I bought my eldest son one of those HST trains in the mid to late 70's for Christmas . Decided to check it late on Christmas Eve , I love the lights as it went forward , same in reverse . If the wife hadn't stopped me I'd have been there all night . Great days

Your intro about train spotters made me smile Charlie. Why did we get such a bad press ? At times like this I'm glad I stuck with my Triang P5 controller that i bought in 1955 and its never let me down. No chips, no sound and I dont need a degree in physics to run my trains. Of course the hobby must develop and some of your sounds are really good. I especially liked the 125 coming off the viaduct. Swindon ? Well I suppose they knew a bit there !

Informative and down to earth . I’m 60 now retired last year(lucky me). Only have a test track DCC but
I have 167 locos and 70 coaches plus wagons buildings scenery etc waiting to be used on the 28ft x 10ft Ickworth to Stonham Ave railway when it’s built(mk2 version) I have all track plan ready. I put the decoders in using lais one cheap and cheerful. I have crew added as I do this. My period is
BR 1954-64 so BR green/ black and experimental on diesels. Love this hobby as it stops me going nuts! Altho the obsession can revert that feeling! Cheers and stay safe.

I am always of the belief that if you can use a spreadsheet to help with something in your life you should.
Every hobby I have has various catalog spreadsheets to catalog my collection and like you what needs doing on that collection.

Nice to see part of your loco fleet in detail. My layout is also based on the Western Region in the early seventies. I am a huge diesel hydraulic fan due to the fact that I was raised in Swindon. I visited the BR railway work shops in the town on a regular basis to view the hydraulics being overhauled and repainted. Although I no longer live in Swindon due to work relocation, I am proud of my Swindon roots.

I have been building a Pirate board game for near on 100 years, or so it seems, I have always wanted a train layout but as life doesn't always give you what you want, your UA-cam posts have filled the void. That Class 37 looks and sounds very authentic, nice. These along with the Peaks and Deltics were grail loco's and we had to go to St Pancras and Kings Cross to see them. Thanks. :-)

Back when Royal Mail used to use trains We used to load mail bags into the old guard room on the 125. We had a special key to open the door.
I used to load 2nd class bags onto the parcel wagons, then go around to the other platform and collect mail from the 125's when they came in.

You know I enjoy your videos because I have told you so! I am also "sad" and have spread sheets of my locos. Interesting to compare the column headings. I like your idea of making them dynamic and helping to readily identify jobs to be done. I have just added a couple of columns which I find useful. First is a picture of the loco; obviously only appears as a thumbnail but I find it helpful. Second is a record of the principal CVs. For non sound locos I just record CVs 1-6. This came about because one reliable loco suddenly became a really poor runner and I found the starting CV had somehow reset itself to max. Resetting it to 6 brought it back to normal. But it made me realise how useful it would be to have this vital info recorded on the spreadsheet. Keep up the good work.

Hi I am from Sri Lanka. I have enjoyed watching your locos and also your commentary. I hvae many boxed hornby, lima and fleischmaan locos and rolloing stock woth a good inventory of nickel silver tracks. Time has been such a constraint, professionally and now with the COVID- 19 taking us all round the bend. Watching and listening to you tonght, has given me some inspirational strength to pick up some courage and take them all out. Sadly, owing to moving houses many times, and job related commitments, I have never been able to have a fixed layout. I dont have a single sound fitted locomotive and will hope that i could start on it , though rather late. I am going to be 71 in July. So lets see if i have the BHP to start. LOL. Hi Charlie, great video this week. If I recall the 9F Black Prince is on the North Norfolk railway after it was sold a few years back by David Sheppard. Of course used to be on the East Somerset line. Thenloco you're thinking of that he sold to North Yorkshire was Green Knight. We've had the Evening Star down on the West Somerset line and I had heard it had been modified to run on the mainline. Having said that, last time it came down was on the back of a truck.

