chance that they all shoot at the same target and let others run through. I also didn't bother with Universities or any of that specialized stuff and I did not use Banditry. I basically used every card I got to upgrade the Ballistas and Mortars and then, with what was left, the Flame Throwers a bit. The one exception is that I wasted 1 card and some money on Mines and I built more Mana Banks than I actually needed. I think I did 51 or 52 Mana per second, which was more than enough, because I staggered the Flame Throwers out enough so they rarely had to shoot all at the same time. The Mines were a total waste of money and a card. I didn't lose a single HP on my Tower, but because it was my first time winning and I didn't even know that level 45 is the end, I was too cautious. Even Big Brain Oogie died before he even reached my actual Health Death Zone. I do think though that increasing the range on the Mortars is counter-productive. It just reduces the rate of fire and increases the number of times they shoot at stuff that is already dead when their shell hits the ground. So I steered clear of that one. The reason why I say I am disappointed is that it seems if you follow that simple, basic strategy, there is not much that can go wrong. So now I'm not sure how much replay value the game will have. At the moment it looks as if, barring any possible upgrades to the game, once I won all 3 difficulty levels, I'll be done with the game. May be that the other difficulties require other strategies, but even if, I now think that once you found the right strategy, winning becomes a formality. I haven't unlocked all the different turrets yet, but I also have the strong suspicion that this game has the same flaw as so many such games have, where upgraded versions of the basic starter turrets tend to be way better than any of the more fancy ones, making them window dressing and filler without any real use. In the time you need to draw the right card and unlock some fancy-shmancy Laser Obelisk, or whatever, you can already have your Ballistas upgraded to a level that makes the new stuff pointless. If I would ever reset and restart the game, I wouldn't even unlock any of the turrets past the Flame Thrower, to keep their useless cards out of the deck and increase the draw probability on the Ballista, Mortar and Flame Thrower upgrades. And no, I don't think I was particularly lucky. As I said, the map wasn't that great. I got 2 farms next to the tower and 3 more further away, which only gave me room to build 2 to 3 turrets next to them. So I didn't make much from those and I was short on money basically till level 35 or so, which is why I didn't upgrade most of my turrets past level 10 to 12.

I had completely forgotten penis music was even a thing. LEgit haven't even heard the term since the meme came into existence some time last year. What an unexpected throwback
