The Captain talks to Bernie about his famous 1959 Les Paul 'The Beast', an awesome 1960 Les Paul (SG) and his more recent association and equally awesome signature models with PRS Guitars. There's even a potential exclusive as we stumble on a possible USA PRS signature guitar for Bern.

13:38 - Bernie demos The Beast through a Victory V40
19:00 - What colour was The Beast before it faded? The Captain finds out. But can he put The Beast back together?
20:45 - Bernie's 1960 Les Paul (SG)
29:15 - Bernie discusses his history with PRS Guitars
37:00 - Bernie plays his signature PRS SE
40:00 - A USA Bernie model? Maybe...
42:51 - Bernie plays a PRS Private Stock McCarty Singlecut
Enjoy this video, and join us in thanking the ever genial Bernie Marsden for inviting Andertons into his home. (And to Mrs M for the tea and cake).

Cheers

Rest in peace, Bernie. Such a gentleman and a fine guitarist. You will be missed.
watching this again after the sad news about Bernie today...rip bernie
That's the most Les Paul sounding Les Paul I've ever heard. Ever. Even for a '59. Amazing guitar.
it sounds great, I agree.
If you want to hear another absolutely amazing '59, check out this video from Gregor Hilden: /watch?v=o9Ujm4HEXGc
the sound from this one is out of this world imho. He is a fantastic guitarists who played with Marsden and the likes before as well.
Amazing guitarist :-)
I sold a 59' to Greg Allman in 1984. It was a great sounding 59' but I needed the money. Not sure of who took control of his estate, but it might be worth looking into to see if it is still in the estate.
@@donrutter6765 l bet if it sounded as amazing as Bernie's 59 Les Paul there wouldn't be a day that goes by you wouldn't be giving yourself an uppercut..unfortunately sometimes we just don't have options , hey buddy
I've a tokai ls100 that sounds just like that
Who’s back here after hearing of his passing? 😞
I am. Regularly. And I've put my Bernie Marsden SE with Amber Pups (and some other upgrades) into the "Never Ever to Sell" guitar collection ... RIP Bernie. Great guy.
The SE with the 57/08 sounds fabulous .. it’s a great guitar .. RIP Bernie
RIP Bernie, such a sweet sweet guy.
seems like the nicest guy in the world
Amen... Like he said.. He isn't a likely rock star. He is the rock star next door.. :-) Wouldn't it be better if all great musicians were as laid back and friendly?
My thoughts as well. So down to earth!!
Have you ever seen someone grumpy on a jetski?
Now multiply that by 1000x owning the worlds best sounding LP.
He's like a guy you would walk by in a store and think nothing of it...unless you found out that was Bernie Marsden. LOL
The fact that he goes through like 25 different tones without a pedal is pure art!!
yeah...all of the diff tones sound vry brilliant..
Lenny Henry exactly. He is a good guitarist but not special. Anyone that plays a les Paul is capable of the same. Maybe not to that tonal extent but close
If for you turning the pots is pure art so, yes it is !
A real player
Awful news today, RIP Bernie, a true legend. And thank you so much Lee for giving us this interview.
I want someone that looks at me the same way the Captain looks at that Les Paul.
why are you an attention seeker haha
Walk through Harlem at 1 A.M. and you'll get all kinds of looks.
are you 21, blonde, female and a virgin? if so..... I'll look at you that way XX
Had to come back and watch this again upon hearing of Bernies passing. RIP
RIP Bernie, thanks for everything, hope the Beast will show up and played again in the worthy hands.
Possibly Bonamassa once more. He buys everything, which is called "Burst". I thing he already used "The Beast" for several shows in the past...
R.I.P. Bernie Marsden
@@stephanchedor7627 Well, Joe used this guitar several times indeed but the Beast went for sale at ATB for 1M quid few months ago. Then the guitar went offline few days later. Maybe it was already sold, maybe Bernie decided to keep it. However I don't think this is the price it would go to Joe if he will end up having it.
what an absolute gem of a person. as humble and down to earth as an artist can be.
That neck pickup is blowing my MIND! It can practically everything! It's got so much warmth and fullness when the tone's all the way up but there's no nazaly quality at all. It almost comes across as a midboosted bridge pickup!
This coming from a EVH minded player who essentially thinks you should be on the bridge all the time; I hate using neck position humbuckers, even when they sound "good", it's just not a style I like.
It's so insane how magical things were back then, when men were gods and legends, making some of the most iconic, memorable, immortal music this planet has ever seen, and to top it all off they all knew each other so casually and intimately. Clapton just passing this guitar along, stories about Jim Marshall... and ALL the guys from back then have stories like that when you listen to them like "oh yeah, me and JIMI HENDRIX were jamming one night...".
