Stephen, Your marathon plan is the dog's bollocks! No joke - nothing I have done before compares. I've run 4 marathons, with a 2:56 at 43 my best todate, and this plan has me fitter in 4 weeks than I've ever been. Great work! week 4, 10k time trail on sunday as per the plan PR is going to be in the bag at 95%.
No channel compares when talking about mindset. He straddles that line between being kind to yourself with things that are out of your control but kicking yourself in the arse when you are being complacent. It's a tough line and most channels are very much one side or the other, it also takes a lot of self awareness to recognise when you should be kind or hard on yourself.
If it wasn’t for this channel I would have hung it up a long time ago. Possibly one of the most important influences I’ve had in my athletic career. Made me love the sport again.
You just intuitively cover virtually every question I could come up with, and with enough details to take a real look at what prep really takes. Just what I need
Not that I'm gonna blow my own trumpet here.. well I am, but I think I say things out loud, then my brain naturally thinks (ah that won't make sense yet etc..) then I try to elaborate.. if I don't get distracted haha before that. But I appreciate your comment.
Just became a new member for the down to earth, natural, supportive, reflective and most of all super motivational and informative content of your channel. Thanks a million!
The gear looks stunning, can’t wait to order some! Loving the videos as well. I started training for my first marathon this year after not running for 18 months. It was rough. Had quite a few ups and downs with injuries and the race itself was incredibly hard. It was an incredibly rewarding experience though and I’m now training for my first half.
Just jumped over to order the long tights and a L/S Tee! A very much 'mid - pack' runner, I became 'emotionally dependent' on compression tights as I rehab'd from a total hip replacement in 2020. An irrational fear of the leg falling off, I think!! Since then, I've completed Marathon Eryri 3 times and Newport once, along with various shorter event - all in 2XU. But on the back of really appreciating your content - I bought a couple of pairs of your marathon half tights at the end of 2024, along with a couple of 26.2 vests. I'm not sure that I'm ready for one of your training plans, Stephen - but I bloody love running in the gear!! And the content. Keep it up, mate.
I ran 3 Marathons last year chasing a PB that never came. I was well above PB shape in the third Marathon last October, and was going for a 30 mins PB up to 37Km. Then I got cramps in the quads and race was over. My body was clearly telling me to stop. Three marathon blocks one after the other proved to be simply too much. So back to the drawing board. I took 2 weeks off after the October Marathon and since then I have been doing easy runs building base and mileage very slowly. I completely removed pace and distance from my watch and go only by time and heart rate. Running easy requires time and patience. I do miss the tough sessions but I try to stay disciplined. I also do quite some strength work. This year I will target only one Marathon in October and until then only a few half marathons and 10Ks to have some fun and build up the speed . Let's see how this plan works out! Happy new (running) year Stephen and everyone. Stay healthy and enjoy every single run out there.
Yes, often fitness can be in a better place than be body physically. I’ve found that lately actually, I’m (sprinting) on the treadmill, at least it feels like I am.. (kind off) but effort and heart rate is fab. I know it’s because my hips, quads, hamstrings etc have too much tension and so I’m kind of fighting that, so it feels hard work to run faster, but the engine is ok. The body is both fitness and chassis.. we must help the chassis or we can’t produce the goods on race day
Great video, I've been following your journey for a long time, and I truly think the best is yet to come for you... You are making a big impact in us and how we approach this great passion which is Marathon running. Thank you for everything you do.
This has come at the perfect time for me. I ran well at Valencia and I am now 10 weeks away from my next marathon. Its good to know that high level runners have the same type of considerations to contend with. Thanks as ever for the tips. You have the best running channel around (along with Sweat Elite) in my opinion. Thanks again mate!
That’s very kind, but it’s always unique content to each different athlete that’s willing to post etc. I don’t intend to be the BEST, but when I post I’d just like it to be really helpful etc.. if the goal was to have the BEST, even tho I’m not entirely sure what would dictate that. (Views, likes, subscribes etc..) then I’d focus on that, but that’s never been my goal. When I started a podcast (and still to this day) I put in my air pods while driving etc and talked freely.. the goal was to educate and talk to runners. Not to build the best running podcast etc.. if I ever did, or do in future, it would only be via doing something I’ve really enjoy. Views and likes are easy.. click bait content etc.. but it’s not the only part of content that matters.
Got your marathon plan 6 months ago and coming from an out of shape state I have been steadily improving fitness without injury. Planning to complete the Vienna marathon in under 4 hours. Thank you for your great plan
Hey mate! Been subscribed and loving your videos for a while. Currently training for my fifth race, and you've been a great help and source of inspo along the way.
Great stuff!! I'm in the undertrained vs overtrained camp. I'd much rather arrive fresh and not quite ready than burned out and on the edge of injury at the starting line!
Love the channel Stephen. I’ve been watching and taking bits of advice for over a year now and made massive improvements on my pace/threshold times! Side note: Where is this coastline in the video?