I am originally from Crewe & travelled by train to school from Crewe every day (steam then BRCW Class 104 DMU's from 1957). I saw the Crewe built Class 52's regularly in their undercoat paint with their running numbers chalked on the cab sides. They were usually going on test runs on the Crewe-Shrewsbury line & the same applied to the Crewe built Class 47's. I still have my Ian Allan Summer 1961 Combined Volume suitably underlined with locos spotted plus the new Class 52's/47's added manually on the rear blank page. Amazing how time passes so quickly! Thanks for another great video. Like you I also loved the Class 52's & it was great seeing them emerge from Crewe Works in their final paint colours of Sand, Maroon & Green. Happy days :-)

that class 37 sound was spot on , when in school we used to 'mooch off' down to the track near Llantarnam school and put washers on the track for the coal and steel trains to squash. great fun then but we never noticed the danger side of it. atb

It was great to see your stock running Charlie and hearing the different sounds from the various decoders and speaker units. Your track work on the curves looked very nice as the HST125 drove through them. You could see the engines and coaches tilt slightly due to your little shims under the outer rails, that added a lovely touch of realism to them. I look forward to seeing Chadwick's fleet growing and the rest of the layout build.

Your class 37 brings back recent memories of my time on my railways class 37 254 which I was a driver's assistant on, love that roar it makes and was lovely with my side window open on hot summer's day .listening to that sound the class made .a brilliant video .

Hi Charlie, great video as per usual. My layout is a anologue steam one and what I've done is fit a steam sound module from Train-Tech, one in a rake of Pullmans, one in a goods wagon. Clever things, they are motion activated and whatever loco goes on the front, you essentially get a steam train. Yes the modules have their limitations and I'd say NOT as as good as chips etc but not a bad anologue alternative. Thanks and take care Charlie, regards Terry.

Loved the Video.
Can relate to the SABLE reference. We get sucked in by going to large with our modelling and wanting the best for our layouts and sites. Need to be more circumspect with our desires. I have 30 plus locos because I love the mechanics of them with decoders but live in a unit that doesn't have enough space for a layout. So I collect and store and run them on a programming track.
Keep up the good work.
I just hope that one day you will the opertunity to build that Layout Russell.
I must admit (though probably not to you Charlie) that until the 125s came along I hadn't really noticed what sort of engine pulled the trains I had traveled on until then. Perhaps it was because I grew up in London and we rather took the Tube for granted? Anyhow they looked so good and so modern and got us down to Bath Spa, and later Chipp'nham, so easily and so comfortably that I really noticed them. I was also impressed by the 225s that took us up to York, easily the most comfortable trains I have traveled on - and they had edible meals in the buffet. God alone knows what old rubbish was pulling me into Victoria and London Bridge from Lewisham, later, when I was commuting, but they usually worked, pulling the old 'slam-door' compartment carriages! Now I just do the occasional trip into London on the Chiltern line, and I must admit I have started noticing the engines in recent months, or had until…

As we are in stage 4 lockdown here in Melbourne and basically can't go out of the house, I've been catching up on old videos.
I can't believe I have more Locos than you! Most of them are decades old and not really suited to my main area of interest and I'm actually selling
them off slowly to help fund newer more suitable ones.
Luckily I haven't really been bitten by the sound bug, I only have 1 ESU diesel and 3 TTS steam locos but with iPhone speakers instead of the standard ones.

I agree with the over buying of stuff, I use to have twenty locomotives and reduced them down to ten. I use to buy trains just because they were a bargain but decided to sell and keep the ones that mean something to me including the two recent anniversary gift locos. I have two Hornby locos that are 50 years old which still run and look good. If the others last that long or more it's about 500 years worth of play. Lol. I do appreciate a good model loco collection though. Andrew

This may not be everyone's idea of interesting and informative but I think it was spot on (as usual). It was also good to hear about you Charlie, your background and what got you started in the hobby which is normally overlooked in many cases. Therefore, we get to hear about the man behind the layout, as well as seeing his handywork.
I love spreadsheets too and whilst I cannot claim to know everything about them, what they can do is superb when it comes to the sort of detail you need regarding your locos.

