Scarlet Dawn Scout Report 1:
Today we sent out a small satellite that the Legion wouldn’t detect at their current tech level. And what we discovered was quite worrying having faced this Chaotic Legion before: The Legion had captured a “Moray” and last we checked it wasn’t operational but now it most certainly is. We knew he was an amazing engineer but this is mad. In a single day Lathrix (The Legions Leader) has converted the empty husk of the Moray into a powerful weapon for long range. Where there was once empty space now contains: a Railgun that takes up about a third of the total interior of the ship, missiles (as usual) and surprisingly that’s all. But even with its limited weaponry the modified Moray husk managed to kill a Crossbones with little trouble.
So, what did we learn today? We learnt that The Legion is advancing far faster than anyone expected or wanted. We will make another report when The Legion, especially Lathrix, does something interesting.

Lathrix should fight the Scarlet Dawn after the DWG. I think it would be fair.
By that I mean: there wouldn’t be any challenge otherwise (he is too powerful) and it would be an interesting addition to the story.
The space above Neter, normally famous for being completely blank of literally any stars at all, was currently lit up in a blaze of a full-on space battle. Missiles streaked back and forth between the two opponents, particle cannon beams lit up the space between them in blades of red and blue. Lasers pulsed, shooting down missiles or cutting swathes into thick armour plating, and the pure white tracers of hypervelocity railgun slugs tore through space, armour, and vital components.
Amidst all the chaos was a 1200-meter long vessel, one of the many battlecruisers of the Resistance Council fleet. She was covered in weapon emplacements and point defense guns, and at her thickest point she had over ten meters of pure steel protecting her - surrounded entirely by an incredibly powerful shield, capable of stopping incredible amounts of laser fire or deflecting an unlucky railgun slug. Her name was RCV (Resistance Council Vessel) Blood and Iron, and her Captain was one Rear Admiral Owen Wright.
“Heavy cruise missiles incoming from vector two-three-five, inclination positive twelve degrees. Targeting with pulse lasers, ETA until railgun targeting one minute.”
The ship’s AI, Katherine, called out amidst the controlled chaos of the Iron’s bridge, filled with status reports and damage control officers directing their repair bots to damaged sections of plate.
Wright nodded. The salvo of forty large and sixty medium missiles would likely get through his ship’s laser net, but the rail-propelled CIWS and missile interceptors would hopefully knock them down several kilometers before they even got into visual range. Just in case, a 350-meter light frigate had come up alongside his own warship to assist with point defense. What Wright was far more worried about, however, was that damned Legion flagship. The three-kilometer long beast had been tearing apart the destroyers and frigates of the Resistance’s fleet like a hot knife through butter with its five.. super-lasers of sorts. In fact, his ship’s incredibly powerful port shields had just been downed by one of those weapons, which itself had already cut through a frigate. If that smaller ship hadn’t been there.. the Iron would’ve had a hole cored through her at best, and who knows what would’ve happened to his pride and glory at worst.
That wasn’t where that ship’s armament stopped, either. The thing had been throwing around railgun slugs as if it was going out of style, and had to have had at least a thousand heavy cruise missiles slapped somewhere. And to add on top of THAT, it had an extensive point defense network, shields at least on par with his battlecruiser’s, and armour to match.
“We can’t take another hit like that. Ready bow particle cannons one and two, a full salvo of our medium and heavy missiles, and arm our nukes. Keep the spinal railguns offline for now.”
“Helm! I want a collision course with that enemy dreadnought. Make it happen, and give me a ten-second burn from our main engines. Prepare port-side emergency thrusters.”
The helmsman looked back at him with a confused expression.
“Sir? We just took a hit like THAT, and you’re telling us to get closer?”
“Just do it, Lieutenant, or we’re all dead. Weapons, how’re the particle cannons doing?”
As the ship lurched forwards and fired a full spread of two hundred large and four hundred medium missiles, a Lathryxian strike-craft was simply obliterated by a slug from one of the portside anti-ship railguns, which had scored a lucky hit with hollow point ammunition.
“Spun up and online. Firing on command.”
“Open fire.”
Two sky-blue lances streaked out from the bow of the Council Battlecruiser, hitting nearly instantaneously on the bow of the Chaos vessel. One of the superlasers went down, but little other damage was done.. and the Iron was now marked a priority target by the demonic crew.