Great content and nice background with the ocean run! In the training plans, maybe you could describe at the homepage upfront how many training session per week they roughly take. That way some of the more time-restricted audience (up to 4-5 runs per week max) could also buy into it.
Happy new year! Great videos, I’m in the 13 week of your marathon training (joggingroom) my race is Miami marathon in 4 weeks 2/2/25. Coach , i had your marathon training and book. After watching your video, so for your 16 weeks training it would be good too repeat each phase , so for example completed week1 -4 star again 1-4 then move to week 5-8 and repeat 5-8. Let me know I’m checking your racing clothesss. This a great coach and provide great details and care about people!
I got the marathon tights, love them and the price is top notch too….thank you, will be wearing them at London marathon this year…love your content keep up the good work
Currently working towards a marathon in 16 weeks and my PT has suggested I concentrate on strength training and start the running properly 12 weeks before was a bit worried but you've put me at ease! Still running of course but just slowly building up the distance
Good luck in your retirement. I hope you still keep pushing out content because your channel is the best when it comes to talking about mindset and is one of the best running channels.
Ordered the Marathon plan straight after watching this video. If anyone is thinking to get it, do it! Worth the money (it’s only £19.99) you’d be a fool not to get the program if your training for anything! Thank you Stephen! Can’t wait to come back to this comment to update my marathon time in April!
great video as always and how is that coast line for a run! thanks mate your videos are so imformative and hope you are doing well post professional running!
Just ordered the Marathon Tights (probably the best 😂) and a 26.2 Vest 💪💪 loving the content and so happy you have found where to put your energy and direction for 2025
Didn't know that You are not a pro athlete anymore, watched all your previous videos, there was no mention about it. Would be interesting to hear Your thoughts about current situation in pro runners world and in what direction running business is moving. thanks
Would be a good episode, and I’d like to try help other non pro athletes figure out ways to support themselves etc financially. The performances at a top level are getting to a frightening place and so it’s increasingly difficult for young runners to aspire or dream of being pro I’d say. There must be a middle ground and make sure the sport doesn’t lose great athletes
Great video, as always. I have a marathon at the end of February and I’m about 8 weeks into a 14 week buildup, but I recently got the flu and this week I’ve been forced to sit out. How much does 7-8 days off hurt at this point? If I have 4-5 weeks left, is that enough time to regain form do you think?
Thanks for the video and advice. Suggestion ref joggingclo: Not trying to create more work for you but might be worth having one of your customers do a brief video showing what they like about the marathon shorts? Have a great 2025.
@@stephenscullion262 🤣🤣videos of me wearing your marathon shorts will not help you to increase sales 🤣🤣 but I will be buying them... you're 70kg? you wear what size?
I think you are an amazing runner being here, but I feel like an impostor being an old man and trying to start in this thing. I ran my best in Valencia at 4:15 but so many people seem to be talking about sub 3 etc. It all feels so unattainable. Oh yeah and like some the other comments on here I get negative advice from doctors having been diagnosed with osteoarthritis 10 years ago, I run against advise but feel better because of it. Anyway I am ranting, all the best to you I think you help many.
The running community has started to become as toxic as the gym bros, or maybe it’s always been that way. Gatekeepers from runnings past are telling people they aren’t “real” runners if they aren’t racing for PR/PB.
Last October I suffered an injury that took me about a week of recovery, while training for my November 10K race. I thought that if I broke my training schedule my time would suffer. Instead I got a PB! I think that bit of tapering helped.
Great content Stephen, Have you ever thought about uploading the audio content as a podcast? I'd be really happy and it would also generate a little bit of income for you. 👍😊
@stephenscullion262 yes ,some people just share their UA-cam video audio as a podcast. You could reach a different audience and watching your videos i can definitely tell that you got what it takes to be successful in that space as well 😁.
New to Running. I am 59 years old and I just completed a 5k program with IFit at 39 minutes. I have high blood pressure and asked my Dr. if I can one day run a Marathon he said our hearts are not made for running such long distances and only crazy people do them. I see a lot of older people running marathons and look healthy and happy (they probably started running really young). My question is it too late for me? Or is there a plan for someone like me to follow and complete one day a marathon.
Hi Stephen, I am training for Ironman, which I will do in August. Then I will have around 14 weeks until Valencia Marathon in December. So I have a few weeks recovery, then a 12 week training block. Any ideas on how I shift from Ironman to focusing on marathon? I will have the endurance and fitness, but then I want to get faster over the long distance. Thanks!!
I started running when I was 20. I’m 21 about to turn 22. Is it too late for me to be successful in distance running. In my first year I ran a 1:55 800 and a 43min 12k. Did I start too late in my life to have a chance at being a professional?
Do you have marathon training programs? Used a running coach last year and it was very expensive, but it was just a schedule and some text check ins, I think I could do a generic 4 hour marathon training program.
