"Not responding" does not mean the program has frozen; it means the window is not responding to window messages. It's probably still installing when you're killing the process. It's just using the UI thread as part of the install process for some reason. Bad design, but not necessarily frozen. Try leaving it for an hour plus, depending on the specs of the system.
It's pretty likely that the program is frozen. Though I didn't say that "not responding" always means that a program is frozen, I'm just talking about the service pack in this instance. I left the installer running in a VM while doing other work for a while, and it never recovered from that state.
@@MichaelMJD I wasn't sure how long you'd left it so I wanted to check. Because it's possible it's just a bad installer which would not unfreeze the window until it finished, and the operation looked like it might be lengthy so unless you'd left it a fair amount of time there was no way to be sure. Given it happened both inside and outside of a VM, it looks like it must be normal for it to not respond at that step.
@@jozef97 Yeah it's certainly possible though I've had it running in another VM for the past hour and still, it hasn't recovered. I wonder if its just this version of the service pack. I'll have to see if one of the older versions works.

0:32 - not being able to log on to NAS: something to do with SMB v1 being deprecated for security problems? For example, for Windows 10 you have to deliberately force-install SMB v1 support if you want Windows 10 to support it (and you're warned basically it's not secure).
I would have literally waited a couple hours before calling it dead. Some of the tasks that get done in these updates make it look like the task has stopped responding even though it's still working.
I saw some discussion a while back (most likely November last year actually) with the creator and some other users who were talking about how the creator puts a lot of effort into making the unofficial service pack but people were just downloading it for free and rarely donate to him. He felt that it wasn't rewarding enough after all this time, which was the reason he made 3.66 not available to the public but only to him and a couple of loyal friends. My guess is that he changed his mind in March this year and released it to the public anyway.
No, it’s not. It’s a garbage installer written by someone who has no freaking clue how to do anything that interfaces with a user. It may be the best we have, but it’s crap.

I had to laugh hard when you were talking to your PC: "You can do it!", it was the same with me and my Cousin... Talking to the PC not to crash in some Situations or to beg the Modem to download a File a little faster.
This is coincidental timing. I tried 98 service pack 3.66 last week. I also had issues, and was pretty unhappy with it. I ended up doing a fresh Windows 98 SE install, and just working with that.
Actually, for some reason on a buttnaked Windows 98SE system without this Unofficial Service Pack, 1GB seemed to do fine. It didn't seem to limit anything under physical hardware. Even under virtual machines. Virtual Machines tend to go higher without killing the machine itself. About 1153MB or something like that. Though, nowadays, I believe we can get 4GB with a patch that we use to pay for back in the day. But since the dev passed away, their family made it free to us. Sourced from PhilsComputerLabs.
Maybe there's a conflict with the anti-virus that's installed on your computer? Or you need to install IE 5.5 or IE6 first? If not, then I have no idea why it's not working...
I think you're right about IE6. When I was grabbing the SP3 files for my own 98SE box, it *explicitly* mentioned that you MUST install IE6 first or things are going to go very, very south.
I've just gone through the routine of installing Windows 98SE and USP3 on my Slot A Athlon this week! One thing I discovered was that when installers ask you to reboot on Win 98, you -need- to reboot or things get odd, and permanently odd if you keep working after it asks for a reboot. Plus, it's W9X, it always needs a reinstall!
The whole feel might seem one of almost complete failure, but hey, the Active Directory patch Michael needed to access the NAS was successfully installed! No small thing at all!
The unofficial service pack has been going for at least a decade and I suspect it's used by a large percentage of users. The package has a lot of useful features and saves a mass of time searching for things one by one, (even if you knew about all of them.) There appears to be an issue with this specific version but generally an unmissable DL.
I still have a Quantum Fireball lct10 10.2GB. noisy as hell but it works flawlessly to this day. tested a few weeks ago with an USB-PATA adapter after sitting idle for years. dayum that late 90s tech was another level.
When i read the title i just know your going to run into that bug everyone does where the folder browsing gets super messed up and the entire html engine breaks. The trick is installing it twice, but i just moved away from the update pack since i found it to unstable. It does come with the best USB 2.0 driver ever made for 98 though, so definately dig up U98SEUSB.exe inside their sp3.cab it works without the SP3 installed to.
Damn, I thought it was just me. I did install the stuff twice and it fixed itself in the end. Definitely keep the U98SP3 installer in the desktop folder.
I just played around a little with Windows 98 SE in VMware after seeing this. I've installed previous versions of this SP without issue but sure enough, I did a clean install of 98 SE, installed VMware Tools and IE6, then tried to install version 3.66 and experienced the exact same issue as in this video. Out of curiosity, I tried to install version 3.64 (which I had saved) and this installed fine. I then tried 3.66 on top of 3.64 and it worked OK then. I'd guess that the Outlook Express install failed because you're still using Internet Explorer 5. I'd be surprised if Outlook Express 6 didn't need IE 6.
