In 8 weeks from now I will run my first marathon at the age 59. I have been running for 3 years now and doing around 60 to 75km a week. The long runs are becoming a bigger part of the total distance and I love that. Last week I did a 29km (all easy) long run and this week I will put in some tempo blocks into my long run. Love the way you talk about taking on the long runs, by not making it easier by using plated shoes or running the flattest course you can find (although its hard to find a hilly course here in the Netherlands). Keep up the good work!

Hiya Stephen, been watching you for a while now and you always offer some great insight 👌 This year I’m going for a sub 70 min Half Marathon and a sub 15 5k. Two goals that have alluded me for a while now. About 2 years ago I was so close to both but picked up what proved to be a serious injury and I was out of it for a year and a half. Over the last year I’ve been working so hard to get back to a place where I feel fit and strong and I believe I’ve made it. It’s taken lots of courage and resilience and there were many times I debated quitting, but that was the easy option. I’m back and ready to get PB’s again. Keep it up mate! All the best.

Ran a 3:10 for my second marathon, planning to run under 2:55 in April to BQ. Biggest difference between this training block and my last block is the amount of consistency and adherence to my training plan. I am a travel healthcare worker so I'd make excuses about completing my runs (especially long runs) but I've begun working with a coach to build a solid base before my marathon build, in which I have consistently ran/cross trained 6x a week for 11weeks so far.
I've only recently found your channel and I appreciate all the information you provide! The longer format videos have been perfect to listen to during warmup/cooldown stretches. Best of luck! Hoping to order a pair of the tights as my race day kit.

I finally got my GFA for London marathon after trying for 7 yrs. On my last marathon I realised at 18 miles that hadn't done enough long runs at goal marathon pace for long enough deep enough into the long run. This block I'll aim to finish at least 3 long rums doing MP for the last 8 miles of a 20 mile run.

Been subscribed since last summer and have loved your videos. You're honest and show what ACTUALLY is important unlike all the runfluencers on instagram 👌
My biggest goals this year are a sub-20 5k (aiming for it by April), 3:10 marathon in September, and a sub-40 10k by the end of the year. Marathon is my priority though as that's what I'm working on long term.
To achieve this, I'm adapting and practicing my fueling strategy and will be building my mileage up a lot in the few months before the official block (levelling out for a few weeks to recover before the mileage starts building again)

Love the videos and inspiration!! Running my first marathon in April at London for cure Leukaemia in memory of my little sister who passed away in 2019 from Leukaemia!! Going to raise at least £2500! As for the running, working for Sub 4 hours for my first go!! Am slowly ramping up my weekly milage to 75km currently with a 17 mile long run. This week it includes 4x5km. I find progression runs are super helpful for longer runs! Have fallen in love with running for the mental aspects and it is something that I can do on my own... Have only played teams sports in my life. Also work from home so getting out is a big part of my day! After London, I would like to PB the 5km, 10km and half marathon too before the end of the year 😀 Again I love the channel and thank you for so much information!!

Key goals, sub 17 5k, sub 2:40 Mara.
Key changes- a) big speed block 12 to 15weeks, b) using a coach, c) attacking my interval sessions like a race but 9 out 10 effort, d) treating interval recoveries seriously and maximising them (teach bossy to recovery quickly)

    Hey Scully!
I'm a 3-time, 3:56 Marathon Runner and I'm looking to run sub 3:30 come late April.
This marathon training block I've committed to overall record base mileage and training block mileage. I've incorporated mile repeats and 'marathon race pace' runs in my weekly schedule, and I'm just looking for ways to get the absolute most out of my Long Runs without doing too much or too little - so I AUTO clicked this video.
Best of luck on your training,

    Hi Stephen,
I started running in June 2024 and entered my first 10k race in November, it’s been an amazing journey so far! I’m now training for the Hong Kong Half Marathon in 2025, with a big goal of running my first full marathon in 2026.
This year, I’m hoping to enter as many local races in Hong Kong as I can and maybe even take on the Bangkok Marathon in December. I run about 5 times a week and have been following tips from your videos, which have been a huge help. thank you!
Looking forward to seeing what I can achieve this year.
    Best wishes!

