as you approach the end of the game, you'll get nothing but portals, because every path will be terminated with a portal by the time you start the final wave.
I don't know whether they patched that out, but it was possible to get less than the usual number of portals. I had one extreme game where the path never branched and then spiraled in till it only had room for 1 portal and from there on all the enemies were coming out of that one portal. You don't have to click on "expand" anymore, logically, since there is nothing to expand and instead the new round just starts automatically once you selected your upgrade. It was the easiest game ever, since pretty much all my longer ranged turrets could hit every enemy from the moment they came out of the portal. And I didn't even have the Radar unlocked yet. I think it was my 9th or 10th time playing the game and it was fun, but it also made me melancholic because I feel I encountered "peak good luck" that early and I will probably never see such a thing happening again. I had one more though where I only ended up with 4 portals.

I've had a map branch like 5 times, and I've had a map branch 10+ times Spoilers: That's actually what the 1 secret achievement is; have the map completely block itself off. Theres merit to having them early and late. If you have them at the very start of a path, you have the bleed ticking right away, so any additional towers don't have to worry about regen'ing hp. If you have them later in the path, the blade can cleave more of the path. I think the correct option is a mix of both. I would still lean towards closer to your tower because the shredders are HP focused, so you'd rather have some time for shield and armor stripping to happen first.
Yeahm I think the humble level 1 ballista with "slow" is the best tower to put near the start. Shredders should be plached away from merges because many sawblades take the wronh turn. Also, sawblades tend to disintegrate after hitting X enemies, so putting them as close as possible to the fort isn't necessary.
36:14 Remember, the best tower is the one that's actually placed and doing damage. The +6 spots should always be occupied with something. Remember that you can always get a gold refund on a tower, at the cost of exp. If you haven't upgraded with gold, you lose nothing, so you're allowed to change your mind later.
I find universities a waste of time and money, at least at the lowest difficulty level. I haven't played the 2 and 3 paths yet, but the basic 1 path game is getting boringly easy once you figure out what to do and if the map generation doesn't totally screw you. I guess the university bonuses might stack up nicely if you could get them sooner, but at the time when you find the first spot to put them, the game is kind of over and you got so many upgrades on your turrets that the stuff you get from the universities doesn't really do much anymore.

NL, if you cant be bothered to level every tower when it gets cheap enough, going for "quality over quantity" helps mitigate that problem slightly, as it will passively increase damage as they level up

Poison Sprayers are amazing. Get the poison perks which slows down enemies. Set the sprayer to target fastest, most armor, progress. Shreds everyone. Pair it with a flame thrower right next to it targeting least shields, most armor, progress. Then place a shredder a little bit down the path. The sprayer and flamer will strip off all the shields and armor. The shredder will wipe everyone else out. If you start with one path, just reinforce the hell out of everything before it splits. Placing a tower out in BFE doesn't help at all, unless it can target everyone. Maybe mortars out in the outback. But the sprayers shred so hard.

I think a good QoL update for this would be able to save preset target priorities for towers. So right when you buy a mortar, for example, it will be MA, MH, Slowest by default.

For 10 universities a 1% chance for each university gives you around a 10% chance per wave of getting an upgrade. After 5 waves, that's a ~50% chance of getting an upgrade, for each of the upgrade types. So yes NL that 1% chance matters. Math: (1-(0.99)^10)*5 = 0.48 which is 48%

It is actually worth it, though. A ballista on a house generates ~900+ gold over the course of the game, can be sold at any time to recoup the current ballista price, and ALSO shoots enemies.

I've noticed a trend where NL is on top of shield and armor damage but almost entirely ignores the fact that every enemy has health and you do need to do damage to health as well.
On the subject of Isaac speed runs, I used to love watching 7-character speedruns on the original Isaac, and then 10 character speedruns for Rebirth. Often this meant you couldn't reset for the best items on any character except for the first because the timer keeps going in between characters. I remember a time when 7 character/10 character runs took up the majority of streams in the Isaac community, and I think it's far preferable to the classic Isaac speedrun, otherwise known as "reset for Epic Fetus." Though I say this as someone who fell out of the community a number of years ago.
Ryan, if you are a man of the slow cooker or instantpot, then chashu is not out of your reach. It takes about as much time as roasting, a few days and with a marinade a chashu is way more tolerable grease wise.
Thank god he got the slowing card on the poison sprayers because he didn't realize their damage was the only thing separating him from annihilation by shielded units.
Universities can be ridiculously OP with some luck and a lot of investment. I had a game where I had around +80 combined to bonus health/armor/shield damage by the time I hit wave 45. My towers were deleting everything.
So I Just beat the final wave! (yes it has an end) Super tough but I got the crazies map ever. I basically got a map that swirled and then ended on a portal in the middle. Imagine a honey bun but rectangle. Super tense and loved it. Thank you for showing me this game btw! :)
I just died exactly the same way - except I was trying a manaless build with just ballistae and shredders. I think my ballista purchase costs were in the 1300s and my last shredder cost 3800 at the end.
You dont need to sell towers and rebuild closer, personally I just build a bunch of encampments close to the tower so they have time to build up a ton of mines, it's hillarious when they're upgraded and blow up literally everything that even comes close >
Most cuts of meat that are just muscle usually are pretty bad. The only way to make them good is to season them well and put them in a stew or make a soup with the meat cause even if it becomes dry you always can get a little bit of soup to rehydrate your mouth.
Mortars are satisfying, but I feel like they aren't as good as they feel like, you know what I mean? When you look closely at what they actually do, you'll see that they'll waste like half of their shots on targets that are already dead when the shell lands and it seems there is very little you can do about that through targeting priorities.
What sense does it make to build two universities at the occult place, upgrade 1st to 10% armour and the 2nd to 10% shields? You could just upgrade a single 1 to 0% health/10% armour/10% shields and save 500 gold. Same goes for building 4 of them at one place.
Each upgrade you buy for universities costs more than the last, so spreading upgrades across multiple universities ends up being more efficient after a few upgrades. Plus, if you take cards that add bonus % to universities, building 4 instead of 1 will give you 4x as much % to start with. Appreciate the corgi pic btw!

Planes trivialize the first 3 bosses, I've found
Does the +3 mean only how high the tower is or also damage boost?
I clicked away from this and back to it a few days later.. left it at 35:35
Mortars are satisfying, but I feel like they aren't as good as they feel like, you know what I mean? When you look closely at what they actually do, you'll see that they'll waste like half of their shots on targets that are already dead when the shell lands and it seems there is very little you can do about that through targeting priorities.
What sense does it make to build two universities at the occult place, upgrade 1st to 10% armour and the 2nd to 10% shields? You could just upgrade a single 1 to 0% health/10% armour/10% shields and save 500 gold.
Same goes for building 4 of them at one place.
Each upgrade you buy for universities costs more than the last, so spreading upgrades across multiple universities ends up being more efficient after a few upgrades. Plus, if you take cards that add bonus % to universities, building 4 instead of 1 will give you 4x as much % to start with.