What’s going on with the SP3 is one one of the RUNDLL instances it invokes freezes. If you download an old version of Process Explorer from Sysinternals, you can see that. Just kill the frozen RUNDLL instance and the install will proceed normally. BTW, if you can get it to work, 98 SP3 installs DX9
Just noticed this while poking around on the website for USP3 - "Core options are for users ONLY, who will not be using Internet Explorer IF YOU USE INTERNET EXPLORER, DO NOT INSTALL ANY OF THE CORE OPTIONS OR YOU WILL HAVE PROBLEMS." Might have something to do with it? You're not _using_ it but it is installed.
I wonder if that has something to do with 98lite. It's interesting because the steps in the help document say to install IE before installing the Main Updates, which would lead one to think that it is required. Plus, Windows 98 came bundled with IE anyways.
The thing is, if you install SP3 on real hardware besides the winoldap which I can kill with a command everything works. All of the scripts and batch files, inf files etc... will have to be tailored specifically for each VM. That's a lot of work. I would need to have 3 versions unless everyone uses the same VM, which I highly doubt. Now I understand why so many people have issues at vogon, everyone is using different VMs and getting different results. Thank you dtm2138 for bringing this flaw to my attention.
I'm surprised you ran into so many issues with SP3. I was able to install this on an IBM X23 laptop without any issue. Still super fun to watch, regardless!
Hey there. I agree with some of the comments that 3.64 has been more stable for me. That said, it looks like Norton Antivirus 2000 was installed and running. I remember back then that you often had to disable antivirus software before installing software, especially games and system updates. My bet would be that disabling that would result in better installation results.
If you're wondering they call it Windows 98 first edition is Service Pack 1, Windows 98 second edition is Service Pack 2 and, unofficial Windows 98 is Service Pack 3.
Did everything really go wrong... or did it work just as well as it originally did????? REALLY ENJOYED watching this, especially with someone else having all the anxiety, and not myself for a change!!!!
Sorry, I had to chuckle a little bit when you installed another browser just to download/install DirectX 9.0c when the SP3 installer has DirectX 9.0c as one of the options ;). That said, I see you also have Norton AntiVirus 2000 installed as well as Adobe Acrobat Reader (just based on desktop icons). Are you using some sort of Gateway Win98 restore CD that has all this stuff already? or using Win98 SE media and installing cleanly, but manually installing Norton AV? If the former, don't. And try it again.
For me, I have the best results installing the unofficial packs after a fresh 98 install. Tends too work a lot better and I haven’t had a failure at all when it comes with installing it, and I’ve been using it since the 2.5 pack days
I know this is a bit late but I think I know what your issue is. You have Norton installed and probably a very out of date one which may treat the installer as a pup cause it's not official. I've done the usp3 on many 98 pcs with no issue before but none of them had anti virus on them. Just a after thought
MJD, for my win98 setup I have a tiny ftp server on my main pc, I put everything there. then access ftp from win98 it's natively supported by windows explorer (and IE but windows explorer is easier on the eyes). it's a perfect way to get things without burning CDs and also I don't need to load the hard rive with big files I only get them over Lan ftp when I need them.
All version 3.0 of this Unofficial Service Pack has always caused me problems, such as wrong translations of applications or blue screens for no apparent reason. The best version of all (at least for me) is 2.0, it may not have everything it has, but it is a million times more stable, and it brings improvements that Win98 never imagined, try using it Michael, or else test the first 3.0, maybe you’ll have better luck
I think the issues with rhe Unofficial Service Pack 3 you had were not that bad. My experience with it is that it installs (but that was probablt a few versions old) but everytime I'm done with the main system updates after a reboot is instant BSOD before the boot screen.
Here's how a I got the Windows 98 SE Unofficial SP3 to work smoothly on my end. First make sure that Plus! 98 is not installed, you'll need to install IE6 SP1 first before running the unofficial SP3 installer. Also make sure you disable any Anti-Virus program that's running in the background when the installer comes up once you install Main Updates/Important and other useful tools from installer, don't install the Windows 2000/Me color scheme because it will freeze on you. After the reboot then you'll need to run the Windows 98 Setup from the Windows 98 CD to fix the icon shell because the Recycle Bin icon has a glitch after running the Windows 98 then you can install Plus! 98.
Oh, fun, gotta try this. But for the record, 512mb is a limit only on some hardware. My Tyan mainboards with 1GB RAM ran unpatched Win98 just fine, but they had 4 RAM slots which makes a difference. (3 slot systems usually can't do 1GB with Win98, something to do with the interleaving IIRC.)

AFAIK somewhen earlier I had a problem similar to yours which was solved by killing SPSTART from the Task Manager.
0:32 - not being able to log on to NAS: something to do with SMB v1 being deprecated for security problems? For example, for Windows 10 you have to deliberately force-install SMB v1 support if you want Windows 10 to support it (and you're warned basically it's not secure).
and on the server side, you have to enable it. i use truenas which has a feature to enable smb1 shares as well as smb3/4
I would have literally waited a couple hours before calling it dead. Some of the tasks that get done in these updates make it look like the task has stopped responding even though it's still working.
In another comment it looked like he had though
"Hopefully this is still entertaining for you." Oh don't worry, it is, very much so.
I came for the bits, I stayed for the errs :-)
This is so nostalgic. Reminds me of middle school and high school.