First of all: when you mentioned your dog in the video, I thought "We need to see his dog more! His dog should be at the end of every video." At 17:05, I got my wish. So thanks for that. (I had a golden retriever up until last summer and I loved him so much.)
My goal for 2025 is train for and run the NYC Marathon in 3:40, or at least faster than 3:45. I know this might seem ridiculously easy to a lot of people. I'm a 50 y.o. lady who ran my first marathon at 44 (in 4:00:xx) and ran my fastest marathon at 49 in 3:47:xx. Maybe not a huge improvement, maybe not super fast. For me, I'd be thrilled with anything faster than that this November.
For a middle-aged amateur, my mileage is decent (2200+ miles last year) but could be higher. Strength training is okay but could be more regular. Core could be better. I'd like to work on all of these things this year.
    AND MORE DOG, PLEASE.

I’m going to run my first ever marathon this year in Southampton after not even making it to the start line last year because I knew I wasn’t ready after many failed training runs that I cut short because I was angry I couldn’t hit my paces. The change I’ve made is The training leading up to this one instead of quitting a session because it wasn’t going well I just ran easier but got it done and surprise surprise I’m still getting better so that mythical consistency is going to get me to the start line! Aiming for a sub 4hour. Love your videos mate.

Serendipitous, am about to hit a 10 mile long run as I comment.
Saw the raffle; my 2025 goal is to run 1200 + miles. Last year was my first year running seriously and got to 855 miles by years end... because I was trying to find my rhythm - and had a couple bad months.
Goal besides the 1200 + mile total for the year is a sub 6:30 per mile 5k or even something like a 5:50 per mile for the 5k. Plan to make my long runs longer as well.

Hi there all the way from sunny South Africa. Finally built up the courage to enter and train for the Comrades Marathon (86kms), taking place 8 June 2025. Key elements taken into 2025 is watch my weight/efficient weight loss (binge eat often), which will help with shin splints and plantar fasciitis . This will ensure better recovery, become more consistent, log longer runs, then allowing for more progression. I'm an average runner, but it's the journey leading to Comrades and being able to accomplish the distance the race has in store

Hi, I’m glad to see your dog; he’s grown quite a bit since the last video I saw🐶! You picked a great name for him!
In 2025, I hope to stay injury-free and disciplined. I also aim to quit drinking alcohol entirely🤕. My first goal is to finish the Cluj Marathon on April 6th with a better time than I had last time, which means under 2 hours and 57 minutes. I’m currently in the third week of the training plan I got from you, and I’m trying to stick to it as best as I can.
I’m not a big fan of training in "super shoes" either, so I’ve decided to do both my interval sessions and long runs in regular running shoes. As for gels and hydration during training, I still need to work on that. Usually, I don’t consume anything during training because I see it as part of the preparation for ultramarathons (you never know when I’ll get the urge to sign up for another mountain ultra🫠).
However, starting with the long run in week 3, I’ll make hydration and fueling a priority.
    Great video!🐕Thanks!

My goal for this year is a first marathon with a goal time around 4h.
Achieving it: Been building a base aerobic fitness now since last spring. Having a training plan, not having any excuses stop me doing long runs. Told my wife that I have this goal that is important for me and there will be no plans that will go over my training. For example we went to her parents for weekend so I said ''Okay but I will be 2h late as I will run there'' it is about 18km distance. (might sound selfish but she is supporting me 100%)
Also checking my diet, sleep, and testing of nutrition and water intake during my long runs at the moment. ALSO learnt the hard way that I can also be too eager to train so I need to hold myself back to not injure myself.

Hi Stephen, my goals for this year as a 55 year old is to run two marathons with my chief aim to get under 3:10 this year or better yet 3:05. One in May and one in October. The things I have planned on changing this year is to run faster long runs up into the higher end of zone 2 & bottom of zone 3. I used to do all of my LSD in Zone 2 only. The other thing I'm doing this year is using your advice on training in a more structured way during long runs with similar examples in your video. Again, I have always just ran in zone 2. Old thinking I guess! Anyways, the training is going great so far and I feel stronger for it! Thanks for sharing all of your pro tips on your awesome channel. Peter from Toronto, Canada.

