I have been a huge Allan Holdsworth fan since the early 70s and still vividly remember seeing Jakko on the James Whale show and wondering who this Holdsworth inspired guitar moster was! Jakko had balls of steel taking over from two true greats Allan, and the incredible and sadly missed Alan Murphy. AM was the perfect blend of AH's fusion virtuosity and an accessible pop sensiblity - his playing on the first Go West album is breath taking! I am sure Jakko's relaxed personality equipped him well to take on the role, and he has gone on to become the truly great prog and fusion innovator he is. But it is evident, beyond his incredible guitar skills, he is a fully rounded musician, being a composer, arranger and driving force within progressive music. Great interview by a great musician.
I've seen Jakko live with KC, right in the front row. His performance was nothing short of phenomenal, from his voice (which is an unusual but welcome fit for many KC songs) to his super skilled playing.
I used to hear Epitaph as a kid on cassette tape late at night and it would capture me, although i didn't speak English at the time, it layed a burden at me, as if i knew it was a phenomenal song filled with sacred meanings
That was such a great interview. I've seen Jakko all the way back from the 80's with Rapid Eye Movement, and later with Schizoid Band and again with Crimson in 2015, and have tickets for the Albert hall gig in June. Brilliant to hear so many stories from these eras, thanks for this !
That was an amazingly entertaining interview. Jakko has just stepped into the the "legend" category by sharing his career, wisdom, amazing anecdotes and humour with us all. Plus anyone that can mention Soft Machine, Hatfield and the North and Henry Cow in the same interview is a star in my eyes. Well done Captain .... we need more like this.
I'm really glad Jakko landed the Crimson gig. His AH anecdotes are fantastic. I saw him at the Band on the Wall in Manchester at the end of the 70's with a band of London jazz alumni. He was cheerful warming his hands on a cup of tea. Not as dour then. Great interview Captain.
I had the pleasure of meeting Jakko last year, in a hotel bar. We chatted for a bit in the hotel lobby - he’s a charming chap and such a refreshing musician 👌
I know I want this guitar but after seeing Jakko's original it sort of pales in comparison. Then again it's only $780 so not bad. The pickups in the one in the video seem upgraded from what is for sale.
Lovey guy, who has been very lucky - playing on stage with his teen idol, AND getting paid to do it! Crimson are the best band in the world, and they are better now in 2019 than ever before.
I did the same thing here that I did with the Ed O'Brien vid on TPS a couple of weeks ago, I'll give it a few minutes to confirm that I really don't need to watch it.........and like Ed, Jakko is genuinely one of the most interesting, funny, humble guys in the industry. Great video, great guy, great player.
Such an awesome story , tremendous success indeed playing with such an iconic band. Jakko is as generous and kind in his honesty sounds like a major book in his future, what a career he has had and is having. Thanks Andertons for this wonderful series of Captain Meets.... please keep them comming.
Cap, I just can't thank you enough. That was another fantastic interview. No other place has an in depth "get to know you" series such as this one, and even if it's someone I've never before heard of, they're absolutely fascinating. Keep up the good work folks. I'm off to listen to some King Crimson.
Started listening to Crimson WAY back in the day when they were new. Have enjoyed their take on music. Saying that, this is absolutely the best interview ever done. Loads of info, and such an insight into how the industry really works. Yeah, Andertons and Jakko :) :) Will buy Jakko music properly :)
I'll be honest, I haven't been watching Anderton's like I used to. I dunno, maybe it's just a lull in my desire to watch guitar reviews and stuff like that... ...but seeing literally anything King Crimson-related on this channel is enough to make me pay attention.
Had the pleasure of seeing King Crimson twice this week; first night with my 60 year old boss who saw them a few times in the 70s, and the second time with my 18 year old son. Verdict? F*&%ing brilliant! Yes it is muso stuff, but the level of musicianship is breathtaking. Oh, and the 3 drummers thing is wonderfully bonkers and really works. I would urge anybody that is a true music fan to see them if they get a chance.
Lee has to be one of the most honest and ecstatic interviewers I've ever seen! Really great and relaxed guest to have on the show! Awesome work indeed guys!
Great interview thanks! I saw KC at the Roxy on the Sunset Strip a couple of times, by the end of the show I had to check to see the place still had walls standing! LOL I also Fripp at Madame Wongs in downtown LA with his Frippertronic setup, too cool for words.
disarmingly honest. great stories, both humble and droll. a national treasure. and kudos to the Captain. a smart & aware interviewer, letting it all unspool without any "interviewer hijack" at all.
Great interview. I had no idea that Jakko's career had been so varied. To be honest you could do another couple of hours just on his KC work. p.s. If Lee sees this he really needs to hear Chicago Transit Authority because he seemed to draw a blank at the mention of Terry Kath.
I passed him on the street when both of our bands were in Montreal (One band obviously being much larger than the other) and I did a double take. We made eye contact, and I feel that we both knew why. I looked it up later, and the whole band were having a day off in Montreal. I still kick myself for not turning around and trying to meet him. KC have been one of my favorite bands for almost 10 years now
Excellent Lee. Jakko is brilliant in KC - listen to Live in Vienna. You should try to get Andy Latimer from Camel on. Saw them in Manchester last October - he's a tone monster!!
This guy was able to play with Mark King Mick Karn Hackett Chris deburgh steven Wilson Danny Thompson Cliff Richard & Crimson?!? I think he is the only person who can read off that resume . Going to have to check out his catalog. Who else can say he played with the gods of fusion dance pop (level 42) & gods of art rock (crimson), gods of art post punk (karn barbieri )(& a god of progressive folk (Danny Thompson) & the god of modern progressive rock mastermind & audio engineer wizard : Steven Wilson ? No one has that resume of the following names, folks. It is just enough he became a honorary member of crimson. He named 5 people or groups that are my musical heroes. 🤯🤯🤯🤯Have to check out this man’s work. 😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳
Yeah what you said...amazing ability to bridge the genre world's of ELP and Thomas Dolby! BTW he was in neither bands just comparing the difference...prowess to the max.