Seriously, what the hell happened? Where did it all go??
what a Gentle soul! RIP Bernie!
What a beautiful soul, and incredible guitarist. RIP Bernie.
Thank you so much for going to Bernie's house by yourself. One mention of Chapman guitars (of which there would've been many) if Rob had been there, or one pinch harmonic, would've just taken the magic out of the room. A truly thoroughly enjoyable interview. You are honestly a great interviewer Lee.
While I can appreciate that Chappers owns a guitar company and needs to shift units, I feel that the gear demos done by him turn more into product placement for his gear. Lee's demoing is better because while he uses the same licks over and over its a better comparison of tone between guitars and amps. While Chappers turns the gain right up and everything sounds the same while at the same time has to be held at gunpoint to play a clean sound
Brad Carroll Bernie actually does a pinch harmonic. More than one, in fact.
John Jones
Irrelevant. OP disparaged Rob's use of pinch harmonics when Bernie does them himself, which is funny.
If you can define "soul" better than "I like it and so should you" I might actually give you money. Does distortion automatically negate this "soul"? Are you confusing distortion with an overdriven valve amp, which is often what Rob plays in the Andertons vids when not specifically demoing distortion pedals?
***** Hm, I thought Chappers owned it and Lee handled the distribution via his contacts and took a bit off the top.
John Jones Oh come off it.
What a truly likable bloke!
So sad that I'm just learning about Bernie and his music. My goodness, what an absolute gem of an interview and a gentlemen. For all the "bad" you hear about rock stars, Bernie seems like he was one of the good ones. RIP Bernie.
Lee and Mrs Marsden, we will be forever grateful for this video. Bernie, thanks to video, will be with us forever. Thank you
God bless you Bernie RIP, I saw you play once in Germany and loved the show. Especially your rhythm playing. I also was moved by your generosity during the PAL and Endangered Species videos. Hats of to Marsden 😅
I got to meet Bernie at a PRS Experience and he simply could not have been a nicer guy. It's nice to meet famous, talented people who are not stuck on themselves. Cheers to Mr. Marsden!
Just came back to watch this again. What a great guy Bernie was. Missed by a lot of people. 🙏
Omigolly! Bernie Marsden, from my favorite era of Whitesnake!
RIP Bernie.
:')
That moment when I saw the red under the plastic ring there. Oh. My. God. :O
Groovy Juvie I believe the term sun burst came from the discoloration caused by the sun hitting the guitars in the display windows. Now guitar companies like to replicate the look of what was technically poor paint quality.
orlock20 They were originally called bursts and only available in what we now know as heritage cherry, but because the 58 and 59 bursts contained a certain pigment (anadine I believe) they faded under UV light. Some ended up like the Beast, others went dark (tobacco) and others went more orange (honey/caramel burst). In 1960 they changed the paint and all bursts since then have been derived from the colours the original 58s and 59s went as they got exposed to UV.
***** No cherry burst turned dark. Tobacco burst were made as well. I don't think they were actually called "tobacco", but they were made alongside the cherry sunburst. They are quite a bit rarer, though. Duane Allman had one of each. Look up "Hot lanta Les Paul", or Joe Perry's 59.
Groovy Juvie I wonder how many of the lucky owners of a Collectors Choice "Beast" promptly went and unscrewed their switches to see if it was red under there too? And what the answer was? :)
Jonathan Oakey Oh that's a good shout! Any Gibson CC owners here? Haha :D
RIP dear Bernie, we lose a great British Blues/Rock Legend, a great soul ! We love you Bernie...Music never die !
RIP Bernie. What a treasure to have this interview for a snippet of Bernie's charm and insight!
Bernie is a complete legend!! I had the privilege to watch him play live with the late great cozy Powell many years ago and still cherish the memory :)
R.I.P. Bernie!
Came back to watch this again.
RIP Mr Marsden
What a treat! I've only recently discovered Bernie Marsden, but did not realize what a prolific guitarists he is. This is the most enjoyable interview I've watched in a long time. What a sweet down to Earth guy Bernie is. I want to get one of his guitars and meet him someday and get him to sign it!
Man i could watch this all week! Thank you so much Bernie!
That's your best video by far Lee. Lots of fascinating stuff from Bernie - he comes across so well.
what a gentleman bernie is ,really enjoyed watching that ,great playing too
I just found out he has passed. Damn. What a kick in the head. Same thing that got Jeff Beck I believe. Meningitis. 72 years old. RIP Bernie. You left your mark on the world.
Thank you Lee, for the wonderful interview!! That was awesome.