Question for you Scully; have you ever gotten plantar fasciitis? And if so, how long did it take to heal completely? I live in canada, so the sun isn't really getting through for that vitamin d right now
@stephenscullion262 i bought something similar, i used it once and set it aside. I'll try again tonight. Currently going to physio and doing some specific workouts for the foot + indoor biking. But are we talking weeks or months to recover ?
Any advice for someone who done the plan too long and peaked early i went for a 20 week plan for a 50k felt great all the way till xmas put in a great big week xmas probaly peaked tbh and now little fatigued i took it easy last week few days off hrv was crap i now have just over 4 weeks till race feb 8th and not sure what to do from now really extending taper or whether to try hit one more big week before a taper ? Thanks love the channel
How do you know if your over trained vs unwell? Twice this year in race week ive seen hrv numbers crashing, a failed last mini work out and then a complete lack of power in the space of a week. If anything the second time it happened for my UTMB trail race recently in Chiang mai (december), training wasnt too taxing going into the race and volume wise the taper was good. I sat around all race week, tried to get extra sleep, tried to nap and nothing worked. Blood work after first time round didnt show anything, just about to get my blood work done this week for the most recent disappointment, but im kinda puzzled as to what is going on.
I wish I knew the answer and often we never quite figure it out. As I’ve told myself 10 times.. the only way to perhaps find better fortune, is to reload. We’ve all experienced similar and sometimes it’s just being human. I’ve somehow had some of my best sessions when I’m very stressed, moving house, lifting furniture etc and should train awful, then feel epic.. then when I taper things down, plan a big race.. Hrv drops to shit and I feel piss poor.. it’s not always easy to understand why. Best to not over analyse and move forward
@@stephenscullion262 cool, thanks for taking the time to reply. A tad disappointing, especially as theres so many variables at play and im done the wiser really. Im back into a new block now and got some local races lined up to get back into the swing of things.
Runners knee is giving me a hard time right leg. I have 3months until my marathon. The idea of taking a week off is giving me anxiety. Thoughts? Can I just train through it?
Knee is a tricky one, depends on type of injury / niggle. Get quads loosened (a lot) do some glute exercises, and open up hips a bit. Isometric leg hold on the leg press machine can help with knee, but only if it’s under knee cap. Patella pain etc
sad your no longer a pro athlete as I've learnt more from your videos than any pro runner out there. do you think you will get back to the pro level in the future?
I started watching for the incredibly informative content, but I continued watching for the endless jealousy I feel for your beard density. Save some for the rest of us!
Pick a 50K trail ultramarathon already. It would make for great content, sharing your experience of how to apply everything you’ve learned to a new arena.
Really? So you can pass the plan for free then?! I don’t get why people selling this kind of stuff…they should be free after what they are already earning on youtube.

Do you have marathon training programs? Used a running coach last year and it was very expensive, but it was just a schedule and some text check ins, I think I could do a generic 4 hour marathon training program.
Yeah check out 262clo.com plans
Question for you Scully; have you ever gotten plantar fasciitis? And if so, how long did it take to heal completely? I live in canada, so the sun isn't really getting through for that vitamin d right now
Takes a fair while, and I’ve had it a few times. Did try a Strasbourg sock?
@stephenscullion262 i bought something similar, i used it once and set it aside. I'll try again tonight.
Currently going to physio and doing some specific workouts for the foot + indoor biking.
But are we talking weeks or months to recover ?
What if you are doing a marathon in februari, april, June and October?
Normatec recovery boots lol 😉
What sort of milage we peaking at in the marathon plan? Looking to buy but want to make sure it’s suitable.
Cheers
Best to tweak to your needs, but keep the sessions full volume.
@ Thanks for coming back to me - I bought it anyway - looks spot on - going for sub 2:50 so will tweak paces slightly. Keep on the good work mate 💪🤙
How many runs per week does the half marathon plan include? Due to life, i'm only able to do 3 running sessions per week (+1 or 2 strength workouts).
Yes another video 🫡
Loving the full beard!
Must be 2 months now it’s been growing. My longest before was 4 months
Time for a new record I think
I think the pricing is of for your website dude, saying over 1k for a pair of shorts at the moment
Don’t think so
How do you know if your over trained vs unwell?
Foam roller and start calf raises
my neck is itchy just looking at you 🤣
Interval training is no joke
Keep it up :)
💪
sad your no longer a pro athlete as I've learnt more from your videos than any pro runner out there. do you think you will get back to the pro level in the future?
You mean by title, or ability? Or experience, or knowledge, or willingness to share. I didn’t die like
@ 😂 i dunno why i said pro level but i was referring to was being back at the top level competing at the olympics again etc
I started watching for the incredibly informative content, but I continued watching for the endless jealousy I feel for your beard density. Save some for the rest of us!
Haha took it from my head
Comment for the algorithm.
Pick a 50K trail ultramarathon already. It would make for great content, sharing your experience of how to apply everything you’ve learned to a new arena.
Really? So you can pass the plan for free then?! I don’t get why people selling this kind of stuff…they should be free after what they are already earning on youtube.
You think so
