Japanese literature is so deep yet so easy to read. One of my favourite author is Jukio Mishima. Oh, Haruki Murakami as well. And their short novels are great too. 😊
currently reading 1q84 by murakami! i’m loving it so far!
Video idea? - “Getting over my big book fear by reading the longest book on my tbr”. This is something I used to struggle with but I find it’s easier now by reading a shorter book alongside the long one for when I feel overwhelmed, which helps me not to fall into a reading slump. Also, I fold down the corner of every 30 or 50 pages so I can physically see the small chunk I’ll be reading that day. Looking forward to the week in the life video though!

this list of books feels heavily influenced by head girlboss uncarley and I am absolutely here for it
LOVED the Convenience Store Woman!!! Read it twice, and felt it really spoke to the woman's everyday experience.
If you love Japanese literature I would highly recommend The Guest Cat by Takashi Hiraide, I stopped reading for a number of years after my a levels, but this book helped me rediscover my love of reading, and as you said it takes normal mundane tasks and makes them just so inspiring and comforting to read
The toad in the hole doesn't *have* to be the best. Cooking is a skill, one that we get better at with practice. Nobody with very little experience at it can expect to be a gourmet chef. Just cook, enjoy what you make, and know that you will gradually get better at it. It's a process.
I actually read 'Convenience Store Woman' after you added it to your tbr list... cause it sounded like a weird fun book but it really did explore a ton of deeper themes... I like how the ending is left to imagination.. She's back in the store and she realises her part in the weird existence and she still has the alliance thing with the guy but it's a little wobbly... So I expect it to end in an imaginary future of the book..
One of the most ironic moments in the book was when the guy's sister-in-law calls the woman and says that her brother in law is greedy for money constantly and she's simultaneously threatening to sue him for said money...
The part where the main character's sister snaps at her and asks her why she cant be normal is a close second... It really elevates the tension in the plot and just puts into prespective how the society deems certain things 'normal' and anyone who doesnt fit in is automatically abnormal
Really enjoyed it... Probably gonna read more of japanese literature now
I almost want to do this but I don’t even know if I could read for half my screen time. But you make me want to try!
Early attendance squad 😂
Pausing the video for a moment to throw out the idea that maybe THE MOUSE texted the "NHS" text telling you to self isolate. They're diabolical like that.
I've been doing narrative studies and we are looking into realism right now and I'm fascinated!! It feels like I'm reading a documentary on human behaviour. I typically read fantasy and all that so it's definitely a new experience for me
That first book, the coffee shop one, is amazing. My grandmother gave it to me a few years ago and I always remember the feels I got from reading it 🥺
Accidentally breaking the handle off of his whisk might just be the most Jack Edwards thing I’ve ever seen him do 😂
(and I mean that in that best way possible)
That was an unexpected intro and I am not mad about it 😂
i love that he actually did 7 days, bc a lot of youtubers only do five when they say they’re gonna do a week of something
AHHHH BESTIESSSS THE KING IS BACKKKK BOW DOWNNNN😩💕👑💅
You should really read ‘The brothers lionheart’ by Astrid Lindgren! 🇸🇪
It’s a Swedish sorta childrens book with a very heavy theme about loss and the afterlife. A beautiful book that really leaves you stunned at the end of it!
I thought you could read it as one of your translated books!
Btw I love your content and it has inspired me to start getting back into reading which I love! 🥰
Such A Fun Age gave me the same experience of forgetting that I was reading words on a page and not watching a movie. Only the best books do that!
Oh I absolutely love your videos, they make me soo happy
I liked “Before The Coffe Gets Cold” a lot, but I think that there are a few contradictions in how the time travelling works in the book. I don’t know if it’s a matter of translation, cause I read the italian version, but at a certain point I started overthinking it, asking myself things like why the characters didn’t meet their past selves when they went back in time, or like why they could bring objects from the past even if the rules said they couldn’t change the present. Then when they start travelling to the future it gets even more confusing. Btw I loved the writing and the stories are engaging, heartwarming and delicate, so maybe it was the author’s choice to focus more on the introspection of the protagonists rather than on being coherent with the “”science”” behind the book. Just wanted to share my opinion, I love your videos and I’m definitely gonna get Conveniece Store Woman.
It actually makes sense 👁👁
My main issue was the fact that the first woman got so little time compared to the other three. It's probably just because her reason for going back was a lot more trivial and she was just meant to introduce the premise but it's so jarring how much time the other three get in comparison
"before the coffee gets cold" sounds really similar to this visual novel called "EDDA cafe" where basically this girl finds a mysterious cafe that gives her a special brew. this basically allows her to visit a time in her past, but she cannot change it and she has to return to the present or else her existence will get removed from the world. the time travel only lasts as long as the coffee gets poured into her cup. she visits someone, etc etc. anyways, it plays at your emotions so much, and i'm wondering if it was inspired by this book because it sounds very familiar. this was just a small rambling i'm sorry, but check out the visual novel if you'd like! the book is definitely going on my to-read.
People should be more like you, seriously!!! Even thought you don't understand the situation that the other is living, you research and try to think about it. Amazing !!
I absolutely loved Japanese literature and I'm glad to know you're enjoying it too. I wanna recommend you No Longer Human by Osamu Dazai and The Travelling Cat Chronicles by Hiro Arikawa. Those were my fave Japanese novel that wrecked me into pieces. :'( Anyway, will definitely check out Before the coffee gets cold soon!
Travelling cat chronicles DESTROYED me... do you have any similar recommendations as I'm trying to read more books by Japanese authors

My normal screen time is between 7hours and 12 hours. I have no idea how but when I would put only half of that into reading (and i already read much) than i would be readin a four hundred page book in two days... I should definitely consider starting that
I happened upon a murakami book of short stories one day two years ago at my school library and since then I’ve fallen totally in love with magical realism and Japanese literature. The genre makes me think in a way nothing else does.
Hey, you should read books that maeve Wiley reads in sex education. Her books are mostly feminist, women empowerment books and you see her reading them throughout the series

I loved when you put the book on your head, I do that too 😂
Hmm, I’ve only become a big reader recently and I read convenience store woman in untranslated Japanese version and my opinion of it was different. I wonder if it would be different if I read the translated work. I might try to read that one too. I was more engrossed in the protagonists mental state and her inability to think for herself and make sound judgements in difficult situations. There’s a lot to unpack in that book though I guess.
I agree with you

Honestly can Jack start putting his outfits in the description because I feel like I always end up asking where he gets stuff; today’s ask is the purple colour block Adidas jumper in the beginning?😹
Same.
OKAY let’s talk about “before the coffee gets cold” for a sec,,,, i LOVED the details of when for example Kohtake & Kei were crying because Fusagi was forgetting who Kohtake was and it was really sad and the woman in the dress (the ghost) who was reading a novel, closed her book, took her handkerchief and went to the bathroom TO CRY BECAUSE SHE WAS READING THE STORY THAT WAS HAPPENING. another example is when and the end of part 1: the lovers she (the woman in the dress) closes her book that is called “the lovers”. absolutely stunning
Honestly I play those ASMR ambiences on my phone while I read and study, read pdfs, then I listen to music, then podcasts while I draw ON MY TABLET... I don't think I ever NOT use my phone tbh
I’m in self-isolation too! I haven’t been out of my room for 4 days and it’s driving me insane. I can’t see my family, schoolwork is in overload and on top of that I don’t have the books I wanted to read, except for “Dune” but I just finished that one (highly recommend)
So now I just have to read the old books I still have in my room from when I was younger 😭