Right around the 14 minute mark, when Bernie is playing The Beast, I literally got chills from the tone of that guitar. Holy hell that thing is amazing.
Bernie Marsden is just everything you want your guitar hero to be. You feel like you've known him for 30 years after just 5 minutes of meeting him. Lovely humble man. And a helluva guitar player
What a wonderful interview. What a great guitar player and a great and humble man. So sadly missed. R.I.P.😪😪
That American Marsden PRS is the new love of my life...I need one somehow...
Great player, great guitar (the beast) and wow what a deal to make an affordable good artist guitar. Hats off to you Bernie, and thanking Andertons for this vid!
Awesome! Thanks for doing this. It was a great watch. Hope you do more of these.
What a Fantastic Video I can`t believe that Bernie Marsden got to meet the legend that is The Captain!
Please have Bernie demo all your guitars. Thank you. - The World.
His PRS SE in trampas green is one of the most beautiful guitars I've seen.
One of the best interviews I have seen! Bernie you are the man!
incredible feel and touch. Bernie is in a class of his own. awesome interview.
Being a gutarist for 40 yrs ( at least a guitarist enthusiast) I've heard his name just a very few times. What a very pleasant person to interview and now to do a little more research!
Brilliant video. More of this sort of thing please Captain!!!!!!
You should make this a proper series...
Who knows... you might make it to John Mayers house haha
John and Lee is something I would pay to see
How about Mike Landau's house, or Andy Timmon's house, or....
R.I.P. Bernie Marsden 24th August 2023. May your music live on forever.
Bernie is such a lad! His signature is a beast of a guitar! So many props for him for keeping it cheap!
This was lovely, Cap! You really gotta do more of this!
Great Job Guys excellent video...
Lee, you my friend did all us guitarists a great pleasure with this sit down with Bernie. He is an outstanding talent and I believe I shed a tear when he played the 59. Thank You Sir and God Bless!🎸
This is amazing. Thank you so much to everyone involved.
That PRS has so much more character than most, and I think it's in the '57 pickups... but I'll still take the Beast!
Quite simply, one of the best music videos I have seen on UA-cam. I could not stop watching. Makes me want to go out & buy a "Bernie" from PRS for myself.
Ya, me too; been searching the bay and reverb.com ever since! Likely have to move a cupla dust collectors first or the Mrs will be at me with the bat
Compulsor brilliant the beast is the best led Paul I have heard
I did just that. $500 for a fat neck PRS. Never was remotely interested in a PRS before. I wish it had the McCarty headstock (or anything else really)....
The more I see this guy, the more I like him. He has a great touch on the fretboard and a good voice. I got his Blues for Greenie CD some time ago and loved it. Now, I find him popping up in a lot of my youtube searches.
Thoroughly enjoyed watching this video. Love hearing all the 'old' stories from professional musicians.
That was a great video Lee. Bernie seems like he's a really good guy.
Lee, This is really your best work. Great Job.
Bernie its smooth as butter.. thank you for the story ...
That was one of the best interviews! What an absolute top bloke, down to earth and a brilliant guitar player.
Great interview by Lee, relaxed and knowledgeable as ever. Thanks to the both of you for putting this interview out there. I'm sure many people have just gained an extra element of respect for great guitarists and guitars alike.
The best captain meets ever
Hi Lee, when did you do this video? I was in England last week and did a recording with Bernie. I was blessed enough to get to play the Beast. What a guitar. Bernie is a true gentlemen to say the least. Bernie and his wife are great people . My wife and I have memories for a lifetime.
Absolutely fascinating. Please let's have more of these type of in depth interviews.
Pure dreamy gold, you are one lucky lucky man Mr Anderton!
Not sure how these little interviews come to happen, but a video with Joe Walsh or David Gilmour would be fascinating.
Tom S - or even Captain meets Clapton ... or Captain meets Robert Cray ... or Captain meets Paul McCartney ha ha ha
Love Joe Walsh. Dudes a great player and a real character.
RIP 🙏
Just love this video. Seeing the barely contained excitement underneath the captains demeanour.mhes in seventh heaven! Brilliant!
Excellent!! Thank you for doing this. It's so great to see incredible guitarists such as Bernie on their own turf. Please do more of these sorts of videos.
Great video? Any idea where I can find the blues funk backing track we can hear at the very beginning? They already used it in the PRS 22 vs 24 custom video a while ago
0meg4f3n1x It tells you at the end.... you can only buy them from Bernie Marsden clinics.
Andertons Music Co Well in that case Bernie needs to do a clinic in Halifax, Nova Scotia! Seriously though.. ..some of the best content from the Andertons site I've seen. First rate!
