LMAO YESSS
It’s so refreshing to hear a guy say “No uterus, no opinion”
@Chuck B ... no women are getting abortions against their wishes. At least not on a large scale.
@Chuck B Chuck? Sounds like you don’t have a uterus there buddy, so you know how the saying goes... I’ll remind you - no uterus, no opinion.
@Chuck B chill sheesh it’s a joke
Ffs when someone points something out that they thought was funny and then someone in the reply takes it the wrong way and suddenly before u know it the whole replies section has turned into some massive sebate
@Chuck B I think it’s pretty clear based on the context of the question I was answering that I was talking about abortion being legalised etc - I think obviously fathers won’t have no say at all but at the end of the day if it’s the woman’s body then it’s her decision. A quick 10 second answer obviously can’t cover different nuances or extreme scenarios like ‘if women are forced against their will’ (though I’m not sure how common this is), but I am definitely pro choice. I just don’t feel that men should play major roles in creating laws and policy-making surrounding abortion.
I love how he’s out here pushing boundaries and spilling so much tea, whilst just panicking about his cake...the most Jack thing I’ve ever seen
I am a deaf person, and the deaf community is extremely cliquey and don’t like intrusions. I don’t care who teaches sign language as long as you are respectful and know what you are teaching.
What? That's horrible. People learn a whole damn language they dont need just to communicate to them, and they dont like intrusions? Oh wow lol.
@@LL-wu5ui Sorry for a VERY late reply to this, but I had to comment on this matter.
(My opinion is the same as OP as a deaf person myself, so please keep that in mind)
If you look into the Deaf community history and the whole evolution of Deaf culture specifically (also, yes, deafness has its own culture, which often sets it apart from the rest of the disabled community), some are extremely protective of the idea that we don't need to be in the hearing world to engage with life.
This was instigated by the segregation of the Deaf community by many in society for many years. Many people don't know this, but laws regarding sending Deaf people to asylums in many countries were only repealed in the late '90s and early-ish 2000s. For example, in America, this law allowed individuals to send Deaf people to asylums (because they were deaf) was only repealed in 2003.
Okay, that's America, but what about the UK. Well, for example, BSL was only recognised as a language by the UK government in 2003 (2003 is a huge year for Deaf rights globally, it seems from what I can find); however, to this day, it has not been given legal protection as most spoken recognised languages (although this is covered-ish with disability laws).
Essentially, what it all boils down to is an "Us vs Them" mentality. This is very ingrained with individuals who have spent their entire lives being Deaf and have had to adjust how they go about their entire day with their hearing level. But as a result, Deaf culture is surprisingly vibrant. Sign language is arguably some of the most emotive languages of all, and there are so many different quirks to sign language that is so integrated into the community, that I highly recommend learning it.
This mentality is why you might hear how people getting cochlear implants are referred to as "traitors" by some of the Deaf community, as those people might view it as saying that being Deaf is a direct hindrance to experiencing life. It's also why you might hear about people getting very defensive over sign language being taught by hearing folk.
I personally love the idea of @Jack Edwards using sign language as I personally believe it should be taught in mainstream schools as a secondary language to everyone. Not only is it a good way to bridge that segregation to the Deaf community and make things far more accessible, but it's such an interesting language and, in a lot of cases, is faster than speaking.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~Just blabbing about the intricacies of sign language in this bit. Not essential to the rest of the comment~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Talking about the quirks of sign language earlier, I just want to point out some things you might not know if you are a non-sign user.
Firstly, Sign Names.
Sign Names are arguably the most "sacred" part of signing with a Deaf person SPECIFICALLY. This is because you are never (as decided by Deaf culture) allowed to gift yourself with your own Sign Name.
Your sign name is decided by a Sign User (usually) by one who only communicates via sign language (though a fluent deaf signer may be equally valid depending on who you ask). A sign name comprises of the first letter of your first name and a trait that is both easily and personally identifiable. [A good film that displays this but in an old-fashioned way (in regards to gender and shit) is the Disney film "Amy".]
Another cool quirk is that anyone can create a word (or, in this case - a sign) for something and for it to be recognised, and that sign is continuously optimised for speed. This essence of this can be dumbed down to two sentences:
- Words are long.
- Phrases are longer.
We can create signs that encompass multiple words, or if there is a word that isn't in common circulation in sign language, we can simply create an action for that and we can use that to describe the thing (essentially an acronym but cooler as it is often more permanent if many people use it).
If you look at that this deaf Overwatch fan, for example, (compete.kotaku.com/deaf-overwatch-league-fan-comes-up-with-custom-signs-fo-1826582964 - basically a dead game, I know, but that's the easiest available example I can provide); when words don't exist for a certain thing or the words are simply too long to keep up the pace, or a specific phrase has a specific meaning, we can just make a word up to fill in the gap and/or replace it.
Moreover, you can often guess what signs are being said because many signs are based on objects' shape, the objects' actions, or a straightforward description of an object. For example, everyone instinctively knows the sign for a book. I don't even need to see your signing to know that you probably have put your hands together and opened them both up like a book to symbolise a book.
Edits: They are literally because I cannot type it seems so I leave out words or I forget entire sections of sentences or paragraphs because why the fuck not?
@@nijapyrosphere4145 Thank you for putting so much work into explaining all of this!!
I just find it so sad because he seemed to be really excited to learn sign language and you can tell he was really upset about all that backlash. I'm not a part of the community but how is it offensive that he was sharing his progress online? Isn't it like any other language? The more people are learning it, the better, no?