Charlie - I completely agree with you about Digital Sound having transformed the Hobby. I'm lucky to have two layouts, one a tail chaser and the other a small terminus station. I love watching the trains run by (with a glass of wine as I get older!) but the terminus station also comes into its own with sound locos idling in the sidings. I have a Dapol Western which I think is a great model, though my favourite locos, after the Deltics of my early years, are the Class 50s of my holidays in Cornwall and especially Penzance. Great video - I share so many similar experiences with you. All the best. I'm glad you have trains running at last!

Tools: You forgot your brilliant wire strippers - RS Components 382-2847 (although i suppose you can't buy them on Amazon). For snips I like the Knipex 78 03 125. Super sharp, and nice and small. They are available from Amazon.

Thanks for the video Charlie. I had Hornby 0 gauge clockwork but my first 00 was the Tri-Ang 0-4-0 running under the name of Nellie. When Kitmaster engines and coaches came out I built a number and then I was hooked. I come from Malmesbury, only a few miles away and although I worked in Swindon in the 1970s. My favourite diesels are probable the Class 20s, Class 33s and Hymechs although I was wowed by the Western class when they first came out. I never liked the Warship class, and when on a trip round Swindon works, we were hurried through the shop containing at least 5 Warships all black with smoke where they had caught fire.

Dont know how I missed this video Charlie - v interesting. Your comments on the sound decoders reminds me of up to about 3 years ago when you could go direct to LSB (ESU) and Paul Chetter (Zimo) and get your sound decoders reblown for about £10 plus postage. Then they both signed up with various retailers (likely as they couldn't handle the workload) and the prices shot up to about £25 as they wanted their cut. Paul Chetter was always v helpful; it was his articles in Model Rail that gave me the inspiration to upgrade some of my legacy locos. The Hornby Class 40 was one of his early projects so having 2x Lima locos (D210 and D233 Empress of England both in full green), plus a load of WM and PE detailing kits from toyfair acquisitions in the 90s, I gave it a go. By coincidence, Hornby had just issued their Railroad BR Blue Class 40s (ex-Lima mouldings IIRC) for £34.50 (!), and the chassis (better motors and DCC Ready) were direct replacements into the Lima bodies. So all kitted up with Zimo MX645Rs, Sugar Cube speaker and fully detailed, they are now well cherished in my fleet amongst other sound locos at twice the price. Happy days and apologies for the ramble ;-) PS agree on the spreadsheet, started mine in 1995 and has saved me a fortune over the years...
A fascinating comment mate. Yes sound decoders and the files, have come a long way but sadly the providers profit margins seem to have increased disproportionately!
Hi Charlie , I love watching your films , I've always liked model railways and just recently I got the bug again but when I mentioned it to the Wife she said I could have a pair of cats , Love the cats, though they put fur all over the house and its get on my records ( another interest ) ,

Essential tools: DCC concepts High Quality Power Bus Strippers (DCT-BWS). RRP Approx £25. I got mine from Peter’s Spares Model Railway for much less. Just a brilliant and versatile tool, making any wiring prep a piece of cake.

I have a class 142 that refused to travel anti clockwise without derailing on the first corner.
After researching online i decided to strip my track clean and Re lay it ballast and all. Only to find the problem was a the coupling( timely mistake there)
I think the hobby is about the little problems you get to overcome.
Some hobby sights often paint a false no issues if you are experienced persona.

I am in my 20s and found it off putting when hunting for class 142s - being sniffed at and told to purchase other more reliable/ more prestigious models.
I kindly persisted and now have 4 class 142s as I used to travel on them daily and they fit into my 90s era. I love watching them tootle about.
A bit of pick up adjustment and fitted them to DCC and they work perfectly . (That class also known for it’s uncomfortable quirk)
I sadly avoid railway magazines as they tend to only feature layouts they seem to be prototypical of certain eras.
I am a stickler for realism myself and my layout is based on 90s North Yorkshire.
I did however add Stonehenge last week to celebrate solstice.
I have drafted up an article to stomp modelling snobbery, I have named it ‘ never mind the buffers, here is henge in Yorkshire’ it will be in the post to all major railway magazines soon.

P.s do you know where I could get hold of a class 142 sound chips without re mortgaging the house?