0meg4f3n1x the chord changes on it sound similar to "oye como va" by santana - there is a backing track of this on YT
he plays Strictly Latino at the beginning...but I don't know about backing tracks
Victory amps everywhere
Awesome genuinely warm interview. Great job Captain & Bernie.
Love The Beast, Bernie's playing & the conversation flow so much I keep coming back to watch this clip again. Much appreciation for putting it out for us Captain Lee & The A-Team!
Bernie is the beast not the les Paul
NO PRS can match the SNARL of a real Les Paul, aka "the beast"- makes the PRS sound like a toy!!!
Bernie even PLAYS BETTER on the Les Paul than on the PRS!!! :)
Wow...... Proper guitar player and proper guitar purveyor together for best part of an hour, thanks Lee and Bernie.
Is there anyone in this world who is nicer and more humble than Mr. Marsden? What a cool chat to listen to!
What a fascinating interview, so good. Glad Chappers had nothing to do with this quality interview as he is a complete annoying chump.
Agree..
I cannot unsee the ball bulge.
TOP NOTCH ! Congratulations Mr. Captain. !!!! I am glad to see and hear a maestro like Bernie Marsden,
Thank you for such a wonderful video - just two gentlemen chatting about their passion. A pair of exemplars !
The 57 who disliked, are just jealous
Irish Potato looks like Lenny's mind is a but narrow, huh? :-)
Why aren't you funny?
Uh-oh...better head to the medicine cabinet. I just got GAS!
Awesome video! Very laid back, so much history and so many fantastic guitars! And so nice playing and such great sounds! Proves that the sound is in the fingers - at least when it comes to great guitar players. Good work facilitating, Lee, and Bernie is just such a nice guy. Thank you!
What a fantastic interview. A treat from beginning to end. I saw Bernie live back in the early Whitesnake days at the Lyceum in The Strand and he was phenominal, I'm delighted to say that nothing has changed, and what a lovely bloke too. A serious thank you for this one chaps!
A left handed prs Bernie would be good but I'm not holding my breath
he is a fatter version o Fast Eddie from Motorhead now I swear
More like Eddie is a Cockney cowboy biker version of Bernie.
Amazing discussion/interview!!!
Thank you so much for doing this.
5 years ago, wow. I remember when this came out, time flies
Lol, Captain, you're the man but you use too many Masonic signs, the true mark of the neophyte.
m. saint like what?
wikichris You know I can't say that online bro. I'm just saying it's made too obvious. Peace out! SMIB
Lenny Henry All humans were originally reptilian and evolved to our present state. If you're in doubt, just take a good look at your skin. If you look closely you'll notice little "eye" shaped patterns on it. There's a reason for that particular formation, and the reason is; THOSE EYE SHAPED PATTERNS WERE SCALES SEVERAL MILLION YEARS AGO. I studied forensic anthropology as a student in college years ago and learned this. Also, our DNA is much more reptilian than the DNA we share with other anthropoids. But thanks anyway for the reply.
m. saint Isn't the tinfoil hat on your head a little uncomfortable?
I have two PhDs and a Masters Degree. I'm a 77 year old retired theoretical physicist. All my children are scientists and Medical Doctors. So the only tinfoil in this conversation is the tinfoil and wood your little bird brain is made of. Try reading a book on the subject before trying to insult someone's' intelligence.@@pentat0nic36 🙂
Bonamassa is so overrated. Atleast Bernie can write great songs
I truly loved this. Great conversation and a drool inducing '59! What could be better? Bernie is going to be hard to beat. What a lovely guy not to mention a sweet blues player. Thanks for sharing this with us, Lee.
This was a lot of fun to watch, I've always liked Lee, and Bernie seems like a heck of a nice guy.
Wonderful interview with one of the true greats of British rock & blues. Moody/Marsden in Whitesnake were an amazing pairing and I have listened to "live in the heart of the city" regularly since I first heard it. Thanks for making it and please do more!
This was great, watched the entire video from start to finish. Very gracious guy, Bernie is.
Great posting. Bernie Marsden a true guitar hero and very down to earth. Had the privilege years ago in 1981 to meet him and the rest of Whitesnake here in Glasgow. Brilliant to listen to him talking about the history of his guitars. Thanks for posting!
What a fabulous video Lee - it was a perfect video with Bernie, and thanks so much for sharing this - it was like we were there in his home watching this private conversation with the two of you. He seems like such a nice, polite , engaging gentleman - still hard to imagine him today as being in Whitesnake, as he seems just so sweet and gentle. As many others have said, this is probably the best video and interview that you have ever done .
Thanks so much to Lee, Bernie and his wife for letting us into this special interview - what a legend.