Before the Rear Admiral could give out any further orders, two blood-red beams of laser fire were spewed out by the Legion flagship’s bow laser emitters. One laser, it’s emitter damaged earlier in the battle, only managed to bring down the reconstituted bow shields. The second, however, tore a hole straight through the mighty warship - the beam hitting on the port bow, then literally passing through the ship in a matter of seconds and exiting the starboard side amidships. Luckily for the frigate that had pulled up beside them, the beam ran out of power (having used the majority of its charge to burn a hole through the much larger warship) fast enough their weaker shields weren’t even brought down.
“Status report!” Wright shouted, as the fire suppression systems activated to stop the fire on the bridge from getting any worse. An ensign manning one of the sensor consoles screamed as her console exploded, showering her with sparks.
Katherine spoke up again.
“Hull breaches on decks eighteen through twenty six. Explosive decompression on nearly all outer decks, already sealed or sealing all bulkheads in affected areas. Twenty-three percent of our crew is either dead, or missing and presumed so. Particle cannons one and two are offline, anti-ship railguns four through eight will need extensive repairs. Missile pods eight through ten are permanently down, and CIWS/LAMS mounts twelve through seventeen have been vaporized. Our spinal railguns and our nukes are still online and loaded, however, and the enemy’s shields seem to have been downed from a salvo by the frigate Bombay.
The Rear Admiral, shocked at the amount of damage his vessel had taken from a single salvo and realizing how lucky he was it hadn’t struck the ammo or engines, nevertheless kept his composure and nodded as his mind raced to come up with a response.
“Turn off every single system, barring our spinal railguns. Shunt all power to them, and turn on every single backup engine we have - I don’t care how badly we’re going to overload their capacitors, but I need those guns firing as fast as we can possibly get them to fire. Fire emergency thrusters to avoid the remaining missile salvo, and let loose both of our nukes. Cover them with a salvo of every single anti-fighter missile we have.. we need to distract those point defenses.”
He looked back at the view screen, showing the accursed flagship far out of visual range. The thing’s ventral and dorsal lasers spun up, both targeting some 550-meter Resistance Destroyers, and glowed red as they prepared to fire.
“Fire those guns as fast as you can make them, Lieutenant. Now.”
The bridge lights dimmed to a dull red emergency lighting, as nearly a thousand anti-fighter missiles came off of their rails and streaked towards the enemy flagship. Following them came the two massive nukes the battlecruiser carried - they were intended for orbital bombardment, but they would have to do for now.
Most of the missile swarm was picked off by the thing’s lasers and railguns before they ever impacted, but one of the nukes made it to its target.
The railgun slugs hit first, however. A five-hundred millimeter hollow point slug hitting at just over a hundred kilometers per second was certainly a powerful weapon, and those guns were firing at a rate of one slug every ten seconds. The first two splattered against the armour, but then another two impacted. And another two. And another two after that. After the sixth shot, both railguns simply collapsed from the stress of having their capacitors overloaded by such an extreme amount...
...but the damage was already done. The Lathryxian vessel was full of holes, belching flame and fuel from one of its several reactors, and most notably had a massive gouge torn through it by one of the slugs. This massive rip in the ship’s defenses was exactly where the nuclear missile flew into.. and detonated.
The crew cheered as the demonic flagship broke apart in front of them, emerging from the nuclear hellfire with no less than one-sixth of its mass instantly vaporized - more than enough for a mission kill. The Chaos fleet, meanwhile, jumped out of the area. For now, they would be content with sniping any brave shuttle pilots that tried to send reinforcements down to the surface.. but they would be back, and with far more ships.
Looking at the carnage around him - the Council had traded no less than forty-three ships for barely sixteen of the enemy, and nearly every Resistance vessel had suffered minor to moderate damage - Wright sighed, and looked at his helmsman. His ship was now the flagship of the fleet, the previous one having been vaporized by a full alpha strike from that behemoth of a flagship, and so he had command..
“Reform the battle line over the Watch’s fortress. We still have a battle to fight.. and I think I have a way to win it.”
Let me know how you like this longer, much much different style of writing! I’ll be doing the other type, of course - those are actually based on events that happen in the campaign, after all, and I can’t exactly just stop making them. However, I was thinking of adding on another story from a different perspective. So just let me know if you’d like to see me alternate between the two storylines, posting the campaign-related one on one video and this side-quest of sorts on the next, or if you’d prefer I did purely the campaign-related stuff. Also, criticism of any kind is always welcome - I’m just some random UA-cam commenter, so go ham. (But please keep in mind this was all written in barely a half hour, 45 mins tops.) I’d prefer something constructive, of course, but.. Flame me if you’d like!