I just ran 22 miles for my 22nd birthday which was the longest I had ever done by about 6 miles! I’m in the buildup for my first marathon this March after I got back into running last year and did two half marathons. I’m hoping this year to be more consistent about running more days per week, because I too often find myself skipping days and making up the mileage later in the week, when it would be easier to distribute the mileage across more days. The big goal for 2025 is to run more than 100 miles each month, which is definitely an attainable number for me but will require more consistency than I had last year. Love the channel! I do a stretching routine I found here at least 3x per week because I’m so nervous about injuries!

    Running goals for 2025:
Marathon 2:34 > sub 2:30, stretch goal sub 2:27(to become the fastest man with no colon)
    5k 15:5x > sub 15:20
    How:
    - Up cadence: Currently racing around 160 training often 158, running with a metronome with the goal of getting nearer to 170.
    - Drop weight: BMI 23, for a runner I'm heavy, trying to drop bf by cutting empty calories out of diet.
    - More easy miles: I make most progress above 40mpw, but also get injured more often, so need to make easy runs easy.
    Goal races:
    - Focus marathon till London in April
    - Work on shorter distances and speed till October
    - Refocus to Valencia marathon in December

I agree with the super shoes and I’m going to try and not rely on them in my current London block. But I do think you need to use them a certain amount in training so you are used to them come race day.
Other things I want to change in this block; zero alcohol, better diet, better sleep, running to feel, and prioritising good sessions over just getting miles in for the sake of it.
Keep up the great work Scully 👍🏻

3:30 marathon in April. I'm 9 weeks into a 20 week plan and this time I am actually doing the strength work, stretching and foam rolling. Train like the person you want to be, not the person you are 💪

My goal for 2025 is to run a sub-2h45’, and I’ll give it a try at the end of April.
In my preparation, I’m including very short hill sprints that I wasn’t doing before, and I’m aiming to stay consistent with my gym sessions (at least 2 per week).
Your channel is amazing, and the content is always very interesting. In 2025, I find it even more organized into chapters and easier to follow!
    Thanks for sharing!

Thanks Scullion for all your advice. I’m running my second official marathon in LA on March 16th…my pace times have dropped consistently by a minute due to your advice and input on the running and leg exercises(I do both almost daily). My goal is to run 3:15 in 2025 but I’m not putting to my pressure on myself just looking to keep my heart rate steady and be able to push when I need to. Those shorts look great by the way! Would love to win a pair! Cheers! -Trevor

    Those tights look very nice!
    Goals for this year:
Gain indoor racing experience, hopefully get under 8:50 in the indoor 3k, and around 15:15 in the indoor 5k.
Break 9:20 in the 3k steeplechase outdoors, break 15 in the 5k outdoors
And for fall of 2025, I want to break 25 mins for 8k cross country
In order to do this, I plan to just keep consistent with higher volume than what I've done. I think I also need to just race more and get used to the discomfort that comes with the end of a race.

Great as always Stephen 🤝 My goal for 2025 is to get under 2.50 in the marathon and sub 16.30 in the 5k. I'll be aiming to get a long run in EVERY week. In the past I have not been consistent with this and think this definitely held me back!

Coming back to running having started a bit last year but stopped due to a broken foot.
Recovered now and progressing better than last year already!
    Goals: 25 min 5k (from 30m)
1h (or sub) 10k and to gradually build up my mileage every couple weeks.
I'm hoping these are achievable! Don't want to set anything ridiculous til I have a better feel for my ability.
All the best to everyone with their goals this year!

On these days, right at the beginning of the year...I've been thinking a lot about my goals for this year. As a triathlete I have goals not only for running but for swimming and biking, and running wise I'd say I'm going to break 35 min in the 10k.
In order to achieve this I will try to be more time efficient with my life in order to make more room for training.
Big thanks to you Scully for all the great content!!

Spring marathon for me in 2025, first time running London and can’t wait.
My goals are to be inside last years Manchester time of 3:09. I’ve been working really hard at decent recovery - sleep and nutrition!
    See you out there sometime

Discovered your channel somewhere Steve, and have found it a cracking place to learn and get inspired in your sport, even at the grand old age of 41.. leads me nicely to goals for 25. Wanted to run a 26.2 spring25 but I’m not confident about prep for a local event, so may wait to book an autumn 26.2 in Europe somewhere. But my very bottom line is to move constantly through 2025.

