Moments like this really make you appreciate the internet. The fact that this car ended up in Chris Harris's hands to do a drive/history lesson video for millions to see is simply amazing. This new Top Gear gets so much wrong but moments like these with Chris do so much to make up for it, thanks to everyone involved in putting this together it really does feel special.

@jon doe I don't think it was ever suppose to be a review, it would be completely irrelevant. To me it came off more as, perhaps, the best car reviewer documenting his love for a car manufacture and meeting the original start of that with some historic info thrown in. As a car fanatic myself I found this was beautifully done, the stars aligning if you will.

@jon doe ahh now I see, it wasn't because it was a bad review or anything you said before you just don't like Chris Harris. Nothing wrong with having different taste to the majority of others, if that is all it really is. I find myself in the minority when it comes to allot of preferences to but I'm on board with Chris and I dislike the other newer top gear presenters. The only thing I don't understand is why you are watching his videos if you dislike him so much, no offense is intended by any of this I just genuinely don't understand. If a video catches my attention but then I notice it's by someone or a channel I can't stand I just won't even click on it let alone watch the whole thing and then go down and comment on other people's positive opinions. It just doesn't give me any satisfaction, that would be what people refer to as trolling. Again no offense is intended I'm just observing and explaining my view.

Andy Nixon / No it hasn’t. All these car nerds that just want to see cars and want pointless facts about each one is so boring. Top gear lost 68% of its fan base after the old guys left (Jeramy and the gang). That’s because people preferred that, and nothing you can say can prove me wrong. The old one was better because it was funny and entertaining. And if you don’t agree then ask the almost 70% of previous viewers of this show. Top gear will never get as many viewers as it ever got before.

    • @fyshfysh
      @fyshfysh 5 років тому +21

@@user-uq1fq6gs3ii really can't believe you could watch that video and say it was just a list of boring facts!
it's a bit hard to follow your point but i think you're saying people wanted the entertaining stuff of the 2001-2015(ish) tg. agreed, if so, and so did i. i loved clarkson, may and hammond's camaraderie, but getting Chris Harris to try and recreate that and to be funny (to the extent of making him be the butt of short guy gags to reid and le blanc!) is not using his strengths. he's getting better but his strength is being genuinely passionate about something he loves.... something that is overflowing from clarkson, may and hammond. but Harris has a style of his own and that's refreshing. he's not afraid to get nerdy about cars and that's great because with him its all so genuine you get swept along for the ride.
and come on, the celeb lap? when have any of them been good in new new tg?

In the 70s and 80s there were tons of kit cars you could buy to go on VW Beetle chassis. Maybe at that time, they didn’t bother making one of these particular replicas because you could just buy a cheap VW Karmann Gaia, which looked a lot like this Porsche design. And nowadays there just are not enough Beetle chassis around anymore to make kit cars as popular as they once were.

This car has spent many decades in the garage of its purchaser and former owner Otto Mathé, an Austrian race driver who actually dominated many races with this car. It was also called VW Typ 60 K 10 or "Berlin-Rome car" because that was the way it was supposed to take when it was produced. But everybody knows what happened in 1939. Mathé kept it in his garage in Innsbruck until his death in 1995 when the car was "re-discovered". It has since been owned by car collectors or enterprise groups. In fact, at this moment it is on sale.
And to the (decision) makers of Top Gear:
Chris Harris is a true car enthusiast. Watching his "old" videos is mesmerising - his knowledge, skills and passion are beyond anything of this insubstantial comedy crew that now wants to call itself Top Gear. I was almost about to excuse the terrible mishap of Season 23 because of what had followed (and wonderfully) developed into a contrasty trio where each had his qualities. It hurts to see Harris being marketed as the clown - particularly with those two school bullies in tow, who just destroy even the slightest seed of magic. (I literally can not understand certain bits of what they're saying - also their voices are terrible to listen to)
What we see here is Chris Harris in pure form: a well studied and truly honest car lover. His clip about the 2CV even had my eyes go wet - it was an emotional poem to a car, and LeBlanc didn't sabotage it - he actually helped Harris prove his point (in a cynical manner). To me that's kind of the spirit of Top Gear -

People talk so much about the Ferrari 250 GTO and Bugatti Type 57 being the most beautiful cars in the world and while they are, I think *this* takes the cake for one of the most breathtaking designs of any car ever made. It’s just a timeless profile and shape that was just decades ahead of its time. The pronounced shoulders, the wide hips, the sloping roofline, etc. It’s all still used today in Porsche’s cars. No other car brand has stayed true to their design language, aside from Koenigsegg and Pagani. You don’t see Bugatti or even Ferrari maintaining their styling. They’re always all over the place. *This* is what tradition really is. And the fact it hasn’t been restored just makes it even more admirable.

The genesis of Porsche, absolutely breathtaking. You can almost feel the people and factory workers handcrafting this car while you stand near it. The patina, the door locks, the gauges, the rubber insulation around the windows, the headliner, the rusted rings around the headlights, it's real. When they showed the old footage with Porsche in it, there's really something eerie about it, the beginning of something truly wonderful.

This is why old cars, and especially old historical cars like this one are so special.

Some folks just don’t appreciate the development arc of engineering. Everything today is an evolution of yesterday’s designs: this holds true in nature too. While the performance of the Type 64 may be underwhelming, the basic design parameters laid down evolved into the most successful sports car company in the world. This car was faster than some airplanes in 1939. Porsche had designed mid engined V12 and V16 Grand Prix cars for Auto Union in the years prior making as much as 550 hp. The range and depth of Porsche designs over the years is breathtaking. They demonstrate a brilliant engineer willing to tackle most any assignment with vision, clarity, and perseverance.

The first Porsche, 81 years old, est. value $20 Mil. I can't believe the owner let you take this out on a misty day. Jay won't let any of his cars see a drop of water, ever. I would say this certainly deserves the same treatment. Great vid!

    88 mph top speed, constructed in 1939... that’s not a coincidence 😁

@@brucew.5292 I supposed it's about the speed required to travel back to 1955 in back to the future.

Francis Chabot oh. I suggest buying a pair of pants/a pair of loafers and go talk to a woman. Some of these people spend too much time alone

You can definiatly feel the love for a piece of automotive history in this clip.
Top Gear took a different route, but the new route after some nasty bumps 🚧 is becoming better and better!
    Keep up the Good work