“The Lathrixian Legion’s technical division’s completion of the Moray took place at their ‘Open Water Workshop’, the same facility which gave birth to the formidable Prototype 2 bomber, which terrorised the Deep Water Guard. Despite possessing some data on the original vessel, the engineers in charge of the project decided to build the vessel’s internal systems and weaponry from scratch, keeping the hull as the only link to it predecessor. This turned out to be a good decision as the project engineers discovered, much to their despair and annoyance, that many components had been replaced by facsimiles and mimic. To this day the reason why the DWG replaced these components, which included sections of its armour, but one theory was that the DWG was struggling to complete the vessel, but tried to hide it from the Legion.
Despite this set back, and the Engineer’s reputation for drinking on the job, the ‘refit’ of the Moray was successful. The airship was equppied with a medium caliber railgun, which was capable of gutting battleships. It was designed to act as assault artillery ship, pelting the enemy from a distance with rail gun slugs, with its secondary armament mostly intended to act as a defensive measure against opponents who managed to close the distance. Despite being close to the cost and weight of the original Moray, it was without doubt, a superior craft, further demonstrating the technological superiority the Legion had over the DWG.”

Great comment but as the lad who updated the Gantry myself I have to say not the most accurate.
All those mimics are in place where actual functioning parts would be. But structures (Moray Gantry) can't have movement parts like thrusters, wings, etc. So I mimicked them on. The engine is mimicked due to it being a huge performance hit for something that doesn't need that much HP (Moray Gantry) as it isn't using that power for anything.
The regular Moray is very lean on mimicked and barely used any.
When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie that's the Moray. When the world seems to shine like you've had too much wine that's the Moray.
When the CRAMs rip a wide hole into your side, that's the Moray

DWG Intelligence Report:
The demon took the bait. He went after the Moray we mothballed, and our spies report that after his engineers found out we replaced all vital components with cheap plastic mimics, the demon retreated to his quarters with a bottle of liquor mumbling "damn mimics". While in the past, his binge drinking sessions have produced terrifying weapons such as the Prototype, a cargo plane he accidentally turned into a bomber, it is likely he will waste hours upon hours trying to make what is essentially a 1:1 scale model into a warship, which should buy us some time.
Addendum: THAT DEMON! According to updated intel that son of a cur came grumbling out of his quarters with an empty crate of liquor bottles under one arm and a blueprint for a retrofitted Moray in the other hand... in less than 16 HOURS!! Needless to say, Operation Fishbone-in-throat was a massive failure. We have just added a new warship to the Legion's catalogue.
... WE'VE BEEN DUPED! The Deepwater just used mimics!
Gratefully, we've still got approximately 237,872,012 wine cellars left, and codename "mimic" was made , and with all that booze, we'll have so many superweapons that it'll make the nuke look like a child's playtoy

It's me again in the comments from your last video.
The reason why it has so many Mimics is because Structures can't have movement components such as thrusters, jets, ion, wheels, sails, wings, paddles, etc.
The mimics for the movement parts to give it the unfinished and unbuilt look but most importantly for people like you who wants to know where to put thrusters and components back in if you want to finish/ retrofit the Moray! And I am so happy that I planned for something like this for me to see you do it first thing when you saw it.
Oh and those wooden slopes were mimics so they better connected to that weird angle on the Moray.
Also the winglets are mimicked on the Moray too as I said earlier you can't have wings on structures.
I am pretty happy you enjoyed it so much and me over designing it came into fruition here.
It made me happy that I put in the effort and it paid off.

i have some ideas for ships:
1: a stealth submarine that sneaks up under enemy ships before releasing a garage of small torpedoes straight up.
2:a guardian ship built exclusively to screen other more vulnerable ships from enemy fire (anti missile missiles, anti air, anti munition systems, extremely stacked armor, you name it)
3:a self sustaining space station with ONE MASSIVE PARTICLE CANNON (I think it would just be fun to call in an orbital strike ), also you could stick one of those massive radars to it In order to help uncover the map.
extra ideas(requires warp drive):
4: the deceiver, looks like an average battle ship, BUT it moves straight towards the target at high speeds and when it comes close enough it uses a warp drive to teleport diagonally upwards straight above the target, revealing that its keel is coated in rams as it crashes down on its opponent.
5: the spazzer: has 4 short range, fast charging warp drives facing different directions (I think you know what it does)