I've run about 10 marathons but have really struggled in the past few years to get decent training done. Life has just got in the way, I finished my degree and then got started in my career, and have been lucky enough to have started a great relationship. But another barrier has been my own rigid ideas about how training has to be. Thinking I need to do at least 45 mins Zone 2 any time I go out for an easier run, for example. Or thinking that I cant't run at all until my watch and headphones are charged. So my 2025 goal is to stop putting unnecessary barriers in my own way, and to just run no matter what. To realise that a 25 minute run with no Garmin is still a hell of a lot better than no run at all. Basically, not to let 'perfect' be the enemy of 'good'. Thanks for everything Scully!

Wise words as ever Stephen - thank you. As for 2025 goal, sub-3 for the first time before the half century hits in a few years 😂. Changes are more mileage (up to 70 miles at peak) which is about as much as life lets me, with 4.30am runs much of the week. Also to have long runs to involve progressively more work as it goes on - exactly why I clicked! Nothing new on race day is a must… too many variables going on so reducing what we can sounds reasonable 👊🏻

I am a runner from the Netherlands who also does some Cycling and Swimming.
My goals for this year are:
-Running the Amstelveen Marathon in 2:45 wich is in less than 2 months time.
-Getting PR's for all other running distances. (Just ran a 33:53 min 10k last week so already a good start.)
-Completing an Ironman faster than a budy of mine who is a really strong cyclist.
    -Staying consistent/not getting injured.
How i will achieve these goals:
-Take rest days/ do cross training when i feel my body needs it.
-Focus mostly on volume at easy and moderate intensity.
-After my marathon i will be running a bit less and do a bit more Cycling and Swimming to prepare for the Ironman.

I've signed up to my first marathon in April after a few years of consistent running and some shorter events. My goal is a sub 3:30, so If I manage to get that I will have achieved 2 goals for the year :)
I have really leaned into tougher sessions like you mentioned, with the mindset that the more discomfort I endure now, the better off I will be on race day.

Goal is running a new Marathon pb. I’m trying to shift long runs from easy run 130bpm. Actually I also use super shoes for long run right now. I want the long run to be as close to the marathon
feeling as possible. Not just mentally but also physically. I’m 45 years old and my main issue is getting the body ready for stress. I think there is a big difference between fatigue from running a long slow run and running a faster long run. One is mentally challenging the other is hard on the body. But what do I know 😂 Pb just under 3h
Had plenty of mistakes. Took an empty bottle with me, because I struggle with drinking from cups. Lost the bottle in the first 400 meters. So that was that plan.
Thanks for all the content. You can’t imagine how much it helped me in the last couple of months ❤

My story is probably different from most of your subscribers. I'm 69 YO, ran when I was younger, got injured and transitioned to endurance cycling, which I did relatively consistently for the last several decades. Finally decided last year, I wanted to run again.
My initial goals were 1.) to run injury free; 2.) Improve my odds of living longer & 3.) see how good I could be.
What I did differently was that I didn't "raw-dog" it..... I decided to get a real coach. Found a coach and started running June 1, 2024. As part of this I committed to Strength training & "Running from where I was", so we run a 5K TT every 4 weeks or so and set my threshold pace based on the results. All program paces are a % of that threshold pace. Trust the process, run consistently, and let the results be results.
So far, I've improved my 5K time from the High 31 minutes to the low 26 minutes, which as a 69 YO with 7 months of training, I feel good about.
Next goal is an April Half-Marathon under 2 hours. I just started week 1 of a 12 week build after a 7 week base build aimed at this goal. Second Goal is another Half-Marathon in October improving my time by 5 minutes.
Great videos Stephen, I appreciate your transparency as you share your experience.

Looking for a 3hr 30 min marathon in a few months. Just ran my first 20 minute 5k today! Was surprised how easy it ended up being. I've upped my miles per week from 30 miles per week to 40. I feel like I'm making pretty good progress. Ran a few 13 mile long runs already and looking for more. I've still got time to build up more miles. Having a blast doing it!

I agree with super shows ‘non negotiable’ comment with one caveat - they do enable a quicker recovery. If you’re fatigued in a big block - it’s better to get the long run done and recover enough for the next session than to not be able to complete it. However - in general I agree. Find that pain cave and embrace it - I’m quicker into the pain cave without super shoes!