Thanks to all of the people who have supported SP3 for the last 10 yrs. Its a great pack if you read and follow instructions.
No, it’s not. It’s a garbage installer written by someone who has no freaking clue how to do anything that interfaces with a user. It may be the best we have, but it’s crap.
@@christodd3361 xd
@@christodd3361 if it's so garbage try doing something yourself instead of crying
He actually followed the instructions.
@jeeper plays I've been laughing at this comment for the past 5 minutes.. It's just funny to me for some reason
I love when he is doing the voice over then it switches to the camera's microphone. It really makes these video's seem more relatable and more interesting.
New subscriber here I really love these videos I think it's really awesome that people go out there and spend lots of time and effort making stuff like this for these old operating systems it's really cool could you make one or two videos about Windows 7 and unofficial support that would be really cool man your videos are pretty awesome and really well made you have a good voice and you know what you're talking about
I had to laugh hard when you were talking to your PC: "You can do it!", it was the same with me and my Cousin...
I dont think this works properly anymore, I had problems installing it on an old packard bell recently.
Just a heads up, you can use a decompression tool like 7zip or winrar to manually decompress the U98SESP3 into a dicrectory of your choosing.
The Netscape suite HTML editor was Netscape Composer.
I don‘t know why but your Voice has a strong Microsoft Sam vibe to it
The whole feel might seem one of almost complete failure, but hey, the Active Directory patch Michael needed to access the NAS was successfully installed! No small thing at all!
When everything goes so wrong even the mic decides to die for a few seconds
27:11
For a split second you could see an error.
The error said:❌INF install failure. Reason: The INF file was not found
[OK]
Then it shut down.
11:42 Yeah i didn't do it right the first time xD. That comment was actually more than a year ago.
In the frozen land of Nador, Michael MJD acquired a directx-9.0c executable ... and there was much rejoicing. #yaaay!
I love windows 98 videos.
2021 has been a whole lot of but Everything Goes Wrong… so watching you fumble with this should be entertaining.
Just noticed this while poking around on the website for USP3 - "Core options are for users ONLY, who will not be using Internet Explorer
IF YOU USE INTERNET EXPLORER, DO NOT INSTALL ANY OF THE CORE OPTIONS OR YOU WILL HAVE PROBLEMS."
Might have something to do with it? You're not _using_ it but it is installed.
I wonder if that has something to do with 98lite. It's interesting because the steps in the help document say to install IE before installing the Main Updates, which would lead one to think that it is required. Plus, Windows 98 came bundled with IE anyways.
MJD drinking game:
Every time something goes wrong, take a shot.
DISCLAIMER: Please don't die.
*takes one shot at the beginning of the video, then never again*
It never stopped going wrong
Try using a vanilla win98se disk, not a recovery one. Also install the official update that installs ie6 and outlook express 6. Then try that SP3
Awesome video, Michael!
Yep, had the same exact issue
That 98 download speed, younger me would be so envious!
the subscriber battle between michael mjd and enderman continues
I'm surprised you ran into so many issues with SP3. I was able to install this on an IBM X23 laptop without any issue. Still super fun to watch, regardless!
Hey there. I agree with some of the comments that 3.64 has been more stable for me. That said, it looks like Norton Antivirus 2000 was installed and running. I remember back then that you often had to disable antivirus software before installing software, especially games and system updates. My bet would be that disabling that would result in better installation results.
Hey MJD, sorry I was a little late to the party, keep up the good work!
If you're wondering they call it Windows 98 first edition is Service Pack 1, Windows 98 second edition is Service Pack 2 and, unofficial Windows 98 is Service Pack 3.
Michael MJD: Michael Making Junk Defective lol
I'm just kidding. I love these experiment videos.
Did everything really go wrong... or did it work just as well as it originally did????? REALLY ENJOYED watching this, especially with someone else having all the anxiety, and not myself for a change!!!!
I keep on trying to find the service packs for all the old versions of Windows. If there any sites that have them?
Nice video keep up the great work!
This video brings me back to my youth days, when I had a neighbour come over every single week to reinstall my Windows 98 =))))))))))
That probably explains why it’s a completely separate SP that isn’t related to the other 2 SPs.
I think the issues with rhe Unofficial Service Pack 3 you had were not that bad. My experience with it is that it installs (but that was probablt a few versions old) but everytime I'm done with the main system updates after a reboot is instant BSOD before the boot screen.
It has been little while since you did a Win98 video. Have you thought about a Win98 video with the RLoew patches?
Michael MJD: Everything Goes Wrong
Me: i raise you duraga1
Petition for the entire world to write all legal documents using Comic Sans from now on.
It wouldn't be a Michael Mjd video without something going wrong. :)
Why not try downloading one of the earlier versions & see if the service pack from them works ?
Hopefully that PC is still good! :)
I definitely would've disconnected the NAS when running that. Any issues were always disk access related
I used to have almost that exact Gateway tower as a kid, I still remember the specs mine had. Also this video reminds me of a Druaga1 video but with less SSDs
You know shit's about to go sideways when the warning is written in comic sans.