Yeah that was a bit of a wtf moment for me, I was like “surely the more people talk about sign language and spread awareness of it the better, right?" It’s something I’ve looked into learning recently, especially with COVID-19 and masks making things worse for deaf/hard of hearing/people who lip read, but hearing those comments and seeing this discussion here about an "us vs them" mentality is hugely discouraging.
Jack is the perfect mix of wholesome, funny and fascinating
HUHHHH as a hard of hearing person, i don’t think it’s offensive at all? in fact it makes me really happy that you as a hearing person cares enough to learn sign and share it to your other hearing viewers which may even inspire them to learn too :’)
Yeah, same! It confuses me that people would be hostile about teaching others to communicate with them.
That gatekeeping attitude in general is just very off-putting and discouraging. It definitely discouraged me to learn or enjoy certain activities. I'm too anxious thinking about stumbling across those type of people when I go to social interest gatherings.
I think it’s just that there’s no proper resources for sign languages (like dictionaries for spoked languages) so you have to learn from people. So if a hearing person is teaching something wrong, people will learn it wrong. And for any language really, you’re best learning from a native speaker (or someone who is immersed with native speakers like if you have deaf family members)
Your answers are so unique and you are sooo kind. I am so glad to have discovered your videos a month ago. You are brilliant and inspiering. Thank you so much.
17:00 I completely relate. I had a teacher tell me I was ruining my friends lives and that if I wanted to ruin mine that was fine but to leave my friends alone.
It didnt scar me or affect my mentality but I was really shocked that a teacher could say that to a student.
Now, as a teacher myself, I can understand that sometimes students can be challenging but it is my JOB to guide and support them not to degrade them whilst they are still developing.
I'm glad you werent affected by what your teacher said to you because you have certainly blossomed into a fine young man and your year 8 teacher missed out on witnessing and nurturing that growth.
I have no idea why a grown person would say that to a child. I once had a teacher tell me "you're not as smart as you think". Which sucked, because being smart was the only thing I had going on for me at the time. I still think about it when I'm doubting myself.
@@lavacaqueri5454 thats absolutely horrible! The careless words of people who mould your life clearly leave deep scars. I hope you have healed. I don't know you personally but I am certain that you have more going for you than just your smarts. Jaffa cakes are a cake as when they go stale, they turn hard. When a biscuit goes stale, it goes soft, unlike a Jaffa cake.
Referred to as "cakes" for tax reasons.
@@kayleighbyrne5191 i thought they were biscuits for tax reasons, hence why there in the biscuit isle not cake, but yeah there cakes disguised
It's due to the moisture content. After a particular moisture threshold is passed, it becomes hard when stale and is a cake. Jaffa cakes are legally cakes, but just sold in the biscuit isle for tax benefits.
They were the subject of a court case... due to definition they are a cake. However it was argued they are purchased as a biscuit due to being located in the biscuit isle. Jaffa cake won and they are now ‘cake tax’ exempt. Love that I know this..and nothing about my own taxes.
i want a boyfriend like jack. so nice to know there are guys out there as awesome as him. :)
Hi Jack I just wanna caveat this by saying this isnt meant as hateful, I find u v inspiring, but i took slight issue with what you said around 14:05. I was born disabled and have spent my life in a wheelchair. As such people have been doing things for me since day 1, whether that's tying shoe laces, or helping with shirts. In year 13 I did my gold dofe where my teammates gave me a hard time for not pulling my weight. If I was given the power to decide what's offensive, I could get them lambasted and they would never say stuff like that again. However, I couldn't and knew they had a point so made an effort to become more independent with things like putting up the tent, cooking etc - and I found it gave me so much freedom! You ask any disabled person and they will say they wanted to be treated as an equal. Some of us will never be equals physically, but I realized I was using that as an excuse to never try. Peoples ability to criticize me about the standards I was holding myself to physically, while incredibly offensive at first, is one of the things I'm most grateful for now. I realised that even though I might never be able to achieve it I should always try to be as able bodied as possible to help with pride in myself. You have no idea how damaging the phrase 'let me do that' consistently over a lifetime is. It gives you the option to allow people to do everything which when your young you obviously take. It's only when you get older you realise your freedoms been inadvertently stripped away and you have to rely on others for the most basic tasks. For example, recently I taught myself to tie my own tie with my mouth, something that would have been stopped by people who saw me struggling and wanted to help, but the feeling of achievement and independence afterwards felt so good. It made me feel the same. My point is that without people going against my self beliefs and thus running the risk of offending me - I would never have realized how dependent I actually was. Trapped in others peoples kindness. As a side message instead of helping a disabled person with something, try to teach them how to do it themselves. You dont realise how valuable independence is until you've lost it.
Obviously what I've said above is not true of all situations and bullying should never be tolerated, but its important to note that even valuable criticism can offend. Valuable criticism that a minority might chose to ignore if they can decide what's offensive. Love u Jack thanks for making great vids. Pls upvote for him to see its v important
I totally get what you mean! Not the same story, but I’m blind and also really struggled with both independence and accepting that I need help sometimes. When I was a teen, I used to get offended about things that are now the biggest lessons I have ever learned and don’t regret for the world.
@@ayellowpapercrown6750 that's so awesome sorry I took a while to reply. I grew up in a really able focused family, so I've never been involved in the disabled community nor met a disabled kid like me my age, so its cool to have that connection. 😁