Your From the Depths series is officially my favourite. I love the content and I love drunk Lathrex thank you for the content.
This comment is probably gonna get lost in the sea of comments but I just want to tell you a little something about frag vs wood. Frag has a very low AP (6) but a very high damage potential. Wood has extremely low armor class (3) and since you need 2x the AC in AP to deal full damage, this means frag deals 100% of its massive damage to wood. It is undoubtedly the best shell to use vs the DWG, and it is best used at 23° cone angles. I hope you see this and find it helpful.
My Recommendation:
planning ahead the "Lore" of this Playthrough, this should be the Early Prototype of a Full Railgun Airship based on the captured Moray Shell
the Full Railgun ship should be a long range support bombardment ship, snipping foes from affar while the brawlers absorb the damage
it should get a beffed up spinal railgun and energy generation and maybe the Ability To Change Shell Types depending on the target (there is an option for the ACBs to change what shell a gun should have, but never figured it out how to actually change it)
the idea here is to have different shells for armored targets, maybe APHE or full AP, and HE for lighter targets
and should be Build AFTER the Deep water guard is defeated, as a counter against the Onix Watch armour maybe
meanwhile this one is the only one, or one of two prototypes for testing and gathering data for the full version
maybe you can figure out the interchangable shells in this prototype

Hey lathrix here are some of my suggestions: #1 you could add some tiny missile interceptors (variable thruster/turning thruster/APS guidance/interceptor head) in tiny missile pods like the ones on the original. #2 add some strafing thrusters so the moray can do some cool drifts. #3 hide the roll and pitch thrusters 1 block deeper and cover them with vents.
Also while you’re possibly still here. That one weird ship called the winters day from months ago in the adventure mode. Is onyx watch. Such a weird onyx watch ship

Also now I remember that most of my flagships and general ships are long range defensive ships, expect they stay at 3 Kilometers from the enemy, and for my flagship, 5 Kilometers. Yes I don't regret not being able to EVEN see the enemy from my ship.
Heh. Back before the APS nerf/limit on railgun power draw, I had a railgun that shot a 500mm hollow point at 100 km/s.. if the game’s hitreg actually managed to detect the shell, it could literally delete the fore half of a Bulwark.
What do you use nowadays for long range fire? I’ve not really been able to get railguns to work really well at far range.
I used the same thing, 500mm hollow point. But not at 100,000m/s instead it was around 1,250 - 1,500 m/s. And they did destroy a good chunk of armour (from the bulwark) BUT the railguns are rapid fire with around 2 - 3 shots every second.

I'd recommend to make it a logistics vessel since there's so much space left. You need to take care of logistics at some point, so why not with this craft?
He’ll probably end up making a separate logistics-only craft, since he wants to make really specialized vehicles

one idea I thought of that's interesting is similar to the nuke drones you used to have,
but instead make them drilling into the target with spin blocks. And make a unique one of them for if you're capturing the enemy ship.

I currently only know simple weapons, missiles, and I can kinda build a cramped cannon. I only use electric engines. Because I dont know how to build the other ones yet. I just started using detection systems rather than the automatic detection. I have found a whole new love for this game. I am quite new with about 60 hours. It amazes me how anyone builds like this. Thank you for introducing me to such an amazing game.

you know I literally jsut looked on the youtubes for a new episode of this series, couldnt find it, watched the new mumbo jumbo minecraft hermitcraft episode, and then came here and saw this. what a time
The wooden slope mimics were actually there so the slopes could rest against metal slopes, which in my opinion, is absolutely brilliant.
Also, you cam change the sandbox detection system settings. I forget how, but I know you can.
id love to see a full video/livestream of you building/retrofitting a design. it seems like it would be a really cool process that I've never really done myself

This was released yesterday for me and it recommended to me 5:30 in the morning. Anyways Lathrix you should have special cannon fodder craft that is just layers of metal, and the new rail Gun moray should be called “RailMond”

