That was super informative from Kate and yourself Matt, one of the best breakdowns of strength training for runners I have seen in ages. It was made very simple to understand as some people over complicate it. I'm struggling with hamstring issues too, so this is very relevant for me and I can use those exercises in my routine.
Matt, one piece of advice is don’t do strength training in running shoes. If you do, I’d do them in a relatively lower stack, firm foam shoe but ideally just get some gym- specific leg day shoes or go socks only. Inov8 makes some good ones. Happy new year bud
Great stuff - love the emphasis on single leg movements. Also, as a former strength-based athlete, I agree with Kate that if people more fully understood just how hard it is and how much intention needs to be applied to put on even a kg of lean muscle mass, they wouldn't be as concerned about "accidentally" bulking up. I don't think anyone has ever said, "Oh my lord, where did all this muscle suddenly come from!?!?"
I was planning the ask all the questions about strength etc. during this marathon period via e - mail but Matt is faster than us like always :) and explaning Btw - after your ''Cam Levins - Gym Session & Biomechanics Analysis'' episode nothing is gonna be same like before :) Grateful to Swet Elite and big respect 👏🏾
Matt can you please video Clayton and Connor .. they have had huge success since US olympic qualifiers , top 10 olympics and great NYC marathon. We do enjoy the content about you but please don't lose the elite runners content. Thank you
Good one 👍 - plz keep coming more of sorts 😊 Btw always make me laughs when people say they "scared" of strength work in the gym because they dont want become to big - runners and non runners alike (for runners especially running away from upper body :) - even if you try very hard, you wont, to become big you will need to dedicate you life to it in the way similar runners dedication to running - and even more difficult to become big for runners - you first die of old age than noticably bulk up in size ... but your body composition will turn nicely from skinny fat runner to athletic runner 😊
Sorry if I missed this in a previous episode, but what's the rationale behind racing so frequently? I mostly ask because it seems like even the pros stick to about 2 marathons, maybe 3, over the course of the year
Hi Matt, thanks for the great video! I noticed you don't seem to focus much on training the quads. Is there a reason for that? Aren't the quads more important for running performance compared to the hamstrings?
They are important, we just focus on his key area for this phase being hamstrings and calves and also didn’t want to create excessive fatigue before Houston 😊 Kate
just do heavy deep barbell or belt squats and barbell RDLs with some calf and tibia movements. the research shows you want to train for strength so low reps and heavy weights, despite this personal trainers keep recommending waste of time exercises like glute ham raises/bridges, unweighted back extensions, single leg hamstring pulls etc. this is how to waste your time in the gym
Hi, Kate here! His sets and reps were lowered down to these ranges (just wasn’t shown in the video). We are also planning to progress into heavy even more but with Houston coming up we wanted to build towards it. We’ve made a whole video on why heavy strength is fantastic for runner and I actually completed my PhD showing exactly this!

Great tip, thank you
Good point. Nike metcon. Bare foot. Converse. Anything really.
Pick up a pair of Under Armour UA Reign 6 crosstraing shoes. They will do you very well.
Bang on
Rookie mistake

Just feel like trying something different is all. Done that ^ for 7 years. Keen to learn another way and if it’s possible to improve.

More Kate more Kate more Kate
Great stuff. Thanks for sharing your talk with Kate.
No foot strengthening exercises? I’d suggest incl. those and always train barefoot ! ;)