Yes, and Jakko naturally fits in today's Crimson. Only person who can sing old Crimson's songs. Thanks god for his singing potential
I remember listening to The Court at about 11 from then I saw them since the Discipline tour and others always progressive experiment and observation. Great SE (the cover artist died after it was created in 69 -wow) hope it's available in USA soon.
Saw them live in Vienna last summer and it was the greatest concert experience I've ever had. It's funny in retrospect to hear that Jakko's first album was "In the Wake of Poseidon" because the set began with "Pictues of a City". It was kinda disappointing after the fact that they changed the vocal parts for the Belew stuff and didn't play "21st Century Schizoid Man" but didn't really care during the performance, I was just hooked throughout the entire thing starting with hearing Robert Fripp announcing "Welcome to a hot date with King Crimson!" before they went on stage.
Great interview, sweet Jam. I can sympathize with Jakko's comments on streaming, but I think they really do help to introduce people to new music, even this video did that for me, I was so intrigued by the jam I went to the "Burning shed" and found a couple of his albums, but there wasn't a hint of a sample, so how do I know what I am spending on? I mean, it could be awesome like the jam, or it could be too bizarre for words, am I supposed to take a punt? I would hazard a guess that a try before you buy strategy is likely to generate more sales than a spend and hope one.
When they talk about the age of the current KC fan base around the 1 hr mark, Jakko mentions that for example, at the shows that KC did in italy, the fans were really all ages and he was quite astonished that there were a lot of women in the crowds. I would just like to add, as a woman, that I prefer intelligent music over say ....an 80's hair band, pop music, etc., so I've always been drawn to the progressive rock music, if you will, as it fills all of my senses. I really have to listen and think about what is being created and it's much more fulfilling. I have noticed too, on several of the social media platforms, that there is a wealth of younger fans in South America, Italy, Japan, like Jakko said, in countries outside of the UK, as the UK tends to harbor the older fans that have been with KC from the beginning. No pun intended, Greg. And WOW, just wow on that track you played there at the end.
Wow! Been there done that. In the 70's I eas in a Prog rock band Tallis doing the West end thing. But it all went south when punk broke. Still at it writing with a bass player with a tenor sax Billie Holiday background. Writing accessible tunes but with an early Crimson vibe. Lots of heavy guitar going thru my Plexi.
So wait, honest question for Lee. You seemed to pause when Jakko mentioned Terry Kath (of Chicago). Are you not aware of who Terry Kath is/was? If not, check out the documentary on his life and his daughter's search for his Telecaster.
Pre-ordered mine in the US since early February. Can't hardly wait. I hope it is here by summer. Edit: I didn't know he was involved in that Jack Russell commercial 😂

That would be amazing

Epitaph is one of the greatest pieces of music ever written
Absolutely agree! I've thought so since 1969!!!!
Love the whole album, but Epitaph has always been my favorite song from it.
Yes, but for me it's number 2. Number 1 is Starless. The best prog title of all times.
But I fear tomorrow I'll be crying ,...
Epitaph and Starless are both beautiful masterpieces
King Crimson live is a life changing event.
Saw Jakko play with L42 in 91 and 94 - in my opinion he was the best guitarist the band ever had - such a unique and brilliant sound. Awesome!
Jakko is such a delightfully unassuming and _pleasant_ interview subject! I could have listened to him tell stories all day.
Andertons - the PBS of music.
I have been a huge Allan Holdsworth fan since the early 70s and still vividly remember seeing Jakko on the James Whale show and wondering who this Holdsworth inspired guitar moster was! This was wonderful, and Tony Levin really is a great person.
I've seen Jakko live with KC, right in the front row. His performance was nothing short of phenomenal, from his voice (which is an unusual but welcome fit for many KC songs) to his super skilled playing.
Back in 1991, I had the chance to meet Jakko after one Level 42 gig in Paris. He's a true gentleman !
I am a 63 year old ( hippie) its so good to hear jakko talk, about al these great bands, man i like this. THNX-Peace
I used to hear Epitaph as a kid on cassette tape late at night and it would capture me, although i didn't speak English at the time, it layed a burden at me, as if i knew it was a phenomenal song filled with sacred meanings
Imagine seeing your future band live in the early 70's and it's King Crimson for God's sake.
Only living person who naturally fits in King Crimson, who can successfully sing both, Lake and Wetton's parts. A real King
Maybe. I don't care for how he sounds on the songs Belew sang.
Belew's work would be difficult to interpret...JJ Brit...Belew from Kentucky...great comments
That was such a great interview. I've seen Jakko all the way back from the 80's with Rapid Eye Movement, and later with Schizoid Band and again with Crimson in 2015, and have tickets for the Albert hall gig in June. Brilliant to hear so many stories from these eras, thanks for this !

I'm so psyched that I'm seeing Crimson for the first time this year!
Seriously talented, modest, super bloke. Saw a recent KC gig, absolutely jaw dropping.
You need to get Adrian Belewwwwwwwwwww!
I cant wait to see Crimson at popular rock festivals, man that will be cool.
If you grew up listening to "In the Court of King Crimson" album you WANT this guitar ! Great interview Lee !
That guitar is so damn cool

I did and I don't. I've sold all the PRS guitars I've owned. But even on my preferred guitars, no thanks.