I really dont think the fights look boring if you have the airship stay far away. Also i think its kinda sad not to use the full potential of a craft. Its way more satisfying to see a craft be efficient and deadly than having it behave cinematic :)

Reason for all the mimicked propulsion parts is that it was part of a building, and propulsion parts cannot normally be placed on buildings or fortresses. There is also a mimic view which identifies all mimic blocks. I can't remember what you press to get it, but I'm certain it can be accessed in the bottom left where it says "Press middle mouse to scroll down." That's also where the cross-section tool is.
APHE to put the kinetic energy from the rails into use, there's also a option to view only mimics now (middle mouse button, the ribbon top right). if the cooling/recoil/chargers are a PITA; a squash head strong enough to take out a metal beam and frags with low cone is also pretty cool, it's like a inverted tandem shaped charge.

I think a cool design for a missile system would be one that launches missiles radially from all directions, and have them turn to face the enemy. E.g missiles shoot up, left, right, and down relative to the front of the craft, and have them track from there. I think the effects from the trails will be neat. Plus missiles!
Is the stellaris just taking an astronomical amount of recording time again? No complaints I love your stellaris and almost watch it exclusively in the genre and depending on time your channel, I really appreciate how much work you put into them, they’re lovely to watch after a workday.

The reason is has so many mimics, is because a lot of blocks, like thrusters and helium pumps, can not be placed on structures, they had to replace a lot with mimics, the engines are probably mimics because that way it wouldnt use an fuel or have any performance impact and other mimics were to alloy blocks to intercect.

You love spinal railgun cannons too much
after playing prey and dealing with all the shape shifting mimics in that game the idea of a ship built almost entirely out of mimics is terrifying
My main suggestion is this: small simple cannons on turrets in those side balconies, don't even add an AI, just have them there to play with and as boarding cannons if you end up using this thing as a boarding vessel.
I think it would be really cool to add depth charges and torpedoes into the red light areas to make it like an anti submarine "ship", the lore being just to the uncommon usage of them there was no need to design to design new ships however having all these captured morays it would be a good idea to have a few just in case
Make an 8m shell launching deathgun...you know you want to! Think of it as insurance when you fight the heavily armored enemies later on, for now it'd just be amusing to watch a little wooden hull craft get completely annihilated.
Point-defense on the sides to deal with enemy aircraft and missiles. Maybe something heavy but fairly quick in the forward turret to counter glass cannons that keep moving out from in front of the ship.
I suggest you make this an ammo processor craft, to help keep the darts supplied. To build further upon that idea, maybe you could make a small "Core Fleet" comprised of several vessels that, in addition to providing some sort of combat specialty, contain some form of Resource support. For example, some sort of long range submarine that would also carry raw materials. Perhaps a cram battleship with a decent fuel refinery. As I suggested before the Mimic-ray could also produce Ammunition.

Possibly turn one set of the observation bays into a countermissile/decoy battery? Something like the casemated small missile turrets you toyed with last episode (azimuth only, or fixed tube), and load them with semi-agile missile interceptors and/or flares.
Ooh, or refit another version for close range, and use the little observation bays as literal jumping-off points for capturing. Or, for that matter, you could use them as docking points for the Darts/other little drones.
You could use the simple AA weapons to target missiles rather than aircraft, since there is the darts for that very same purpose and that the key word of that campain is specialisation.
I think the main gun should fire slowly but have really strong shells, while the side weapons are just weak AA like they are right now, so it has a more obvious anti-ship role

This series is turning out very air oriented. Just an observation :-)
So not a suggestion for the craft itself, but rather for a type of crsft: basically one that's heavily armored and shielded, gets up close to draw enemy fire, but the catch: no true offensive capability. It could have things like missiles and lasers, but they'd specifically be countermeasures against enemy weapons, shooting down incoming CRAM shells, diverting or shooting down enemy missiles.

Multiplayer is annoying as it removes features like god mode and undo/redo whilst building
Anti-missile/AA cannons on the sides, use it as a limited dual role ‘cruiser’, some heavy fire power, lots of AA/point defense, medium low armor. Just a thought
Casements are really sweet weapons. Currently using them on a sub build I am working on, super cavitation base is really nice to be able to shoot guns underwater.
The side guns give it a sweet Star Destroyer vibe

If you dont use autoloaders, a shell can be longer than the 8 meter max. So if you want memes, a 50 meter graviram
